1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
THIS BOOK IS A PIECE OF CRAP AND A WASTE OF TIME TO FIGURE OUT. I WOULD SUGGEST READING STUFF OFF THE INTERNET AND READING JOURNALS RATHER THAN WASTE TIME WITH THIS PIECE OF TOILET PAPER. I AM GONNA FLUNK THE CLASS CUZ OF THIS PEICE OF CRAP BOOK.

DONT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

AAAHHHHH!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
This is the worst textbook I have ever had!!!!!
It is difficult to read, full of errors, and has little or no introduction into any of the topics. In the class I'm taking, even the chemistry majors are having trouble. Don't bother buying this book. It's not worth the money!

- MS grad student in bioinformatics, Boston University

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful
If you have to take P. Chem for your degree and you're not a Chem major - pray you don't get this book. Atkins and Tinoco are far simpler and easier to read. It really seems like van Holde enjoys making his discussion as complicated as possible.

P. Chem is bad enough - this book only makes it worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Applications of Group Theory and P. Chem but little Organic
I enjoyed the application of group theory to biochemistry presented in this book. Some of the topics could use some more details. Also, I was hoping to read a few more details concerning equilibrium and organic chemistry. Nevertheless, this book is fun to figure out.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is Just As Rigorous Mathematically
This physical biochemistry text breaks down into three major sections: Macromolecular structure and dynamics. spectroscopy, and solution behavior of macromolecules. In very simple words, this treatise is not easy to read. It is definitely NOT for beginners in the field. In fact, the materials covered in this book require knowledge of chemistry major to comprehend.

Treatment n quantum mechanics and spectroscopy in this text go as deep as perturbation theory with all the rigorus mathematics. Readers might want to study ut Atkins' Physical Chemistry before flipping to sectins on statistical thermodynamics. Sections on X-ray, NMR, and absorption spectroscopy are written very clearly but smewhat too terse. Yet the terse treatment of these topics does nt necessarily make the concepts easier to understand.

Overall this text is worth all the information. Yet readers should be cautious abut whether ther are prepared for the level of mathematics and chemistry. ... Read more

Book Description

A practical introduction to orbital interaction theory and its applications in modern organic chemistry Orbital interaction theory is a conceptual construct that lies at the very heart of modern organic chemistry. Comprising a comprehensive set of principles for explaining chemical reactivity, orbital interaction theory originates in a rigorous theory of electronic structure that also provides the basis for the powerful computational models and techniques with which chemists seek to describe and exploit the structures and thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of molecules. Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry, Second Edition introduces students to the fascinating world of organic chemistry at the mechanistic level with a thoroughly self-contained, well-integrated exposition of orbital interaction theory and its applications in modern organic chemistry. Professor Rauk reviews the concepts of symmetry and orbital theory, and explains reactivity in common functional groups and reactive intermediates in terms of orbital interaction theory. Aided by numerous examples and worked problems, he guides readers through basic chemistry concepts, such as acid and base strength, nucleophilicity, electrophilicity, and thermal stability (in terms of orbital interactions), and describes various computational models for describing those interactions. Updated and expanded, this latest edition of Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry includes a completely new chapter on organometallics, increased coverage of density functional theory, many new application examples, and worked problems. The text is complemented by an interactive computer program that displays orbitals graphically and is available through a link to a Web site. Orbital Interaction Theory of Organic Chemistry, Second Edition is an excellent text for advanced-level undergraduate and graduate students in organic chemistry. It is also a valuable working resource for professional chemists seeking guidance on interpreting the quantitative data produced by modern computational chemists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Orbitals forever
Molecular orbitals are mathematical constructs rigorously derived from the application of quantum mechanical laws. Their pictorial depiction in term of spheres and lobes, however, has had a tremendous impact on chemistry, especially in the qualitiative interpretation of chemical phenomena. This book represents a testimonial of this fact, showing you applications ranging from pericyclic reactions to organometallics and photochemistry. Chapter 10 is of particular interest for those working on biomolecules since it shows how this powerful theoretical tool can be applied to rationalize the hydrogen bond interaction (of course the examples refer to simple systems and is up to your ability trying to exploit those concepts to disentangle the nature of a given protein-ligand interaction!).
Exercises for each chapter have been clustered in Appendix B, at the end of the book, while Appendix A contains a short derivation of the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory, post-HF methods and density functional theory. The latter appendix, however, could have been either entirely omitted from the book or integrated within chapters 1-15. All in all, this book is worth to be in your bookshelf and, if possibe, complement it with the classical work "Orbital Interactions in Chemistry" (a masterpiece written in 1985) by Albright, Burdett and Whangbo. ... Book Description

