5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any aspiring NMR jockeys
For those studying biomolecules with NMR, the unofficial bible is of course the maroon colored Cavanagh book. Though this is an excellent book, it isn't the best suited book for beginners. This is where Levitt's book comes in: this is by far the kindest introduction to NMR that I have seen, with heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts first and the formalism later. The book is full of useful diagrams, detailed analogies, and exercises for the reader where other books only show equations. So borrows someone's Cavanagh first, and if you get stuck after 20 pages then order yourself a copy of Levitt and you won't be disappointed. If you already have studied NMR and are looking at how to apply it to proteins, then Cavanagh should suit you fine.

This book could simply be stated as an excellent attempt to introduce the foundations of NMR. It is a very good primer on all theoretical aspects that are essential to an understanding of the subject.
It offers a methodical, step-by-step approach. Useful tools and consistent terminology are the most attracting feature of this volume. It is well-illustrated; and controversial issues are highlighted in the "Notes" sections at the end of each chapter. It has illustrative problems at the end of each chapter, with solutions provided at the end.
Interestingly, the appendix covers many important aspects that are needed at a more advanced stage. Useful tools for the understanding of NMR are developed at appropriate stages. These include: the box notation for coherences, populations, density matrices and transitions; the origin of NMR spectra from individual coherence terms in the density matrix; origin of 2-D NMR signals as well as many important concepts in Fourier Transform NMR are described. The origins of relaxation enjoy a very readable and simplistic approach in the last chapter.
Whenever simplistic approximations are used, the author never claims of completeness or rigour. Distinction is made between terms that are physically correct and terms that are sometimes misleading, but enjoy widespread use in the NMR spectroscopy convention. The essential tools in quantum mechanics are outlined, product operator descriptions are used frequently and repetitively, that enhances understanding and provides more practice. Pictorial representations have been given where possible, a view-point beginners like myself find very useful.
One drawback, is a careful side-lining of the very important technique of using pulse-field gradients, although their cousin technique, named pulse-cycles is quite elaborately explained. I hope, the next issue of the book would also cover up this important technique. ... Read more

I'm not a bench chemist, but I needed a quick survey of how mass spectroscopy is used in handling proteins and other big biomolecules. This book was it.

Although brief, it is thorough and well-organized. The first two chapters are mostly an introduction. Chapter 1 mostly just states the problem being solved. The next chapter is a brief introduction to older technologies, inclduding chemical techiques and 60s-80s mass spec technique. The next two chapters summarize modern mass spec hardware, then start to show how proteins behave in the environment inside the instrument. That gives the fundamentals of protein sequencing: how the molecules break down, and how the fragments help recreate the molecule. The authors go through a few examples in detail, starting from a mass spectrogram and moving forward to sequence. I was especially impressed by the examples that fail. Mass spec analysis is not a magic wand for producing sequences, it is a deductive process, and can not complete an analysis when clues are missing or ambiguous.

The next three chapters are not about mass spec directly. Instead, they discuss how samples are prepared for analysis. This includes the clearest, most informative description of gel electrophoresis that I've seen, along with features of gel chemistry that do or do not interfere with mass spec measurements. This includes a discussion of protein digests, enzymatically produced fragments, and their place in analysis. I would have liked a little more discussion about combining information from digests produced by different enzymes, but no book can cover everything.

The last three chapters extend the discussion of analysis, working upwards from fragments to complete protein sequences. The three chapters respectively address three topics: using standard internet databases for recognizing fragments of known proteins, using combinations of strategies to analyze novel protein, and using mass spec to identify post-translational modifications. That last one suffers from brevity; perhaps it was only meant to define a problem that deserves a whole book of its own.

Despite its throughness, the authors resist the urge for boggling detail. They present detail up to the point needed for understanding the mechanism and meaning of their topics, then stop. Lots of other writing would benefit from that kind of restraint.

I came away from this book well-informed, and ready to address specific topics in greater detail. That was exactly what I wanted. I recommend this book very highly.

Michael Kinter has presented the topic in a scientific yet enjoyable format. I found the information to be extremely interesting and beneficial in my laboratory. Lets face it folks this isn't the easiest nor most interesting topic to write about. Job well done DR. Kinter. I only have one criticism, there should have been more photos and illustrations. Get your copies quick this will no doubt be on the NewYork times best seller list before long. ... Read more

Standard textbook outlining most spectroscopic techniques as taught at undergraduate level. However, contains an embarrassingly dated treatment of mass spectrometry which can not have been rewritten since the 1970s. No mention of the biggest MS techniques in use today (electrospray and MALDI), a glaring oversight especially in light of Fenn & Tanaka winning Nobel Prizes in 2002 for just these developments. And time-of-flight instruments having a mass range of 5000 and resolution of 200? Several years before this book was published, commercial machines were available with mass ranges well over 100,000 Da and resolutions of 10,000+. Not only poor, but misleading. Overall, a rather derivative book that seems to have been written largely by consultation of more authoritative work (probably an early edition of Williams & Fleming).

The new edition of Pavis might be the twin to Crews' Organic Structural Analysis. This text discusses the fundamentals of 1H NMR, carbon-13 NMR, infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy. The book also includes a section on 2D NMR. Pavia should not be missed by advanced undergraduate students who pursue research and practicing chemists who need quick reference on interpreting spectra.

This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful.
This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

Biochemical Applications of Infrared Spectroscopy, like most other ACOL (Analytical Chemistry by Open Learning) titles, is a good text for those who wish to learn the basics of FTIR as applied to the analysis of proteins, peptides, lipids, biomembranes, carbohydrates, foods, etc. The book contains chapters dedicated to instrumentation, sampling techniques, spectrum interpretation, quantitative analysis and some applications. Each chapter contains a useful set of questions (answers provided) and there are a few suggested experiments. The book is written at about a senior chemistry undergraduate level but would be useful for those wanting to learn the basics. The sections dedicated to the analysis of proteins and peptides, lipids, biomembranes and pharmaceuticals 'outshine' the others. The nice thing about this book is that it is not merely a 'rehash' of somebodys published work crammed into loosely related chapters (like many other books on the subject). A larger bibliography and references would have made the applications sections better. ... Read more
