5-0 out of 5 stars a nice little book for intro to astronomy
Obviously there are no people who are completely clueless about astronomy since we all were taught as children (at least I was) about the planets in our solar system and about other galaxies. Beyond that most people would not know much about astronomy; which is where this nice little book comes in handy. It has enough information on astronomy subjects without mathematics and without being textbook-like. I think the value of this book is the combination of illustrations and text that stimulate an interest to explore the topics (in another, more extensive book) if this is so desired. And if not, then it is still a good overview of astronomy. Good book for the price!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to astronomy
I think that as an introduction to astronomy, this book is just great!! It helped me to understand the stars and planets, as well as related scientific theories, better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yet another deceptive book...
Wanting to teach myself a little astronomy, I purchased this book, since it somehow had acquired a noble status among similar literature. Upon receiving the book and looking through it, I simply wondered "how?". It seems that most books of this type suffer from similar defects. The design seems to be based off a children's activity book. Wide margins, plentiful empty, white space, and text that is big and ugly. Is it possible to publish a book of this purpose with a crisp, small font, several paragraphs per page, and clean, sharp diagrams/illustrations? Apparently not. Perhaps I'm alone in desiring an efficient, textbook-like layout. It seems possible that the complete text of this book could have been printed on 50 pages. Anyway, there's more. The book has been reprinted several times due to its popularity. Again, I'm at a loss for why. Though the cover, perhaps, has changed, the photos that litter its pages, seem to have not. Imagine for a moment taking a photo of Jupiter through a sheet of black tracing paper. Now imagine the resultant sharpness and resolution. Breathtaking, no? The overall quality of diagrams, illustrations, and photos is woeful. Lastly, this book, in sharing the rudiments of astronomical science felt compelled to discuss the wonderful world of SETI!!! SETI is a money-sucking escapade in speculative failure. This book, as most others do, discussess the pseudo-scientific merits of the SETI program, complete with reproductions of the diagrams we've sent along into outer space of a generic ( though peaceful looking), naked man and woman. Hmmm... You will find some science in this book, but if you hope to master the basics of astronomy and take part in an honest discussion regarding the limited understanding we still have of many things universal, I recommend looking elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars An armchair guide to the cosmos
I'm an armchair astronomer. While I save up to buy that telescope, I read books like this, attend star parties (dark sky gatherings where amateur astronomers let wannabes like me peek through their scopes) and daydream about the day when my future telescope sees first light.
This is a great book for people like me. It's the equivalent of a very thorough undergraduate "Introduction to Astronomy" class. The author makes good use of illustrations throughout the book to explain difficult concepts like stellar spectra, distances to astronomical objects, and how astronomers determine the temperature, mass, and composition of stars.
New discoveries are being made every day in astronomy, and of course it's impossible for a book to be as current as today's newspaper. Readers of this book will want to update themselves on certain topics, such as extrasolar planets, human spaceflight, SETI, the explosion of CCD photography in amateur astronomy, among others. A list of resources to do just that is provided in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to be entertained and enlightened at the same time. If you're like me, preparing to morph from armchair to amateur status, this book provides an excellent foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific introduction to Astronomy
I have just completed an introductory course in Astronomy and I was surprised to find out how much is covered in Dinah Moche's book. She is able to cut through to the important ideas and topics without a lot of minute details. If you want to start learning about astronomy, get this book. It is as good an intro you will get, including college. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the second edition of a highly successful textbook (over 50,000 copies sold) in which a highly illustrated, narrative text is combined with easy–to–use thoroughly reliable laboratory protocols. It contains a fully up–to–date collection of 12 rigorously tested and reliable lab experiments in molecular biology, developed at the internationally renowned Dolan DNA Learning Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, which culminate in the construction and cloning of a recombinant DNA molecule.

Proven through more than 10 years’ of teaching at research and nonresearch colleges and universities, junior colleges, community colleges, and advanced biology programs in high school, this book has been successfully integrated into introductory biology, general biology, genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular genetics, and molecular biology courses.

The first eight chapters have been completely revised, extensively rewritten, and updated. The new coverage extends to the completion of the draft sequence of the human genome and the enormous impact these and other sequence data are having on medicine, research, and our view of human evolution. All sections on the concepts and techniques of molecular biology have been updated to reflect the current state of laboratory research.

The laboratory experiments cover basic techniques of gene isolation and analysis, honed by over 10 years of classroom use to be thoroughly reliable, even in the hands of teachers and students with no prior experience. Extensive prelab notes at the beginning of each experiment explain how to schedule and prepare, while flow charts and icons make the protocols easy to follow.