Sol-Gel Science presents the physical and chemical principles of the sol-gel process at a level suitable for graduate students and practitioners in the field. This book defines sol-gel rather broadly as the preparation of ceramic materials by preparation of a sol, gelation of the sol, and removal of the solvent. The sol may be produced from inorganic or organic precursors (e.g., nitrates or alkoxides) and may consist of dense oxide particles of polymeric clusters. Brinker expands the definition of ceramics to include organically modified materials, often called ORMOSILs or CERAMERs. The emphasis of the author' treatment is on the science, rather than the technology, of sol-gel processing. Although a chapter on applications is included, more detailed discussion is available in proceedings of conferences and in the recent collection of articles, Sol-Gel Technology for thin films, Fibers, Preforms, Electronics, and Specialty Shapes (Noyes, Park Ridge, N.J., 1988), edited by professor Lisa Klein. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Knowledge about Sol Gel Science
Perhaps it's trite to say this, but Brinker and Scherer's _Sol Gel Science_ is *the* indispensible desktop reference for the sol-gel chemist. Though now over a decade old, the topics covered (only a smattering of which are mentioned in the editorial review above) are so fundamental that it remains one of the most often cited sol-gel references, both in texts and refereed journal articles. The layout of the book takes the reader through the entire sol-gel formation process, from reaction to casting to drying, curing and other post-modificiations, with a chapter devoted to each step - permitting this book either to be read cover-to-cover (for the interested newcomer or as a text for a course in sol-gel science) or to be referenced as necessary by the more familiar reader.

C. Jeffrey Brinker, now affiliated with Sandia National Laboratories as well as the University of New Mexico, remains the preeminent researcher and one of the most-often cited authors in his field, continuing research on self-assembled nanostructures, porosity-tailored materials, organic-inorganic hybrids, and related topics.

George W. Scherer, professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of Princeton University, also maintains a professional involvement in sol-derived gels, glasses, and ceramics, among other areas of interest, and is the author of several patents, as well as innumerable scientific papers, in these fields.

Though more-recent texts may be more up-to-date in terms of research cited, especially areas pertinent to nanotechnology, this book's position as a compendium of knowledge in the field of sol-gel science has not diminished with age and is highly reccomended. ... Read more

Book Description

High Resolution NMR provides a broad treatment of the principles and theory of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as it is used in the chemical sciences. It is written at an "intermediate" level, with mathematics used to augment, rather than replace, clear verbal descriptions of the phenomena. The book is intended to allow a graduate student, advanced undergraduate, or researcher to understand NMR at a fundamental level, and to see illustrations of the applications of NMR to the determination of the structure ofsmall organic molecules and macromolecules, including proteins. Emphasis is on the study of NMR in liquids, but the treatment also includes high resolution NMR in the solid state and the principles of NMR imaging and localized spectroscopy.
Careful attention is given to developing and interrelating four approaches - steady state energy levels, the rotating vector picture, the density matrix, and the product operator formalism. The presentation is based on the assumption that the reader has an acquaintance with the general principles of quantum mechanics, but no extensive background in quantum theory or proficiency in mathematics is required. Likewise, no previous background in NMR is assumed, since the book begins with a description of the basic physics, together with a brief account of the historical development of the field.
This third edition of High Resolution NMR preserves the "conversational" approach of the previous editions that has been well accepted as a teaching tool. However, more than half the material is new, and the remainder has been revised extensively. Problems are included to reinforce concepts in the book.

