Excellent Textbook Approach
This excellent textbook illuminates for beginners and veterans alike the wonderful world of oil and gas accounting -- which is more of an art than a science. It is clear and concise as to how to account for the acquisition and amortization of unproved property, though it does not offer advice for dealing with the obese lazy sluggards who typically take up space in oil company land departments, and go their merry ways without regard for proper financial record-keeping. FOOAGA properly instructs regarding the tracking and reporting of exploratory well costs, though it ignores the reality that operations personnel are notoriously lax about tracking well costs, thus rendering well-drilling cost accruals useless much of the time (typically leading to suprising late charges). The book wonderfully explains revenue interests and working interests, though it glazes over the reality that accounting for such activity is a nightmare in major oil companies who have cut back their accounting staffs to the bone (or idiotically outsourced their accounting staffs, completely demoralizing everyone and ensuring they will receive only the bare-bones, skeletal minimum efforts from their outsourced wage slaves) (and it doesn't mention all of the work that oil companies, hoping to operate on the cheap, have sent overseas to Bangalore sweat shops). While presenting textbook situations that look great on paper, this book kindly omits the sort of hell experienced by the oil companies whose hare-brained management bought the SAP accounting system -- which is probably the worst means ever devised for tracking oil/gas accounting activities.

Yes, this fine book paints a rosy picture and looks great on paper, but it doesn't really tell you about the poor chumps on the front lines of oil/gas accounting, struggling with all of the obstacles and idiocy they must overcome simply to close the books each month. ... Read more

Just the right balance between brevity and detail
Leffler, Pattarozzi, and Sterling have produced a useful and interesting book about the challenge of drilling for oil at incredible depths beneath the ocean. The book strikes just the right balance, as both a brief overview of the industry and a detailed look at essential concepts of deepwater exploration and production.

This book begins with a brief history of oil exploration, both onshore and offshore. Throughout, the authors provide boxes with interesting facts and background material that help maintain the reader's interest. Some boxes are stories of innovations in the field (such as John Chance's invention of a system to "decode" the jittered government GPS data) whlie other boxes explain some of the unfamiliar terms of the oilfield world, like use of "Christmas Tree" for a certain piece of equipment and the use of unusual names for oilfield leases (such as "Bullwinkle" and "Cognac").

My only dissatisfaction with the book is the lack of a bibliography to assist the reader in finding more information on certain subjects covered. Also, the index should include more key names and terms. (For example, the name John Chance is not in the index despite the fact that his discovery is mentioned in a supplemental box.) I like any book that I read to have an extensive index so that I can quickly return to interesting passages.

The book is a relatively quick read. In just one day I read about one-third of the book (well into Chapter 4). The book assumes that the reader has little technical knowledge (but at least some technical interest) and would be a good introduction to the oilfield terminology and concepts, especially for nontechnical personnel who have to work with the engineers and geologists. (For the record, I am a civil engineer, and I worked a little with the oil industry in the past. My current interest is in the creative aspects of design and innovation.)

Broad, concise, and interesting
This is a good place to start if you're looking for a very general introduction to deepwater exploration and production (E&P). Almost nothing gets a lot of detail, but almost nothing is omitted. The chapters cover the following topics:

1 - history of offshore drilling
2 - the move into deeper and deeper water in the eighties
3 - exploration
4 - drilling and completion
5 - development systems
6 - fixed structures -- compliant towers, concrete, etc.
7 - floating systems -- TLPs, FPSOs, spars, and so on
8 - subsea systems
9 - topsides
10 - piplines, flowlines, and risers
11 - technology and the future

The writing is sound, and there are plenty of decent graphics -- pictures of the gigantic Bullwinkle platform; photographs and schematics of equipment and layouts; and a couple of colour plates showing seismic analysis displays. The chapters are really just overviews -- although there's a fair amount of detail in some areas, particularly in platform construction and assembly, there is so much to say that they can't do more than scratch the surface.

The book does give you quite a lot of vocabulary to work with, which is valuable. There are a multitude of online oil and gas glossaries that you might want to search for via the web, but the narrative form that this book provides is a pretty good way to understand them too.

If you are new to E&P and would like a good overview, this is a pretty good place to start, but it won't take you very far in any one direction. ... Read more

Old reservoir engineering
I have read the book and found that it basically covers the state of the art of "classical" reservoir engineering of about the 60's or 70's, with some material taken from papers published in the 80's and 90's. It is outdated to a great extent.

The virtue of this book is that it reviews a wide range of topics like MBEs, IPRs, basic reservoir fluid properties, etc. Good for undergrads taking courses in reservoir engineering.

The statements at the back side of the cover (second edition) are misleading. This book does not contain "all of the information and insight a reservoir engineer must have to do the job right", nor is it "the complete resource for students and professionals in the petroleum industry". This book is only at the introductory level and there are many other books like Dake and Craft & Hawkins which cover almost the same topics with more detail.

If it is an extensive reference book what you are looking for, I would rather recommend the Petroleum Engineering Handbook. It is more comprehensive and can cost you about the same price or less (if you are an SPE member).

Great book to find all basic topics on reservoir engineering
I've seen that all topics on reservoir engineering have been covered in sufficient detail and very systematically. I strongly reccommed the book to those looking for a starting book on reservoir engineering and to those who, after a while, got lost among SPE papers and specialized books to come back to the backbone of the issue.

Profit is too large a word
I've never broken even over many years of prospecting and searching for the Lost Adams Diggings. But I wouldn't trade a moment of it. This book will help the reader by giving an excuse to go into the wilderness. The first time you look into the bottom of a pan and see glitter will be a moment you'll remember the remainder of your life. Buy it and do it!

She Makes It Fun
I thoroughly enjoyed Gail Butler's book. Sometimes I felt as if I was there with here. Its an easy read and very instructional. It makes me want to go to California or Arizona and start digging, panning and nugget detecting. Fun and informative!

Good beginning Gold Panning Book
The real gem of this book for the amatuer Gold Panner/Sluicer is how to "read" a river to pick the best place to start working instead of wasting fruitless months like I did panning in the wrong places and finding lots of black sand, but no "color."

Waste of money
The book is unpractical for the working engineer and the mathematics is simplified calculus which is not understandable to the average practicing engineer, but seems to be in favor of academic types. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn why production equipment works. The chapter on multiphase flow is its only saving grace, but any cheap paper on the subject will say as much. I would recomened the OGCI books on Production Technology. Way cheaper...way better...

A very pratical guide...
John thinks of every eventuality in the field, and especially recommends a very natty rubber mac - I can just see him in it! This book covers every geophysical field technique useful for four or less people (which does NOT include remote sensing, as the person above seems not to recognise). It is written in the same dry, and sometimes faintly sarcastic vein, that anyone who knows him will recognise.
