Generally good
This is one of the more advanced general chem textbooks available. It has a review section at the beginning of the book for those who are not quite ready for college level chemistry. Unlike its two main competitors(Principles of Modern Chemistry by Oxtoby and Chemical Principles by Zumdahl), it introduces quantum chemistry (at very basic level) first. If you have hard time with this book, you might have to go down a level and find a text for regular science major general chemistry, for example, Brown/LeMay/Bursten or Moore/Stanitski/Jurs.

THE COLLOGE 1ST SEMESTER HONORS CHEM BOOK
I used this book for my 1st semester Honors Chemistry class at Cornell University (CHEM 215). Even though Chem is not my favorite science subject (I'm an electrical engineer, so I prefer physics instead) I have to say the combination of book and professor (Benjamin Widom), makes me remember that class as my favorite one during my first semester at Cornell. I wouldn't listen too much to the negative reviewer (Who wrote this book?). The book is not bad at all; it is just focused towards students who are going to be majoring on Chemistry (Pre-Meds). But that doesn't make it "bad". I do recognize that there are some typos in this edition that our professor easily corrected (that's why I gave it a 4 and not a 5).

Who wrote this book?
This is an overly complicated book appropriate for honors chemistry majors. Compared to other books in this category, it is not as easy to work with.

The biggest question has to be why Peter Atkins is even writing books in this category. He is a British physical chemist and everyone knows that British universities do not teach general chemistry. So, is this really a Loretta Jones book with Atkins name, because he is famous, or is Atkins crossing over?

UCLA's Primary Chemistry Text
This is the primary chemistry textbook for over 800+ students in UCLA with four different chemistry professors. Book is clear, concise, and very understandable. The fact that UCLA, with a pretty well known engineering school, would choose this text for their primary teachings proves that this book is great.

It made me feel stupid
How many chemistry textbooks begin with the beginning "You need insight to think like a chemist."? What is the definition of "insight?" So if I don't have their kind of "insight", I can't do chemistry? This book is slightly useful for teaching reactions, but does not particularly go out of the way to explain the fundamentals (quantum mechanics) required to understand these concepts. A Very Young Field
Is Nanotech just more hype? Blue sky research with no practical products in sight?

This book hopes to dispell that by presenting a solid survey of the field. It does require a fairly high technical level in the reader, concentrated in engineering. This may be a good sign. Things are not relegated to pure research. Indeed, several chapters discuss possible biotech and molecular electronics applications. Though you should be warned that these might be harder to build than expressed in the confident tone of some authors.

Some readers may see parallels to a description of the semiconductor industry circa 1955, when some devices had been built, but the full potential was only just being suspected. If so, perhaps all the more reason for you to go into nanotech, using this book as one of your guides. ... Read more

Very informative. Very much.
Being a second year, this book is a God-send. I should have gotten it last year. Now I really feel that I have insight into the things that I need to be a really competitive candidate. Whenever I asked my preceptors and mentors what I should do, I would receive really vague answers and was often told to not worry about doing research and all of the other things that everyone else was doing. I also feel that after reading the book, I have a much better understanding of the fellowships and residencies, as well as how to schedule my rotations for my third and fourth years.

Very comprehensive. Even has instructions on how you should pack when going for interviews. Compared to the high cost of a medical education, the money you pay for this great resource is a drop in the bucket with tremendous benefit. Really.

IMG, intern in FP residency
Being an IMG, I had to learn the completely different approach of getting into residency than that is in my country. Though not one book is ever going to tell you all the tiny details of that process, I have to admit that this book was my bible during the whole interview season. It's very good in revealing the mechanics, timelines, expectations and requirements as well as things like how to look for the interviews, what to tell and ask and what not to. It's better to buy and read early, since it helps to understand how to build solid resume which in turn takes some time to do. I bought it in August - right before interview season, and it still helped me a lot. I highly recommend it for everybody, especially for medical students, who are thinking about specialty choice - it gives statistics and insights into different specialties from different perspectives.

Thoughts from a 4th year, soon to be intern
Having just gone through the residency application/match process, I'd like to offer some of my thoughts on the keys to matching successfully with the residency program of your choice. At my medical school, we have a committee that is responsible for providing our students with the guidance needed to match successfully. This year, I had the opportunity to participate on the committee. The other members include several residency program directors, deans, and clerkship directors.

We all agreed that there are no books that can take the place of a good advisor. The right advisor can make all the difference in the world. However, few students would feel comfortable relying solely on an advisor and therefore, most students buy one or more books to help them. Iserson's Getting into a Residency is one such book our committee recommends. This is a book that is now in its sixth edition and has a lot of information essential to the residency application process. In our opinion, every student should buy this book on Day # 1 of medical school because it offers useful advice for years 1,2,3, and 4.