As in the first edition of this book, the laboratory course is completely supported by quality–assured products from the Carolina Biological Supply Company, from bulk reagents, to useable reagent systems, to single–use kits, thus satisfying a broad range of teaching applications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Experienced Secondary Science Teacher Praises this Book
I am beginning my second semester using this book as my primary text for my secondary science methods class. My class has to provide students with a framework for teaching all the science content that they have mastered in their 3 years of college. This book provides an excellent source for students to think about what it means to be a science teacher, to understand major curriculum projects in earlier grades that will impact secondary science, and to address important issues of gender equity, inclusion, and national and state standards for teaching. There is too much material for me to cover fully in a 2 semester hour class, but, I try to talk about and discuss in class most of the content. The activities at the end of each chapter are excellent for giving students practical ways of applying information in the chapter. I have not found another book to equal this book's caliber and practical usefulness. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fancy Cover, Bad Book
Quite Frankly, this new Holt Phyiscs book, does NOT cover all the content that is involved in the detailed study of Physics. Not only that, but it leaves out some of the most important principles that are in physics. For example, Chapter 5-2, we talk about Energy, it doesn't give the law of conservation of energy, which is one of the most important laws in physics. It also when talking about Newton's laws, doesn't use the ideas that Newton had. There are so many things missing, I could go on forever, I wish I could give this book a negative score, but I can't do so. I'm currently in Physics at my school, and I like to study Physics in my spare time. Serway is a very good author of the college books, that I have, but this one does not cut it for a full understanding of Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Physics book!
This was the text book used in my honors physics class. Though it may not go into extremely advanced issues, it does touch on A LOT of material, including basic collisions, fluids, rotational motion, relativity (a bit), and even some quantum mechanics. This book is definitely useful to anyone who wants a better education in basic physics and a start into somewhat beginner's advanced physics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very well written and easy to follow
Excellent book! I found it to be very easy to follow. The author really has a grasp on the subject matter and presents it so clearly. I would definitely recommend this book for any level of student be it high school or college. This book is far superior to any major text that can be very dry and boring. The author makes learning fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The idea of biological order versus disorder
This author very successfully carries through the idea that some parts of Biology reflect Biological Order (recognizable patterns), while others reflect the exact opposite - - Biological Disorder (breaking or absence of recognizable patterns). He does this for both the individual living thing (using a giraffe with spots on the one hand, a dead giraffe with out its spots on the other), and for the environment (an intact spider web on the one hand, a broken spider web and dead spider on the other). Quite often, Biological Order means a healthy individual and "fit" environment, while Biological Disorder suggests an unhealthy individual and "unfit" environment. This two-way system of classification helps the reader associate certain key facts with particular types of symbols. This is a valuable and proven educational strategy for increasing the retention of facts and promoting long-lasting memory.

2-0 out of 5 stars Suffers from poor illustrations
This is an OK book, but it suffers from inadequate illustrations. Many more illustrations would have been very helpful, especially for an introductory book such as this. The illustrations the book does have are amateurish line drawings, which often do not even shed much light on the concepts.

In most cases, the text itself is pretty clear and readable. The style is informal and even entertaining. But in some parts, I had difficulty understanding what was being said. I think this problem would have been largely solved with more and better illustrations.

On the plus side, the book goes out of its way to explain the etymology (word origins) of words. This book was a big help to me in this respect. For example, knowing that adrenal means "toward" (ad-) the top of the "kidney" (renal) is a help in remembering and understanding this term. This is a significant thing, because biology has tons of technical terms, and it can be hard to remember them all. However, sometimes the way this book integrates the word roots into the sentence could be very confusing to someone who did not realize what the author was doing.

The book uses special symbols in the margins for biological Order and Disorder. However, I never saw the point of this. Why is it important to know that something leads to order or disorder? The book seems to think it is very important, but never adequately explained why this is so.

This is an overview, not an in-depth book. It is probably best suited for people who had a general biology class in high school or college, and now want a short refresher course. It is also much cheaper than most textbooks. The writing style seems more geared toward middle school or high school readers, but it would be a poor book for such readers, who are learning the concepts for the first time.

Overall, because of its lack of good illustrations, I would not recommend this book. There must be better books out there. I bought this book on impulse at the bookstore, without first checking the reviews on Amazon. I paid the penalty for my impatience and laziness, and got this mediocre book instead of a great book.

