The best modern Organic Chemistry text I have come across!
This is undoubtedly the best modern book for learning Organic Chemistry. It simply cannot be compared with any of the traditional texts like Morrison and Boyd, because it presents Organic Chemical research as a cutting edge science of the present and future. Since it was first published in 2001, in this book you will find accounts of reactions and reagents that you will simply not find in any similar text. From Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira couplings to very important new reactions like Grubbs' olefin metathesis, it covers the whole gamut of current organic chemistry. The most important and fascinating aspect of the book is the almost countless examples of modern drugs, pesticides and other molecules that are presented to illustrate the reactions. In this, for example, one can find the example of how the simple concept of pKa of acids was used in the synthesis of Ranitidine, the best selling drug of today. Or a separate interesting chapter on Sulfur chemistry and Asymmetric Synthesis as applied to important problems in Biology and Medicine.
In fact, the whole approach is very much bioorganic as well as highly practical. From this book, we learn how organic chemistry is used in a highly exciting manner by real life chemists solving real life problems. It truly conveys the excitement in organic chemistry as practiced today. I believe that if you can thoroughly grasp the principles in this book, you are probably comparable to the best organic chemistry graduate in the world. The informal and honest style of the authors is almost too good to believe. Boxed material which contains key points and the colour used in the book make it a very attractive one. The book is a source of an incredible amount of information. The authors must have really spent a lot of efforts in writing it. Truly a book for the 21st century.
A book which is an absolute must on the shelves of practicing chemists and students alike.

the best undergrad text in organic chemistry available
I bought this book on the suggestion of one of the reviewers to get an overview of fundamentals of Organic Chemistry in my way to clear cumulative examinations.I'm in total agreement with the previous reviewers.I went through many of the undergrad texts in organic and I'm certain that this is the best among available.This is really a 21st cetury organic text.The approach adopted is very personal(as if the authors were directly talking to you).The language used was piquant.This book is a bonanza of information.The good things about this book are they used pKa values to predict the rates of different reactions and they widely used the MOT to interpret the reaction mechanism and stereochemistry in many reactions.They made the embittered subject caviar to the general. Students who have read this book can't be overwhelmed by the mind boggling mechanisms their professors write. I would also like to suggest Norman & Coxon's "Principles of Organic Synthesis"(published by nelsonthornes)for a comprehensive coverage of synthesis stuff.That's a reader friendly text and gives you the logic of synthesis(unlike the Carey's book that presents all the reactions sequentially which are often not rationalized)

One of the best Organic chemistry textbooks
This is an exceptionally good book of organic chemistry. The detailled mechanistic of different substitution reactions has no equivalent in other textbooks. The quantitative use of pKa values to explain reactivity and the good discussion of Hammett relationships makes it also excellent. The book is specially good for biological or pharmaceutical oriented students. They will found plenty of examples why their work is relevant.
As the authors clearly stated, it could not be directly used in a sophomore american course. However, it would be very good as a reference and for advanced organic chemistry courses.

Great intermediate organic chemistry textbook
This book is very good for the students who already have the intro organic chem. I actually bought this book to review the material for my organic synthesis final exam and I am very satisfied. The book covers the reactions and machanisms that are very up-to-date. A lot of them cannot be found in typical intro, American orgo textbook, but they are essential in total synthesis these days. Some of these are Mitsunobu reaction, Heck reaction, Stille coupling, Dieckeman rearrangement, etc. I think the book will also fit the grad student who are seeking to review basic material for cumulative exam, though one should also consult more advance books like March's or Carey's advanced orgo chem all along in this case. I actually found the book rather synthesis-oriented, but it does give enough explanation in terms of molecular orbitals to understand why reactions occur in certain way. However, one should also be aware that the explanations may be quite basic and might not satisfy the hardcore physical organic chemist, but again, quite sufficient for synthetic chemist. I really like the authors' style because they do not only tell you reaction in great details, but they also give you its utility in real world of organic synthesis. They also make extensive connections between chapters and help the reader to understand the big picture.

If you are seeking the intro orgo chem textbook, I think this one may very well be applicable, but be prepared to wrok hard on it because there are a lot more materials than typical intro orgo book and extensive connections between chapters. But for sure, one will gain rigorous foundation for more advanced class like organic synthesis. ... Read more

A good self-study course, if you're interested
I am the reader from Montezuma, NM, and after taking a few more chemistry courses and re-reading the outline, I feel that I should add a few observations to my enthusiastic review from above, which I wrote over 3 years ago.

I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of college chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in general chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.

The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and even fewer will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.

For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students, especially if you are reviewing years of material such as I did for my IB exam. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.

Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.

For help with grades, I suggest you try the Scham's "How to Study" guide and follow their suggestions.

