5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Great book.Really does get you thinking differently about mathematics. The stuff they teach you in school is just to complicated and drawn out. This is not.A must for those who want to 'cut to the chase'.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than original
The tricks in this book are better than the first book. If you can only buy one, get More Rapid Math Tricks and Tips : 30 Days to Number Mastery. It has some of the same features of the first book but better tricks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tricks? yes, but some excellent rapid calculation methods
While I haven't actually used this book I have used its predecessor and find that the two are very similar in format. I have gone through all 26 of the sample pages and found each "trick" or method is very well designed. Each consists of a concise but clear explanation, two or three fully explained examples followed by two sets of exercises. the first are easy applications; the second harder. All of the methods are valid rapid calculation devices. Unfortunately, most of the multiplication and division methods involve special cases which the average person may not ever see or recognize in typical daily encounters with the need for computation. The addition and subtraction methods are more general. The book will prove most valuable to someone who is already fairly accomplished in computation skills but wishes to brush up on them and, perhaps, to pick up a few rapid calculation methods which can be used very frequently. Otherwise, the book may help one brush up on rusty comp. skills or prove interesting in attempting to discover why the various "tricks" work (the author does not explain the mathematical basis on which the methods rest - he deals in "how-to" not "why?". One final caution - if you have not memorized the basic arithmetic combinations of addition, subtraction, mulltiplication, and division this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a word: Excellent
This is the book to go to to remember how to do all those mathematical things, before calculus, we used to know but either forgot, took for granted, or shortcut and circumvented. Perfect example: solving inequalities involving absolute values -> the method I was using was producing right answers, however it was 'shotcutting' rather than solving the problem properly and robustly. Had a look inside...found an example...instant recollection and on my way again, the right way!

As far as I can tell there are not obvious mistakes (the review further down obviously has a really old copy or is just mistaken) and the coverage is quite comprehensive (though there are no problems for you to solve...as the title says, it is entirely solved problems and LOTS of them!). This isn't a book to teach you everything (though, I think if you worked through every example in whatever section, you would be a significantly better mathematician then when you started). As Einstein said, learng by example isn't just a way to learn...it's the only way to learn! It is a fine supplemental text and reference. The solutions are very clear, explicit and step by step. There are no logic jumps that can leave you wondering how the hell did they get from here to there? It is very systematic (even with explanations of what operation they are doing along the way- like a good teacher explaning how to do something without jumping steps).

Personally I regard the $18 as money well spent. It is an enormous book for the price, rich in content and extremely helpful. And given the price, what more could you want? It's a very useful addition to your library, if only as a reference work. There are basic attack strategies at the beginning of each chapter and masses of problems! Sure, the theory it covers is contained within the problems, not explicitly...hence you may need your course book along with this (or maybe as I said earlier: just try to learn from this book, which might be kinda weird and fun).

In all: well worth 5 stars! YOu can't expect a magical panacea for all your mathematical woes to be found within...but it tries! And it does deliver a great deal...

Happy Mathematics!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're mathematically competent but lazy, get this book!
This book is not a tutorial or self-teaching guide, it's more of a reference book. If you are not familiar with intermediate algebra and trigonometry this book will not be useful to you. But if you know the basic concepts of alg/trig you will find this book useful for that one difficult problem that is in every workset of your textbook. So, if you don't want to spend time concentrating on one problem, you can spend time searching for a similar problem in this book that will get you started on the original problem. But if you need the entire problem worked out with explanations this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book adheres to the highest editorial standards
With all due respect to the reviewer who found two errors in this book, these mistakes were corrected over 16 years ago. Our assumption is that he has a very outdated edition. The reviews of this book have been excellent and we are confident that it will help any student in pre-calculus.

3-0 out of 5 stars dismal forebodings
What can you say about a book whose answer to the 10th problem, "What percent of 100 is 99.5?" is 105%, and to "what percent of 4 is 200" is 2%?

3-0 out of 5 stars precalc-demana etal
The topics in this text have enough breadth to cover
Functions (algebraic, transcendentals, etc) and their Graphs.

