Book Description

First published in 1957, this classic study has been reissued in a paperback version that includes an additional chapter bringing the material up to date. The author formulates the physical properties of crystals systematically in tensor notation, presenting tensor properties in terms of their common mathematical basis and the thermodynamic relations between them. The mathematical groundwork is laid in a discussion of tensors of the first and second ranks. Tensors of higher ranks and matrix methods are then introduced as natural developments of the theory.A similar pattern is followed in discussing thermodynamic and optical aspects. ... Read more

The book by Nye is considered by many people in the relevant scientific societies as the "bible" of crystal physics. In scientific terms, it is a rigorously written book on tensor algedra which which is the mathematical formalism essential to describe the physical properties of crystals. The mathematical complexity of the book is rather elementary and hence could be used for a senior level advanced undergraduate course as well (typically it is used as a first your graduate course text). The first half of the book discusses equilibrium properties of crystals (permittivity, piezoelectricity, elasticity etc.), therefore a rather modest background in physics is needed. The second half of the book that is devoted to transport properties may require some "general" background on the basic principles of transport phenomena and irreversible thermodynamics. This book, in my opinion, is a very well written book that places the physical properties of crystals in an "easy to comprehend" mathematical framework eloquently. It is an excellent text book. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Book Description

The Nature of Biological Systems as Revealed by Thermal Methods is a guide for experiments using thermal methods. The Editor has used his many years of experience to create a unique resource that will enable others with a less mathematical background, to realize the beauty and power of this tool and to gain a better understanding of biological problems. Biological calorimetry (and of course thermal analysis) is of increasing interest and is not covered thoroughly in other resources. The methods presented are macroscopic, for the rather inhomogeneous material (micromethods are often not possible or not pertinent). This book will help beginners in the field of thermal analysis or calorimetry understand the principles of thermodynamics being applied to biological systems. Biological systems are highly organized and very complex. The water and the different types of weak interactions among the macromolecules make the interpretation of thermal events very difficult. This book includes examples how to handle such problems. The Nature of Biological Systems as Revealed by Thermal Methods is unique in that it: -has a broad spectrum, from molecules and biochemistry, tissues, and food, to whole organisms; -combines practical problems (food processing, quality control, thermal denaturation of proteins, plants and small insects, etc.) with concrete solutions and interpretation; -provides practical strategies and tools without "dry physics and mathematics"; -initiates the application of thermal methods in new fields (e.g. medicine); -forces the reader to go into more detail of thermodynamics and thermal techniques; -simplifies communication between biologists, medical doctors and experts of thermal analysis. The book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in thermodynamics, including practising professionals applying thermal methods to biological problems; researchers and graduate students beginning work using thermal methods; and specialists of thermal analysis starting work on biological problems. In addition, this book will be a useful resource for libraries and institutes as the only book covering quantitative thermal analysis of biological systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference - but not for beginners!
This classic book has recently emerged from the land of the out-of-print books in a new edition, and I bought one as soon as I found out it was available. As an experienced homebrewer, I found it fascinating and informative. Noonan gets down to the hardcore chemical and technical foundations of brewing. And if you are interested in decoction mashing, Noonan provides what is probably the best description of the process that is available in print. This book is perfect for the professional brewer or advanced all-grain homebrewer.

However, the sheer volume of detail would bore a newcomer to brewing, or worse yet, scare him or her off. The beginner simply doesn't need this much highly-technical information. However, after that beginner gets a few batches under his belt, this book would be a good addition to his or her brewing library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must have for homebrewing!
This is without question the best book for homebrewing available. It is the only one that covers decoction mashing in detail. Most German brewers and even Anheuser-Busch use this efficient method to get maximum flavor and yield for your beer. Noonan covers a broad area of topics in great detail. From brewing chemistry to practical procedures outlined for the intermediate to advanced brewer, Noonan hits the bullseye. If you have brewed a little and really want to get into it, get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this is unavailable
This is the best brewing book of the dozen or so I own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This book is required reading for any serious brewer. After reading it, you will know how to choose your ingredients, the correct process for your ingredients and the proper equipment to make high quality beers. There is a lot of good advice for setting up your brewery (at home or otherwise) and the general guidelines for getting the most out of your brews. Even though I have been an all-grain brewer for some time, I find that I still go back to Noonan's book for practical information rather frequently. The only downside to this book is that the theoretical sections can be rather confusing. I am an engineer by education and I had a difficult time of understanding the enzyme reactions that occur in a mash or way hop resins combine with ions in the wort. A good deal of this in-depth theory made this book read like a college text, instead of like a book for the hobbyist.

