Book Description

This graduate textbook provides a concise, accessible introduction to the Standard Model of particle physics. Theoretical concepts are developed clearly and carefully throughout the book--from the electromagnetic and weak interactions of leptons and quarks to the strong interactions of quarks. Chapters developing the theory are interspersed with chapters describing some of the wealth of experimental data supporting the model. The book assumes only the standard mathematics taught in an undergraduate physics course; more sophisticated mathematical ideas are developed in the text and in appendices. For graduate students in particle physics and physicists working in other fields who are interested in the current understanding of the ultimate constituents of matter, this textbook provides a lucid and up-to-date introduction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Particle Physics
This book is an excellent introduction to particle physics. The chapters are short, clear and very readable. As the previous reviewer mentioned, there are a series of reasonable exercises at the end of each chapter with answers provided in the back of the book. Many concepts that field theory or particle physics books leave mysterious or have a difficult time explaining are clearly laid out in this book. I would judge it superior to Griffiths particle physics book, and if you are looking for a nice supplement to serious study of quantum field theory, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to particle physics
This is indeed an excellent book in particle physics. It will serve as a good introduction to gauge fields of particle physics.
The book is very readable and does not assume more than undergraduate physics. Each chapter ends with a set of problems with solution at the end of the book. It contains a lot of material which can be learned in a short time. I strongly recommend it for a beginner. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the paperback version of the original multimedia CD introducing Spin Wave Technology. It has many minor updates and corrections. References to scientific research support information on the internet has been updated to remove dead links and add new links. In addition, this book contains 4 more preliminary chapters introducing magnetic levitation designs that utilize spin wave technology. This paperback version includes a table of contents, footnotes, bibliography and an index.

This is a book of informal research papers written by George J Bugh while investigating claims by many inventors and researchers who have built unusual electromagnetic devices said to produce anomalous energy output and even electrogravity effects.

Mr. Bugh is a senior staff aerospace electronics engineer with over 20 years experience. He spent the last 7 years studying these claims to determine if any could be valid and if so then to determine the source of the anomalous energy and the electrogravity effects.

According to classical electrodynamics, all electrically charged particles, like quarks and electrons, should radiate away energy from gyroscopic precessional motions and orbital motions. Bugh has come to the conclusion that they really do. However, all particles are also absorbing just as much energy from all other radiating particles.

The continuously absorbed energy equals the radiated energy and applies forces that move similar type particles into harmonious precesssional motions with each other. This results in a sea of electromagnetic standing waves among all matter in the universe.

It is this sea of standing waves rather than quantum probability waves that best account for the wave like nature of matter. Particles move to quantized states because of electromagnetic forces that keep particle motions synchronized with this sea of standing waves.

This is an interaction among all matter that Ernst Mach alluded to as necessary to cause matter's characteristic of inertia. Einstein called this Mach's Principle. Einstein studied Mach's ideas while developing his theory of General Relativity.

Using common sense and classical electrodynamics, Bugh explains how these particle spin interactions are possible even among compensating spins. Technology advancements are possible based on these particle spin interactions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Info - Less than Perfect Book - Buy it anyway
George J Bugh should have commissioned someone else to write this work. It lacks flow and often fails to build the knowledge base for what Bugh is attempting to convey. With this being said. The technical detal is astounding and I believe as an engineer George J Bugh is on track. If you have any intrest in Spin Wave's this book is a must but I would much rather have Bugh designing some of the devices and having others write about his success.

Note: I Purchased both the CD-Rom and the Text!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarification from the Vasant Corporation
The CD and Book are sold separately. A previous review made this confusing to some people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
I first heard about this book after doing a search on eBay for "free energy". This is a book containing 44 chapters. Each chapter generally consists of a research paper written by Mr. Bugh after he began writing his thoughts down regarding the nature of waves starting several years ago. They are quite scientific with math formulas and diagrams explaining his concepts, helping educate the reader while getting his points across. It is extensively indexed and contains literally hundreds of web page links for the savvy investigator desiring more in-depth research. He covers many concepts from the Charge Of An Electron, to Magnetic Waves, Anti-Gravity, and the Nature of Time. Unfortunately, all of Mr. Bugh's research are his theories alone, having made no actual devices himself. However, he does mention that others have made devices similar to what his research suggests. All in all, an interesting and thought provoking read, with tons of sources for further investigation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete book & CD on the subject of Spin Waves.
The Spin Waves CD-ROM and Book are extremly informative and educational. They were done by a person who obviously has a great knowledge on the subject. The author is probably the most knowledgeble person in the world on this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good information on classical spin waves
This was my first publication through the Vasant Corporation. They have published my research papers on spin wave processes.
The arrows in diagrams showing electron spin and precession directions were drawn the wrong direction relative to magnetic North for a negatively charged particle like the electron. This is corrected in the forh coming paperback version. The text and diagrams of the research papers provide information for those wanting to understand spin wave processes in a classical way. The CD includes a video that is very helpful in understanding spin wave processes in power generation devices. This research is related to the study of previously unexplained energy output and even claims of electrogravity side effects reported by many private inventors and researchers who have built unusual electromagnetic devices. ... This is the one of best overall book on the electronic theory of solids. It certainly covers all relevant aspect one could ever want to know about the topic and does a phenomenal job of clearly explaining and demonstrating the material. The best example is the chapter dedicated to the Fermi liquid with the very illuminating explanations of the theory of quasiparticles. This book is easy to read and its lecture does not require advanced mathematical knowledge. It is an excellent textbook and a very good start point for research problems. It is also remarkable the use of state of the art results and the elimination of several common misconceptions. I must say that the exercises are a good opportunity to better understand the material. ... Read more