If you want a more in-depth introduction to general biology, I recommend Biology, 6th edition, by Campbell, ISBN: 0805366245. It is not as easy to read, because the information is densely packed. And it costs much more. But the explanations are clear and the illustrations are simply excellent. This is a very, very good textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
I bought this book thinking that it would help me with my bio class. After reading the first few chapters I felt that the book did nothing but confuse me. This layman guy seems to have no organization, and the chapters seem almost random. He jumps around from idea to idea without transitions. Topics that are completely unrelated are covered in the same paragraph. I have found my biology text to be alot easier to understand after reading this book. ... Read more

Book Description

With its distinctive investigative approach to learning, this effective laboratory manual encourages readers to become detectives of science. While teaching the basic materials and procedures important for all biology majors to learn, the authors also invite readers to pose hypotheses, make predictions, conduct open-ended experiments, collect data, and then apply the results to new problems. The result of this "process of science" approach is that readers learn to think creatively, just as scientists do. Laboratory exercises are divided into three categories: directed, thematic, and open-ended.For college instructors and students. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good concept but badly flawed
The approach this book takes is pretty good, I think. It starts with a bit of history, a description of the scientific method, and then some important concepts like significant digits and the difference between accuracy and precision. Lots of quizzes and tests to help you gauge your progress.

But the errors! I can't believe how sloppy this book is. Typos and mistakes everywhere. And big topics are slurred over, leading to massive confusion. A formula is given in the text, 2n^s. It quickly became apparent that it should have been 2n^2. And there are brief references to the s, d, p and f electron shells, but the way these are referred to in notation is never explained. Awful! Maddening!

I finally gave up in disgust; this one is going back, and I'm getting a refund.

It seems that the emphasis on sloppy, hasty publishing is spilling over from the IT book industry into other books. The author mentions that suggestions for a future edition are welcome. Here's one: TRY PROOFREADING.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
I made it to page 64 before I returned the book. There are just too many errors. Example 1: p23 477/5 = 70 NOT! Example 2: p43 claims that a periodic table chart is on the inside cover of the book. NOT! Example 3: p48, question 8 the right answer does not appear in any of the choices! Example 4: p64 A Molecule is composed of the same kinds of atoms, chemically bonded. NOT! (what about H20, get rid of the phrase "the same kinds of atoms") Example 5: p39, para 3 claims that the number 16, 32, 79!, and 128 are all multiples of the number 16 NOT! Don't buy this one. The writing style is accessible but there are too many errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is a great helper and refresher
this book is really good and working out for me. This book makes chemistry fun and simple to learn. i have to take a series of chemistry classes starting next semester and i feel that this book is reinforcing what i have already learned and reteaching this stuff in a way to where it is easier to understand and i like it and would recomend this book to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is a horrible waste of trees. Aside from the errors and omissions, it is condescending, thin in content (filled out with quizzes that take up many of the pages), and generally useless for any meaningful introduction to or overview of chemistry. I would give it zero stars if that were an option. Try the old workhorse "Chemistry Made Simple" instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tutorial
Chemistry was never my best subject, especially after high school. I couldn't grasp the concepts. This book defines things well, and the format is straightforward. After finishing this book I was not so confused anymore. There are other books in this same series (like biology, physics, trigonometry, calculus, etc.) all written in this same format. I have checked them out of the local library and recommend any or all of them, especially for home schooling, which I, the quintessential desert rat, am doing with all my kids. This book should be good for anybody who has had trouble with chemistry. It can help you get over the fear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
If you are a physics teacher in high school or freshman college or university, you should own this book. It allowed me to step in and address student difficulties in my first year teaching physics after 10 year of applied-physics research. Who could imagine that students would have difficulty with "simple" concepts such as torque, kinematic time concepts, and a realistic view of static electricity? Arnold B. Arons would, and you should! I worked through freshman college geology and AP statistics, grappling painfully with "obvious (sorry for the over-use of quotations, but I feel strongly about this)" topics that confused my students, but I feel that I slid smoothly into introductory physics because of Arons's insights, literature analyses, and clarifications. My students may not always appreciate labs and classworks that require unexpected thought and paradigm-shifts from Aristotelian thinking to rigorous classical-physics frameworks, but ultimately they benefit from the challenges that Arons asks us to accept and acknowledge. This book is Essential, I can't stress this strongly enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful. Excellent book.
This book is the best book I have seen so far about teaching physics. One can find the preconceptions of students, anticipated difficulties in teaching, recommended strategies for each topic, very well structured homework and test questions... A teacher (or an educated learning facilitator in a physics learning environment) can find several ideas and methods to create a fruitfull, pleasent, efficient learning experiences for students. The only thing that I did not like in the book is the non-existence of solutions to questions. It deserves 5-star. Higly recommended ... Read more

