Book Description Reviews (60)
What sets this book apart is the focus on physics is perfect as we understand E&M theory at this point. Unlike other imperfect college texts like Lorraine and Courson, this book contains no errors. While some may no like "and the proof is left to the reader", the book is meant to teach people who are focused on physics but can describe the process mathematically as well as in regular language. The assumption is that there has already been a rigorous introduction of both physics and mathematics so this book is NOT a casual read. The beauty of this book is that it's not just teaching knowledge but it teaches one how to think. To those who can rise to the occasion and draw upon their education, professors and peers, there is the satisfaction of really understanding E&M clearly and concisely. To those who only seek rote knowledge, this book will be too challenging.

Book Description Science has recently begun to prove what ancient myth and religion have always espoused: There may be such a thing as a life force. Lynne McTaggart, indefatigable investigative journalist, reveals a radical new biological paradigm -- that on our most fundamental level, the human mind and body are not distinct and separate from their environment but a packet of pulsating power constantly interacting with this vast energy sea. The Field is a highly readable scientific detective story that offers a stunning picture of an interconnected universe and a new scientific theory that makes sense of supernatural phenomena. Original, well researched, and well documented by distinguished sources, The Field is a book of hope and inspiration for today's world. Reviews (19)
THE FIELD describes how scientists have gradually become aware of what appears to be a unifying energy structure in our universe. This "Zero Point Field" provides us with a simpler explanation for how things work than previous overly-complex ideas require. Simplicity in science is a good thing, because it generally indicates which theories will win out as time goes by. The Zero Point Field theory demonstrates it's elegant simplicity by allowing physicists to derive the famous equation F=ma (rather than take it as a starting assumption), and by helping medical practitioners understand the underlying scientific basis for homeopathy. Our scientific conceptualization of this universe has changed considerably over the last few centuries and now faces one of the biggest overhauls ever -- and THE FIELD demonstrates why the Zero Point Field is likely to be the last frontier for us to explore. THE FIELD is packed with detailed descriptions of some of the most exciting experiments recently conducted by leading researchers in the field of consciousness such as: Cleve Backster, Jacques Benveniste, William Braud, Bob Jahn, Edgar Mitchell, Fritz-Albert Popp, Hal Puthoff, Rupert Sheldrake, Russell Targ, Elisabeth Targ, and Charles Tart. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Book Description We've all heard of the Big Bang, and yet few of us truly know what it is. Renowned for making difficult ideas much less difficult than they might first appear, Simon Singh is our perfect guide to explaining why cosmologists believe that the Big Bang is an accurate description of the origin and evolution of the universe. This highly readable and entertaining book tells the story of the many brilliant, often eccentric scientists who fought against the establishment idea of an eternal and unchanging cosmos. From such early Greek cosmologists as Anaximander to recent satellite measurements taken deep in space, Big Bang is a narrative full of anecdotes and personal histories. With characteristic clarity, Simon Singh tells the centuries-long story of mankind's attempt to understand how the universe came to be, a story which itself begins some 14 billion years ago (give or take a billion years). Simon Singh shows us that it is within the capability of all of us -- in his expert hands -- to understand the Big Bang: the fundamental theory in all of science, and a high point -- perhaps the high point -- of human achievement.

Amazon.com Using computer graphic and 3-D tools to create accurate images is easy; usingthem to produce beautiful, inviting, memorable images requires more thantechnical skill. [digital] Lighting & Rendering introduces reasons andtechniques for using light, shadow, texture, and composition. The book is notsoftware-specific, but demonstrates techniques that are applicable to almost any3-D graphics application. It is assumed, however, that your 3-D software ofchoice supports such basic rendering features as soft shadows, light maps, colored gels, depth-of-field blur, motion blur, and so on. The first half of the book discusses lighting and shadow: lighting workflow;light types; using lighting rigs, such as three-point lighting; shadows andshadow type; and light quality. Lighting--how it's used, where it's placed, the kind of shadow it casts, its intensity--is critical to any image, whetheryou're creating a photorealistic computer re-creation or a surreal fantasypicture. [digital] Lighting & Rendering explains not just how to usevarious lighting techniques, but why. An outstanding chapter on color and its use through composition and lightingoffers insight into how colors are perceived and how color affects a scene. Theimportance of color, hue, and saturation should not be underestimated, and theexamples in this chapter, like in every other, drive home that point. Additional chapters cover exposure, composition and staging, materials andtextures, and compositing. There is no accompanying CD-ROM, but theplatform-generic nature of the book (and of the subject matter itself) makes itunnecessary. The book is designed to educate and inform; it is up to readers toapply what they learn to their own projects. Although fewer than 300 pages long, [digital] Lighting & Rendering is aninformative and important book, useful to any computer graphics artist. Eachpage is filled with fascinating, immediately helpful information about thecraft. The publisher spared no expense on the book's production, either--everypage is in color, with at least one color photo per page illuminating the text.Mr. Birn's experience and insight are not to be underestimated, and this book isnot to be missed. --Mike Caputo Reviews (32)

It appears that this book was rushed to publication in order to be first. Particularly in the chapter on H.264, there are many typos and incomplete figures. I found myself referring to Mary Boas' book for a few examples if I wanted to learn anything, but when you get to Group Theory you'll end up lost because the professor will run right over the material and textbooks on that subject arent that great. If i'm looking for an equation or a mathematical rule, this book is great. Ive used it for Quantum and Jackson E&M quite a bit.
My students have had a hard time learning from this book. Also, the binding of this $99 book is cheap cardboard -- the hardcover edition does not really have a hard cover. All in all,
I reccomend this book. Like all other Math Methods books I have seen it will require other texts as supplements if one wants a reference for every problem one could encounter. ... Read more