Book Description

The availability of intense X-ray beams from synchroton storage rings has revolutionised the field of X-ray science. This is illustrated by the cover pictures: Von Laue's first observation of X-ray diffraction from a single crystal of ZnS used an exposure time of around 1000 seconds, whereas the diffraction from a single crystal of myoglobin using modern X-ray synchroton radiation was obtained within the duration of a single pulse lasting only 0.00000000001 seconds.
In this book the basics of X-ray physics, as well as the completely new opportunities offered by synchrotron radiation, are viewed from a modern perspective. The style of the book is to develop the basic physical principles without obscuring them in too much mathematical rigour. This approach should make the book attractive to the wider community of material scientists, chemists, biologists and geologists, as well as to physicists who use synchrotron radiation in their research. The book should be useful both to students taking course in X-rays, and to more experienced professionals who have the desire to extend their knowledge into new areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary book on X-ray scattering
Before this book came out, the bible of the scientists in the field was either Guinier's or else, Warren's book on X-ray diffraction (both books by Dover). I think Jens Als-Nielsen's book will replace these as far as introduction to the field is concerned, because the other two books (especially warren's black book) are pages of equation after equation. Elements of Modern X-ray Physics, in contrast, is much more readable (it has colors even... wohooo). Also it covers recent techniques suxh as scattering from liquid interfaces that were not covered in previous books. Trade-off is that the book does not cover any crystallography. Author's say in the preface that they feel there are other adequate books on this subject (guinier's book prevails).

Interesting note: Book is written not with conventional text editors but with some type of Tex/LaTex. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the third, significantly expanded edition of the comprehensive textbook published in 1990 on the theory and applications of path integrals. It is the first book to explicitly solve path integrals of a wide variety of nontrivial quantum-mechanical systems, in particular the hydrogen atom. The solutions have become possible by two major advances. The first is a new euclidean path integral formula which increases the restricted range of applicability of Feynman's famous formula to include singular attractive 1/r and 1/r2 potentials. The second is a simple quantum equivalence principle governing the transformation of euclidean path integrals to spaces with curvature and torsion, which leads to time-sliced path integrals that are manifestly invariant under coordinate transformations.

In addition to the time-sliced definition, the author gives a perturbative definition of path integrals which makes them invariant under coordinate transformations. A consistent implementation of this property leads to an extension of the theory of generalized functions by defining uniquely integrals over products of distributions.

The powerful Feynman–Kleinert variational approach is explained anddeveloped systematically into a variational perturbation theory which, in contrast to ordinary perturbation theory, produces convergent expansions. The convergence is uniform from weak to strong couplings, opening a way to precise approximate evaluations of analytically unsolvable path integrals.

Tunneling processes are treated in detail. The results are used to determine the lifetime of supercurrents, the stability of metastable thermodynamic phases, and the large-order behavior of perturbation expansions. A new variational treatment extends the range of validity of previous tunneling theories from large to small barriers. A corresponding extension of large-order perturbation theory also applies now to small orders.

Special attention is devoted to path integrals with topological restrictions. These are relevant to the understanding of the statistical properties of elementary particles and the entanglement phenomena in polymer physics and biophysics. The Chern–Simons theory of particles with fractional statistics (anyons) is introduced and applied to explain the fractional quantum Hall effect.

The relevance of path integrals to financial markets is discussed, and improvements of the famous Black–Scholes formula for option prices are given which account for the fact that large market fluctuations occur much more frequently than in the commonly used Gaussian distributions.

The author’s other book on ‘Critical Properties of f4 Theories’ gives a thorough introduction to the field of critical phenomena and develops new powerful resummation techniques for the extraction of physical results from the divergent perturbation expansions. ... Read more

Kleinerts book "Path Integrals in Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, and Polymer Physics" presents the reader with a very complete and very thorough discussion of path integration. The book offers such a wealth oftopics,it becomes straightforward to select material, both for advancedundergraduate as well as graduate courses in theoretical physics.

