Book Description

Scattering experiments, using X-ray, light and neutron sources (in historical order) are key techniques for studying structure and dynamics in systems containing colliods, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules, summarized here as soft condensed matter. The education in this field in Europe is very heterogeneous and frequently inadequate, which severely limits an efficient use of these methods, especially at large-scale facilities. The series of "Bombannes" schools and the completely revised and updated second edition of the lecture notes are devoted to a practical approach to current methodology of static and dynamic techiques. Basic information on data interpretation, on the complementarity of the different types of radiation, as well as information on recent applications and developments is presented. The aim is to avoid over - as well as under-exploitation of data. ... Read more

Book Description

Clearly structured, easy to read and optimal to understand, this extensive compendium fills the gap between textbooks devoted to either spectra interpretation or basic physical principles. The original Chinese editions have already sold over 18,500 copies, and the material is taken from the latest literature from around the world, plus technical information provided by the manufacturers of spectroscopic instruments.
Alongside basic methods, Professor Ning presents up-to-date developments in NMR, MS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, such as pulsed-field gradient technique, LC-NMR, and DOSY. He stresses the application of spectroscopic methods, interpreting them in great detail and depth since most of the selected spectra may be applied to practical work, as well as summarizing the rules for their interpretation. He also incorporates his original ideas, including a comparison of the common points in different spectroscopic techniques.
This monograph features a unique structure, a typical example being the discussion of 2D NMR starting from pulse sequence units, which construct various pulse sequences for related 2D NMR. A complete chapter deals with the determination of configurations and conformations of organic compounds and even biological molecules from the viewpoint of spectroscopic methodologies, while one whole section is dedicated to the interpretation of mass spectra produced by soft ionization techniques.
The principles of mass analyzers, especially the ion trap, are discussed in great depth, together with a concise summary of the MS fragmentation and rearrangement of common compounds, allowing readers to easily predict related mass spectrometric reactions. All the three kinds of library retrieval of mass spectra are presented in detail, together with recent developments in molecular vibration spectroscopy. The whole is rounded off with several appendices, including a subject index for rapid reference.
With a foreword by the Nobel prizewinner, Richard R. Ernst.

Book Description

Photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy differs from traditional infrared spectroscopy in one important way: in its most common implementation, a microphone is used to detect acoustic waves that result from absorption of infrared radiation by a sample. In other words, no optical detector is required to quantify the amount of incident radiation taken up by the sample. This gas-microphone method is one of a series of photoacoustic and photothermal techniques now being used for characterization and analysis of solids, liquids, and gases. Photoacoustic Infrared Spectroscopy represents the most comprehensive resource on this important, emerging technique. Kirk Michaelian’s trenchant study serves as both a text and reference for a broad community of academic and industrial scientists conducting extensive research and applications in photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy. Chapters include:

  • Evolution of Photoacoustic Infrared Spectroscopy
  • Experimental Methods
  • Depth Profiling
  • Numerical Methods
  • Applications of Photoacoustic Infrared Spectroscopy
  • Quantitative Analysis
  • Special Topics
Physicists, chemists, and spectroscopists in both academic and industrial laboratories, polymer and organic chemists, analysts in industry, forensic and government laboratories, and materials scientists will find Photoacoustic Infrared Spectroscopy to be a vital resource. ... Read more

Book Description

Guide to Spectroscopic Identification of Organic Compounds is a practical "how-to" book with a general problem-solving algorithm for determining the structure of a molecule from complementary spectra or spectral data obtained from MS, IR, NMR, or UV spectrophotometers. Representative compounds are analyzed and examples are solved. Solutions are eclectic, ranging from simple and straightforward to complex. A picture of the relationship of structure to physical properties, as well as to spectral features, is provided. Compounds and their derivatives, structural isomers, straight-chain molecules, and aromatics illustrate predominant features exhibited by different functional groups. Practice problems are also included. Guide to Spectroscopic Identification of Organic Compounds is a helpful and convenient tool for the analyst in interpreting organic spectra. It may serve as a companion to any organic textbook or as a spectroscopy reference; its size allows practitioners to carry it along when other tools might be cumbersome or expensive. ... Read more

Book Description

Over recent years, no other technique has grown to such importance as that of NMR spectroscopy. It is used in all branches of science where precise structural determination is required and where the nature of interactions and reactions in solution is being studied. Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy has established itself as a means for the specialist and non-specialist alike to become familiar with new applications of the technique in all branches of chemistry, including biochemistry and pharmaceutics.

Volume 41 of Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy consists of four reports covering diverse areas of molecular science. The first one is Cobalt-59 NMR Spectroscopy by J.C.C. Chan and S.C.F. Au-Yeung. Following this there is an account of Advances in Theoretical and Physical Aspects of Spin-Spin Coupling Constants by R.H. Contreras, J.E. Peralta, C.G. Giribet, M.C. Ruiz de Azua and J.C. Facelli. The third contribution is by S. Dusold and A. Sebald on Dipolar Recoupling under Magic-Angle-Spinning Conditions. The final chapter relates to the Characterization of Porous Media using NMR Methods by P.J. Berrie.

Book Description

The vast progress made in the investigation of biomolecules using NMR has only recently been rewarded with the Nobel Prize for Kurt Wüthrich. Edited by a former coworker of Wüthrich, this book presents the theoretical background on NMR of biomolecules, plus the use of NMR techniques in determining the structures of proteins and nucleic acids.
BioNMR spectroscopy offers a universal tool for examining the binding of an active substance to its target protein. Its use thereby benefits the rational development of drugs. This interaction can now be investigated in a hitherto unparalleled precision and displayed in 3D - an important prerequisite for the targeted development of new active substances. The latest methods for characterizing substance-receptor complexes are demonstrated backed by many case studies from pharmaceutical research. Thus it comes as no surprise that a large number of the authors are working for leading pharmaceutical companies.
With its successful mixture of basic information and application strategies, coupled with many real-life examples, this is an invaluable guide for both NMR spectroscopists and pharmaceutical researchers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mathematically Intense, but Useful
This book contains a full blown theoretical treatment of how Fourier Transforms are used in spectroscopy. No punches are pulled, its all math, all the time. However, this is not necessarily bad. There has been a crying need in this field for someone to give the full theoretical treatment to this topic, and now it has been done. What I found most useful is that concepts that I understood to be true I now know to be true because the proofs are in this book. Also, despite the math, the authors try to make the book as readable and relevant as possible.
This book is not for beginners, but for anyone with some background in math and spectroscopy, it is good reading. This book is a must have reference for anyone who is serious about FTIR. ... Read more

Book Description

Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption, Volume 1 describes and catalogs available spectral information relevant to how common gases interact with sunlight and other sources of electromagnetic radiation such as x-rays, flames, and plasmas. Photoabsorption is light's reduction in intensity and force when it passes through a column of gas or liquid. This book also includes a large number of data tables and figures that are invaluable to researchers because they help them select exactly which wavelengths to use in their experiments. The further distinguishing aspect of this book is its synthesis across a broad spectrum of wavelengths and compilation of data for a large number of atoms and molecules. ... Read more
