Book Description

Helping students grasp the "why" of algebra through patient explanations, Hirsch and Goodman gradually build students' confidence without sacrificing rigor. To help students move beyond the "how" of algebra (computational proficiency) to the "why" (conceptual understanding), the authors introduce topics at an elementary level and return to them at increasing levels of complexity. Their gradual introduction of concepts, rules, and definitions through a wealth of illustrative examples - both numerical and algebraic-helps students compare and contrast related ideas and understand the sometimes subtle distinctions among a variety of situations. This author team carefully prepares students to succeed in higher level mathematics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love it...
I've used the system for years, since my father got me a copy from the Popular Science book club back in the 60's. You may recall that was the era of the "New Math".

Unlike what some other reviewers have said, calculation is NOT the least important aspect of mathematics. Mental arithmetic gives you a feel for the numbers, a familiarity with them. As a former math teacher myself, I wish I had a nickel for every kid who said "Well, that's what the calculator said" but had no idea whether the "answer" is reasonable.

Trachtenberg's system helps you to make the numbers your own and to make them serve you. While it's a shame about the current price, it's still a bargain if it helps you or your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
Ok, I'll admit it. I did not read this book. My father did, when I was in third grade and failing miseribly. He taught me this method at home every night and when I was tested at the end of the year I had not only mastered multiplication and division, but finished the test before anyone else. The addition/subtraction was a God-send as well. If you have a child struggling with math, this is an excellent resource. Take it from one who knows, and who has the degree to prove it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes
I have an old copy of this book, published about 1970, I believe. I've been working though it, and was very happy with it...until I got to multiplication by 5. I don't know if it's fixed later, but the method given is incorrect every time except the problem used as an example! I have triple- and quadruple-checked my answers and have come up with the exact same wrong ones every time I use the rule given. Somehow I doubt all those people who have written those glowing reviews have actually read all the way through the dang book. Either that or it was fixed in a later edition and I simply don't know about it. If anyone has some sort of answer for me, please email me at lady_michiko@yahoo.com. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book
This book makes numbers and playing with numbers fun. Most importantly, you get a very firm underlying knowledge of how numbers relate and work together. It's MUCH more useful than simply memorizing tables. And way more fun, of course. For children (and adults) who are either bored or too challenged by memorization, Trachtenberg's methods make the whole thing a delightful and exciting process. I demonstrated some multiplication to my niece and nephew, both high achievers in school... they were blown away with it... their parents ran off to buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Pragmatic
Like many, my first exposure to Trachtenberg came in the 60's when I found a copy in my High School's library. It always stayed with me and now, some 30+ years later, it became the solution to a couple of "problems".

A homeless man, developmentally disabled, had gotten a job at a large drugstore chain. It was a very big step for him and he is rightfully proud of himself for facing the challenges that getting the job entailed, but he wanted to advance and that meant learning math. He got himself book on math (for remedial education to enter college) and went to work studying. It was very difficult for him, especially operations with proper fractions, but he was learning. It took 3 months to learn about lowest common denominators. He asked me to work with him, and I decided to. Three months later he can do basic math, in his head. He now has the math competency to take, and pass, the company test for math proficiency. Trachtenberg's system is the one that made it possible. I want to point out that he is competent in the application of math, but not math literate and he still has trouble when presented with "word problems", but in terms of his capacity to do the job at the next level, he is ready.

The other "problem" also involves the education of adults, in this case homeless adults who lack a set of skills that are needed for employability, one of which is basic mathematical competence. The environment is one of adult education for the homeless aimed at achieving a GED (operating under the auspices of a large church). In a demonstration of Trachtenberg's system involving 4 subjects with the most minimal of skills, they achieved sufficient proficiency within 3 weeks to pass the math skills part of the GED exam where word problems weren't involved. The ability to deal with word problems relates to cognitive skills apart from math. Again, we are talking about competency in operations, not literacy. They are currently reviewing my proposal to replace their current math program with a Trachtenberg based approach.

Cutler's book presents this very valuable tool in a clear and concise manner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true review of this Book
In general, this book satisfies its purpose as being a math workbook, not lesson book, which provides a large number of SAT-like math questions, partitioned into categories. The book does not teach concepts like the Barron's book, but through doing the questions and reading the explanations you can extract the concepts and the train of thought. The only part where the book is slightly flawed is that some of its questions, towards the end of a question set, titled "hard," really require more thinking than is required on the real exam. However, this can only help your practice, but do not be discouraged if you can only solve some of those!