Many, many issues dealt with in this volume have appeared here for the firsttime, such as the inclucion of the quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atomthrough path integrals. This book is a major step towards bringing thisapproach to quantum physics onto the same educational footing as theSchrödinger equation that standard texts focus on.This book profits fromthe clarity and conciseness that is also a hallmark of Kleinerts scientificpapers.

Book Description

This classic text builds a solid introduction to the concepts and techniques of quantum mechanics in settings where the phenomena treated are sufficiently simple that the student can readily assess the validity of the models or the reliability of the approximations and can thus concentrate on the intrinsic difficulties of the subject. The treatment thus confines itself to systems that can either be solved exactly or be handled by well-controlled, plausible approximations. With few exceptions, this means systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. The exceptions are many-electron atoms, the electromagnetic field, and the Dirac equation. (The inclusion of these last two topics reflects the now widely held belief that every physicist should have should have some knowledge of these cornerstones of modern physics.) This new edition has been completely revised and rewritten throughout, but retains the clarity and readability of the first edition. Born in Vienna, Kurt Gottfried emigrated to Canada in 1939 and received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955. He is professor of physics at Cornell University, and had previously been at Harvard University and at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the co-author of Concepts of Particle Physics (with V.F. Weisskopf) and of Crisis Stability and Nuclear War. Gottfried has done research in both nuclear and particle physics; he has an active interest in arms control and human rights and is a founder and currently the Chair of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Book Description

Mesoscopic physics refers to the physics of structures larger than a nanometer (one billionth of a meter) but smaller than a micrometer (one millionth of a meter). This size range is the stage on which the exciting new research on submicroscopic and electronic and mechanical devices is being done. This research often crosses the boundary between physics and engineering, since engineering such tiny electronic components requires a firm grasp of quantum physics. Applications for the future may include such wonders as microscopic robot surgeons that travel through the blood stream to repair clogged arteries, submicroscopic actuators and builders, and supercomputers that fit on the head of a pin. The world of the future is being planned and built by physicists, engineers, and chemists working in the microscopic realm. This book can be used as the main text in a course on mesoscopic physics or as a supplementary text in electronic devices, semiconductor devices, and condensed matter physics courses. For this new edition, the author has substantially updated and modified the material especially of chapters 3: Dephasing, 8: Noise in mesoscopic systems, and the concluding chapter 9. ... Read more

Book Description

The magnetocaloric effect describes the change in temperature of a magnetic material under adiabatic conditions through the application or removal of an external magnetic field. This effect is particularly pronounced at temperatures and fields corresponding to magnetic phase transitions, and it is a powerful and widely used tool for investigation of the magnetic state and mechanisms of these transitions. More recently there has been significant interest in its possible exploitation in magnetic refrigeration and cryocooling systems.

The Magnetocaloric Effect and its Applications presents a complete overview of theoretical and experimental research results surrounding the magnetocaloric effect, and a comprehensive discussion of current and potential applications of the phenomenon. The book reviews those materials with magnetic moment of both band and localized nature and various types of magnetic ordering, and materials with more exotic magnetic structures are also considered. A detailed discussion of experimental and theoretical studies of a great number of rare earth magnetic materials is given, with emphasis on the physical interpretation of observed phenomena. ... Book Description

Granular materials are an integral part of our everyday life. They are also the base material for most industrial processing techniques. The highly dissipative nature of the particle collisions means energy input is needed in order to mobilize the grains. This interplay of dissipation and excitation leads to a wide variety of pattern formation processes, which are addressed in this book. The reader is introduced to this wide field by, first, a description of the material properties of granular materials under different experimental conditions that are important in connection with the pattern formation dynamics and, second, by further details given later on in the description of the specific system. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Between a Rock and a Hard Place!
The study of the behavior of granular materials is thousands of years old. And the behavior of granular materials affects each of us every day. From foodstuffs to pharmaceuticals to the substrates our houses rest on and our vehicles travel over. Yet it is only in the past decade or so that computers have become large enough to try to solve the multibody physics problems that underlie granular materials behavior. The technology is wrestling with old testing methods that tell us how to measure behavior but not why, and sophisticated theories that few of us who need to know if and how the 'why' changes the 'how' can quickly grasp. The Ristow book is translated from German. The translation is excellent. Ristow's approach is dispassionate and straightforward, without burdening the first-time reader with huge quantities of theory. Yet he summarizes quite succinctly the computer methods currently in vogue. It is a short, terse book that seems to cover the major thoughts regarding granular material behavior, including the "pile" experiments and the "rotating drum" experiments. A sound piece of work that will undoubtedly need to be updated in five year or less. ... Read more
