5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to parents as well as principals
Having read this book as a parent and a school board member, I am giving it to both the principals in my district. This book explains both many of the things that are done badly in many schools in the country and shows the path for how to do them well. I found the comparisons with the Japanese and Chinese methods of teaching particularly helpful. This book was pleasant to read as well as enlightening in how to promote the effective teaching of mathematics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Review & Reference
I purchased this book a couple of years ago when I was preparing to take the GRE, and I desperately needed some math review. The book was perfect for that purpose, but I've also found myself referring to it many times since then. It's a great reference for all that math you had in high-school and/or college and don't use enough to keep fresh in your mind. I've used it quite a few times at work as well as with some of the classes I've taken in grad school (Computer Science). The only think that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is the lack of an index, which makes it difficult to look up specific topics. The book is small enough and so well organized, though, that that is a minor annoyance.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a better review for accuracy
Lots of good explanations - but also many sidebars which don't help. Biggest problem is lots of errors in the math examples which hopefully will be caught if reprinted:
pg20 - 94 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 (meant to be 96=2x2x2x2x2x3)
pg21 - this time correct prime factorization but still says 94
pg100 - products of 4 & 9 roots mixes addition and multiplication... 3 errors in the step-by-step process; complicated by using yet another "+" when should be "X" in the description afterwards.
pg103 - denominator of final answer should be 5, not 15
Frustrating I've been marking the book up for errors.

helpful math review I recieved a lot out of reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I found this math book to be very well written and very helpful. I used this book to teach myself complex math and simple math for job exams. This is a great choice for a study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review for the GMAT
Covers the vast majority of math material that you will encounter on the GMAT. The author's style is conversational, so this book is especially good for people who are more verbal oriented than math oriented. Explanations are easy to follow but also in a good amount of depth. I especially liked the explanations of how everyday formulas were derived. Much better than just memorizing the formulas. Not a lot of practice problems, so you'll have to get those elsewhere.

Definitely skip the introduction. It will insult your intelligence and make you want to burn the book. Nevertheless, the remaining 18 chapters are solid. ... Read more

Book Description

This volume reports on an empirical study with 70 research mathematicians, 35 females and 35 males. The purpose of the study was to explore how these mathematicians came to know mathematics and to match their descriptions against a theoretical model of coming to know mathematics derived from the literature of the history, philosophy and sociology of science and mathematics. The assumption underlying the research was that, when researching, mathematicians are learning and, consequently, their experiences are valid for less sophisticated learners in classrooms. The study provided major surprises particularly with respect to the mathematical thinking of the mathematicians and to the ways in which they organised their practices. It also contradicted long-standing stereotypes. This book applies the learning from the study to learning and teaching mathematics. It offers a rationale, based on the practices of research mathematicians, to support and encourage recent school-based developments in the learning of mathematics through enquiry. The book will be of interest to mathematicians, mathematics educators, teacher educators (mathematics), and higher degree students of mathematics education. ... Read more

The Clemsons' clear and readable book takes the reader from debates about how children learn and what children know and can do when they start school through to a discussion of how mathematics can be managed in the classroom and how it can be assessed and evaluated. Linking these two parts of the book is a section on the subject of mathematics itself, from which the non-specialist reader can gain a view of what mathematics is, what needs to be thought about in planning and offering a curriculum and the special dilemmas faced in teaching and learning mathematics as a subject. A bank of case studies offers an opportunity to see mathematics in action in a variety of classrooms. ... Read more

Book Description

If you are considering this book, you already appreciate how important it is for your child to get a good start in learning math. Recent research in child development has emphasized the positive effects of early learning. An early exposure to number concepts will enhance your child's cognitive capacity to learn mathematical concepts. The purpose of this book is to assist you as a parent in teaching your child fundamental number concepts at an early age.

Given the importance of early learning in cognitive development, Marshmallow Math begins with number concepts that young children can master before they learn to read and write numbers. The book follows a natural progression of skills that starts with simple counting. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and other mathematical concepts are introduced gradually with each new skill building upon mastered skills. The book also explores other important math concepts including sorting and comparing, telling time, spatial awareness, pattern recognition, geometry, measurement, and reasoning.

Marshmallow Math provides many quick, simple, and fun activities for you and your child to do together. The activities are appropriate for children ranging in age from toddler through to primary school. Hands-on learning and mental math are emphasized over written work and traditional exercises. Many of the activities described in the book involve the use of counting objects such as marshmallows, pennies, or jellybeans. Having physical objects to look at, pick-up, and count will help to make abstract concepts more concrete for your child.

The unique approach set out in Marshmallow Math will help to ensure that your child truly comprehends fundamental number concepts and masters basic math skills. This will give your child both the ability and the confidence to excel in math. ... Read more

Book Description

Probability theory has become a convenient language and a useful tool in many areas of modern analysis. The main purpose of this book is to explore part of this connection concerning the relations between Brownian motion on a manifold and analytical aspects of differential geometry. A dominant theme of the book is the probabilistic interpretation of the curvature of a manifold.

The book begins with a brief review of stochastic differential equations on Euclidean space. After presenting the basics of stochastic analysis on manifolds, the author introduces Brownian motion on a Riemannian manifold and studies the effect of curvature on its behavior. He then applies Brownian motion to geometric problems and vice versa, using many well-known examples, e.g., short-time behavior of the heat kernel on a manifold and probabilistic proofs of the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators. The book concludes with an introduction to stochastic analysis on the path space over a Riemannian manifold. ... Read more

Book Description

In a departure from traditional teaching methods, this text focuses on theory more than computations, relying on independent study. Its material is geared toward aspects of high-school mathematics that promise to prove particularly useful for future studies and work. The first of three chapters deals with sequences, their definitions, and methods of mathematic induction. The next chapter addresses combinations, and the final chapter examines limits through a series of introductory problems, problems related to the definition of limit, and problems related to the computation of limits. Answers and hints to the test problems are provided, and "road signs" appear in the margins, marking passages requiring particular attention. 1969 ed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real pearl!
This book is a rare peak inside one of the best Ph.D. programs in Mathematics in the world. It allows you to try out and test yourself on the same problems that the best young and aspiring mathematicians are testing themselves.

The problems are neatly arranged by subject and in increasing level of difficulty, and the solutions, are not only beautifully
written, but somewhat surprising and unexpected for a seasoned student. I pull mine out of the shelf on the rainy days and try a few more, and when I get one, I really savour it!

5-0 out of 5 stars What it is
The books is a collection of problems of the Preliminary Exam at the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics at Berkeley. Most of them can b solved using undergraduate-level math, but the problems are challenging.

2-0 out of 5 stars Challenging problems, or just standard textbook stuff.
The problem with the contents of this book is that they are mostly standard, or require a simple trick. Many problems also require quite a bit of knowledge in higher mathematics, which may be good if you want to test that.

However, this book is not for problem solving enthusiasts.

What does mathematics mean? Is it numbers or arithmetic, proofs or equations? Jan Gullberg starts his massive historical overview with some insight into why human beings find it necessary to "reckon," or count, and what math means to us. From there to the last chapter, on differential equations, is a very long, but surprisingly engrossing journey. Mathematics covers how symbolic logic fits into cultures around the world, and gives fascinating biographical tidbits on mathematicians from Archimedes to Wiles. It's a big book, copiously illustrated with goofy little line drawings and cartoon reprints. But the real appeal (at least for math buffs) lies in the scads of problems--with solutions--illustrating the concepts. It really invites readers to sit down with a cup of tea, pencil and paper, and (ahem) a calculator and start solving. Remember the first time you "got it" in math class? With Mathematics you can recapture that bliss, and maybe learn something new, too. Everyone from schoolkids to professors (and maybe even die-hard mathphobes) can find something useful, informative, or entertaining here.--Therese Littleton ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad coverage of high school topics
This book is a wonderful supplement to the standard high school curriculum, beginning with algebra and extending through Euclidean geometry, analytic geometry, to differential and integral calculus, and including brief introductions to other "back of the book" topics like probability, determinants, and so on. It is full of hard-to-find details left behind by most texts, such as explicit solutions to third- and fourth- degree polynomials in one variable. It's fun to browse this book in search of such tidbits to fill in your mathematical knowledge.

"Mathematics..." is written at a level just right for someone who has progressed as far as calculus or college engineering math but no further. It is also nice that the myriad (albeit brief) historical references help connect the material with its initial development. Unfortunately, the lack of any contextual information (brief biographies would be welcome) make these references rather dry and unrevealing: authors, dates, and titles of publications is frequently all we get.

I have to agree, too, with the Willingboro reviewer: although this text covers a wide variety of traditional high school and early college topics, at the same time it clearly exhausts its author's knowledge of the subject and therefore cannot provide a foundation for proceeding further. It is akin to a travelogue that directs the reader along completed, well-worn paths, visiting all the conventional landmarks, without pointing out the existence of other paths, other points of interest, or taking the readers to lookout points and vistas suggesting territory remaining to be explored.

Almost all the topics covered are ancient, rarely extending beyond what was known by the middle of the 19th century. (A chapter on fractals is the only exception.) Many important and modern subjects are barely mentioned and certainly not developed beyond the limited introduction available in most high school texts: graph theory, number theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry, functional analysis, group theory, Galois theory, differential geometry, category theory, ..., the list can go on and on. (For example, topology--a vast subject--gets less than three pages, whereas eight pages are devoted to illustrating the routine mechanics of solving euclidean triangles using trigonometry.) This is a shame, because the wealth of topics nevertheless discussed by this book provides an amazing foundation for introducing these modern ideas and pointing out their deeper implications and ramifications. As a result, mathematics comes out looking like a kind of beautiful fossil rather than an organic, evolving creature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Overview of Mathematics
Let's put this book into perspective. At 1040ish pages, it
manages to cover the birth of numbers, algebra, geometry,
probability, differential and integral calculus including
multi-variables, trigonometry, matrices,
complex numbers, logarithms, numerical analysis, first and
second order differential equations... it goes on from there,
touching on a number of other topics. How many
textbooks is that from high school and college?

Wow. Gulberg does it with style. Brief historical anecdotes,
references to the appropriate mathematicians, proofs that are
easy to follow and understand (I found one error), clear
examples in many cases. I read this book and felt like I came
away not only with an excellent review of the key components of
these areas of math, but a better understanding of the whys
and the hows and the whatfors of applications and proofs and
where it all came from.

Maybe this book tested the limits of Dr Gulberg's mathematical
knowledge, as one reviewer suggested. Maybe not. The man was
busy doing surgery, too, and he's done a magnificent job of
putting together a book consisting of concepts that some people
never understand.

No, this book doesn't include a lot of graduate school math.
But as a review of about 14 years worth of math for me, I was
thankful I didn't have to read 10,000 pages, but only 1/10th
that much.

I think it will serve me well as a reference for when my children
are working on their homework, and it certainly has been
an entertaining review for me.

Kudos, Doc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlimited Riches
Gullberg gathered and organized this book over a ten year period. It is a charming compendium. I have been looking things up in it and browsing it for five years, and there are many areas I have not yet touched. I will be enjoying it for another five or ten years.

Why do I like it? Here are five reasons, one for each star.

First, it has wealth of facts and formulas, and it gives you a bit of history with the material. It is nice to see where things came from. Second, if you need to look something up, this is a good place to find it. Third, if you have studied mathematics or used it, you will meet your old friends on these pages, and you will learn something new about some of them. Fourth, if you are keen about the subject, you will see interesting ways of drawing connections between various results and subjects in this book. Fifth, the author's good humor and broad culture shine on these pages so that reading this book is a pleasure.

Editorial reviewer Donald Albers got it right in his Scientific American review when he said that if you were to have just one mathematics book on your shelf, this would be the book to have. I have many mathematics books. This is one that I keep close at hand in my office.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book I've ever used
"Mathematics from the Birth of Numbers" is absolutely the best math book I've ever used. It explains math concepts and problems from counting and arithmatic through algebra, geometry, trigonometry, elementary annalysis and calculus in simple, easy to understand language. I have found this book to be invaluable to my own understanding of these basic mathematics, and when teaching or tutoring others. The explanations are simple and acurate.

I would recomend using this book as a course textbook for middle school, high school, and early college level math classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars An exhaustive pastiche
This book has a great deal of breadth, but, sadly, very little depth. It serves well as an aid to one's memory, but is not a useful book from which to learn.

I'm not displeased that I bought it, but it is not anywhere near as useful as I had hoped it would be. It contains a lot of historical tidbits (and hence serves as a kind of an index to the history of mathematics), but also contains a number of imprecisions and, sadly, some idiosyncratic notations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good review and stress-reliever
This book is good for any student who wishes to learn more about the SAT's and some basic techniques to use while taking the test. Miller reviews material which is on the "big test" and gives practice examples. In the answers to the practice examples, he tells you what you should have done. Miller also tells the reader things that the writers of the test do to trick you. After reading a few chapters and doing practice examples, I felt much better about taking the SAT's and after reading the whole book, I felt confident that I would do excellent. ... Read more
