Book Description

Have you ever wondered whether the changing economic and social scenario is linked to a greater time cycle? Aligning the Economic Cycle with the Time Cycle weaves a pattern in the changing face of our socio-economic lives vis-à-vis time. Time, like the boom and fall of economies, also follows a cyclic model. Social perceptions of time form the basis for economic action.

Aligning the Economic Cycle with the Time Cycle emphasizes that we cannot understand our true self until we master the flow of time and familiarize ourselves with the intricate nature of time. It presents a time study lucidly and puts forward searching questions that need to be addressed before we formulate an opinion about the origin of our world and our current position in the time cycle.

There is more to time than we generally perceive; Aligning the Economic Cycle with the Time Cycle fits many jigsaw pieces in the right place to understand the time puzzle more fully. While a rational approach to science and theology answers many questions, the average reader often does not get so much material in one compilation to formulate a concurrent opinion.

Aligning the Economic Cycle with the Time Cycle is ideal reference material for scholars of time studies, economics and human-consciousness studies.

In the beginning, Genesis tells us, was darkness and void, the terrible bleakness of infinity. Modern science has sought to understand that time before time, to describe the origins of the universe, and to model how the world will come to its explosive or whimpering end.

Alexander Waugh, a scion of the family of British satirists, brackets his history of time with the essentially unknowable matters of origin and denouement. But what captures his interest more is the time in between; namely, how different cultures have organized chronological reality and left their mark on our calendar today. Organizing his narrative by units of time that progress from seconds to ages, Waugh looks into the history of water clocks, the temporal theories of Sumerian astronomers and Greek philosophers, and the calendrical reforms of Roman emperors, medieval popes, French revolutionaries, and modern physicists. Waugh writes with a light touch and with much good humor, throwing in his view of whether the third millennium begins in 2000 or 2001 (he calls advocates of the latter position "carping fusspots") and musing over such heady matters as whether the space-time continuum disproves once and for all the theory of free will.

If you're at all interested in how our calendar came to be--or need instructions on how to build your own Stonehenge--then Time is just the book for you. --Gregory McNamee ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No need to fear time
From eternity, to the smallest fraction of a second, Alexader Waugh leads us on a "fun" journeythrough the speculation, science, and nonsense of the frustratingly difficult-to-grasp concept of time. This book is great reading that helps clears up some of those nagging little questions of time and culture.

Humor is not exclusive to science and the author breaks up some otherwise technicaljargon and concepts with some irreverant stories. I love the way that we are treated tothe theories and mistaken theories of some of history's most noted personalities.

I found particulaly insightful the discussions about the competing roles ofpolitics, science, and religion in defining various time standards (seconds, hours, years, etc.).Why do we have 12 hours to a day (instead of10?)Why 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in minute. Why 12 months to a year?Considering so much else is base 10, why all this other stuff?

Those with an inclination to math will find this book particularly interesting. Not interesting in a complexformula sort of way, but in a trivia cultural history of numbers sort of way. There's a lot of good math and number history in this book that I'll bet your math friends are never taught in college.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The true math nerds and philosophers may find it disapointing if they are expecting some break-through answers. For the rest of us, well the book is a fun step into The Twilight Zone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Credibility
This is so obviously a book written by a non-scientist masquerading as a scientist. While a different viewpoint may be refreshing, I found his constant focussing on the personal details of astronomers and others (e.g. the references to Kepler as "smelly" - I have never heard this before) suggestive of a sneering agenda.
While the book is, in parts, entertaining and informative, I cannot trust anyone who says "speed and acceleration are the same thing". This sort of tosh totally destroys the credibility of the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable chronology of human views on 'time'.
For anyone who has studied some metaphysics, or anyone who has just pondered the nature of 'time', this book is an entertaining exploration into the concept of 'time' and how the human species has questioned, divided, and contemplated this enigmatic concept. If reading this sentence takes you 15 seconds, does reading the first word take you half of half of half of half of that time, or less? A parade through the quandaries of Xeno through Kant and beyond. If you enjoy speculation of this kind, don't miss this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The sort of book you can read again and again!
artyvaughan@yahoo.co.uk from UK
The sort of book you want to read again and again!
The is is an extraordinary book - not just because of all the fascinating things that it tells you about time, but because of the way the author plays the reader. He lets you suppose one thing and changes tack, telling you that what you had just learned was not in fact true. The reader needs to stay on his toes, not be fooled by this ingenious method, the author seems to be telling us not to take anythnng for granted. The style is witty and entertaining, but the book also manages to impart a huge amount of condensed information and makes this complicated subject extremely interesting in all of its cultural, historical and scientific dimensions. I was so impressed that I have read it now three times.
I have read twenty or so books on time but this one is by far and away the most appealing. Waugh's theory on the derivation of the seven-day week beats them all! ... Read more