There are several other books that also deserve mention. One is First Aid for the Match by Vikas Bhushan, which is one of the books in the popular First Aid Series. Our committee did not find it as useful but its strengths are the CV and personal statement examples it provides. Another book that we recommend is The Residency Match: 101 Biggest Mistakes And How To Avoid Them by Samir Desai. This book is unlike the other two in that its focus is on the mistakes students make, which are not addressed in the other sources. This book was not available when I applied but had it been, it would have been very useful to me. I can recall making some of these mistakes and I can tell you that it's easy to fall into these traps.

practice tests help
This book has a lot of useful information in it, but I think the practice tests are the most valuable part. The one thing that was not in the practice tests was an ample supply of questions about descriptive chemistry, which were frequent when I took the actual test. Make sure you study descriptive chemistry. Even though I scored 750, below what I had hoped for, it is still a good book.

There are better choices
Barron's has a history of making bad test-prep books, though unarguably, REA is worse. I took the SAT II Biology last year, received an 800, but it was most certainly not the Barron's book that helped. The Barron's book was completely off key in giving difficult enough information, and falsely boosted my confidence in entering the actual test, which was much more difficult than the questions in the Barron's book. In contrast, for the SAT II Chemistry, some of the questions seem unreasonably abstruse and irrelevant (just like REA), providing information that does not help you for the test. Princeton Review has too much of a relaxed tone and misses out on some information as well, and Kaplan also has some unnecessary stuff like (Delta G = -RT ln Keq, some extra electrochemistry stuff), and doesn't have the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation etc. Though a mix of Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's ultimately works. You should definitely stay away from REA though--best to borrow these books from your local library than to buy them.

Goes beyond the SAT II Chemistry and AP!!
This review book was really good. I only had like a week to prepare for the test so I turned to this book as a last resort. It is better than some of the AP Chem books. I wished I had this book for AP Chem. It is so helpful. It goes over the major topics in detail and most importantly, reviews the labs, which are really stressed on the SAT II Chemistry. It's true what my teacher told me. After you take an AP class, you will forget everything. I did pretty poorly on the SAT II Chemistry. My fault for procrastinating. I get my scores back tomorrow. Simplifing A Complex Field Through A Consistent Approach
Having read the reviews thus far, I can't find anything I disagree with. It's the best technical text I've ever read. Many of the strengths have been mentioned already: intuitive approach, clear and concise, wide range of interesting illustrative examples, etc.

In addition, the consistent use and discussion of trajectories, phase space, stable points, etc. throughout the entire text allows the reader to incrementally build from each previous lesson. Though other books on nonlinear dynamics use these same tools, the vivid explanations and repetitions with incremental differences greatly enhanced the comprehensibility of these topics. I especially appreciate these consistent methods applied to the consolidation of the material in this text after reading books and papers from various authors using different jargon and methods of illustrating the same concepts.

Perfect introduction to Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos
If you have read about Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics and you wish to delve deeper into the mathematics behind the theories then this is the book for you. Strogatz is an excellent writer with an uncanny ability to make advanced concepts seem amazingly simple. The exercises and examples make this book perfect for the motivated self-learner. I must warn you however that you had better be at least somewhat familiar with ODE before you dive into this text. I strongly recommend this book!

Chaos on a plate
Strogatz's approach to Nonlinear Dynamics is suitable for anyone equipped with a good basic understanding of ordinary differential equations. He allows the reader to gradually build-up their understanding through a series of illustrations and examples - this is the sort of book that will be indispensable the night before a final year undergraduate Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics exam. Not excessively mathematical, contains solid explanations and encourages the reader to learn more about this fantastic area of physics.

Great book but...
This is a great book - clear explanations, lots of examples and exercises and helpful references and index. However, answers to selected exercises is really annoying - when will publishers insist on a full set of solutions?

Having programs to plot the figures in the book would have helped in understanding the material. If you want Mathematica programs - see Wolframs "The Mathematica Book". For Maple and MATLAB programs, see Lynch's Dynamical Systems books.

Excellent book!
I used the first edition in 1989 as a general chemistry student. The book was easy to follow and well written. Later as a school teacher, I used the book teaching my ap students. The problems are challenging, incorporating many techniques and problem solving skills. Now, as a chemical engineer, I still use it as a reference guide.

A Thorough Yet Approachable Introduction to Chemistry
This text distinguishes itself from similar books through its clear prose, many examples, wonderful graphics, and plentiful problems, which span the range of skill from simple to challenging.