An Excellent Study Aid
This book is concise and complete. The reviews are great, and the problems aren't just busywork--they actually will help you understand the material. For the higher level International Baccalaureate chemistry exam, I have had to review 2 years worth of general chemistry, and this book has helped me immensely.

new kind of textbook
This text covers basic chemical principles in the context of important molecules. It does not spoonfeed students chemical "knowledge." Rather, it encourages students to "discover" knowledge with their peers by participating learning activities. Students who have no desire of understanding chemistry might be better off with a more traditional text so that they can "get by" with a "D" in chemistry and forget about it. A great book!!
This is a great resource for anyone wishing to learn basic chemistry or for anyone wishing to brush up on long forgotten basics. It explains challenging concepts using simple terms which can be understood by most people. I am very impressed with the author's teaching style.

Good book, but only for fundamental chemistry.
I am in a chemistry class this year and I am using a book titled "Chemistry" by Raymond Chang. I decided to buy this book as a reference as my textbook has trouble explaining some of the concepts and problems. When I received this book, I noticed that it only covered up to about chapter 8 in my 32 chapter textbook. Although it only explains the fundamentals of chemistry, this book does do a good job explaining those parts.

Try It!
This book was very helpful. I found that this book is more detailed than the 900 page, $160 textbook I bought for the class.

I finally understand chemistry
I needed to get caught up quick for my chem class, and I was extremely rusty because my last class was years ago. This book has been an excellent help. The workbook format is really effective, as I learn when I do things and write them down. The author is an excellent teacher, and breaks everything down into simple, easy-to-understand terms. The self-check sections are nice too, as I can see if I really understood the lesson plan.

Long story short, I am really learning these fundamentals, and it is helping me with the more complex concepts in my class. I am extremely satisfied with this book.

Chemistry - no problem!
I bought the self-teach book 'Chemistry Concepts & Problems' to help with my preparations for a medical entry exam and it is great! It is filled with questions, questions, questions & more questions (and answers of course!) and is a great overview of Chemistry up to grade 12/first year university. It is very easy to understand and learn from.

My only complaint is that immediately under each question is the answer, so you've seen the answer before you can even think about it! Why not put the answers at the back of the book like every other textbook? (This is why I deducted a star). [There are some 'self-tests' which don't have the answers immediately after the question, but I would have preferred no answers until the end, all the way through the book].

This aside, I have, and continue to learn a lot with it.
If you are looking for an easy to understand chemistry textbook as a refresher or to compliment your current chemistry course - go ahead - it's worth the money. ... Read more

Truly Awesome!

waaayyyy too wordy
I found this book too wordy. There was a lack of pictures, charts, and diagrams to help explain what they were trying to say in words. Instead of showing a picture of what the lewis dot structure of a compound looks like, the book tries to explain in words where the single, double, triple bonds are, and the arrangement of the different atoms.

Anesthesia Secrets
I have used this book, periodically, since my CA-1 year, and I find the material to be useful as an adjunct, or supplementation, in my studies for my anesthesiology boards.

You should not use this book alone to learn the art and science of anesthesiology, as the discipline requires a voluminous amount of study to be a safe and competent practitioner. This book, however, is good for it's intended use by the Author, James Duke, MD, University of Colorado, by taking a large amount of knowledge and making it digestable for practical scenarios.

Solid references and bibliographies make this a reliable resource.

Excellent Summary of Most Important topics in Anesthesia
I owned the first edition of this book during medical school while taking a rotation in Anesthesiology, and it was an INVALUABLE aid! I could find many answers to questions I was "pimped" on during the rotation, which were hard or impossible to find in the standard large text books. I highly recommend it to anyone doing a rotation in, planning on going into, or working in and around Anesthesiologists! An absolutely wonderful book, buy it!

Fantastic Book
I have to differ from earlier negative reviews: this is a great book. It is clearly written, lavishly illustrated, and the CD is outstanding. The authors have put great effort into this book. They take it upon themselves to lead the student in many ways that make learning more effective. They cross-reference topics from earlier chapters that I as the student may have forgotten. They illustrate topics to make them tangible. They provide both theoretical and practical context for most topics. They created an exhaustive CD with great tools and movies and aids to learning. I may have a different perspective than some because I am a returning student and am familiar with some of the material. But unlike other textbooks I am also reviewing, this one feels complete instead of feeling that the author didn't quite complete a topic and expects me to go hunting for answers. I (obviously) recommend this book heartily, and I am not connected with any of the authors!

