Book Description

This volume provides a compilation of recent contributions on feedback and robust control, modeling, estimation and filtering. They were presented on the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of Anders Lindquist, who has delivered fundamental contributions to the fields of systems, signals and control for more than three decades. His contributions include seminal work on the role of splitting subspaces in stochastic realization theory, on the partial realization problem for both deterministic and stochastic systems, on the solution of the rational covariance extension problem and on system identification. Lindquist's research includes the development of fast filtering algorithms, leading to a nonlinear dynamical system which computes spectral factors in its steady state, and which provide an alternate, linear in the dimension of the state space, to computing the Kalman gain from a matrix Riccati equation. He established the separation principle for stochastic function differential equations, including some fundamental work on optimal control for stochastic systems with time lags. His recent work on a complete parameterization of all rational solutions to the Nevanlinna-Pick problem is providing a new approach to robust control design. ... Read more

Book Description

In the quarter century since Wallerstein first developed world systems theory (WST), scholars in a variety of disciplines have adopted the approach to explain intersocietal interaction on a grand scale. These essays bring to light archaeological data and analysis to show that many historic and prehistoric states lacked the mechanisms to dominate the distant (and in some cases, nearby) societies with which they interacted. Core/periphery exploitation needs to be demonstrated, not simply assumed, as the interdisciplinary dialogue which occurs in this volume demonstrates. "World-Systems Theory in Practice" will appeal to individuals with an interest in the application of WST in both the Old World and the New World. The papers in this volume reflect the vitality of the debate concerning the use of such generalizing theories and will be of interest to archeologists, anthropologists, historians, sociologists, and those involved in the study of civilizations. ... Book Description

Although chaotic behaviour had often been observed numerically earlier, the first mathematical proof of the existence, with positive probability (persistence) of strange attractors was given by Benedicks and Carleson for the Henon family, at the beginning of 1990's. Later, Mora and Viana demonstrated that a strange attractor is also persistent in generic one-parameter families of diffeomorphims on a surface which unfolds homoclinic tangency. This book is about the persistence of any number of strange attractors in saddle-focus connections. The coexistence and persistence of any number of strange attractors in a simple three-dimensional scenario are proved, as well as the fact that infinitely many of them exist simultaneously. ... Book Description

The theory of nonlinear complex systems has become a proven problem-solving approach in the natural sciences from laser physics to computer simulations of cell growth in biology. It is now recognized that many of our social, ecological, and political problems are also of a global, complex, and nonlinear nature. And it is now accepted the human mind is governed largely by the nonlinear dynamics of complex systems. In this wide-ranging but concise treatment, Prof. Mainzer discusses, mostly in a nontechnical language, the common framework behind these endeavors. Emphasis is given to the evolution of new structures in natural and cultural systems and we see clearly how the new integrative approach can give insights not available from traditional reductionistic methods. This new edition also treats smart materials and artificial life. A new chapter on information and computational dynamics takes up many recent discussions in the community. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars understandable highest level science with cultural backg
The book covers a broad field - all parts in close connection with the others and its background in modern science and historic cultural connotations. The theoretical aspects are merged with lively explanations. Readable for the non-specialist, understandable for the average science-educated and meaningful for the specilaists, both in physical systems science and in philosophy. A top-notch guide through this topic of multidisciplinary novelties.

3-0 out of 5 stars Full but turgid catalogue of complexity phenomena
This book is an extremely well-informed cataloguing of the many areas of human experience in which self-organisation and complexity phenomena play an important role. However the writer's style becomes very heavy as a result of transferring German constructions into English - so much so that I was forced to skim read many sections. ... Read more

Book Description

Informational Macrodynamics (IMD) combines both the information description of the interacted information flows initiated by different data sources, and the information systemic approach, which unify the distinct interdisciplinary modeling concepts for a variety of objects of different natures. The IMD formalism builds a bridge between the mathematical modeling and systemic formalism with the world of information and information technologies to reveal the common information regularities of a variety of modeling objects with a final goal to expose a specific information code for each object. The Variation Principle In Informational Macrodynamics (VP) introduces the process' integral information measure, which has a distinctive difference from traditional information approaches that use an entropy function. The VP's minimax mathematical mechanisms formalize the regularities of the cooperative informational dynamics, connecting randomness and regularities, stochastic and determinism, reversibility and irreversibility, symmetry and nonsymmetry, stability and instability, regular and chaotic dynamics, thermodynamics and informational dynamics, time-reversible and time-irreversible processes, reveals the information dynamic mechanisms of evolution and development. The mathematical formalisms and methods, implemented in the forms of computer models, algorithms and programs, provide new general tools for Information Systems' Modeling in such areas as biology, intelligent systems, computer and information technology, including communications, data modeling and data management.Variation Principle In Informational Macrodynamics, with its examples and applications, will meet the needs of a professional audience composed of researchers and practitioners in industry, as well as graduate-level students in computer science, mathematics and engineering. ... Book Description

Hardbound. In the coming years, there will be many changes in the fields of parallel modelling and simulation. High Performance Computing and Networking (HPCN) has now come to the fore. There will be a huge expansion of application areas where it will become important, if not a must, to solve complex problems even faster but still in a cost-effective way.

The title of this book reflects the rapid progress that is currently occurring in the field of HPCN with respect to processing power/relatively cheap, high speed networking over long distances.

HPCN is now moving into many different areas of application and this is shown by the diversity of topics within this volume - including topics of immense significance for society.

The quality of the articles is high due to a strict refereeing process. The reader is given a valuable opportunity to learn about the latest thinking in this field. ... Read more

Book Description

Hardbound. The chapters in this volume can be grouped into three parts. Part I provides an introductory course in the design and operation of computers and computer systems. It conveys a knowledge of the basic principles of computer systems along with perspectives on the history and future of computers. The study of algorithmics is contained in Part II including matrix computations, fundamental algorithms and data structures, design and analysis of efficient algorithms, and computational complexity. Part III brings out the relation between computer systems and operations research applications.

This volume was designed and written for use in the operations research and management science community. Apart from the background provided by the first five chapters, the emphasis is on the computational tools, algorithms, languages, and systems that assist the problem solver. ... Read more

Book Description

Contrary to monographs on non-linear optics this book concentrates on problems of self-organization in various important contexts. The reader learns how patterns in non-linear optical systems are created and what theoretical methods can be applied to describe them. Next, various aspects of pattern formation such as associative memory, information processing, spatio-temporal instability, photo refraction, and so on are treated. The book addresses graduate students and researchers in physics and optical engineering. ... Read more
