Book Description

This book is a logical, step-by-step guide to identification of organic compounds by mass spectrometry. The book is organized into chapters covering the major types of organic compounds, including alcohols, acids and esters, aldehydes and ketones, ethers, hydrocarbons, halogenated compounds, amines and amides, and sulfur-containing compounds. In each chapter, the mechanisms of the major fragmentation pathways are discussed, with reference to several simple sample compounds. By teaching the user to recognize typical fragmentations, the book removes the need to search databases, often limited, of electronic spectra. Key features of the book include:
* 200 representative spectra of common organic compounds
* Functional group approach to mass spectra interpretation
* Appendix of 'unknown' spectra with step-by-step guide to identification
This book is a must for anyone who needs to identify organic molecules by mass spectrometry but does not need to know the detailed workings of a mass spectrometer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good practical book:
This book is an excellent practical approach to common problems of solving structures. I think it's really good.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good supplement
I had to buy this book for a Spectroscopy class, and I came to Amazon looking to see if there is an answer book too (which i don't think exists). Don't let the book discription fool you... The questions are "graded" meaning they progressively get more difficult. The questions are NOT answered, which would have been very helpful. If you are looking for a VERY BASIC explination to spectral chemistry, and a bunch of problems, get this book. If you want to really know what spectral chem is all about try "Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Execellent Practical Virbation Manual
This is an excellent book for people faced with practical vibration problems. The book is a well-written to this topic. Focus is on rotating machinery, and data acquistion, filtering, etc. This is the best 1st book on vibration diagnosing I've found yet. A definite recommend to buy

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst vibration spectrum analysis book
I borrow this book from Uni, of Washington and found out that this book is lack of both practical and theoritical inf. The writing of the book is so poor and minimum examples of real data that I stopped short of completing the book. Worst for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pratical handbook
This is one of the most useful books in my collection. Theory where appropriate. But focus is practical application and examples from the authors extensive experience. Buy this book if you want to understand vibration spectrums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Herramienta práctica de campo

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comment From the Author
I apologize for rating my own book, but it was the only way I could get a comment placed on the book's webpage.

I feel compelled to respond, point by point, to the poor rating the reviewer from NY, NY has given my book.

Reviewer: "The representation of spectra is of very poor quality and appears as images printed on a dot-matrix printer or a plotter."

Response: All spectra were printed on a modern, 600 DPI, laser printer. All spectra are plotted in landscape format (parallel to the book's binding) to maximize the size of the spectrum for easy viewing. Peak positions are clearly marked, and the assignment of relevant peaks is included in a table at the bottom of each spectrum. The chemical structure and formula for each compound is clearly marked. I have given much thought to the format and layout of the spectra in the book to supply the most information in an easy-to-read format.

Reviewer: "Nowhere does the author provide an example of how to use his systematic approach to interpret spectra or expound on why these steps are critical."

Response: There are 33 problem spectra in the book. The solution to these problems, including a complete chemical structure and table with correct peak assignments, is given in Appendix II of the book (pages 208 to 242). Each one of these problem solutions is an example of the systematic approach to interpretation I discuss in Chapter 1, and the importance of the steps is expounded upon in detail in these problem solutions as well. Any reader who works through the problems will discover this.

Reviewer: "The author takes a "no math" approach and in addition to limiting the rigor of the material he makes several misleading statements in his explanation of molecular vibrations and vibrational spectra."

Response: There is plenty of math in the book, there are 16 equations in Chapter 1 alone, which support the discussion of RELEVANT theory. There is no calculus or matrix algebra in the book...intentionally. One does not need to know how to design a transmission to drive a car. By analogy: One does not need a knowledge of advanced mathematics to be able to interpret infrared spectra. I have included as much rigor as I think is necessary for the intended audience to be able to interpret spectra. I gladly refer readers to more advanced books if they want more details on theory. As far as technical errors are concerned, the entire book has been reviewed by several people in this field, and is as free of technical errors as I can make it. If the reviewer believes there are technical errors in the book, I would be happy to discuss those with him. My e-mail address is printed in the front of the book.

In Conclusion... Thousands of students have used this book in the short courses I teach for a living. Their response to the book is overwhelmingly enthusiastic and positive...and I have the course evaluation forms to back this up. Seasoned academics may not care for my approach to the subject, but my experience with my students convinces me that for its intended audience, this book serves its purpose well.

In closing, another unsolicited third party review:

"This clearly written book...is a useful addition...Smith's approach is practical; a short theoretical introduction is followed by chapters on compounds...plus a good index and glossary. A generous assortment of illustrations of spectra and problems with solutions..." H. Goldwhite, Cal-State Los Angeles -Choice Magazine, June 1999

