The Best Book of its Type
Even if beginning with only an introductory understanding of quantum mechanics, this excellent book will allow you to understand most major branches of spectroscopy. The chapters are organized to include reasonable amounts of both theory and show real spectra to help use the theory in the context of real research. One of the earlier chapters includes a review/primer on group theory and the remaining chapters can be understood with the group theory presented in that chapter. This book is therefore suitable as a text and is also very usefull as a reference.

Despite the fact that there are several other books available dealing with the same subject, this book covers, in some chapters, recent state-of-the-art techniques which can't be found that way in other monographs but have gained in importance in recent years. The book is suited for undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics or chemistry, and for scientists who are planning to become active in this research area. I beleive that this book can provide useful illustrations for instructors in these fields who have to teach the subject to graduate or PhD students. Perfect Reference on Spectroscopy
The undergraduate physical chemistry lab course required us to perform at least 2 experiments on spectroscopy. Experiments could be drawn from infrared spectra, electronic-vibrational absorption spectrum, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility of transition metal ions in solution.

While introductory physical (quantum) chemistry course only gives students an overview of spectroscopy and its applications, this book provides excellent information about different types of spectroscopy and their usages in laboratory. Many will find it very useful to consult this book before proceeding on spectroscopy experiments. It will also serve as a reference tool for practicing chemists and professionals who need a refresher in the subject.
