Book Description

Another brand-new title in Barron’s Essential Atlas science series explains principles of mathematics, which is the universal language of all science. This volume opens with a brief, enlightening description of the differing numeric systems devised by various cultures. The multitude of practical applications involving mathematics are then shown and explained, including measurements of weight and volume, monetary calculations, the binary system and its application in computer science, and much more. Architecture is discussed in terms of its fundamental relationship to principles of geometry. The circle, angles, and trigonometric functions are described, and fundamental principles of calculus and probability are touched upon. This easy-to-comprehend volume makes imaginative use of charts and diagrams to explain mathematical reasoning. There are color photos and illustrations on every page. ... Read more

Book Description

The Mathematical Olympiad problems covering the USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO),have been published annually by The Mathematical Association of America's American Mathematics Competitions since 1976. They are presented now for the first time in book form.

The IMO is the world mathematics championship for high school students that takes place annually in a different country. The aims of the IMO are: to discover, encourage and challenge mathematically gifted youngpeople in all countries; to foster friendships betweenmathematicians around the world; and to create an opportunity for the exchange of information on school syllabi and practice throughout theworld.

The USAMO and the Team Selection Test (TST) are the last two stagesof the selection process leading to the identification of the USA team in the International Mathematical Olympiad. The preceding examinations are the AMC 10 or AMC 12 and the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). Participation in the AIME, USAMO, and the TST is by invitation only, based on performance in the preceding exams of the sequence.

Through the AMC contests and the IMO, young gifted mathematicians are identified and recognized while they are still in secondary school.Participation in these competitions provides them with the chance to measure themselves against other exceptional students from all over the world.

The editors present their own carefully written solutions to the problems and provide remarkable solutions developed by the examinationcommittees, contestants, and experts, during or after the contests. They also providea detailed report of the 1995-2000 USAMO/IMOresults and a comprehensive guide to other materials emphasizing advanced problem-solving. This collection of excellent problems and beautifulsolutions is a valuable companion for students who wish to developtheir interest in mathematics outside the school curriculum and todeepen their knowledge ofmathematics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best problems you can find
Creating problems for the mathematical olympiads poses a significant challenge. The problems must be difficult, yet not require complex mathematics and generally be solvable using multiple approaches. In most cases, nothing more than high school mathematics is used, although it usually is applied in a very clever way.
Only eighteen problems appear in the book. The six used for the 29th United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, the six used for the selection of the United States team for the 41st International Mathematical Olympiad and the six problems for the 41st International Mathematical Olympiad. Short hints and then formal solutions for all are given. In general, multiple solutions are given for the problems.
As I read the problems, my response tended to follow the same pattern. On first reading, the problem seemed extremely difficult, but after a bit of pondering, the gist of an approach began emerging. In all cases, the solution is easy to follow and almost always much more succinct than expected. I consider the mathematical olympiad problems to be the highest quality of all that are published and it is a tribute to the contributors. Much credit also needs to be extended to the participants and their coaches, as they truly are scholars of the first magnitude.
I try to read all the MAA books on mathematical olympiad problems. They are truly the best and it makes me proud to be part of a profession that gives people a chance to test themselves against each other. These problems are always well worth reading and I always manage to obtain new mathematical insights when I read them.

Book Description

Raises two important and related issues: the changing social aspects of math and the quality of math schemes and textbooks. Math is no longer a subject studies by intellectuals but has become a subject for study by all children aged 5 to 16 years. The continuing failure of many children in this subject is cause for concern. Dowling critically examines textbooks, and the part they play in children's learning. He clearly shows the reader how to analyze and evaluate textbooks they are currently using. This interrogation of classroom resources has important implications for teaching strategies and for textbook design and use. ... Read more

Book Description

This study guide targets teacher competencies and skills for Math 5-9. You read four years of material between the covers of one study guide. Regardless if your is multiple choice or essay format you will have ample material to reflect upon to do well on these formats.

The majority of XAM study guides have 125 question multiple choice sample tests. the questions are medium to hard in difficulty but reasonable for a trained teacher candidate to answer. Since the questions do highly resemble the real test we are frequently asked if they are formker tests. They are not. If any question from our book appears on the test it would be a coincidence.

Book Description

This book presents an approach to the teaching of mathematics that departs radically from conventional prescription-oriented and management-based methods. It brings together recent developments in such diverse fields as continental and pragmatist philosophy, enactivist thought, critical discourses, cognitive theory, evolution, ecology, and mathematics, and challenges the assumptions that permeate much of mathematics teaching. The discussion focuses on the language used to frame the role of the teacher and is developed around the commonsense distinctions drawn between thought and action, subject and object, individual and collective, fact and fiction, teacher and student, and classroom tasks and real life.
The discussion also addresses the question of how mathematics teaching can be reformed to better suit current academic and social climates. Making use of the theoretical framework of enactivism, the book explores the subject through an account of a middle school teacher's appreciation and understanding of her role. Teaching mathematics, as both the report of this teacher's experience and the discussion make clear, demands an embracing of ambiguity, uncertainty, complexity, and moral responsibility.

Book Description

A century after the United States crossed the threshold into universal secondary education we are crossing a quite different threshold into universal postsecondary education.Consequently, society now expects of higher education what in the early twentieth century it asked of secondary schools, namely, to prepare students for civic and economic life.In contrast to that earlier time, however, our age is dominated by computers and data, not factory assembly lines. These changes in society have created an urgent demand for multifaceted literacy far more sophisticated than what previously served as the foundation of today's curriculum.

This greater demand for higher order competencies is nowhere more apparent than in the area of quantitative literacy (QL).Although no less important for all citizens than fluency in reading and writing, quantitative literacy too often continues to be the province of the few.Indeed, for too long, our educational system has produced a scientific and mathematical elite while failing to nurture the literate citizenry required for robust democracy. As a result, the gap between expert and citizen has widened dangerously, most notably when numbers and data are brought to bear in deciding public and private issues – and one can scarcely think of an issue in contemporary life where this is not the case.

"Achieving Quantitative Literacy: An Urgent Challenge for Higher Education" is a response to this need intended to stimulate and support QL conversations on campuses across the country. Growing out of an interdisciplinary forum held at the National Research Council, it summarizes for postsecondary educators and policy makers the major curricular issues surrounding QL.Experts cited in "Achieving Quantitative Literacy" stress the importance of embedding QL across the curriculum and of providing context for learning mathematics. The report includes findings and recommended responses concerning student preparation, public awareness, recognized benchmarks, effective assessment, and professional support. ...