Key Features
* Uses mathematics to augment, not replace, verbal explanations
* Written in a clear and conversational style
* Follows the successful format and approach of two previous editions
* Revised and updated extensively--about 70 percent of the text is new
* Includes problems and references to additional reading at the end of each chapter

Book Description

This volume records the proceedings of a Forum attended by manyleading researchers working in the field of Electron Density, DensityMatrix and Density Functional Theory held at the Coseners' House,Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, UK in early summer 2002. It has long been recognized that "All the necessary informationrequired for the energy and for calculating the properties ofmolecules is embodied in the first- and second-order densitymatrices". The wave function contains much more information than isrequired to yield the energy or other property. But the densitymatrices must correspond to some physically acceptable wave function.Coleman, one of the distinguished participants in the Forum, hasdubbed this "Coulson's challenge". His paper describing recent work onthe N-representability problem is included in this volume. McWeenydiscusses some unsolved problems in density matrix theory and densityfunctional theory; and Bader discusses the use of the electron densityin explaining the structure and properties of atoms and molecules.Density Functional Theory is widely used in studies of molecular andsolid state systems. Yet the theoretical apparatus for this approachremains under active development. Theophilou describes a newformulation of density functional theory. Gross and his coworkerspresent a time-dependent theory for molecules in strong laser pulses.Nagy considers pair density functional theory, while Ludena and hiscolleagues examine functional N-representability in density matrix anddensity functional theory. The meeting concluded with a Forum, ably chaired by B.T. Sutcliffe, inwhich the latest research and results were discussed. A record of thisForum is included in this volume. This book will be of value to researchers and research students intheoretical chemistry and theoretical physics whose work involves thetheoretical study of atoms, molecules and the solid state. It will beof interest to quantum chemists and solid state physicists, tomaterials scientists and applied mathematicians. ... Read more

Book Description

Interface and colloid science is an important, though often under-valued, branch of science. It has applications and ramifications in domains as disparate as agriculture, mineral dressing, oil recovery, chemical industry, biotechnology, medical science, and many more. Proper application of interface and colloid science requires factual knowledge and insight into the many basic laws of physics and chemistry upon which it is based. Fundamentals of Interface and Colloid Science is the first book to cover this field in the depth neccessary to be a valuable reference and an excellent textbook.
From the beginning to the end of the book, systems of growing complexity are treated gradually. The presentation is particularly suited to emphasize that interfaces are not autonomous phases. As a rule, interfacial properties can be varied only by changing the adjoining phases, so that the properties of these bulk phases must be understood first. The text also recognizes common principles behind a variety of phenomena, and helps the reader to understand them and to develop and improve processes. The systematic treatment of the material in the book makes this clear, and makes the text itself an important contribution to the field.

Key Features
* Systematic treatment of information

Each new edition has benefited from their suggestions and expert advice. The result of this remarkable tradition is now in your hands.

Now revised and updated, this Fourth Edition of  Physical Chemistry by Silbey, Alberty, and Bawendi continues to present exceptionally clear explanations of concepts and methods. The basic theory of chemistry is presented from the viewpoint of academic physical chemists, but detailed discussions of practical applications are integrated throughout. The problems in the book also skillfully blend theory and applications.

Highlights of the Fourth Edition:

  • A total of 170 computer problems appropriate for MATHEMATICATM, MATHCADTM, MATLABTM, or MAPLETM.
  • Increased emphasis on the thermodynamics and kinetics of biochemical reactions, including the denaturation of proteins and nucleic acids.
  • Expanded coverage of the uses of statistical mechanics, nuclear magnetic relaxation, nanoscience, and oscillating chemical reactions.
  • Many new tables and figures throughout the text.
