The Proceedings in this volume are a refereed selection of presentations from The Third Asia-Pacific EPR/ESR Symposium (APES'01), held in Kobe, Japan from October 29 to November 1, 2001. Participants from 20 countries from Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America presented 210 papers, of which 132 are included here.

These Proceedings are also a blueprint for development of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) / electron spin resonance (ESR) in the Asia-Pacific region in the 21st century. The Symposium reflected a variety of research fields developed over half a century and focuses especially on the most recent developments, such as high-field and high-frequency EPR, which are envisaged to be further developed and applied to various fields in the 21st century.

The aim of this book is to present applications of the Liouville equation for the density operator to the solution of specific atom-field interaction problems. The method consists in representing the incident field by a classical monochromatic wave and treating relaxation by means of phenomenological operators. This method is particularly suitable for studies in the field of laser spectroscopy as it relies upon the fact that laser radiation possesses the properties of coherence, monochromacity, and frequency tenability. Statistics in Spectroscopy, Second Edition, is an expanded and updated version of the original title. The aim of the book is to bridge the gap between the average chemist/spectroscopist and the study of statistics. This second edition differs from the first in that expanded chapters are incorporated to highlight the relationship between elementary statistics and the more advanced concepts of chemometrics.

The book introduces the novice reader to the ideas and concepts of statistics and uses spectroscopic examples to show how these concepts are applied. The advent of instrumentation and methods of data analysis based on multivariate mathematics has created a need to introduce the non-statitician to the ideas, concepts and thought processes of statistics and statisticians. This dissertation describes the development of a special type of silicon detector for 1D-position sensitive X-ray spectroscopy, the multi-anode silicon drift detector (SDD). The SDDs feature very small capacitance, which is independent on the detector size. The ultimate energy resolution spectroscopy can be performed with large SDDs at a relatively fast signal shaping. Indeed a multi-anode linear configuration allows 1D- (or 2D-) position measurements.

The development of a large multi-anode linear SDD for 1D position dependent spectroscopy of soft X-rays has to deal with two key issues: the position dependent loss of charge to adjacent anode pixels and the integration of the front-end p-JFET on the detector chip. The former one is solved by means of the sawtooth concept. The latter issue is realized by detector-electronics compatible process, the SMART700 degree process. NMR of Inorganic and Small Organic Substances
This title has an excellent overview of the fundamental physical principles of NMR with many of the formulae and facts essential for understanding this topic at an introductory level. However, the applications section of this title is out of date. The book maybe useful for the organic and inorganic chemist interested in structure determination research. It is not aimed for the biomedical scientist interested in protein and enzyme or whole tissue analysis. References are adequately listed. ... Read more