One typical feature that is extremely disturbing is the fact that the authors decided to throw in mathematical terms without
defining them first. For instance, as early as Chapter 1.2,
the term "lim f(x) as x approaches ***" is introduced so that
the graphical concept "continuity" can be taught.
There is much more to
limits than just "plotting the graph, seeing where the curve goes". The purpose of PreCalc as suggested by its name is to prepare the students to take Calculus. And if we do not want to
cover some concepts correctly (algebraically and graphically - the motto of this text!) but only to do it in a touchy-feely sense, then please do NOT cover it in PreCalc. Do it in Calculus!

The only reason I ever used this is because someone else chose it for our multiple sections course! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Math Illiterate!
After years of thinking that I just couldn't do math, this book did the impossible. It taught me not only how to solve math problems but to understand how I solved them. I actually feel comfortable with math and want to go as far as I can learning it. Instead of being torture it is now an intriguing subject. I made it to Algebra II in high school ten years ago but I never knew what I was doing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they "can't do math". I think some people just learn differently than it is taught in most public schools. You CAN learn math (if I could, then you can too!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
It's a very good book that is easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like having a personal tutor..that you like
To say this book helped me is an understatement. It not only helps me in my college studies, but in every day situations. I am purchasing another copy today for my niece, who is experiencing some difficulty in comprehending math. Of course she is labeled with a "Learning Disability". Well after my husband & I helped her with her homework, we realized "she doesn't have a disability"....it is the way the school "explains" math concepts that is making math a mystery to her. When I spoke to her and brought math "down to earth" as this book does....she is catching on quick. I am sending this book to her today, for I know it will help her through-out her life. To the authors I want say....Thank you for making math understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL tool for students of ALL AGES!
I am a mom who graduated many years ago, who is having to freshen up on my math and algebra skills so I can help my teenage children understand their work in school. This book makes learning algebra for my 16 year old son, who suffers from a Learning Disability, easy to comprehend, while refreshing what I learned many years ago. It takes you through practically every step imaginable to understand the rules, terms and equations of algebra. I never thought learning algebra could be so easy! My son, who has ALWAYS struggled with math, now actually says that algebra is FUN! Just keeping him interested in a subject is challenging enough, but with this book, he actually looks forward to the challenge!

Thanks for making this book available! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, actually makes math fun
This book taught me methods to solving math problems quickly and easily. I have owned it for many years, but still refer back to it. The author explains each step in detail, in simple to understand instructions. I recommend this book to anyone, especially if you have to take mathematical, timed aptitude tests. It's actually a joy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
For someone who is pained by the very thought of math, I found this book such a relief! It truly teaches very simple techniques to quicken and ease the practice of math. Frankly I'm kind of annoyed that this book was available when I was in grammar school, but I was taught math using the old tired and tedious methods we all know and hate. This book was published in 1966 and should have augmented, if not outright replaced, many math books in every classroom. This book should be a perennial bestseller. Even if you're a math whiz, this book will make you an even greater whiz. Even if you only use a sliver of what this book teaches (which I doubt!) it will still be worth your time and expense many times over. God bless Harry Lorayne!! I can not recommend this book enough!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars dead reckoning:calculating without instruments
I bought this book so I could continue with a higher than arithmetic math. What I discovered was that although it does show algebra and other math, there are NO exercises in this book. It has fantastic math examples and processes. I wish it was designed to bring us along with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The magnum opus of mental arithmetic!
Imagine transforming your mind into a slide-rule with the added bonus of extra precision! "Dead Reckoning" is the ONLY book of its kind, running the gamut from ordinary operations like multiplication and division to roots (square, higher-order, and reciprocal), logarithms and their inverses, and finally trigonometric functions and their inverses. The book also contains other gems such as factorization techniques, continued fractions (for creating rational approximations), and also an algorithm which permits mental square root extractions to arbitrary precision. Those who feel daunted by symbolic formulas needn't worry, the book is replete with examples which provide both clarity and realism to the presentation. The author has an engaging style and has obviously taken great pains; the clarity of the exposition is excellent throughout. Moreover, the text is profusely referenced for those wishing to further pursue a topic that piques their interest. The techniques and strategies contained therein are as practical as they are efficient and are equally amenable to quick pen-and-paper calculations for those not interested in pursuing mental computations. Heartily recommended! - Grant Nixon ... Read more