Still, once you can distinguish the practical aspects from the theoretical information, this book is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for all-grain efforts, lager or ale.
Noonan's text is simply superb. It is well organized, extremely detailed, and concise. This is a book about how and why you use each part of the brewing process. Noonan champions and explains the decoction mash, and even explains how to figure out if the malt you're using needs a decoction or an infusion mash. Appendices address both the infusion mash and the step mash, concisely, yet in detail.

The first third of the book, dedicated to ingredients, is alone worth the price. The detail on malt, brewing water, and yeast instantly imparts a greater understanding of and appreciation for the brewing process.

Read this book and begin to make informed decisions about your ingredients and the processes you use to brew beer from them. ... Read more

Book Description

This hardcover edition is a summary of the basics of small system (or nonmacroscopic) thermodynamics, written by the originator of the field. It represents the most extensive addition to equilibrium thermodynamics since Gibbs. Originally published in two volumes it remains essential reading in a field whose practical aim is to derive equations that provide interconnections among various thermodynamic functions. Part I introduces the basics of small system thermodynamics, exploring environmental variables, noting throughout the ways in which small thermodynamic systems differ operationally from macroscopic systems. Part II explores binding on macromolecules and aggregation, completes the discussion of environmental variables and includes brief summaries of certain special topics. Among these are electric and magnetic fields; spherical drops and bubbles; and polydisperse systems. Terrell L. Hill, a leading American chemist, biophysicist and science writer and educator, is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Unabridged and corrected Dover republication in one volume of the two-volume edition published by W. A. Benjamin, Inc., New York, 1963, 1964. 32 illustrations. 2 Prefaces. Index. References.

4-0 out of 5 stars logical presentation of nanothermodynamics fundamentals
Some scientists, including the author, are beginning to use the phrase 'nanothermodynamics' to describe the behavior of small chemical systems at or near equilibrium. 'Thermodynamics of Small Systems' provides many concepts which can be used to describe these behaviors in practical terms for biological systems, between nearest-neighbor molecules or molecular clusters at surfaces and interfaces, in vapor-liquid-solid interfacial reaction and diffusion, in adsorbent-adsorbate interactions, or in membrane science and heterogeneous catalysis at short length scales. Concepts are clear and easy to apply if one has a strong background in chemical thermodyanmics and physical chemistry. A basic understanding of quantum chemistry is also useful.