Book Description

Flourishing by A.D. 250-300, Maya civilization extended over large sections of modern Mexico and Guatemala, as well as Belize, and into present-day El Salvador and Honduras. The pre-Conquest inhabitants of this vast area left important clues to their understanding of religious and historical events in the remains of their architecture, painting, sculpture, distinctive polychrome ceramics, and sophisticated hieroglyphic writing. A vital key to understanding these clues is an appreciation of the solar, lunar, and planetary cycles that are woven through the Maya chronological records. The Maya concepts of time figured heavily in their association of human rulers with celestial deities and cosmic events, and in the physical orientation of cities and buildings. In fact, scholars are now realizing that many aspects of pre-Hispanic Maya life were ordered by a religion based on the apparent annual movement of the sun through the sky.

In The Cosmos of the Yucatec Maya, Merideth Paxton provides an ingenious and thorough new study of parts of two of the Maya books, or codices, with particular focus on a previously unrecognized image of the solar year that appears in the manuscript known as the Madrid Codex. The motif of the solar year also underlies her identification of a regional organization among the ruins of the Yucatec Maya settlements. Incorporating analyses of art, archaeology, astronomy, and colonial and modern ethnography pertaining to Yucatán, as well as studies of sixteenth-century Spanish beliefs, she elicits fascinating new meanings from her sources. She invites Mesoamerican specialists and students to consider links between components of pre-Conquest Maya civilization. This innovative, scholarly text is essential reading for all who are interested in Mesoamerica, and it is sure to stimulate additional developments in the field of Maya cosmology and ideology. ... Book Description

"Masterful. This is arguably the most comprehensive inquiry to date by a sociologist on the perception of time, its passage and duration."

--Barry Glassner, University of Southern California

"A highly original and colorful book, filled with compelling, real life and fictional examples."
--Jack Katz, UCLA

"Flaherty invites us to the fascinating world of the phenomenology of time. Particularly sensitive to the inherent tension between the standard and the idiosyncratic, he offers a cross-situational, generic analysis of the circumstances when there is a considerable discrepancy between clock time and our subjective experience of duration such that we feel that time is either compressed ("flies") or protracted ("stands still"). His examination of such temporal anomalies draws on equally-compelling fictional and real first-person accounts. Clearly conceptualized and elegantly written, A Watched Pot is phenomenology at its best."
--Eviatar Zerubavel, author of Hidden Rhythms and The Seven-Day Circle

Time, it has been said, is the enemy. In an era of harried lives, time seems increasingly precious as hours and days telescope and our lives often seem to be flitting past. And yet, at other times, the minutes drag on, each tick of the clock excruciatingly drawn out. What explains this seeming paradox?

Based upon a full decade's empirical research, Michael G. Flaherty's new book offers remarkable insights on this most universal human experience. Flaherty surveys hundreds of individuals of all ages in an attempt to ascertain how such phenomena as suffering, violence, danger, boredom, exhilaration, concentration, shock, and novelty influence our perception of time. Their stories make for intriguing reading, by turns familiar and exotic, mundane and dramatic, horrific and funny.

A qualitative and quantitative tour de force, A Watched Pot presents what may well be the first fully integrated theory of time and will be of interest to scientists, humanists, social scientists and the educated public alike.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book is an example of time dilation
The style: a clever high-school student's essay. Formulaic. Exhaustive. The writing: from one professor to another. Cold. Impressive unnecessary vocabulary usage. Goal: to reinforce in five hundred examples what you already know about time duration. It's like a pointless term paper posing as a breakthrough academic study. I guess I was expecting something stimulating about how our brain creates "time" through processes and orders. Turns out the title was the only thing clever about the book. But it is relatively short, so if you're bored and want to personally experience the warping of minutes into hours... ... Read more

Book Description

Discrete Event Physics introduces a new branch of Physics directly concerned with elucidating the meaning of concepts traditionally studied in that discipline. It is complementary to Mathematical and Experimental Physics, being focused on the same ideas but having different specific goals.

The theory has a fundamentally dynamic nature, its basic ingredients being structured discrete events, causal relations between events, and event properties.

Formal languages are defined for defining events and properties and for comparing definitions, in particular definitions formulated in different paradigms.

The theoretical ideas are exemplified by applications to Space and Time. In this context possible answers to many of the most fundamental unresolved problems in Physics are suggested:

. the nature of time, its apparent continuity, its apparent flow and directionality
. the nature of space, its apparent continuity, and the reasons behind its dimensionality
. the nature of matter
. the possible utility of numbers in defining meaning

3-0 out of 5 stars covers time series methods like a cookbook
I reviewed the third edition of this book for the American Statistician in 1994. The book covers most of the important topics for an applied course and has a reasonable list of references. There are many examples and homework exercises. Statistical software packages such as SAS and MINITAB are used throughout in example problems. The early chapters cover the basics of statistical inference and regression (Chapters 2-5). This material can be skipped in a first time series course if introductory statistics is a prerequisite.