1-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time
This book is in its first edition and originated from a short course the author has taught for six years. This text is targeted at the laboratory technician or undergraduate that currently has little or no familiarity with infrared spectroscopy, but needs to interpret spectra. The author takes a "no math" approach and in addition to limiting the rigor of the material he makes several misleading statements in his explanation of molecular vibrations and vibrational spectra. Nowhere does the author provide an example of how to use his systematic approach to interpret spectra or expound on why these steps are critical. The representation of spectra is of very poor quality and appears as images printed on a dot-matrix printer or a plotter. While the author's short course may be mature, its representation in this text is not. The model he presents is sound in principle, but it should be reinforced throughout the material to illustrate the art of spectral interpretation. There are other more comprehensive texts on interpreting vibrational spectra currently available which remain a better resource for both novice and seasoned spectroscopists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Organic spectroscopy bible
This is the best organic spectroscopy book I have ever found. If you have to take any kind of organic spec class, this is definitely a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have
If you are taking a class in organic spectroscopy or use NMR all the time in your lab, then this book is a must. Gives you table after table of chemical shifts for C-13 NMR, H1-NMR, IR, Mass Spec, and UV/Vis. It also comes with a very useful NMR Predictor CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you will find in this book is ...
The present data collection is intended to serve as an aid in the interpretation of molecular spectra for the elucidation and confirmation of the structure of organic compounds. It consists of reference data, spectra, and empirical correlations from 13C and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), mass, and ultraviolet-visible (UV/vis) spectroscopy. It is to be viewed as a supplement to textbooks and specific reference works dealing with these spectroscopic techniques. The use of this book to interpret spectra only requires the knowledge of basic principles of the techniques, but its content is structured in a way that it will serve as a reference book also to specialists. Chapters 2 and 3 contain Summary Tables and combined tables of the most relevant spectral characteristics of structural elements. While Chapter 2 is organized according to the different spectroscopic techniques, Chapter 3 provides for each class of structural elements spectroscopic information obtained with various techniques. These two chapters should assist users that are less familiar with spectra interpretation to identify the classes of structural elements present in samples of their interest. The following four chapters cover data from 13C NMR, 1H NMR, IR, and mass spectroscopy, and are ordered exactly in the same manner by compound types. These cover the various skeletons (alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alicyclic, aromatic, and heteroaromatic), the most important substituents (halogen, single-bonded oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and carbonyl), and some specific compound classes (miscellaneous compounds and natural products). Finally, a spectra collection of common solvents, auxiliary compounds (such as matrix materials and references) and commonly found impurities is provided for each method. Not only the strictly analogous order of the data but also the optical marks on the edge of the pages help fast cross-referencing between the various spectroscopic techniques. Although currently, UV/vis spectroscopy is only marginally relevant to structure elucidation, its importance might increase by the advent of high throughput analyses. Also, the reference data presented in Chapter 8 are useful in connection with optical sensors and the widely applied UV/vis detectors in chromatography and electrophoresis. Since a large part of the tabulated data either comes from our own measurements or is based on a large body of literature data, comprehensive references to published sources are generally not included. Whenever possible, the data refers to conventional modes and conditions of measurement. For example, unless the solvent is indicated, the NMR chemical shifts were determined usually with deuterochloroform or carbon tetrachloride as solvent. Likewise, the IR spectra were measured using solvents of low polarity, such as chloroform or carbon disulfide. Mass spectral data were recorded with electron impact ionization at 70 eV. While retaining the basic structure of the previous editions, numerous new entries have been added. Altogether, the amount of data has been more than doubled. The section on mass spectrometry (MS) is entirely new and contains a unique collection of fragmentation rules for the various compound classes. As a new feature, prototype IR spectra for each class of compounds schematically show the analytically relevant absorption bands. The Combination Tables of the earlier editions have been extended and arranged in two chapters, the first organized according to band positions and the second according to compound classes. The enclosed compact disc contains programs for estimating 13C and 1H chemical shifts of organic compounds containing up to 15 non-hydrogen atoms. Both programs are available for Windows and Macintosh systems and require a Java environment for the graphical structure input. Technical details about the requirements and installation procedures are given in the corresponding ReadMe files. Extensive help files are available as part of the programs. In addition, the structure generator Assemble 2.0 (also limited to 15 non-hydrogen atoms) is available for Windows systems. Based on the molecular formula and available structural information, it is capable of generating all possible structural isomers. An extensive hypertext based tutorial describes its main features. It is especially recommended as a quality control tool to check if alternative solutions that also agree with the experimental data have gone unnoticed. [Why did I give 5 points: Because this book is absolutely unique in its form, and because the "not rated" option did not work, preventing me from being more modest.] ... Read more

Book Description

Two specialized new instruments for ESO's VLT, VISIR and CRIRES, spawned the idea for this workshop. CRIRES is a dedicated very high resolution infrared spectrograph; VISIR features a high resolution spectroscopic mode. Together, the instruments combine the sensitivity of an 8m-telescope with the now well-established reliability of VLT-facility instruments. High resolution here means that lines in cool stellar atmospheres and HII-regions can be resolved. The astrophysical topics discussed in this rather specialized workshop range from the inner solar system to active galactic nuclei. There are many possibilities for new discoveries with these instruments, but the unique capability, which becomes available through high-resolution infrared spectroscopy, is the observation of molecular rotational-vibrational transitions in many astrophysical environments. Particularly interesting and surprising in this context, many papers on modeling and laboratory spectroscopy at the workshop appear to indicate that astronomical observations are lagging a bit behind in this field. The papers are an interesting mix of reports from existing high resolution facilities, reports on modeling efforts of synthetic spectra and reports on laboratory spectra. In this sense, a fruitful exchange between molecular physics and astronomy was again accomplished and is documented in this volume. ... Read more

Book Description

This book offers a concise introduction to one of the most important modern analytical methods. Accordingly, its emphasis is on practical guidance. Discussion of the underlying theory is restricted to the bare minimum.

It gives practical instruction in the operation of spectrometers, sample preparation and measurement techniques. Carefully selected examples guide readers in the qualitative interpretation of spectra and in the application of computers, and provide an insight into the latest developments in the field. The book also includes sections on quantitative determination and specialist applications, plus references to the more advanced literature. It is organized such that individual chapters can be studied independently of each other.

A solid introduction to practical IR spectroscopy for both students and practitioners.