Contrary to some previous reviewers, I am not interested in the type of suits the author wears, and I have found the examples and problems to reinforce the text and help form a clear and concise presentation. Knowing that some students will not have access to the even-numbered solutions, the author has structured the problems so that the odd-numbered problems thoroughly cover the material. Moreover, the Complete Solutions Manual is available through several online textbook retailers.

I highly recommend this text for anyone looking for a strong presentation of chemistry fundamentals.

Great for AP Chem
I used this book in my high school, junior year AP Chemistry class and I felt I learned a ton. I think it was extremely easy to read, yet time consuming. It will require a lot of effort, but I think the end results are worth it.

OK text
This is a textbook for college-level general chemistry, not introductory organic chemistry. It provides concise, generally clear explanations of basic chemical concepts. College-level chemistry is a difficult course for many college students today in large part due to their poor preparedness to study at college level. Many are struggling with simple algebra many 7th grade students in other countries would have no difficuly with. They also have trouble understand any books written above 8th grade readability level. Even thought this is not a perfect textbook, it is not an excuse for failures of many students in college chemistry. No textbook will do them any good unless they are more perpared to take chemistry by strengthening their math, English by taking remedy courses, and by improving their study habits. For a slightly better text, check out the text by Moore, Stanitski, and Jurs might be considered. If you are struggling, you might want to get a copy of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry by Guch or Survival Guide for General Chemistry by Atwood.

In college, professors expect students to learn on their own, so the students basically rely on their books. Great source for writers....
The Mayo Clinic Family Health Book is like having six resource books in one. Information from Mayo is reliable, easy-to-understand and reviewed by some of the most respected physicians in the world.

Each disease mentioned contains information about key signs and symptoms, a basic description of the disease, illustrations, how the disease is diagnosed, potential consequences, information on treatment, and information on prevention.

The comprehensive index in the third edition is easy to use. For example, information on "scoliosis" can be found on pages 235, 603, 774, 980, and 981. (Page 980 features an illustration.)

There is also a complete listing of resources for more information including addresses, phone numbers and Web sites. I particularly like the section on symptoms. You can just look up a symptom such as "back pain" and learn more about conditions that cause back pain. The book then directs you to the page containing detailed information about that condition.

I'm looking forward to what I hope will be the interactive DVD version of the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book in the future.

Mayo Clinic Family Health Book
What an amazing source of information!! It is a definate must have for new parents. This detailed, yet easy to understand book offers specific chapters by age including newborns. It give prevenative information on health & safety including tooth care, controlling stress and travelng abroad. Of course first aid and diseases and disorders are the bulk of the book. It is well written easy to use and include helpful illustrations and photos. Every household should have one, but certainly families with children, of any age should have this book to refer to.

A HUGE source of information!
Having been to Mayo Rochester, I was thrilled to get this book. It is MASSIVE. There is so much good info in here it's hard to know where to start. There are detailed illustrations of all of the body's systems, pictures of various skin disorders, instructions on how to deal with all types of illnesses and symptoms, info on healthy eating and diet, and info on various drugs used to treat a myriad of ailments. This book should be in EVERY home.

Great Book
This is a short-hand, easy to reference version of the full sized Rosen's. It is incredibly useful and easy to use. Great for use in the ED while on a shift or for reading quickly on a subject that you want to learn more about.

Best if used in the ED
Treatment and diagnostic suggestions are catered for a fully-equipped ED. Less useful in an urgent care or similar environment. Otherwise an excellent resource.

Very helpful
The more I use this dictionary, the more I come to like it. It's handy to have a specific dictionary for scientific and technical terms, and I feel more complete with this by my side. The coverage is comprehensive, the layout is clean and easy to read, and the added illustrations are a nice touch.

I would also recommend the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science & Technology as a nice supplement.

FAMOUS FOR ITS BROAD-SPECTRUM COVERAGE
The "McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms" is famous for its broad-spectrum coverage. Its soul is general science; and its audience is anybody who has any business with any science: biological, chemical, or physical. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or even a consultant, this unabridged lexicon lets you discover scientific terms, methods and applications in a very simple way. It is overflowing with references and definitions.

The dictionary, as I expected, is excellent. I can easily and directly grasp the clear concept of meanings without imaging in my mother tongue, Japanese. Each explanation with the technical field is very concise and accurate. I believe that the dictionary helps me to perfectly understand the target words, for translating from English to Japanese, equivalent to those of an educated English speaker. Then, this will automatically make my task much easier.
Hopefully, I will also be able to obtain CD-ROM, which can be installed in my computer, Windows ME/MS-Word, for accelerating my job.

