Book Description

This book is written for graduate students just beginning research, for theorists curious about what experimentalists actually can and do measure, and for experimentalists bewildered by theory. It is a guide for potential users of spectroscopic data, and uses language and concepts that bridge the frequency-and time-domain spectroscopic communities.

Key topics, concepts, and techniques include: the assignment of simple spectra, basic experimental techniques, definition of Born-Oppenheimer and angular momentum basis sets and the associated spectroscopic energy level patterns (Hund's cases), construction of effective Hamiltonian matrices to represent both spectra and dynamics, terms neglected in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (situations intermediate between Hund's cases, spectroscopic perturbations), nonlinear least squares fitting, calculation and interpretation of coupling terms, semi-classical (WKB) approximation, transition intensities and interference effects, direct photofragmentation (dissociation and ionization) and indirect photofragmentation (predissociation and autoionization) processes, visualization of intramolecular dynamics, quantum beats and wavepackets, treatment of decaying quasi-eigenstates using a complex Heff model, and concluding with some examples of polyatomic molecule dynamics.

Students will discover that there is a fascinating world of cause-and-effect localized dynamics concealed beyond the reduction of spectra to archival molecular constants and the exact ab initio computation of molecular properties.Professional spectroscopists, kinetics, ab initio theorists will appreciate the practical, simplified-model, and rigorous theoretical approaches discussed in this book.

Key Features:

• A fundamental reference for all spectra of small, gas-phase molecules.

• It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the electronic spectroscopy and dynamics of diatomic molecules.

• The authors pioneered the development of many of the experimental methods, concepts, models, and computational schemes described in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book of its Type
Even if beginning with only an introductory understanding of quantum mechanics, this excellent book will allow you to understand most major branches of spectroscopy. The chapters are organized to include reasonable amounts of both theory and show real spectra to help use the theory in the context of real research. One of the earlier chapters includes a review/primer on group theory and the remaining chapters can be understood with the group theory presented in that chapter. This book is therefore suitable as a text and is also very usefull as a reference.

Book Description

Remarkably sustained advances in the development of new lasers and their applications in spectroscopy have prompted this revised and expanded edition of the highly successful Introduction to Laser Spectroscopy, first published in 1995. In the new edition the editors have preserved the basic concept and structure, with the involvement of some new authors - all recognized experts in laser spectroscopy. Each chapter addresses a different technique, providing a review and analysis of the current status, and reporting some of the latest achievements. With the key formulas and methods detailed in many sections, this text represents a practicable handbook of its subject. It will be a valuable tool both for specialists to keep abreast of developments and for newcomers to the field needing an accessible introduction to specific methods of laser spectroscopy - and also as a resource for primary references.

The first two chapters lay out the technical details of the main laser systems now employed for spectroscopy, and then the principles and applications of absorption and fluorescence measurements. Following a description of Raman scattering, the development of pump-probe techniques is then traced. The next chapters deal more specifically with applications of laser-induced fluorescence, first addressing diagnostics for biochemical systems, and then applications to ordered systems. The use of tunable infrared lasers for the spectroscopy of transient species is discussed in the next chapter, followed by an introduction to optical nonlinearity focusing on its surface applications. The utilisation of nonlinear optics for tunable ultraviolet generation is then described and the penultimate chapter gives a description of femtosecond laser ionisation applied in mass spectrometry. The book concludes with a survey of the environmental applications of laser remote sensing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taken from ChemPhysChem; October 2003
This book not only gives an overview of the basic principles but also reports about novelties in this research area mainly due to the development of new lasers. Despite the fact that there are several other books available dealing with the same subject, this book covers, in some chapters, recent state-of-the-art techniques which can't be found that way in other monographs but have gained in importance in recent years. The book is suited for undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics or chemistry, and for scientists who are planning to become active in this research area. I beleive that this book can provide useful illustrations for instructors in these fields who have to teach the subject to graduate or PhD students. For every reader this book provides a pedagogical approach to this research field which has gained or will still gain more and more importance in the recent or upcoming years, respectively.

Book Description

The basics of modern, compact GC-MS systems have barely changed during the last 20 years. Ion sources still become contaminated and have to be cleaned. Leaks occur and, as ever, the gas chromatograph is the most frequent source of troubles. A new and more worrisome trend, however, is that the manuals are becoming shorter and shorter. Unfortunately also the knowledge of the service staff seems to decrease. Experts with years of experience are increasingly difficult to find.
This book aims to compensate this by giving answers to questions such as:
How does my mass spectrometer work?
What types of fault can show up and how do I detect them?
How must separation and detection be adapted to each other?
Which pitfalls can be avoided when elucidating structures and quantifying compounds?
This book is intended to help newcomers from making their first steps into this rather complex technique to the development of highly demanding methods for trace analysis. Advanced users also find much practical advice which will help to improve their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Reference on Spectroscopy
The undergraduate physical chemistry lab course required us to perform at least 2 experiments on spectroscopy. Experiments could be drawn from infrared spectra, electronic-vibrational absorption spectrum, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility of transition metal ions in solution.

While introductory physical (quantum) chemistry course only gives students an overview of spectroscopy and its applications, this book provides excellent information about different types of spectroscopy and their usages in laboratory. Many will find it very useful to consult this book before proceeding on spectroscopy experiments. It will also serve as a reference tool for practicing chemists and professionals who need a refresher in the subject.

It covers basic spectroscopy techniques, vibrational spectroscopy, rotational spectroscopy, infrared, Raman on diatomic molecules and polyatomic molecules. One great tool.