Did anyone even edit this book????
I have never been this disappointed with a text book since I started my education. This is coming from someone who was originally excited to take Chemistry. It was poorly written and organized, to the point that information you needed to solve examples were in later sections instead of the section you were studying. And worse of all - I have never seen a textbook with so many typographical errors - anywhere from misspelled words, to wrong solutions in the back of the book (my instructor and I went through the problems in which I thought were incorrect - and yes they really were incorrect in the book) to inconsistency in the chemicals they used in the problem. How could this book have even been released in this condition? I am also writing a letter to the publisher of this book.

Poorly written
This book is very poorly written and has a excessive typos and errors, especially in the answer section in the back - it's come to the point where if I get a different answer from the back of the book I usually assume it is the author who is wrong. It explains the concepts poorly, often over complicating them or leaving out vital pieces of information, or telling you about them a page after you really needed the information. It is not organized logically - we've ended up jumping around to different chapters to make it flow logically. Overall I'm not satisfied with this book on any level - I would have fired the person giving the go-ahead to print and distribute it if I'd been the publisher.

A very disappointing approach to Chemistry
Kotz's Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity is a very disappointing textbooks. As a student using this textbook, I found myself highly confused due to the poor explinations as well as well as how unorganized the format of the book is. If it was not for the fact that I had taken Chemistry earlier I would not have understood half of the material that was taught to me by the book. I am highly disappointed in the textbook.

It is a very good book
~For the first time I took the online class, chemistry, and we use this book as text book. It turns out that it is totally self-study. I have found this book is very well written and easy to follow. Basically I can understand everything after reading each chapter just once without any help from the instructor.
The book comes with 2 CDs. I used it very rarely. I don't think they are that helpful or informative.
You also can access this book companion site from the publisher website. It provides~~ two quizs per chapter. You can take it on-line. If you miss the question, it will tell you which part of text in the book you need to review/pay more attention. The quiz site is more useful than the CD.~ ... Read more

Concise, affordable reference
The Merck Manual's new edition is a much needed update to previous editions. The book follows the same, easy to follow formal and includes sections on exotic animals that were not a part of previous editions. It is a very affordable although fairly comprehensive reference to general veterinary medicine.

Some veterinary students have found this a very useful book for reviewing while studying for National Boards.

The book's main flaw is that references are poorly cited, and for the most part, are non-existent.

Great Bathroom Reading For The Layman
Want to know what to feed your sheep? Or your lizard? Want to know why your cow has the sniffles? This book has it!

I have an old dogeared (heh) copy of the people book these folks put out. I decided to pick up the veterinary manual after acquiring a rabbit. (I was using the people book to look up feline ailments, which mapped extremely well to the entries in the people book. The rabbit is a little space alien, as far as that goes.) I sat down with some crackers and a cup of coffee and had a blast riffling through the book and pondering over such delightful words are ruminants and ungulates.

I felt the book was not the most intuitively organized book I've ever seen, but it's a great reference manual (once you get the hang of it) and is fun to flip through if the only animals you have ever dealt with have been cats and dogs.

One big problem is that I will go along reading something and have no idea what species I am reading about. I'm a little concerned about what I am going to do in an emergency. "Now is that a lagomorph problem? Oh wait. It's talking about the patient's trunk! Or is that a uvula?"

So, I liked it, but not as much as, say "The Book of the Cat". The rabbit did not (he bit it and shoved it onto the floor) and the cats want to own it (they rubbed their chins on it.)

Its a great peek into the lives of farmers and zookeepers at any rate. I wonder how veterinarians feel about it?

If only i could purchase MVM when I was student...
Very useful book. Exposition language very easy. Altough my english isn't good, I understand and MVM help to me.

Invaluable if you know what you are talking about
This is a great book. If you already know alot, then you will be all set. I've only been an assistant for 2years, and reading this is difficult, if I didn't have a vet dictionary I would be lost. If you are well trained then I see this as a wonderful book to have, maybe invaluable.

Great referencing!
As a veterinary technician who graduated in '94 and is out of the clinics, but still works in Animal care, it is the best. I refer back to it all the time. I don't remember everything I was taught and especially being away from practices, it is perfect. It has EVERYTHING!! I carry it with me, it is like my bible! I love, love, love this book and CD!!!
Before this book I always had a hard time with Neuro. I just got by when I took the class and I did below average on the subject on step one. Before I took a rotation in Neuro I read this book and it changed everything for me. Now I love to get neuro questions and I'm much more secure about patients with neuro presentations. Although it does not provide the detail as you would get from a comprehensive book, it makes the basics and the most common problems very clear. The CD is helpful and fun! It should be used along with the book; not just at the end. The CD has many pictures (gross and drawings) that help to visualize the neuro layout of the CNS. The great thing about this book is that you can read and understand it in a couple days if you're motivated.

