Late Cenozoic glaciation directly affected sedimentation on more than half the Earth's continental shelves. Ice continues to be a dominant influence on sedimentation around Greenland and Antarctica, and on the shelves facing the Arctic Ocean. The features of these shelves include true glacimarine features, i.e. those found in a marine environment in proximityto, or strongly under the influence of, ice, such as iceberg scours and pits, ice gouges and incisions, subglacial outwash deposits, and diamictons resulting from ice rafting. Also seen, because large areas of the shelves were exposed during the Pleistocene lowering of sea level, are terrestrial glacial and periglacial features, e.g. fluvial outwash valleys and associated deposits, tunnel valleys, drumlin fields and lodgement till, which have subsequently been submerged and modified by marine influences.Glaciated Continental Margins: An Atlas of Acoustic Images illustrates the complexity of features found in glaciated and formerly glaciated marine environments. The purpose of this book is to give a theoretical and practical introduction to seismic-while-drilling by using the drill-bit noise. This recent technology offers important products for geophysical control of drilling. It involves aspects typical of borehole seismics and of the drilling control surveying, hitherto the sole domain of mudlogging.

For aspects related to the drill-bit source performance and borehole acoustics, the book attempts to provide a connection between experts working in geophysics and in drilling.

There are different ways of thinking related to basic knowledge, operational procedures and precision in the observation of the physical quantities. The goal of the book is to help "build a bridge" between geophysicists involved in seismic while drilling - who may need to familiarize themselves with methods and procedures of drilling and drilling-rock mechanics - and drillers involved in geosteering and drilling of "smart wells" - who may have to familiarize themselves with seismic signals, wave resolution and radiation. The Salt of the Earth
In the introduction to "Music of the Earth," Morton laments that his editor removed a great deal of his "cornball humor" from early drafts of the book. She obviously didn't get it all, but what remains shows that Morton has a genuine and even charming enthusiasm for his subject.

"Music of the Earth" explores a wide range to geological topics, from continental drift, volcanoes and earthquakes to geysers, ice ages, deserts and mass extinctions. Morton explains the basics of geology using analogies that sometimes seem a bit forced (try using "grandma's apple pie" to illustrate plate tectonics), but I have to admit that the corny examples helped me to understand the subject better than more elegant discussions in other books.

All in all, I enjoyed reading Morton's book because he has a genuine and infectious enthusiasm for geology. You may shake your head at the occasional bad pun, but I suspect that you'll learn more from Morton than you will from other, stuffier earth science texts.

Learn geology while being entertained
If you want to learn some geology, with emphasis on volcanism, this is the place to start. Ron Morton gives a good overview of geological sciences, entertaining us all the way, and at times even painting frightening word pictures. With comments on poetry, literature, politics, engineering, and human behaviour, Dr.Morton appears as the modern renaissance man. We are all the richer for having this book, and we envy the real winners, who surely are the students in Dr. Morton's geology classes. ... Read more

Must Read on Urban Poor
This book provides an excellent account of the Mexico city earthquate. Yet what is most poignant about it is that it describes the events through the eyes of the urban poor. IT is very detailed in description, and at times graphic. Some of the accounts are inspiring, while many of them reveal the true nature of the Mexican ruling class. If anyone is interested in urban poor in South America, this book is a must read. It will have you cheering the silent heroism of so many poor Mexicans, while at the same time arousing a feirce anger towards the government that let so many of them down.

The book also conveys to the reader a sense of the magnitude of Mexican city and how devasting the earthquake was. It reveals how the poor are so dramatically affected by such an event, yet how they are so often forgotten. Literally, to the point of death. This is an excellent book. ... Read more
