Don't Waste Your Money!
I purchased the new 2004 Winland-Brown review book and CD. Not only were there many errors in the numbering of the questions AND the numbering of the answers, but the questions are not written at an entry level practitioner's knowledge level. The questions seemed out in left field and were much more difficult than other books that I have reviewed. There were several discrepancies from the Fitzgerald review CDs (2004. When I looked up the information, Fitzerald seems to be correct, not Winland-Brown. There was conflicting information in regards to fetal movement counts and prostatitis, and in other areas that I can't recall at this time. Don't waste your money. I recommend Fitzgerald's review course/CDs and book!

Thorough but discouraging
I obtained a copy of the book from a former classmate. The sections are divided to focus on specific areas of need. The volume of practice questions in text and disk is great, BUT, I found most questions far more difficult than what was on the actual exam (in my case, I took the AANP version today). The practice questions may be very discouraging to some as I found it to be, however, try to remember that the exam may not be as indepth. Do take a review course or order review cassette tapes. I recommend the Advance Practice Education Associates (APEA) review by Amelie Hollier who is a likable, encouraging, excellent speaker who tells you what you need to know with memorable stories. Note: I am not affiliated with the company nor am I being coerced to sharing this. The Fitzgerald review course does not cover many conditions but what it does cover may be more indepth than is necessary for the exam. Good Luck to ALL!

Not worth it!
Skip this one! Out of date questions with a lot of "All of the aboue" options that are NOT on the test. The practice disk is a waste as well. I found that questions were repeated frequently. Now I can't even open the disk- it keeps saying there is a file error.

Try Kidd & Robinson's or Fitzgerald's FNP certification reviews instead.

This is the one to buy.
Used this book and can say that the disk was extremely helpful in terms of practicing for an online exam. If you are limited on time, and can't do a whole lot of review, just doing the disk review is a good place to start. Wish I had purchased this while in school, at the start, rather than waiting. Bottom line, I found this book to be very helpful in preparing for the FNP exam and I passed. So, it worked for me!

Mediocre
I bought this review mostly for the computer practice disk that came with the study guide. Before my FNP exam I would have rated this book a 4-5 star but now that I have taken the exam I rate it more poorly. The study guide questions offer a lot of "all of the above" for an answer choices but the exam did not have a single one. Also the guide had a lot of questions regarding percentages and again there were none on my exam. This software is unusable on mac's and unix systems.
I bought this software hoping that it would help me to find required mathematical formulas faster. At home on my powermac (OSX.1, OS9.2) I only see messed up windows. Furthermore, the formulas are unreadable, using an archaic font. Trying to save the day, I went to my linux machine at work reading "Your operating system, Linux 2.2.19-7.0.1, is not supported by this software. It appears that the software is only suitable for some SUN and SGI machines. It only appears to run properly on a windows machine. From an editor, who I remember, is one of the few persons finding errors in Knuth's TeX system, I expected much better.

A fun book
I bought Gradshteyn & Ryzhik because I had to write an answer to some homework problem in some physics class that I took. The problem had contorted itself into a perverse elliptic integral and its recovery was beyond my means, so I went to the bookstore, looked for something fat and Soviet, and found this gem. I forked over the cash for it, figuring that it was a long-term investment.

I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up.

The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R.

After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye.

Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it.

After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it.

I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version?

G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined).

For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it.

Daunting at first but worth it.
Before it was much use, I had to read the section as to how the book is organized. As the other reviewers state the integrals are comprehensive and as far as I have used correct. The integrals are very useful, but this book includes many other features that I have found helpful as a graduate student. The sections on Hermite and Legendre polynomials are especially helpful for students of Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical physics (you won't have to hunt in several books to find what you need). The included identities for hyperbolic and trig functions are very helpful simplifying homework answers, mostly because of their comprehensive nature. This book is great because it seems to have everything and most people will not need to buy another table. The binding is good also, so it should last many years with normal care. This is a very good investment.

