5-0 out of 5 stars Lets get Physical
Physical chemistry demands an aptitude for analytical know-how which is synonymous with mathematical expressions. A lot of books on the matter just present sophisms in their proving or derivation of potentially essential applications.

This book is far from that, it gives a refreshing outline and understanding of maths in physical chemistry and is also useful in analytical chemistry (I see no difference between the two but ah well names are given by institutions not nature). It still however requires you to be familiar with 100 level (1st year) undergraduate maths, post calc and post linear algebra.

My personal recommendation is that if your not confident with maths then go to the level of differential equations before attempting any hardline chemistry like physical/analytical or organic mechanisms.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice refresher book...
The truth is that many US chemists (hell, all chemists) are lazy when it comes to math. (Ok, so maybe some theory guys aren't, but they all dress in black and have bad attitudes or big egos so they aren't your garden variety chemist...) Well, the good news is that this book can really help to remedy some of those situations... Many of the very useful topics are presented in a concise manner and therefore in a non-threatening and appealing way... Very good as a first reference and also helps with some radial function transforms and the like (Jacobians and etc...) My only major problem with the book is that it doesn't have anything on statistics, but then again, most analytical books give a good appendix on that subject anyway, so you can find it there...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great math companion for the physical chemistry student
As a graduate student in the pharmaceutical sciences, I found this book to be a comprehensive and easy-to-use study companion. It reviews fundamental mathematical concepts and relationships (i.e. integration and differentialcalculus, vectors etc.) along with applied examples encountered in physicalchemistry. The book is very useful if the student pursues development ofmathematical models for his/her research.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear, concise book
this small book on symmetry and group theory is easy to understand and packed with examples. it is a small book (only about 300 pages) but everything in it is relevant and to the point. the writing is easy to grasp and the back includes character tables for all the common symmetry groups. buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Group Theory book that allows students to learn
The strength of this book is its many examples. Carter takes the concepts and applies them to simple inorganic or organic compounds. Very helpful to students. The end of chapter problems are nice as well. A great text and one that I would recommend to students as well as faculty.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much needed breath of fresh air!
This is a text set apart from the pack. It clearly states what other books attempt to describe. There need to be more texts on the market like this. Dr. Carter has taken a subject that has historically been elusive, and presented it in a comprehensive, READABLE volume. This text is helping me through my thesis in chemistry. It is highly practical, easily read, and heavily referenced, all of the qualities, I believe, that make up an excellent text! Excellent work! ... Read more

Book Description

Supramolecular compounds are multi-molecular assemblies possessing a great deal of structural, three-dimensional information. This is the first work to deal specifically with crystallographic studies combined with other methodologies, such as molecular dynamics, thermodynamics, NMR and atomic force microscopy.A wide range of supramolecular systems -- ranging from atoms to single 5 kDa molecules to high polymers -- involve molecular recognition based on non-covalent interactions having a precise geometry. The work focuses on general structural concepts as the basis for the chemical synthesis of preconceived compounds and devices, such as switches, sensors and biomimetic systems. Further progress will come from the imprinting of structural information into molecular components that spontaneously proceed to self-organization.The contributions of crystallographers, chemists, photochemists and physicists enhances the typical sequence: conception and design -- synthesis -- structure and visualization -- properties -- applications, taking the reader from first principles to the very forefront of the latest achievements. ... Book Description

Fire Safety Engineering, identified in the original edition as ‘a relatively new discipline, has since grown significantly in stature, as Fire Safety Engineers around the world begin to apply their skills to complex issues that defy solution by the old ‘prescriptive approach to fire safety. This second edition has the same structure as the first highly successful text, but has been updated with the latest research results. Fire processes are discussed and quantified in terms of the mechanisms of heat transfer and fluid flow. Problems addressed include:

  • The conditions necessary for ignition and steady burning of combustible materials to occur
  • How large a fire has to become before fire detectors and sprinkler heads will operate
  • The circumstances that can lead to flashover in a compartment
This book is unique in that it identifies fire science and fire dynamics and provides the scientific background necessary for the development of fire safety engineering as a professional discipline. It is essential reading for all those involved in this wide ranging field, from Fire Prevention Officers to Consulting Engineers, whether involved in problems of fire risk assessment, fire safety design, or fire investigation. It will also be of considerable interest and value to research scientists working in building design, fire physics and chemistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for chemistry related courses.
For students doing first or second year chemistry, they may often find themselves overwhelmed by tonnes of equations from different aspects of physical chemistry. Understanding a concept and memorizing equations for closed book exam is two different things. To make life easier, especially for examination preparation, it's good to make a brief note from text or leture notes. However, it's very time consuming. Why not look for a shortcut and get focus on essential stuffs? This title covers many of the core subjects in undergraduate chemistry course. As a chemical engineering student, I also found it very handy when I came across some fundamental concepts later in my course, for example like thermodynamics and electrochemistry. It presents abstract ideas into simplicity, essential concepts and equations are well defined. For students who want to learn ahead, this book also helps to understand the scope of each topic. If you want to build up a good foundation of physical chemistry, beside the prescribed texts, there is no substitute. ... Read more

Book Description

Ideal for courses in aerosol science or particle technology, Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2e is the only modern text that focuses on aerosol dynamics--the study of the factors that determine changes in the distribution of aerosol properties with respect to particle size. It covers fundamental concepts, experimental methods, and a wide variety of applications. Using the aerosol dynamics approach, the author integrates a broad range of topics including stochastic processes, aerosol transport theory, coagulation, formation of agglomerates, classical nucleation theory, and the synthesis of ultrafine solid particles. The book makes extensive use of scaling concepts and dimensional analysis and emphasizes physical and physicochemical interpretations. Basic concepts are illustrated by applications to many fields including air pollution control, the atmospheric sciences, microcontamination in the semiconductor industry, and the industrial manufacture of powders, pigments, additives, and nanoparticles.

Revised and expanded, this second edition features new chapters on the kinetics of agglomeration of non-coalescing particles and the fundamentals of aerosol reactor design. It covers the effects of turbulence on coagulation and gas-to-particle conversion and also discusses the formation of primary particles by the collision-coalescence mechanism. The chapter on the atmospheric aerosol has been completely rewritten within the aerosol dynamics framework. Its basic approach and topicality make Smoke, Dust, and Haze: Fundamentals of Aerosol Dynamics, 2e an essential guide for both students and researchers. ... Read more
