4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer
Too many times over the years I've encountered treasure hunters who didn't know how to pan gold, didn't know how to evaluate a watercourse, didn't know how to recognize gold if they saw it. If you just want an excuse to go out into the wilderness for a few days of fun and solitude, or if you plan to search for the Dutchman or the Lost Adams, this is a good book to begin your education.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old Time Prospecting History Lesson
If you want some interesting history of gold discovery and the way things used to be done, this is the book for you.As for myself, I was looking for modern methods ( I didn't check the publication date of 1982) but did find the history lesson interesting. Not much mention in this book about electronic gold prospecting! Some of the camping suggestions are a bit old but with a little modern adaptation they still work.Overall an easy, interesting read. ... Read more

Book Description

Whether you're an experienced evaluator of mineral projects, a student, or a decision maker who is not a practitioner but must use evaluation results, this new book is an essential reference for your bookshelf. Designed to complement traditional engineering texts, this book emphasizes the concepts of mineral project evaluation rather than computational details. It describes various economic evaluation techniques typically employed (including conventional cost analysis, discounted cash flow, and option analysis), their uses, and their relationships with geological, technological, and financial evaluations. Also discussed are the strengths and weaknesses of commonly practiced evaluation methods.

This book explains the practical difficulties in conducting an analysis and correctly interpreting the results, as well as the use of alternative techniques. Because many existing texts do not adequately discuss the meanings and application of merit measures, such as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR), this book represents an exciting departure from standard reference tools. Contents include:why NPV and IRR are both valid and useful merit measuresthe shortcomings of conventional NPV and IRR analysisthe dangers of scenario analysiswhy conventional incremental analysis is not needed to correctly calculate IRRwhy the desire to achieve NPV-consistent IRR is misleadinghow competitive cost analysis is conducted and usedwhy option pricing is an important addition to the evaluation process.

When used correctly, evaluation methods are powerful tools to help us understand the economics of investment projects. Don't miss out on this new source. Contains glossary and full index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, Worth the money!!!
This book gives the reader good idea of where to go in Alaska if you using the highway system as your primary transportation method. The book is grouped by each Highway (Dalton, Glenn, etc) and each sub-area within that highway as to how well you can expect to do while prospecting in each area.
The Author has rated each sub-area (Creek/River System) between 1 and 3 stars. Each area lists if you can only pan, or use a sluice, dredge, etc. Times of the year that you are permitted to dredge, etc. It also lists the type of gold you are likely to find. (fine, course, nuggets, etc.)
I haven't used the book in actual practice yet, but plan to this summer. I would say that from what I have read that it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Geologists, Geomathematicians, GIS specialists
The authors have done a great job in presenting the materials of diverse fields, including GIS, remote sensing, multivariate statistics, many more. The book also presented an excellent review for neural networks. All the methods included in the book have proved to be effective in data integration for mineral exploration and planning purposes. I would recommend this book to any geoscientists who are interested in computer modeling and integration of geoscience data sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for All Geoscientists
Guocheng Pan and D. Harris had put a great effort into the organization of the book structure. The book contains many subjects, all relevant to the information systhesis. The book was clearly written and it is readable for most geo-professionals and graduate students in geo-fields. The quantitative methods presented in the book are rigurous, but easy to follow. The examples in the book are also derived from real-world cases. In sum, I am really impressed with the book in terms of its quality and value offered to geoscientists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Short Review of Mines, Minerals and Miners
Finally, a book about the mining industry in Western North Carolina and the families who made their living in this hard industry. The reader will develop a good foundation of knowledge regarding the specific mining operations in Western North Carolina. Mr. Presnell made sure he gave credit to the miner and their families by relating several stories about both the good times and some very sad moments those families endured.

I would highly recommend this book as both educational and entertainment value. Mr. Presnell has a very interesting style of writing and I look forward to his next book. Thank you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Highly sensationalized book
While much of what this Mr. Garrett writes can be helpful to someone new to the hobby of metal detecting (such as learning how to pinpoint targets, and how to dig for coins), this book must be read with these things in mind:
1) It is heavily biased since it is written by Charles Garrett of Garrett metal detectors. He neglects to mention or picture other metal detecor brands.
2) Mr. Garrett's discussion on detector technology is largely obsolete.
3) Many of the claims presented in the book are highly sensationalized and idealistic. Sure, the stories about people finding gold coins and hoards of buried coins are entertaining to read, but even my local coin dealer who sells coin detectors says he has never heard of anyone finding such items.
4) This book does not give a well-rounded view of the metal detecting hobby. Mr. Garrett only emphasizes the good and the sensational, making it sound like anyone can make a lot of money metal detecting coins. This is just not the case unless you make metal detecting your part-time job. To find the good coins, you will have to spend a great deal of time researching (which Mr. Garrett mentions) and even then, you will have to dig a lot of trash. You can spend three hours in a field and all you find is a button and a few current coins. Garret's book gives you the impression that gold coins are buried right in your backyard. This is simply not true. Avoid this book, as it is nothing more than an elaborate Garrett sales brochure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but promotes the Garrett brand...
This is a great book which got me started in metal detecting. It is extremely helpful, and will motivate treasure hunters by giving ideas on new places to hunt, it is also written very well and is easy to understand. The only drawback is that like most Garrett texts it promotes Charles Garrett's personal brand of metal detector