Gigantic, but well organized and highly accurate
Gradshteyn and Ryzhik is to the CRC Mathematical Tables as the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary is to Webster's Collegiate. Besides being big, it's easy to find things in, because of the way the integrals are organized into classes. Like any other integral tables, you'll probably have to make a change of variables or two to get your problem into a standard form, but since the classes are well covered, you have a big target to shoot for, so your chances of finding your integral tabulated are excellent.

An unscientific sampling indicates that this book has remarkably few errors. It really helped me through grad school.

Excellent review
I benefited from the practice questions and exams. Excellent resource. It offers a good review of common problems/clinical issues with review questions following each topic. The CD-rom is useful, too, and worked perfectly for me. It contains three practice exams with 175-207 questions. I was scoring around 72% on the practice exams and passed the AANP exam yesterday! I would definitely recommend it.

CD is flawed- Mosby will send you a new one
Mosby did discover that the CD is flawed somehow but they will send you a new one at no charge. Don't let the issue of the CD influence you in terms of the book. It is a great review book. There are lots of test questions- more than most other review books, along with rationale. Worked for me!!
I enjoyed how the sections were separated by body system. It made it quite easy to study. Also, the review tests were likewise separated making it easier to diagnose my areas of weakness and my areas of strenght. This allowed me to focus more of my time on my weaknesses and not waste it on things I already knew. The two full-length tests were a good practice for the real thing. Best of all I PASSED!!

The CD ROM is AWFUL!
If you are looking for a book with CD ROM to practice test questions on the computer...DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! The answers are incorrectly programmed so even though the rationales make sense, it is graded entirely wrong. Ditto what the other reviewers has to say about this major flaw...

CD is very flawed!
DON'T BUY FOR THE CD-ROM! The rationales do not match up with the correct answer. On the practice test on the CD I got a score of 38, but when I went through the rationales it had marked the ones I had right (according to the rationale) wrong and vice versa. (I actually had a 82). There is no rhyme or reason to this flaw! I bought this b/c I wanted to practice with computerized questions, esp. since the test is computerized! The ANCC book is good but $$(NursingMall.org). An Absolute Essential for Chemists!
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals. Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is. This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques. One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween. Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.) An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.

Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist
This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section). This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number of common solvents and reagents. I don't know how any chemist can survive without having this on his/her bookshelf!

Great for the Organic Chemist
Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist. It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or the drying/purification of solvents. The protocols for purification are usually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and can be carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to giving the pure, pure substance.

Excellent for the research organic chemistry graduate student or the pharmaceutical industrial research chemist who likes to start with the purest materials, so as to leave only the investigative variables open to question.

However, in industry, although FedEx-ing new and pure reagents (and disposal of the old questionable ones!) is the easiest and encouraged method for research, it is often found that purification is totally appropriate--in these instances, Purification of Laboratory Chemicals (D.D. Perrin & W.L.F. Armarego) is highly recommended. ... Read more

Concise and easy to read!
I am starting medical school in the fall and after being out of school for a year, I wanted to brush up on my basic biochemistry knowledge. This book allows for concise review without having to dig through a huge text. It highlights the important points in a well organized manner. I suppliment when needed with my old biochemistry text, but haven't even needed to do that much. It is a must for anyone needing a good outline of important biochemistry topics in a clear format.

The Most Comprehensive Review Book
When I started to study this book I did not have any idea of biochemistry at all. It was almost 8 years after I had taken the course in medical school and honestly I barely passed it. This book gave me all I needed and actually thought me biochemistry from the basics to the top. I have never seen a review book more complete and flawless than this book. The only issue is, the book is lengthy and needs a lot of time to read and these days biochemistry does not show up in USMLE Step 1 very often.

Must have for biochemistry
This book was excellent for my biochemistry class and for board studying. I used it mainly as a reference during my board studying. It has great diagrams and references to biochemical diseases.

Even I learned Something
I have a B.S. in chemistry and am currently working on a M.S. in chemistry. I also help high school and college students in chemistry. I bought this book because I am always looking for more ways to explain the same topic so as to get my point across. I felt this does just that. Plus, I was very pleased because I learned some information that I did not previously know and this is an entry level book!

