Book Description

A computationally oriented comparison of solution algorithms for two stage and jointly chance constrained stochastic linear programming problems, this is the first book to present comparative computational results with several major stochastic programming solution approaches.
The following methods are considered: regularized decomposition, stochastic decomposition and successive discrete approximation methods for two stage problems; cutting plane methods, and a reduced gradient method for jointly chance constrained problems.
The first part of the book introduces the algorithms, including a unified approach to decomposition methods and their regularized counterparts. The second part addresses computer implementation of the methods, describes a testing environment based on a model management system, and presents comparative computational results with the various algorithms. Emphasis is on the computational behavior of the algorithms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting for researchers; not so much for students.
This not a bad book, and I didn't regret buying it. However, if you are interested in an introduction to stochastic linear programming, look for other books (e.g. Kall/Wallace or Birge/Louveaux). Indeed, the title doesnot convey the true nature of the book. Its subtitle (A comparison based ona model management system) better clarifies its purpose: it is a shortresearch monograph where different solution algorithms are compared. If youwant, it is a sort of high-level thesis work, from which a book has beenderived.

Computational tests are a quite significant part of the book, whereas the introduction to the field is quite brief (and limited in scope;for instance only two-stage problems with recourse are described).

Thetheoretical part aims at being rigorous and self-contained (since it startsfrom the basics of convex optimization), but it is too brief and hard toread for a student. It can be used as a reference for the experiencedreader, provided she tracks all the required references in the literature.Furthermore, it may be interesting for people searching for some work onchance constrained problems, since the author is an active researcher inthis area.

As to the computational testing, it is worth noting that theauthor describes how to generate problem instances to test differentalgorithms; this is good for people looking for benchmarks. On the otherhand, many readers will not find the description of the codes developed bythe author much useful.

On the whole, while it may be a useful readingfor a researcher, this is more a long survey article than a true book. Inview of this, a cheaper edition would have been better. ... Read more

Book Description

Proposing a wide range of mathematical models that are currently used in life sciences may be regarded as a challenge, and that is precisely the challenge that this book takes up. Of course this panoramic study does not claim to offer a detailed and exhaustive view of the many interactions between mathematical models and life sciences. This textbook provides a general overview of realistic mathematical models in life sciences, considering both deterministic and stochastic models and covering dynamical systems, game theory, stochastic processes and statistical methods. Each mathematical model is explained and illustrated individually with an appropriate biological example. Finally three appendices on ordinary differential equations, evolution equations, and probability are added to make it possible to read this book independently of other literature. ... Read more

Book Description

This book developed from a series of conferences to facilitate the application of mathematical modeling to experimental nutrition. As nutrition science moves from prevention of gross deficiencies to identifying requirements for optimum long term health, more sophisticated methods of nutritional assessment will be needed. Collection and evaluation of kinetic data may be one such method.
This books opens with chapters giving specific examples of the application of modeling techniques to vitamin A, carotenoids, folate, vitamin b-6, glycogen phosphorylase, transthyretin, amino acids, and energy metabolism. Obtaining kinetic data on internal processes is a major challenge; therefore, the text includes chapters on the use of microdialysis and ultrafiltration, use of membrane vesicles, and culture of mammary tissue.
Many of the authors use the Simulation, Analysis and Modeling program which allows compartmental models to be described without specifying the required differential equations. The final sections of the book, however, present some more mathematical descriptions of physiological processes, including bioperiodicity, metabolic control, and membrane transport; discussions of some computational aspects of modeling such as parameter distributions, linear integrators and identifiability; and alternative mathematical approaches such as neural networks and graph theory.

Book Description

The field of research in collegiate mathematics education hasgrown rapidly over the past twenty-five years. Many people areconvinced that improvement in mathematics education can onlycome with a greater understanding of what is involved when astudent tries to learn mathematics and how pedagogy can be moredirectly related to the learning process. Today there is asubstantial body of work and a growing group of researchersaddressing both basic and applied issues of mathematicseducation at the collegiate level.

This second volume in Research in Collegiate MathematicsEducation begins with a paper that attends to methodology andcloses with a list of questions. The lead-off paper describes adistinctive approach to research on key concepts in theundergraduate mathematics curriculum. This approach isdistinguished from others in several ways, especially itsintegration of research and instruction. The papers in thisvolume exhibit a large diversity in methods and purposes, ranging from historical studies, to theoretical examinations ofthe role of gender in mathematics education, to practicalevaluations of particular practices and circumstances.

As in RCME I, this volume poses a list of questions to the readerrelated to undergraduate mathematics education. The eighteenquestions were raised at the first Oberwolfach Conference inUndergraduate Mathematics Education, which was held in the fallof 1995, and are related to both research and curriculum. ... This collection of reprints of Featured Reviews published inMathematical Reviews (MR) makes widely available peer reviews ofsome of the best mathematics published 1994--1996.

Featured Reviews was introduced in MR at the beginning of 1995 inpart to provide some guidance to the current research-levelliterature. With the exponential growth of publications inmathematical research in the first half-century of MR, it hadbecome essentially impossible for the users of MR to identifythe most important new research-level books and papers, especially in fields outside of users' own expertise. This firstvolume identifies some of the papers and books of significantimportance published in 1994--1996 in areas of pure or appliedmathematics. All of the papers reviewed in this book containinteresting ideas or applications, a deep synthesis of existingideas, or any combination of these. The book is illustrated withphotos. The volume leads readers to important research acrossall fields covered by MR. ... Read more

Book Description

This textbook presents the design and analysis of experiments that comprises the aspects of classical theory for continuous response and of modern procedures for categorical response, and especially for correlated categorical response. For any design (independent response and matched pair response) the parametric and nonparametric tests depending on the data level are given. Complex designs, as for example, crossover and repeated measures, are included at an introductory and advanced level. The problem of missing data is discussed and the author proposes procedures for approaching this problem. This volume will be an important reference book for graduate students, university teachers, and for statistical researchers in the pharmaceutical industry and clinical research in medicine and dentistry, as well as in many other applied areas. This second edition contains more examples and graphical illustrations. Chapter 3, "The Linear Regression Model," now contains several diagnostic tools and more examples. Chapter 7, "Categorical Response Variables," was completely rewritten. The proofs of the more theoretical Chapters 3 and 4 were moved to an appendix. More emphasis has been placed on explaining and justifying some approaches.Helge Toutenburg is Professor of Statistics at the University of Munich. He has written seventeen books on linear models, statistical methods in quality engineering, and the analysis of designed experiments. He works on applications of statistics to the fields of medicine and engineering. ... Read more