When I read this book a few years ago, I merely sought to round out my knowledge of molecular level chemical systems by covering an area of thermodynamics I wasn't familiar with, but had no expectation of ever using those concepts. In fact, I've found that Dr. Hill's book has become a fundamental reference for my own work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How can topology be applied to chemistry?
This question is answered in a remarkable new book by Erica Flapan, knottheorist and professor of mathematics at Pomona College.Stereochemistry, the study of the three-dimensional structure of molecules, is a recurringtheme in chemistry and related fields.Topology, the study of geometricalproperties which are invariant under continuous transformations, is asimilarly popular area for mathematicians. While it is not immediatelyobvious that the two fields have anything in common, both fields owe a debtto the other.Although she initiates her book with a historicalperspective and detailed expository on basic aspects of low dimensionaltopology (e.g., stereoisomers, chirality, nonrigid symmetries, knot andlink types, three-dimensional manifolds, and link polynomials) she doesproceed into more advanced subject matter in later chapters includingMöbius ladders, symmetries of embedded graphs, and hierarchies ofautomorphisms.Of particular interest to the molecular biologist, thefinal chapter is devoted entirely to the topology of DNA and includestopological considerations of supercoiling, toroidal winding, enzymeaction, and tangle theory. The arguments are clearly presented within theframework of interesting and relevant molecular structures, yet there isenough mathematical rigor to satisfy dyed-in-the-wool mathematicians aswell.Although there will likely be something of interest to the averageworking chemist, the supramolecular scientist, organic chemist, molecularbiologist, and biophysicist, in particular, stand to gain the most by thecontents of this book. ... This rigorous and engaging book presents the basic theories underlying spectroscopy while incorporating modern viewpoints of practical utility in spectroscopy research. Written in a clear, jargon-free style, it covers the quantum mechanical theoretical basis of spectroscopy, modern innovations in spectroscopy theory, such as time-dependent theory, and practical applications of spectroscopy research, including the influence of condensed phases.Begins with a brief review of quantum mechanical principles, then moves on to such areas as the properties of light, bulk electric and magnetic properties of matter, fundamental theories of spectroscopic techniques, experimental arrangements, and finally applications of the electromagnetic spectrum. Studies the time-dependent theoretical approach to interpret frequency domain spectra, allowing readers to focus on the dynamic response of the system. Provides consistent and reasonable notation throughout, frequently uses thought experiments to help readers visualize a physical situation. and poses probing questions in order to stimulate independent thinking and prompt readers to consider potentially paradoxical predictions of theory. For spectroscopists, laser technicians, analytical and physical chemists, and physicists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, well-written textbook.
One of the few textbooks I have encountered which I consider well written from a both a scientific and a stylistic perspective. Jeanne McHale provides the clearest, most coherent presentation of the book's topic that I have seen. If the reader is encountering the material for the first time, I'd suggest using this book in conjunction with another, as there are details which are skimmed over here in the interest of presenting a cohesive development. But for a clear picture of the field, I don't know a better place to turn!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introductory text on the subject
This book is a good source for individuals trying to learn the concepts of molecular spectroscopy. It takes care to not jump over the student's head in the presentation of the material, but it does lack the in-depth treatment of subjects needed to really understand why spectra must be the way they are. For graduate level analytical course it would be great, but I think physical chemists might walk away without the understanding they need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid and consistent
This book is by far the best book, in my view, on the subject of chemical thermodynamics. The author covered both the classical and statistical aspects of the subject, and did it with such lucidity and consistency as rarely seen in books dealing with similar topics. Unlike many other text books which are primarily consisted of formulas and sample calculations, the author put in a lot of expositional materials that made each section very readable in itself and well connected with other sections. The author also didn't shy away from the necessary mathematics by providing the needed materials for all the derivations. The most outstanding feature of the book, however, would be the consistency and continuity in the materials covered, the explanations provided, the mathematics employed, and the simbols used. The only shortcoming of the book, however, seemed to be too digressional and wordy at times. But if you are prepared for these and ready to read a master upclose, you will be in for a pleasant surprize. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eminently readable introduction to point groups
Bishop's book is intended for students in the fields of physical chemistry and chemical physics, and limits its scope to subjects of interest to these people. Hard core physicists may want to turn to some other text for this reason, but the ease of presentation should still make the book attractive to them. It more or less only covers finite point groups, but the full rotation group is also discussed (superficially, not to scare away the mathematically disinclined). The book is eminently readable, and explains the uses of group theory within chemistry in a lucid and actually enjoyable way. The text is self-contained, and is suitable for private study. Vibrational spectroscopy, hybridization and symmetrization of wave functions in quantum chemistry are among the applications covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks hard as a rock, tastes smooth and easy going down!
Ever wonder how to simplify those hard to solve quatum mechanics chemistry problems, well I just don't have the anwer. I can, however, say that this fantastic book does a great job of explaining such a hard subject and,as an added bonus as the end, give you a fresh new hope of being able to solve such problems using group theory. First chemistry book I couldn't put down ... Read more