I am not going to say this book is perfect; its not. But I find the only flaws are the typos and the content is great. This is the type of book I read for enjoyment (I admit others will not) and I got something out of it. It assumes you know very little about chemistry and it teaches you how to apply chemistry in the real world. It is a fun read, and very very informative. I would not recommend this for taking an AP course in high school as your only source of information -- this is a supplemental information, not a text book. But it will teach you a lot the sometimes text books do not.
This is a great book to help you expand on your everyday knowledge to learn more about chemistry and how it effects your life. If you are looking for chemistry content and clarity, this book may be just for you.

Great book
This book is very informative and to the point. The examples and analogies are perfect to the content explained. The author actually makes it fun to learn chemistry, and makes you want to pursue a future in it (I'm going into Chem. Engineering). Like most books this doesn't put you to sleep with boring facts after facts. This is recommended to any high school student or beginner of college, and will give you a good head start.

Very helpful for the chemistry-challenged nursing student
I am a nursing student, and I wish I had purchased this book earlier in the semester, instead of waiting for it to become available at the public library. After reading, what I am studying makes so much more sense. Chemistry is less of a black hole now. I like the quirky way it's written. The author does a good job of making the information feel a lot more friendly. My chemistry textbook this term does a fairly good job of explaining things, but I was still lost. Chemistry for Dummies was the 'lightbulb' I needed to make everything clearer. I am algebra-challenged and this book was quite a helpful adjunct to the class.

As an aside, it's true... you will almost never need this much chemistry unless you are a chemistry major. And this is just the baby stuff! I have queried nurses and they tell me they simply don't use it. Very frustrating, and a huge mental stumbling block for me, especially since schools in my area which are geared toward two year RN degrees don't require Biology I & II, which is far more applicable to nursing than chemistry.

Now I just have to figure out a good book to help me muddle through the next level of chemistry (required for a master's degree). .. General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis. Gack!!!!

Good for Beginners
The book is great for beginners and is a good reference for confused college students. I am currently taking general chemistry and my textbooks is sometimes hard to understand. Chemistry for Dummies helps explain hard to get concepts and puts them in plain english. I especially liked the chapters on MOLES, Ionic Bonds, and Organic Chem.

Pretty good
This book does a good job of explaining basic chemical principles and application. While it might helpful to those who have weak background in chemistry and math yet are required to college-level chemistry courses, it was not written to be a textbook or study guide. Do not blame the book for what it does not intend to do. Many students today in this country cannot handle simple algebra that 7th grade students in many other countries have no difficuties with. Any books written above 8th grade reading level are difficult for even many college students to understand. It is unfair for them to blame this book for their failure in studying chemistry. It takes a lot more than a good book to be successful in any classes. This book, nor any others, is not a replacement of your positive attitude and hard work. Advanced Engineering Mathematics
As a text to learn mathematics, this text is better than average. However, there are numerous errors in terms of handling real physical systems. The author clearly does not understand the words "dimensional analysis" when he describes "real problems". Futhermore, many times the author seems quite willing to change physical laws in order to simplify the mathematics. For any doubters out there, consider the 1/r (not 1/r2) electrostatic force described on page 246 problem 19. Simply stated this text is above average if you plan on learning the mathematics needed to solve engineering/physics problems. However, under no circumstances should this text be used to obtain equations for real systems.

It's a worthless piece of junk
To be honest I must let everyone know that the course I used this book for only looked at a couple of chapters, from which we had the option of buying a special excerpt package. From those sections, I can safely conclude that this textbook was the most useless textbook I've ever had to use. Every example is of only the most basic cases, which makes it impossible to solve problems that are remotely different from those shown. The only thing worse than the textbook, was trying to make sense of the professors teaching the course. I'm sure that there is a more useful textbook out there, so buy that one instead.

This book should be a "must" for every graduate student in engineering, mathematics, and applied science. It is well-written and is very comprehensive. In fact, one just needs to read this book and teach other people. As long as you actually spend your time reading this book, you don't even need to come to class and you still score well on your exams. I myself have learned a great deal from this book.