Book Description

/* 9126D-2, KLUG/CUMMINGS, Essentials of Genetics, 4E */ Presents a succinct overview of the discipline, with balanced coverage of both classical and modern genetics. Known for their clear writing style, emphasis on concepts, visual art program, and thoughtful coverage of all areas of genetics, the authors capture interest with up-to-date coverage of cutting edge topics and research. This book will help readers connect the science of genetics to the issues of today through interesting and thought provoking applications. Revision features 3 new chapters: Chapter 5, Sex Determination and Sex Chromosomes, Chapter 18, Genomics and Proteomics, and Chapter 24, Conservation Genetics—Genenomics and Proteomics put this book at the cutting edge of a rapidly moving field. The Conservation Genetics chapter is the first really new chapter that has appeared in any genetics book over the past decade. The Population Genetics and Evolutionary Genetics chapters are updated and significantly enriched by Jon Herron (co-author of Evolutionary Analysis, 2/e). The Technology and Society Essays include numerous revisions and several new topics—Genetically Modified Foods is addressed with a new essay in Chapter 1; new essay in Chapter 18 addresses Gene Therapy in the context of Genomics; there are two short boxes that represent “molecular snippets” in the transmission genetic chapters (3 and 5); and new section on molecular genetics in Chapter 1. Two biotechnology chapters cover technologies and analysis, and applications and ethics. Human behavior genetics includes recent findings on genes controlling manic depression (Chapter 20). Up-to-date coverage of contemporary topics includes ethical questions raised by genetic testing and the human genome project. It will appeal to evolutionarily-oriented professionals in the biological sciences, zoology, agriculture, and health science fields. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult for Beginners
If you are taking an introduction to genetics course, this book is difficult to understand. It seemingly presents the concepts for those that have had previous knowledge of genetics. The chapters on Mendelian Genetics, Mitosis, and Meiosis are done well, but later chapters dealing with regulation, mutation, transcription, and translation are difficult to understand. The pictures are not very helpful, either. If this book is required for your introductory genetics course, i recommend getting another book in addition to this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars very interesting concepts for learning
I took this course because it is a required course for my major. After getting into the first month of classes, I started to read the textbook. Genetics is a very interesting topic, and this book displays this. It breaks down concepts for the student to understand, and has great photos and figures. There are also one to two page "stories" which relate to the concept of the chapter at the end of each chapter. These are real stories of history or happenings of how Genetics has severely affected people. There is also a review and questions at the end of each chapter. Overall, I would give the book a four star rating. ... Read more

For Timesavers not Great for Bookshelves.
I used this book quite infrequently because of the too short and simple contents. I rather refer to a complete text and shorten them by my own.
Futhermore, this book is not great for bookshelves. It's a paperback!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Study Guide
I used this book while pursuing my B.S. in Biochemistry and it is 'hands down' the best study guide I ever used. It covers all of the primary topics in undergraduate biochemistry and gives pertinent examples without extraneous information. I highly recommend it as a study aid, especially for standardized tests. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biology Book Ever Written
For the money you can't beat Steven Daniel Garber's biology book, "Biology: A Self-Teaching Guide." He has done what virtually no one has ever been able to do. Explain biology in clear, succinct, beautiful brushstrokes that actually get each and every important concept and term across to both the casual reader and the frantic student trying to cram before the next exam. Garber has a knack for telling a story. Any story. Be it about insect blood or about impulses traveling down a nerve cell. He only says what the reader must know. No frills. But he always says it beautifully. In a manner that actually makes this book hard to put down. Now tell me the same thing about another biology book in the history of the world. I'll bet you can't. He's the best technical writer ever. And I mean ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology: A Self-Teaching Guide
Clear, succinct, explains everything really well. I wish all my texts were this easy to understand.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good survey of the material
Do not be misled by the generally high quality of Mr. Garber's previous work. The "self-teaching" guide is more vocabulary list than textbook. Critical missing features include (a) some notion of life as _process_ rather than a lengthy list of elements of cell anatomy, (b) poikilothermy appears in end-of-chapter questions, but the text does not compare it with homeothermy in any useful way, (c) comparative anatomy illustrations are not drawn to scale, making it difficult to make appropriate comparisons. The vocabulary lists and end-of-chapter multiple choice questions would save a first-year teaching assistant some time preparing for classes for non-majors. The book is not much help in acquiring a general understanding of the basic science. ... Read more

Book Description

Although effective fire sprinkler systems are crucial to public safety, for years, the designers of those systems had few published resources to reference and guide them through their design processes. The first edition of this book changed all that, and now The Design and Layout of Fire Sprinkler Systems Second Edition suits their needs even better.Written and thoroughly updated by a fire prevention engineer with more than 20 years of experience, this book provides a complete, systematic introduction to automatic fire sprinkler design and layout, from design basics, code requirements, and pipe hanging to hydraulic calculations, retrofits, and details on fire pumps. The author carefully outlines all of a designer's responsibilities and includes an entire chapter dedicated to preparing for the NICET exam.More than 150 sample diagrams, checklists, sample forms, spec sheets, photographs, and a glossary complement the text, and the larger page size of this edition permits clear presentation of diagrams and schematics. The Design and Layout of Fire Sprinkler Systems not only builds the foundation and skills of newcomers to the field, but also provides an outstanding reference for fire safety professionals, building inspectors, insurance underwriters, and municipal officials. ...
