Book Description

This important book presents a unified formulation from first principles of the Hamiltonian and statistical mechanics of metallic and insulating crystals, amorphous solids, and liquids. Extensive comparison of theory and experiment provides an accurate understanding of the statistical properties of phonons, electrons, and phonon-phonon and electron-phonon interactions in elemental crystals and liquids. Questions are posed along the following lines: What is the "best" theory for a given property? How accurate is a good theory? What information is gained by a comparison of theory and experiment? How accurate is a good experiment? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars what is the purpose of this book?
Reading this book created mixed feelings.

It is nice to see books of course in the very important
but relatively little studied case of mechanical properties
of solids and liquids (as oposed to elecrical properties).

The book starts promisingly by claiming a first priciples
discussion. However the discussions following are highly
incomplete (sketchy) with continuous references to
a previous book by the author. The level of detail
is dissapointing and the author seems to address experts
in his field rather than students.

I think you can safely go over this book; the Born Huang
book is much more complete and useful.

Overall, the book misses completely its educational purpose;
it might be useful to experts in the field, but then they
can always read a plethora of reviews in research journals
(for free). ... Read more

Book Description

Biological Applications of Raman Spectroscopy Volume 1: Raman Spectra and the Conformations of Biological Macromolecules Edited by Thomas G. Spiro The first of the landmark volumes focusing on biological Raman applications, Volume 1 provides an incisive look at the current research surrounding the conformations of biological macromolecules. Volume 1 considers the varieties of macromolecules—proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids—in isolation and in the organized biological assemblies of ocular lenses, viruses, and membranes. The collective vibrational modes of macromolecules are considered theoretically, and there is a review of the promising area of vibrational optical activity. 1987 (0 471-81573-X) 352 pp. Volume 2: Resonance Raman Spectra of Polyenes and Aromatics The importance of the resonance Raman effect for biological applications is that it can provide dramatically increased sensitivity and selectivity The theory of the effect is presented in Volume 2, which also explores applications to rhodopsin, to the purine and pyrimidine bases of nucleic acids, to the peptide backbone and chromophoric side chains of proteins, to flavins, and, finally, to the introduction of resonance Raman labels into biological systems. 1987 (0 471-81574-8) 367 pp. Volume 3: Resonance Raman Spectra of Heme and Metalloproteins Heme proteins have provided an especially rich opportunity for Raman studies. Volume 3 describes in detail various aspects of work in this area, including applications to chlorophylls and nonheme metalloproteins. Coverage includes heme protein structure and the iron-histidine stretching mode; Raman scattering by cytochrome oxidase and by heme a model compounds; chlorophylls and the photosynthetic membrane; resonance Raman spectroscopy of blue copper proteins; and nonheme respiratory proteins. 1988 (0 471-81575-6) 565 pp. ... Book Description

The first systematic summary of biophysical mass spectrometry techniques

Recent advances in mass spectrometry (MS) have pushed the frontiers of analytical chemistry into the biophysical laboratory. As a result, the biophysical community's acceptance of MS-based methods, used to study protein higher-order structure and dynamics, has accelerated the expansion of biophysical MS.

Despite this growing trend, until now no single text has presented the full array of MS-based experimental techniques and strategies for biophysics. Mass Spectrometry in Biophysics expertly closes this gap in the literature.

Covering the theoretical background and technical aspects of each method, this much-needed reference offers an unparalleled overview of the current state of biophysical MS. Mass Spectrometry in Biophysics begins with a helpful discussion of general biophysical concepts and MS-related techniques.Subsequent chapters address:

  • Modern spectrometric hardware
  • High-order structure and dynamics as probed by various MS-based methods
  • Techniques used to study structure and behavior of non-native protein states that become populated under denaturing conditions
  • Kinetic aspects of protein folding and enzyme catalysis
  • MS-based methods used to extract quantitative information on protein-ligand interactions
  • Relation of MS-based techniques to other experimental tools
  • Biomolecular properties in the gas phase

Fully referenced and containing a helpful appendix on the physics of electrospray mass spectrometry, Mass Spectrometry in Biophysics also offers a compelling look at the current challenges facing biomolecular MS and the potential applications that will likely shape its future. ... Read more

Book Description

The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users' signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA. The aim of this book is to edit the ensemble of the newest contributions and research results in this new field that have been presented during the 4th International Workshop on Multi-Carrier Spread-Spectrum (MC-SS 2003), held in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. ... Book Description

In Vivo NMR Spectroscopy Robin A. de Graaf Department of in vivo NMR, Utrecht University, The Netherlands This is the first book in the field of in vivo NMR to cover in depth the technical and basic biophysical aspects of the technique. The contents of the book are appropriate to both beginners and experienced users of in vivo NMR spectroscopy. The book has also a practical setup, allowing readers to incorporate the presented concepts into their own MR research. An extensive treatment of radiofrequency pulses is given, together with several tables and recipes for their generation. A practical approach is followed in describing spatial localization and the pros and cons of all known water-suppression techniques. In addition, 2-D NMR, magnetic resonance imaging, spectroscopic imaging, spectral editing and many basic principles are explained and illustrated using practical examples. Several tables containing basic biophysical information, such as resonance frequencies, diffusion coefficients, relaxation constants, and absolute concentrations are also presented. The educational and practical character of this book makes it ideal for use in training courses at large research institutes and academic hospitals. In general, all those involved in fundamental and/or diagnostic in vivo NMR will find this book useful. This can range from people working in dedicated in vivo NMR institutes to radiologists working in hospitals. Also, those who want to broaden their knowledge on the concepts of NMR, such as researchers in high-resolution NMR, neurology, physiology, chemistry, and medical biology will benefit greatly from this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars essential MR lab companion
This book is essential to the library of any MR lab that has an interest in in vivo MR spectroscopy, especially on the basic science level. The beginner will find a good survey of the scope of topics currently under investigation in the basic science literature. The expert will find this book especially useful in its nuts-and-bolts approach, which translates topics from literature to scanner well. This book is less appropriate for physicians in that it does not present information relevant to today's clinical practice. This book was an invaluable reference throughout my PhD training. Because small-animal and vertical bore magnets frequently have less user-friendly instrumentation and packaged support programming than clinical scanners, a more hands-on understanding of basic in vivo MR and all its components is frequently required. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good book with programming
as i feel this book covers the fundamentals needed for
proper understanding of wavelets. then it clearely brings
out the topics such as mra, filter bank approaches along
with matlab programs using which one can actually generate
and feel the wavelet concept. in this way the book creates
interest in the reader. Along with this one can also
use wavelets by gopinath and barrus or by goswami.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is well thought out and "clear" in explanations.
First let me say this is an excellent book for a graduate class about Wavelets! As a Doctoral Student I have limited funds, but this book I had to purchase, and did. I've used Wickerhauser, Strang & Nguyen, Cohen, and other texts for my references but yours is well thought out and "clear". The chapter about Over Complete Wavelets and the Matlab GUI makes this a complete guide to wavelets. ... Read more