Book Description A completely revised and expanded edition of the international bestseller (over 230,000 copies sold) Reviews (26)
This excellent, thoughtful, break-through book offers a new way of thinking about organizations and leadership. In clear, compelling language, it emphasizes the ways we are all part of an ever-changing natural order. Wheatley explains the need to get rid of our old out-dated mechanistic models and adapt our organizations to prosper in the future. Our accepted analytical world view, based on using logical analysis and relying numbers to chart progress, should be replaced, Wheatley says. She makes a compelling case and urges organizations to become more effective by becoming more human and natural. We [...] recommend this pivotal book to leaders at all levels.
I work in a Jesuit high school and part of my job is to connect my community to the new world that is building all around us. This book is a gift to organizations worldwide and will help those who lead their organizations, no matter the size, to do so from a "personal centeredness" of trust and integrity. Her insights offer hope as we struggle with the great issues of our time.
The book could have been kept to under 100 pages without all the extra examples. Then again, I see how many examples can engage someone, especially if he is not familar with organizations. Nevertheless, if she would have stuck to her point that our current paradigm in understanding organizations is from the seventeenth century and illusionary that would have sufficed. The book does not offer any concrete examples for working with systems instead of parts, which is the main point the author drives home. The author does offer a theoretical framework. The framework is a lot better because it is meant to apply to many situations. This book is worth reading if one is familiar with old models of organizations and leadership. Otherwise, reading it will be too abstract and meaningless.
However, the reasons for applying these principles developed from science to organizations are not well established in this book, in my opinion. The applications may be valid, but a strong case for them is not made here. For example, one claim made to justify one conclusion is that "organizations are open systems and are responsive to the same self-organizing dynamics as all other life." (p. 97). This is a bold claim, to link life sciences to management, that is not well substantiated in the book. The author seems to revel in the ancient (and ongoing) philosophical tension between the parts and the whole, calling us to look at the whole of a system, though rejecting objective reality (an ultimate whole), and with a bit of Gnostic thinking as well: "Matter doesn't matter" (p. 153), Also, this is not an informative work, rather its intention appears to be persuasive. The author does reference many works in the scientific literature, but it is not intended to be a review or strict proof (I hope) of her position. Some aspects of science that seem to me to contradict some of her conclusions are not discussed, such as the order imposed top-down in the theory of relativity (according to my limited understanding of it), and the fact that some changes must be wholly destructive and cannot have positive effects (e.g., certain genetic mutations). Again, some good points are made, but their basis is not well established here. As an industrial engineer, I do not think we should throw away all the current practices, and hopefully that attitude is not simply self-serving. I cannot recommend this particular book, but hope there is a more substantial treatment of these concepts elsewhere.

Book Description Unlike other books that discuss technical presentations, this book anchors its advice in the experiences of scientists and engineers, including such successful presenters as Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Niels Bohr, and Rita Levi-Montalcini, as well as currently active laboratory directors, scientists, and engineers. In addition to examining successful presentations, Alley also discusses the errors that cause many scientific presentations to flounder, providing a list of ten critical errors to avoid. The insights and tools in this book will guide readers to deliver outstanding presentations. Praise for Michael Alley's THE CRAFT OF SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATIONS: "Alley has revamped the way our research center makes presentations-particularly the way we design our presentation slides." Book Description More than 500,000 students have purchased previous editions of this book! That's because this powerful study tool offers clear explanations and constant reinforcements, so that students quickly grasp this potentially difficult subject matter. It takes students from vectors to thermodynamics to applied nuclear physics, teaching effective problem-solving skills. The numerous, valuable appendixes make often-needed, basic information easy to find quickly, so this book is also an excellent reference. The new edition of this best-selling book gives users a solid grasp of the principles of general physics through their application to a large number of carefully selected problems. The Ninth Edition features a new order of presentation that reflects the current physics curriculum and textbooks. Existing problems have been updated, and new problems have been added that deal with more realistic and practical situations, including those in the life sciences. Reviews (6)
Don't bother with this book if you feel lost in physics because it won't really help you.
The topics covered in the book are much too numerous to list out. I compared this with my physics textbook for science and engineering students. If you are having trouble understanding your textbook, use this text as a supplement. It does walk through problems and has problems you can try. Regarding the practice problems, the answers are there, but they are right there. I would prefer to have the answers on another page, but this is still a good book.
There are 46 chapters in the book covering many topics, starting from a beginner's standpoint. I must admit that the explanation in the beginning of each chapter is a little dry but it is concise and to the point. The most useful part of this book or guide is the many problems it has for each chapter. After the explanation part of the chapter, the chapter then goes on to show you problems and the solutions to them. It shows you how to solve them, each step of the way. After these problems, it then gives you many, many practice problems that you can do yourself, it also gives you the answers so that you can check to see if you were right in your calculations. There are so many problems for you to do that it is great practice and after all of them, you feel as if you have truly mastered the concept because the problems build off one another, starting with the easiest then getting progressively harder at the end. I think this is a great book and a great supplement to a Physics course. However, there is one drawback in that this is not really a textbook, it does have some explanation at the beginning of the chapter which is good but it is not like your usual textbook which has more in-depth explanation. But, if you are using this book as a supplement or in connection with another book, then this is all you have to ask for.
