5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help in your Modern Physics Course
Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Therefore, it does not, to my way of thinking, worth to buy it if Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) is on stock. However, if this book, which I did not buy, is out of print. Then I have got another talk.

Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed. More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).

I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you in more than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.

(Dear readers: Please note that I have rated only the modern physics chapters of this book). ... Read more

The Art of Teaching Science focuses on the preparation of science teachers as professional artists. This text emphasizes a humanistic, experiential, and constructivist approach to teaching and learning, integrating a wide variety of pedagogical learning tools. These tools involve inquiry, experimentation, reflection, writing, discussion, and interaction. Becoming a science teacher is a creative process, and this innovative textbook encourages students to construct ideas about science teaching through their interactions with peers, professionals, and instructors, and through hands-on, minds-on activities designed to foster a collaborative, thoughtful learning environment. The Art of Teaching Science is a science-teaching handbook designed for the professional development of middle- and high-school science teachers. The experiential tools in the book make it useful for both pre- and in-service teacher education environments, easily adapted to any classroom setting. Profound changes in our understanding of the goals of science teaching-as evidenced by the emphasis on inquiry-based activities advocated by the National Science Education Standards-underscore the need to equip a new cadre of educators with the proper tools to encourage innovation and science literacy in the classroom. Providing meaningful learning experiences and connections with the most recent research and understanding of science teaching, The Art of Teaching Science sets the standard for the future of science education. ... Book Description

The Conserving Earth's Biodiversity CD-ROM is an entirely new way to study and teach conservation biology and environmental science. Created from the ground up to make the most of today's multimedia technology, it provides a rich learning experience and a wealth of valuable information and materials - including interactive models that allow learners to study dynamic systems, detailed maps, and links to resources on the World Wide Web - that build upon and enhance traditional approaches to the subject.

Conserving Earth's Biodiversity is a pioneering educational tool based on the teachings and writings of renowned biologist Edward O. Wilson, and created and developed by science educator Dan Perlman.

The program's insightful pedagogy combined with a unique use of multimedia makes it an ideal complement to any standard textbook.

Edward O. Wilson is University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. Arguably the most important evolutionary biologist of his time, he has made seminal contributions to the study of evolution and ecology, created the field of sociobiology, and was one of the earliest voices to speak out about biodiversity loss. Among his books are Sociobiology (Harvard, 1975), The Diversity of Life (Harvard, 1992), and Consilience (Knopf, 1998). Books published by Island Press are Naturalist (1994) and In Search of Nature (1996).

Dan L. Perlman has taught conservation biology at Harvard University for nine years, in addition to teaching all ages from pre-school to post-graduate education for college professors and professionals. He has designed curricula, co-authored with Glenn Adelson the textbook Biodiversity: Exploring Values and Priorities in Conservation (Blackwell, 1997), and is a nature photographer and former systems analyst. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Sidekick To Marieb's 6th Edition Text
This laboratory manual is the perfect follow-up to Marieb's 6th Edition for many, many reasons. It not only goes into greater detail about material presented in the book with suggested lab exercises, but also successfully breaks down all the "fluff" into an understandable format. Utilizing the effectiveness of the PhysioEX CD-ROM and the many detailed diagrams which come in a massive abundance, this lab manual is perfectly suitable for anyone looking for an extra reference source to use. Overall there are 46 different exercises which closely mirror the progressing content of the book, along with 46 more practice exercises that're really quizzes over the covered material. The many highlighted phrases and bolded words really help to point out what is most crucial to memorize and (as I've found after taking my first test) really are a big help. All in all I'd have to say this lab manual is nothing short of spectacular - from the way it meticulously guides the student through the actual lab step by step, to the way the information is presented in an understandable manner. The price is pretty reasonable, however the only advice I do have for potential buyers is to try and buy a hardback copy if available. The one I own that came with my text is a spiral-bound paperback and is very susceptible to damage. Nevertheless, if you're not able to find a hardback copy I'd still recommend this to anyone taking Anatomy & Physiology simply for its priceless information. ... Read more

Book Description

The book demonstrates the importance of history and philosophyof science for science education. It provides a case study of thependulum, showing the pivotal role played by the pendulum in theScientific Revolution. It describes how the pendulum enabled thecreation of accurate clocks that, among other things, enabled thelong-standing problem of longitude to be solved. The book charts howthe solution of the longitude problem was of enormous social, economicand cultural significance for European and consequently world history.Further, the book shows how the discovery of the laws of pendulummotion by Galileo, Huygens and Newton hinged on the acceptance of anew methodology for science. The pendulum laws are a window throughwhich to view the fascinating mixture of experiment, mathematics andphilosophy that characterized the foundations of modern science- the Galilean-Newtonian paradigm - anddistinguished it from Aristotelian, medieval and commonsense science. The book covers: learning about the nature of science; navigation andthe longitude problem; ancient and medieval timekeeping; Galileo'sanalysis of pendulum motion; Huygens, Hooke, Newton and the pendulum;clocks and culture; science and philosophy; the mechanical world view;teaching about time and pendulum motion; and teacher education andculture. The book defends a liberal, or contextual, approach to the teaching ofscience. It shows how understanding the scientific, philosophical andcultural contexts and ramifications of the pendulum laws can allowteachers to plan more engaging lessons, and conduct informativehistorical- investigative experiments. Students can re-live history.Contextual understanding of the pendulum allows connections to be madewith other parts of the science curriculum, and with other subjectareas such as geography, literature, religion, music and mathematics.Readers will come away with a deeper understanding of the nature ofscience and its role in history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready?
I promise you Mr. Hogan will cause you to reconsider some of your most closely held beliefs. Beliefs that until now were so obvious there was little need to even think about the rationale behind them. From AIDS to global warming to evolution to the history of the solar system to the ozone layer to relativity and the big bang, Mr. Hogan asks whether existing data might be just as well (or better) be explained by alternatives other than the conventional wisdom.

While the author clearly has his own beliefs, he does not shove them down the throat of the reader, but offers alternatives to the common wisdom and challenges the reader to think more clearly about their long-held assumptions and how they got them. This is done in the spirit that scientific inquiry is not afraid of facts, but strives to reach conclusions consistent with the facts. I don't believe anyone can come through a careful reading of this book without beginning to question at least some beliefs and assumptions that they previously accepted without a second thought.

Some parts of sections two and three about cosmology and relativity get a little complicated, so if you find yourself beginning to get bogged down, skip ahead to the later sections, and come back to these sections at your leisure rather than quitting.

This book is a marvelous read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for my course
I began presenting an intro course on environmental topics, for which there is a mound of ordinary texts. It was hard to choose, and I doubted if much would be retained from set reading. McConnell and Abel's Environmental Issues, when I found it, proved to be the best choice. Though not comprehensive it sets achievable tasks for my students, gets them busy and both links several skills together and hones them. Since adopting it, I see definite improvements in interest, attention and achievement. It has even given me confidence to start adding modules from my own areas of interest, so clear is the design. ... Read more