Best undergraduate math book I have ever used

Merck Manual
This is a comprehensive book, detailing nearly every type of ailment known to mankind. Those who judge just one small portion of it (who may or may not have medical degrees to support their opinions) do the work an injustice by focusing on the narrow instead of the entire range of the book.

This book is full of detail that the average person can comprehend. At times the book does seem a bit rigid in that certain ailments can only occur in specific parts of the body. Case in point, my wife was diagnosed with a ganglion cyst on her ankle, an uncommon location, but according to the book, such cysts are limited to the wrist.

But this does not detract from the overall usefullness of this book as a standard reference. Of course, no book should be the sole source of medical evaluation and doctors must be consulted as the needs arise.

Every home needs this!
This book should be in the library of every home. Are you worried that you have something that is serious? Do you need a self-diagnosis to comfort you or to push you to seek further medical advice? Do you want to know what the treatments are for the ailment you are suffering under? The Merck Manual has all the info you need in easy language to help you better your health. Many people go to a doctor unnecessarily wasting time and money when they feel "sick". However, this manual will give you enough info on practically every health problem/issue out there so that you can decide whether to just heal at home or need medical attention. If you're someone who always "fears the worst" this book will help you ease your fears; while at the same time it tells you the straight facts about a certain condition. In each section, the manual gives you a brief description of the condition/illness, then it gives you the symptoms and diagnosis, and then the prognosis and treatment. There are also VERY helpful appendices where there are lists of medical terms, drug names (generic and trade), and an address directory for all major conditions (in case you need to call a particular organization for more info on a certain condition). This book must be in every home library out there. It is an indispensable tool for a healthy and long life.

The Merck Manual of Medical Information
Fantastic book for in depth but easy to understand reference book. It give you information in plain English, it's almost like a novel but very educational. For an example: It might say "take acetaminophen (Tylenol)" It gives you the meaning to words that are uncommon to everyday usage. Another great aspect is the the book uses a lot of examples after the explanation so that you can fully understand and apply that information if not understood. I have a learning disability (LD and ADD) and I find it very easy to read and understand with out mind boggling confusion.

Article on circumcision
Having recently assisted at the birth of my son and well informed in the most up-to-date research into the anatomy of the penis and the history and practice of circumcision in the U.S., I read with some surprise and no little chagrin the tendentious and rather uninformed presentation on the subject of circumcision. It is surprising that so little account is taken of penile anatomy or the rights of the subject (most often an infant) of this surgery. In the case of baby boys, no notice at all is taken of circumcision as the surgical removal of significant healthy genital tissue from healthy baby boys. A significant surgical procedure with no medical necessity...seems a bit odd to me. In any event, it certainly casts much doubt for me on the authority of the rest of the manual, which I surely hope stands on firmer scientific footing.

excellent introduction to basic chemistry
This book saved me in my college-level intro bio class.I hadn't had chemistry, but decided to take the class anyway.This gave me the basics that I needed to support what I learned in my text and class, and itprovided excellent review material at the end of the semester.I foundthat the systematic approach to building concepts very easy to understand,and the question/answer format made the material easy to remember.I wouldrecommend this book to any student who is taking a biology class that isheavily rooted in bio-chem who does not have a strong chemistry background.

Good study guide for basic chemistry concepts
This book of 207 pages is compact and well organized. It provides a very basic overview of chemistry concepts.It covers general concepts of Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry.Basically this book is set up like a work book that the student goes through. Answers are given right by the questions so there is no flipping back and forth.It does a fairly good job of also incorporating general biology concepts. A very helpful guide at work
I have never written a review on a textbook. However, I borrowed this book from a co-worker numerous times and found it to be incredibly helpful. I am a Registered Nurse whom is in a training program in the Operating Room. This book gives me a basic understanding of the proceedure to be performed and much anticipatory guidance. When dealing with a trauma or emergency surgery, I don't have time to go to the psuedo-classroom to research the operation. This book fits right into my scrub's pocket. It is brief, concise and to the point. Sure Gray's Anatomy is the most detailed and reliable source for any nurse, but who has the time and patience when you are in a hurry?