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner to the hobby of coin-shooting?
Beginner or experienced, you will love this book! The New Successful Coin Hunting is a modern version of Garrett's previous book "Successful Coin Hunting". The New version gives you ideas where to hunt, how to hunt, dig, clean, and even how to choose the right metal detector! It even has information on the newer computerized detectors. This is the book you want to take out on the 'field' with you when you hunt. Happy hunting! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MY FATHER WAS A SURVIVOR OF THE KNOX MINE DISASTER

4-0 out of 5 stars Great detail, excellent foot notes.
I saw this thing happen, and have amazed many people with the story of the Knox Mine Cave In. Having grown up in the Wilkes Barre area, and now living outside of that region,it's great to have a chronological sequence of the events that led to the demise of the deep anthracite mining industry. The book also captures the economic and political realities of the region in times prior to and after the mine disaster. Sheds a lot of light on "powerful" people. Definitely not a witch hunt - factual - lets the reader decide what caused the end of the deep coal mining in the Wyoming Valley ... Read more

Book Description

"Bucket of Blood" is what a coal town was called when bloodshed occurred to establish a worker's union. During the 1927-1928 strike in the western Pennsylvania coalfields, Russellton became known as such a place. In an effort to break the strike, special Coal and Iron Police were brought into the area to evict the mine families from their company houses. These men imposed unconstitutional restrictions to harass the people and keep out relief workers and organizers. It was a time of brutal beatings, rape, and murder.

Without union representation, the workers were constantly exploited. Because the company used many weapons to keep them enslaved, the miners' families were forced to live in abject poverty. The miner had only one weapon, the strike.

Bucket of Blood: The Ragman's War chronicles the depravation and indignities suffered by the families in the Russellton camps during the strike. Author R.S. Sukle explores the glimmers of hope appearing through relief efforts by the sons of a local farmer who become union activists.

Ragman, a mine mechanic, walks out with the other men. Against his intentions, he is drawn into the struggle by his brothers, and the abuse that is heaped on his family by the Coal and Iron Police.

The killing of a state Coal and Iron Policeman in Russellton is a local legend. The killer was never identified. This story has been passed down in certain families, each with their own version. Each claims the killer as a relative. Bucket of Blood is one of those stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Work of Respect
I am amazed at how lucky we are to live in today's world. Bucket of Blood gave me an understanding of the hardships families had to face during the miner's strike in Pennsylvania.I could actually feel the cold and pain that the families felt and the anger expressed toward the Coal & Iron police. This was a part of history I now understand helped me realize how lucky I am to live in the world as it is today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ragman's War a masterpiece
: Bucket of Blood: Ragman's War illustrates survival strategies in a family and in a desolate coal-mining community hidden in the hills of Russellton, Pennsylvania, in 1927.Initiative saves lives as two brothers, sometimes four, link skills and ideas to keep strikers from freezing or starving when coal mine and railroad owners unite to evict them from their company houses and beat them as a method of control of the mines.S. R. Sukle, in vivid dialogue, a dramatic story line and ndiscerning description, has caught a time in the mines and on the surrounding farms which tested endurance. The hardiness of the immigrant valley denizens, family love, and the necessity for union organizing permeate the novel.Particularly touching is the German mother who rises first in the pre-dawn to heat the kitchen and brew the coffee before her sons set out each day to save their fellows. Both humorous and poignant is the father who bunks in the barn with the animals during a flu epidemic.IUniverse has published an insightful chronicle of an experience of our forefathers and mothers that we in our comfortable, 21st century lives, can scarcely imagine.Reading Bucket of Blood: Ragman's War will help us imagine the triumphing stock from which many Americans came.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Illuminated
In Bucket of Blood, Sukle has written a fast-paced story of the turmoil and violence surrounding a 1927-1928 Miner's strike in Western Pennsylvania. In a well-written and entertaining fashion the story illuminates an important and nearly forgotten struggle in American history for Fair Wages and Fair Working Conditions.More importantly, Sukle illuminates the human heart and the strength of character shown by people in challenging conditions. The author's family history with the early union in the area gives this novel an authentic voice. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An astounding tome--(make it a searchable CD pease!)
This book is an astoundingly in-depth index of mineral occurances in Colorado. It has more than a few eye-opening revelations. Looking up the radioactive minerals is especially provacative. By bringing together so much information, the stupefying magnitude of efforts to find and identify minerals in Colorado can start to be appreciated.

The books organization should be explained: Individual mineral "chapters" are arranged aphabetically. Within each mineral chapter, occurances are listed aphabetically by county. This format makes looking for particular minerals fairly straightforward--it tells you which counties have the mineral and basically where to find them. As could be expected, publicly accessible occurances are described in more detail than private sites (mines are usually only named).

On the other hand, if you want to find out what minerals are found in particular county, only a short mineral highlights section at the beginning of the book is helpful. County information is parceled out to the individual mineral chapters. Regrouping the information by county would require another book--or a searchable CD.

This book begs to be in database-on-CD form. ... Read more

Book Description

Nowhere is the conflict between economic progress and environmental quality more apparent than in the mineral extraction industries. The latter half of the 20th century saw major advances in the reclamation technologies. However, mine water pollution problems have not been addressed. In many cases, polluted mine water long outlives the life of the mining operation. As the true cost of long-term water treatment responsibilities has become apparent, interest has grown in the technologies that would decrease the production of contaminated water and make its treatment less costly. This is the first book to address the mine water issue head-on. The authors explain the complexities of mine water pollution by reviewing the hydrogeological context of its formation, and provide an up-to-date presentation of prevention and treatment technologies. The book will be a valuable reference for all professionals who encounter polluted mine water on a regular or occasional basis. ... Read more