The Highest Quality Information
As a medical technician who helps advise patients with nutritional problems, I have read nearly every major dietary supplement guide that has been published in the last decade. This PDR is, by far, the best such guide I have found. The doctors I work with are equally enthusiastic about its in-depth analysis, full citations to the supporting literature and its refreshing objectivity. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that nutritional supplements have been accorded the same in-depth treatment given, in other guides, to prescription drugs. This book should be "must" reading for every doctor, dietician, pharmacist and for every lay person who wishes to intelligently share in the management of his/her own health. There has never been a resource like this before.

For those interested in herbal medicine, there is a separate PDR dealing with herbs; although I do not find the herbal PDR as useful as The PDR for Nutritional Supplements, which covers all the other nutritional/dietary supplements, as well as some of the active constituents of popular herbs, the herbal book is also better than most. Initially I wondered why Medical Economics, the highly respected publisher of the PDR series of books, did not combine the herbs with the other dietary supplements and cover all of them in one reference book. An editor at Medical Economics told me that had they done so they would have had to sacrifice much of the in-depth treatment they have provided--far in excess, as I have previously noted, of anything available in any of the other books--in order to squeeze all of the supplements discussed into one marketable tome. We can all be thankful that they did not do this. Both books are indispensable, as is every word in them.

Brim Full of Information
Tired of getting your supplement information from the vitamin shop clerk? This is state of the art stuff. Finally here is a book that both the lay person and the physician can safely turn to. The author has no axe to grind. He neither overstates nor understates, but is carefully objective in his presentation and allows the evidence to speak for itself. Dr. Hendler brings to his subject an open mind, wide ranging intelligence, and a rigorous training in all of the relevant disciplines. He refuses to be a shill either for entrenched medical orthodoxy or starry eyed alternative approaches. The result is a cornucopia of information.

A Critical Resource to Control Your Life Through Health Care
The PDR for Nutritional Supplements is the most well organized and substantive publication that I have ever used in over twenty years as a supplement consumer and one of the best literary purchases that I have ever made.

While other publications may purport to be "encyclopedic," they fall short of the mark in paying attention to detail. Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a critical and necessary resource for anyone using nutritional supplements, functional foods and or herbs. The knowledge imparted here will allow you to take control of your life as it relates to health care and maintenance.

great book
This book is fantastic. Finally a scientific approach to the complex and often confusing information about supplements. Dr. Hendler makes no unfounded statements and he provides unbiased and objective facts understandable to both the lay person and physician. He even shows us the molecular structures of the supplements. This is a great work by one of the long time leaders in the field.

PDR for nutritional supplements
Don't waste your money on this book. Unlike the regular PDR's it does not contain much information, and when looking for herbal remedies that your patients are using, most of them are NOT in here. The supplement name index is only nine pages (most books are at least fifteen to twenty). On the positive side, it does mention the actual studies used for reference under each heading in the article with specific details of the studies and I did find "Bee Pollen," which I could not find in the other books I had. Two cheaper and more helpful books are the "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements," by Michael T. Murray, N.D. and "The New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, and Herbs," by Nicola Reavley. These are both well-referenced to medical journals and will also discuss risks and benefits of the remedy (you will need to look for the names of the articles in the reference section, listed by footnote number). When comparing drugs in the PDR to the other two books, much of the information is the same. In addition, these other two books can be used to look up a condition and find a remedy for it. These Aren't Flash Cards
I just received these. They're not flash cards. A flash card has a question (images, etc) on one side and answer(s) on the other. These cards just have info on both sides. They're review cards, not flash cards.

Great for massage student or undergrad A and P
These cards make learning anatomy and physiology a lot easier. Sometimes you don't have the time to read big textbooks. However, I would recommend these study cards as a great source for learning the human body for massage students or college A and P students. I am a massage student and found these cards to be a very valuable source in helping me get very good grades. I also used, which is also on amazon.com:

The author of these study guides seems to know the type of questions asked on my massage school anatomy and physiology tests. I have a few friends who also used these study guides for undergrad anatomy and physiology and found them to be quite helpful. I recommend getting all three books.

Love, love, love this book
This is an excellent care plan book. It takes you through the possible goals, interventions, and rationales for each diagnosis and even gives suggestions for assessment data to collect. It also has a small appendix with nursing diagnoses by illness. Every illness is not listed in this section, but a lot are.

A Must Have for Nursing Students

Makes learning med terminology easy
This book makes learning medical terminology very easy. At first I was skeptical of the "programmed learning" approach - it seemed much too repetitive and grade school-ish. However, I found that as I finished each chapter in the workbook, I retained the majority of the information. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the basics of medical terminology without putting forth a great deal of effort. I found the workbook to be fun, and the CD, which includes sample quizzes and learning activities, was extremely helpful.

Anyone can learn medical terminology with this book.
