Book Description

The Proceedings in this volume are a refereed selection of presentations from The Third Asia-Pacific EPR/ESR Symposium (APES'01), held in Kobe, Japan from October 29 to November 1, 2001. Participants from 20 countries from Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America presented 210 papers, of which 132 are included here.

These Proceedings are also a blueprint for development of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) / electron spin resonance (ESR) in the Asia-Pacific region in the 21st century. The Symposium reflected a variety of research fields developed over half a century and focuses especially on the most recent developments, such as high-field and high-frequency EPR, which are envisaged to be further developed and applied to various fields in the 21st century.

All sessions consisted of Plenary, Invited and Contributed presentations. The Plenary presentations aimed at summarizing the overall developments. Invited presentations, r ... Read more

Book Description

The aim of this book is to present applications of the Liouville equation for the density operator to the solution of specific atom-field interaction problems. The method consists in representing the incident field by a classical monochromatic wave and treating relaxation by means of phenomenological operators. This method is particularly suitable for studies in the field of laser spectroscopy as it relies upon the fact that laser radiation possesses the properties of coherence, monochromacity, and frequency tenability. Moreover, laser allow sources to reach high where saturation and multiphoton transitions come into play, which can be most conveniently discussed by this same method as will be shown in detail in this treatise. ... Book Description

Statistics in Spectroscopy, Second Edition, is an expanded and updated version of the original title. The aim of the book is to bridge the gap between the average chemist/spectroscopist and the study of statistics. This second edition differs from the first in that expanded chapters are incorporated to highlight the relationship between elementary statistics and the more advanced concepts of chemometrics.

The book introduces the novice reader to the ideas and concepts of statistics and uses spectroscopic examples to show how these concepts are applied. The advent of instrumentation and methods of data analysis based on multivariate mathematics has created a need to introduce the non-statitician to the ideas, concepts and thought processes of statistics and statisticians. Several key statistical concepts are introduced through the use of computer programs. The new sections on chemometrics include an exercise showing that there is a deep and fundamental connection between the two, supposedly different, disciplines of statistics and chemometrics.

Serves as a primer for all chemists who need to know more about statistical analysis

Written in a readable style with minimal mathematics

Developed from the popular series of the same name first published in Spectroscopy magazine

Book Description

This dissertation describes the development of a special type of silicon detector for 1D-position sensitive X-ray spectroscopy, the multi-anode silicon drift detector (SDD). The SDDs feature very small capacitance, which is independent on the detector size. The ultimate energy resolution spectroscopy can be performed with large SDDs at a relatively fast signal shaping. Indeed a multi-anode linear configuration allows 1D- (or 2D-) position measurements.

The development of a large multi-anode linear SDD for 1D position dependent spectroscopy of soft X-rays has to deal with two key issues: the position dependent loss of charge to adjacent anode pixels and the integration of the front-end p-JFET on the detector chip. The former one is solved by means of the sawtooth concept. The latter issue is realized by detector-electronics compatible process, the SMART700 degree process. The investigations of SDD processing aiming at a small leakage current at high processing temperatures are presented as well. ... Read more

Book Description

This multi-author, edited volume includes chapters which deal with both basic and highly complex applications. Glow discharge devices are now being used in very novel ways for the analysis of liquids and gases, including molecular species detection and identification, an area that was beyond the perceived scope of applicability just ten years ago. It is expected that the next decade will see a growth in the interest and application of glow discharge devices far surpassing the expectations of the last century.

Book Description

In the 1920s, when quantum mechanics was in its infancy, chemists and solid state physicists had little choice but to manipulate unwieldy equations to determine the properties of even the simplest molecules. When mathematicians turned their attention to the equations of quantum mechanics, they discovered that these could be expressed in terms of group theory, and from group theory it was a short step to operator methods.

This important development lay largely dormant until this book was originally published in 1963. In this pathbreaking publication, Brian Judd made the operator techniques of mathematicians comprehensible to physicists and chemists. He extended the existing methods so that they could handle heavier, more complex molecules and calculate their energy levels, and from there, it was another short step to the mathematical analysis of spectra. This book provides a first-class introduction to continuous groups for physicists and chemists. Although first written from the perspective of atomic spectroscopy, its major topics and methods will appeal to anyone who has an interest in understanding particle theories of nuclear physics. ... Book Description

The Handbook of Organic Compounds: NIR, IR, Raman, and UV-Vis Spectra Featuring Polymers and Surfactants represents a compendium of practical spectroscopic methodology, comprehensive reviews, and basic information for organic materials, surfactants, and polymer spectra covering the Ultraviolet, Visible, Near Infrared, Infrared, Raman and Dielectric measurement techniques. This set represents a complementary organic compound handbook to the Nyquist inorganic handbook, published in 1996. This set comprises the first comprehensive multi-volume handbook to provide basic coverage for UV-Vis, 4th overtone NIR, 3rd overtone NIR, NIR, Infrared, Raman spectra, and Dielectric data for common organic compounds, polymers, surfactants, contaminants, and inorganic materials commonly encountered in the laboratory. The text includes a description and reviewsof interpretive and chemometric techniques used for spectral data analysis. The spectra included within the atlas are useful for identification purposes as well as pedagogical for the instruction of the various interpretive and data processing methods discussed. This work is designed to be of help to students and vibrational spectroscopists in their efforts of daily spectral interpretation and data processing of organic spectra, polymers, and surfactants. All spectra are presented in wavenumber and transmittance, with the addition of ultraviolet, visible, 4th overtone NIR, 3rd overtone NIR, and NIR spectra also represented in nanometers and absorbance space. In addition, some Horizontal infrared ATR spectra are presented in wavenumber and absorbance space. All spectra are shown with essential peaks labeled in their respective units. The material in this handbook was contributed to by several individuals, and comments were received from a variety of prominent workers in the field of molecular spectroscopy. This type of handbook
project is a daunting task. This Handbook can provide a valuable reference for the daily activities of students and professionals working in modern molecular spectroscopy laboratories.

Book Description

This book describes the benefits of using a new type of solid-state multichannel detector, i.e., the charge-transfer device, as it is used for chemical imaging and analysis.
About the authors: M. Bonner Denton, co-editor, is the czar of charge- transfer devices. He is currently President of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. Jonathan Sweedler, co-editor, is the recipient of many awards recognizing his excellent contributions (publications and patents) in the field of charge-transfer device detectors The publishing of this book coincides with the introduction by numerous commercial vendors of complete spectroscopy systems which include charge-transfer devices (CTD).
This book points to the potential uses of CTD. Essentially CTDs allow chemists to get a great deal more out of their instruments; they allow chemists to avoid false positive (and false negative) results.
CTDs are the future way in all kinds of spectroscopic instrumentation, including Raman, atomic emission and luminescence spectroscopy, atomic source diagnostics, and planar chromatography.