5-0 out of 5 stars 80 point increase!
I used this book for about two weeks, completing all of the sections. I looked over all of the questions I had gotten wrong on my first go-around with the book on the Thursday bfore the test. I also took one of the practice tests, and it predicted within 20 points what I got on the real Math SAT.

In my sophomore year, I had gotten a 640, which was disappointing, but after using this book for two short weeks my score shot up to a 720 (as a Junior)! I would recommend this book to anybody wishing to increase their score with a concise, concentrated workbook.

Unless your score is very low on the Math section, a book full of basic skills and tricks will probably not help you. Using this workbook could be the difference between a mediocre 640 and a pretty-durn-good 720 (and only in two weeks).

Good luck!

PS: On the SAT, there was a problem that even used the same numbers as one of the questions in the Kaplan book! Weird...

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I would definately recommend that you buy this book. The practice that it gave me was extremely helpful, as well as the "SAT Math in a Nutshell" section. The format was easy to follow and true to the SAT, giving me plenty of practice, and help where I needed it. It improved my math SAT score 50 points - from 630 to 680. And I only did about half of the book! Imagine if I had worked through the whole thing. It's not hard, however - the book is designed so that you only tackle one (approximately) 30-minute section at a time. Just remember - for best results, make sure that you start using this book 3 weeks to a month ahead of time.

The verbal workbook helped me even more, raising my score 100 points, from 660 to 760.

Kaplan's math workbook is definately worthwhile. It WILL improve your scores!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Practice
If you are familiar with the SAT's already, I guess it would work well with you. It provides alot of drill practices, and I believe that after completing the book it does work. I did pretty well on the math section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect!
After using Barrons Math Workbook to learn all the math concepts, I've used this book to practice as many SAT I level problems as much as possible. I've scored 780 on my test. I've done 1 set a day for a month and few days. There are 28 days. After solving all the sets in the book, SAT I Math was just a breeze. ... Read more

Book Description

This book will be of interest to anyone of any age who likes good problems. Pre-calculus background is presumed.

Over the years perhaps the most popular of the MAA problem books have been the high school contest books, covering the yearly American High School Mathematics Examinations (AHSME) that began in 1950, co-sponsored from the start by the MAA. Book V also includes the first six years of the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) which was developed as an intermediate step between the AHSME and the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO). The AIME has a unique answer format--all answers are integers between 0 and 999. The editors of this volume, George Berzsenyi and Stephen B. Maurer, were respectively the chairs of the AIME and the AHSME. In addition to a thorough index, they have added material to Contest Problem Book V not included in Contest Books I–IV, such as: a comprehensive worldwide guide to other problem materials, additional solutions to selected problems, and information on the development and history of the AHSME, AIME, and USAMO tests. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start for Future Problem Solvers
"Contest Problem Book V" will be helpful for students preparing for the America Mathematics Competitions (AMC), and it will be a great place to start for anyone who wants to become good at solving problems. The problems in this volume require only precalculus mathematics, but they are non-routine. Some of the problems can be quite challenging; although in general, the problems are less difficult than olympiad or Putnam problems.

This book stands out among the dozens of problem collections out there because it contains a bibliography of problem collections, books on problem solving, and mathematics journals that have problem sections. More than just a list of other books, this bibliography contains extensive notes and can therefore serve as a valuable source of guidance for students learning the art of problem solving.

At present there are six "Contest Problem Books" each containing reprints of the American High School Mathematics Exam (AHSME). Like the others, this book contains AHSMEs; but unlike the others, it also contains reprints of the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME). The AIME's format makes it unique among math competitions. In my opinion it is one of the most fun of all mathematics competitions. Doing AIME problems is great way for people to develop the skills necessary to be able to do olympiad or Putnam problems.

So because of the amazingly helpful bibliography, because of the AHSME and AIME problems it contains, and because doing AIME problems is great way to get good enought to do olympiad-level problems, this volume will be great a place to start for anyone who wants to be a good problem solver. I thought the problems were a lot of fun, and the advice in the bibliography helped me out a great deal. It is a pleasure to give this book five stars!

I'm a culinary student and found this book very helpful for converting units into metric units. I also used the following to study for the National Servsafe Test which is also on amazon.com:
