Book Description

New practical techniques for nonlinear system research and evaluation

Nonlinear Systems Techniques and Applications provides the most practical techniques currently available for analyzing and identifying nonlinear systems from random data measured at the input and output points of the nonlinear systems. These new techniques require only one-dimensional spectral functions that are much simpler to compute and apply than previous nonlinear procedures. The new results show when and how to replace a wide class of single-input/single-output nonlinear models with simpler equivalent multiple-input/single-output linear models. While other techniques are usually restricted to Gaussian data, the new techniques developed here apply to data with arbitrary probability, correlation, and spectral properties.

Numerous examples used in the book are based on the analysis of real physical data passing through real nonlinear systems in the fields of oceanography, automotive engineering, and biomedical research.

For practicing engineers and scientists involved in aerospace, automotive, biomedical, electrical, mechanical, oceanographic, and other activities concerned with nonlinear system analysis, Nonlinear Systems Techniques and Applications is the essential reference work in the field. ... Read more

Book Description

This book presents a fresh, new approach to systems analysis and modeling with a systems science flavor that stimulates systems thinking. After introducing systems modeling principles, the ensuing wide selection of examples aptly illustrate that anything which changes over time can be modeled as a system. Each example begins with a knowledge base that displays relevant information obtained from systems analysis. The diversity of examples clearly establishes a new protocol for synthesizing systems models.

* Macro-to-micro, top-down approach
* Multidisciplinary examples
* Incorporation of human knowledge to synthesise a systems model
* Clear and concise systems delimitation
* Complex systems using simple mathematics
* "Exact" reproduction of historical data plus model generated secondary data
* Systems simulation via systems models

5-0 out of 5 stars A POWERFUL DYNAMIC SYSYTEM SIMULATION TOOL
"The only thing constant in this universe and our lives is change", as explained in an ancient Hindu Scriptures.

How do we determine the impact of constantly changing parameters around us, and what measures can we take to prepare for those changes?

Can we manipulate the variables to have a desired outcome?

Can we prepare for the dire consequences if the variables are beyond our power of manipulations?

Can we allocate our resources appropriately if we know the consequences of inactions?..........

And many more questions can be answered by the technique of dynamic system simulation. The book has ample of examples, is very well written, and is easy to follow.

One's imagination is the only limiting factor in applying the techniques of Dynamo. It could be applied to study farming, ecological balance, impact of wrath or blessings of mother nature such as drought or rain, population shifts, and much more.

For a serious student of simulation technique, I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars praise for john mingers!
What a great book! The text is always very concise, readable , without loosing any depth. Systems Theory is a field which interests me; I've reading dozens of books about cybernetics, pragmatics of human communication, Theory of Information, Theory of Communication, Chaos Theory, Autopoiesis, etc. This is probably one of the best. Shame its not available anymore! ... Read more

Book Description

This Tenth Edition maintains its solid coverage of the two major energy systems of Earth: the plate tectonic system and the hydrologic cycle. Boasting a new four-part organization, this renowned book contains current content and a striking illustration package, while exposing readers to a global view of Earth and helping them look at the world as geologists do.Part I introduces geologic systems, the materials modified by these systems, and geologic time. Part II examines the hydrologic system and its subsystems chapter by chapter. Part III explores the details of the tectonic system and includes chapters on divergent, transform, and convergent boundaries, as well as mantle plumes—the subsystems of the tectonic system. Part IV looks at our planet in two ways: by first examining the geologic resources that make life possible, and then by comparing and contrasting Earth with other planets to reveal how unique our planet is.For professionals with a career or interest in geology, Earth science, and/or environmental science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best geology book ever!
I own a copy of the fifth edition of this book. I am a science junkie and enjoy reading science text books. I find geology particularly interesting and over the years I have read dozens and dozens of geology textbooks. Earth's Dynamic Systems is by far the best I have ever read. If I was ever to teach a geology class, this is the book I would use. The line of thinking is so clear and logical in this book it is a joy to read. The illustrations are among the best I have ever seen and I have just the old the 5th ed. Generally when there are a number of good books on a given subject, they are all pretty much the same in quality. But that is not the case here, this book is head and shoulders above all other geology books. The edition I have also came with a lab manual that I also highly recommend. A wonderful set of books I am proud to own. If you are looking for a definitive single book that best covers all of geology, this is it. In this one book is more geology than in several other books put together. If you thoroughly read this book, you will know geology better than most geologists, it really is that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE most colorful geology book ever
If you want a basic book that will help you understand geology you need this book. the book can fit anyone from age 7 to 70 (while you still see). every kid can understand basic geology concepts by looking at the pictures and reading the wothy text. even if you are a geologist like me you still enjoy wonderful pictures and great explanations. the glossary and the index help you find and understand hard words and terms ... Book Description

The need for a new approach to systems is now widely recognized in business and industry, and numerous "Systems" courses have been introduced in universities. This book offers a new systems paradigm, presents a systems outlook, defines key concepts, and outlines the principles of characterizing complex systems in a qualitative way and by the systematic use of models and measures.

The book presents the Product/process (P/p) methodology: a coherent collection of generic but readily understandable concepts, rigorous but applicable methods, and principles of reasoning. This methodology assists in understanding any system, and helps in the formulation and effective solution of complex problems, regardless of the field in which they arise, and irrespective of the specialist disciplines needed for supplying the solution.

Systems for All is aimed at three kinds of readers: practising professionals (managers, administrators, engineers and scientists) whose job is to develop, operate and manage complex systems; students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) whose courses demand an integrated study of several disciplines; members of the public who would wish to know what makes sophisticated systems tick, and why some important systems fail.

A separate booklet, containing guidelines for developing solutions to some selected exercises, is available to instructors who wish to adopt the book for a lecture course. ... Read more

Book Description

This book presents a rational scheme of analysis for the periodic and quasi-periodic solutions of a broad class of problems with technical and celestial mechanics. It develops steps for the determination of sufficiently generally average equations of motion, which have a clear physical interpretation and are valid for a broad class of weak interaction problems in mechanics. The criteria of stability regarding stationary solutions of these equations derived explicitly and correspond to the extremum of a special "potential" function. Much consideration is given to applications in vibrational technology, electrical engineering and quantum mechanics. A number of results are presented for direct usage in engineering practice. The book is intended for mechanical engineers, physicists, as well as mathematicians specializing in the field of ordinary differential equations. ... Read more