The latter chapters cover time series regression, seasonal decomposition methods, exponential smoothing and Box-Jenkins methods. But this book does not include nonlinear time series models and it overlooks the recent and popular state space approach to time series modeling. Multivariate time series methods are also left out, though perhaps they are more appropriate for an advanced or second course in time series analysis.

The cookbook nature of the text can be found in the guidelines given for Box-Jenkins model identification. The statistical theory that the methods rely on is avoided. Although a number of important probability distributions are used with their relevant statistical tables, the underlying assumptions and distributional theory is completely avoided. Important concepts such as the central limit theorem and the concept of a stationary stochastic process are given only very brief treatment. Other concepts are oversimplified to avoid the need for the development of any distribution theory.

This book will serve well for a course in which the student is interested in how to implement exponential smoothing and the general class of Box-Jenkins models through the use of standard statistical packages. However if the instructor wants depth of understanding the text is not adequate. Frequecy domain methods often useful in engineering applications are not even discussed.

While the book covers forecasting applications, it does not consider applications to decomposition of variance or discriminant analysis. Time series methods are also applicable in these contexts. Abraham and Ledolter (1984) "Statistical Methods for Forecasting" cover the same topics but in much greater depth. Also Janacek and Swift (1993) "Time Series: Forecasting, Simulation, Applications" is slightly more advanced and provides broader coverage. Anyone interested in the theory can consult a number of good books including the latest edition of Brockwell and Davis "Time Series: Theory and Methods". Shumway and Stoffer (2000) "Time Series Analysis and Its Applications" is up-to-date, comprehensive and has many good engineering applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is one of the best how to books for time series
This book covers step by step methodology and theory for the basic time series concepts. It has worked out examples with even the most rudimentary calculations demonstrated for complex subjects like ARMA and Box-Cox decomposition. It is a good book for basic practitioners and those with a basic interest in time series analysis ... Read more

Book Description

World-wide time relationships no longer need to be mysterious or difficult to understand. The tables presented in this book compensate for the effect of such variables as Daylight Saving Time and the International Dateline. Time is indicated in both twelve- and twenty-four hour forms of notation, the date relationship between places is clearly indicated, information is provided about the basic time that is observed in a place, time zones are described for those countries having multiple time zones, and the dates during which Daylight Saving (also called Advanced or Summer Time) applies are described. A significant feature of this volume is the portrayal of time relationships across the spectrum of a full twenty-four-hour day, so users can easily determine the optimum time to place a call, send a fax, etc. Unlike time calculators, the user does not need to know whether or when Daylight Saving Time is observed in another place, because separate tables are provided for both Standard and Daylight Saving Times for those places that observe both. In international communications and trade, there is often only a small overlap in the working hours of distant partners or clients. "International Time Tables" will help anyone with long-distance communications requirements cope with the nuances of world-wide time. ... Read more

This pioneering volume explores time series analysis and interpretation using a wide range of methods and examples from terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecology. The book challenges readers to discern interdisciplinary processes that can unify fields as diverse as climatology and epidemiology. The first section of the book explores the basic concepts of environmental analysis, reviews state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies, and offers innovative solutions to analytical problems of longer time series with special attention to climate change, providing the reader with the conceptual and methodological tools to analyze environmental data accurately. The second section examines a variety of time scales used to describe change, and the variability within and between different ecosystems, so that diverse systems may be studied in an integrated way. The final section of the book illustrates key concepts and themes, based on the results of major investigations in various time scales, including studies from arctic sites to human epidemiology. Investigating time series in the context of ecological functions such as population processes, community structure, and patch dynamics, this insightful volume will stimulate cross fertilization among the ecological disciplines. The broad spectrum of ideas and applications examined in this volume makes it a useful resource for all ecologists. ... Read more

Book Description

In the wake of the recent millennium excitement, this publication takes a close look at the role of time in the constitution of our technological reality. At least since Einstein's theory of relativity and Bergson's aesthetics, we have been aware that time forms an indispensable dimension of the reality that surrounds us, and of the way in which we perceive this reality. The artists in "Machine Times" explore the manner in which time both delimits and constitutes our spatial reality. "Machine Times" is published on the occasion of the DEAF 2000 festival in Rotterdam, which investigates the phenomenon of time through a variety of formats--interactive image manipulation, sound performances and virtual environments--in art projects, stage events, essays, and interviews. A sequel to "The Art of the Accident" (1998), "Machine Times" includes essays, interviews and projects by Francisco Varela,, Detlef Linke, Isabelle Stingers, Peter Weibel, Perry Hoberman, Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, Helga Nowotny, Woody Vasulka, Eduardo Kac, tx-transform, Atau Tanaka, and several others.