Great book
Goldberg just hit a home run with this book and anatomy made ridic simple. Neuro combined with the high yield fix book complement each other so well. Together they should be your primary board review. They are also great to read for you med school course also. Beautiful books

Superficial explanations, too small in size, disorganized.
Well the thing about this book is that it really is not organized very well. So if you think that you're going to feel like your reading microbiology MRS book and getting that feeling like your really learning easily from it forget it. That is what I thought.
They book can get you frustrated at many pages and areas as you're reading it because it only explains crucial stuff superficially. I really liked the CD that came with it tho.
Although over simplistic; but builds up your confidence; so I really use the CD, I liked the CD even more then the book itself; you should read the book first to get the most out of the CD that comes with it. You need a nice atlas of neuroanatomy when reading this book....
Once you get to the end of this book and use the CD you feel better about it, you're feeling a little better by then but it's so weird the side of the book its so small does not give you enough room to add notes to it. The drawings are too small and not really enough to be considered good for the reader; you really get a little lost easily here and there when trying to follow the stuff that it tells you to look at in the text.
The pictures that it tells you to follow are misplaced in the pages...
They could be better positioned.
And also it does not explain stuff very well I mean if he just stretched out more when he's already explaining something it would be great, like when he talked about the brown sequad syndrome I had to read it elsewhere because I did not get the picture from reading his book alone of what that was.
Although the author tries to convey the message in an easy way, that makes it undemanding for you to understand it, the disorganization and the lack of explanations on some areas don't make this book thorough...
That's why the FA book rates it as a B book and not as an A book like it does for HY neuroanatomy.
I prefer this book's format tho then HY neuroanatomy but the quality of this book in several aspects could be so much improved.
The author should for his 4th edition pay a little more attention to the overall shape of the book and break down all the stuff that he's trying to explain; like really talk to the students; don't mind it's size that it might get to be, the important thing should be that then you can easily follow a very hard subject, such as neuroanatomy. In order to make its ratings go up, the size of the book should increase in size.
It will make it easier for us to follow and add notes, y?know graphs and all?
Meaning that this book has some flaws right that could be fixed very easily, overall you need a really nice neuroanatomy atlas to get the most out of this book.
It really stresses you out trying to read through those small letterings and the small drawings and so forth and so on.
It's already got its way cutout for to being an A+ rated book...
Just needs a little more shaping in place especially with the length of its explanations too and the size of the book which I think should be about the size of the same book from the series microbiology made ridiculously simple for in that way it would be easier to look at the hand made drawings plus the fact that we could add notes to it.

This is the FIRST and ONLY place to start studying neuro!
As a medical student, I suggest that this is the first place you go to learn about neuroanatomy. It gives you the basics and builds a foundation that you can build on. After a few hours with this book, I was weeks ahead of my classmates!

It's a kind of magic
I'm a emergency physician. In my junior residency,i had a hard time approaching the neurology patients, so needed neuroscience knowledge urgently. However most books i had met were tomes and time-consuming for me, also i had to get more back of neuroanatomy for understanding big books. Accidentally i started this book. it's took only three days even in busy resident period. OH!!! It's a magical experience. This book prevented me from being burned out and saved my day and also gave me self-confidence on the neurology. Facilitation course members love this book
I teach a master's level course in facilitation and team dynamics. Justice and Jamieson is by far the most useful and popular book in that course. Students use it heavily in designing facilitation processes during the course, and I hear them recommending to others that they KEEP their J&J handy because they'll continue to use it. Especially helpful: the quick overviews of group dynamics, overt/covert issues, team member roles, leadership processes. It helps to provide this background knowledge for the students. The options and explanations list many more choices and rationales than usually seen in a book like this. Examples: multiple approaches to brainstorming, agenda development, session evaluation, interventions to manage conflict, etc. J&J's second edition (if there is one) could be a little slicker, but you wouldn't have to change much content except perhaps to have an added section on virtual facilitation. Enjoy!

covers it all
Most comprehensive book on the topic I've seen. Very practical info. I interned with a small consulting firm that did excellent facilitation work, but their only training strategy for facilitation was "watch what I do and then do it" -- no real framework for a beginner. I wish I had known about this book; it put it all into logical structure and process, and allowed me to make sense of what I had seen a few times as a beginner. I've used its many practical checklists to become a respected facilitator, and still improving thanks to this manual.

Great Resource
This books is a "manual" on facilitation that prepares you very quickly. Great examples, good checklists, good index - well worth the price. My only quibble is a small one: charge a few dollars more and improve the paper and printing quality.

Best "how to" book on facilitation with groups and teams.
This book is an encyclopedia of practical guides and scripts for all levels of facilitators. I was able to immediately implement the carefully scripted process techniques in my University teaching and consulting work with other organizations.
