Book Description

This text is ideal for a basic course in functional analysis for senior undergraduate and beginning postgraduate students. John Giles provides insight into basic abstract analysis, which is now the contextual language of much modern mathematics. Although it is assumed that the student has familiarity with elementary real and complex analysis, linear algebra, and the analysis of metric spaces, the book does not assume a knowledge of integration theory or general topology. Its central theme concerns structural properties of normed linear spaces in general, especially associated with dual spaces and continuous linear operators on normed linear spaces. Giles illustrates the general theory with a great variety of example spaces. ... Read more

Book Description

The book deals with the structure of vector lattices, i.e. Riesz spaces, and Banach lattices, as well as with operators in these spaces. The methods used are kept as simple as possible. Almost no prior knowledge of functional analysis is required. For most applications some familiarity with the ordinary Lebesgue integral is already sufficient. In this respect the book differs from other books on the subject. In most books on functional analysis (even excellent ones) Riesz spaces, Banach lattices and positive operators are mentioned only briefly, or even not at all. The present book shows how these subjects can be treated without undue extra effort. Many of the results in the book were not yet known thirty years ago; some even were even not known then years ago. ... Read more

Book Description

Orthonormal Systems and Banach Space Geometry describes the interplay between orthonormal expansions and Banach space geometry. Using harmonic analysis as a starting platform, classical inequalities and special functions are used to study orthonormal systems leading to an understanding of the advantages of systems consisting of characters on compact Abelian groups. Probabilistic concepts such as random variables and martingales are employed and Ramsey's theorem is used to study the theory of super-reflexivity. The text yields a detailed insight into concepts including type and co-type of Banach spaces, B-convexity, super-reflexivity, the vector-valued Fourier transform, the vector-valued Hilbert transform and the unconditionality property for martingale differences (UMD). A long list of unsolved problems is included as a starting point for research. This book should be accessible to graduate students and researchers with some basic knowledge of Banach space theory, real analysis, probability and algebra. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the first systematic study of best approximation theory in inner product spaces and, in particular, in Hilbert space. Geometric considerations play a prominent role in developing and understanding the theory. The only prerequisite for reading the book is some knowledge of advanced calculus and linear algebra. Throughout the book, examples and applications have been interspersed with the theory. Each chapter concludes with numerous exercises and a section in which the author puts the results of that chapter into a historical perspective. The book is based on lecture notes for a graduate course on best approximation which the author has taught for over 25 years. ... Read more

Average Customer Review: 4 out of 5 stars
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

Book Description

This text is an axiomatic treatment of the properties of continuous multivariable functions and related results from topology. Viewing multiple real variables as members of vector spaces, the author covers boundedness, extreme values, and uniform continuity of functions, along with the connections between continuity and topological concepts such as connectedness and compactness. The order of topics deliberately mimics the order of development in elementary calculus. This sequencing allows an elementary approach, with analogies to and generalizations from such familiar ideas as the Pythagorean Theorem. The reader is frequently reminded that the pictures suggested by geometry are powerful guides and tools. The definition-theorem-proof format resides within an informal exposition, containing numerous historical comments and questions within and between the proofs. The objective is to present precise proofs, but in a structure and tone that teach the student to plan and write proofs, both in general and specifically in a real analysis course. Applications are largely absent, except where they provide interesting illustrations of the principles and theorems presented. Problems, solutions, bibliography and index complete this book.Continuous Functions of Vector Variables is suitable for advanced undergraduates preparing for graduate programs in pure mathematics. Required background includes a course in the theory of one-variable calculus and the elements of linear algebra. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars though concise but thorough
I think this is one of the best introduction book to analysis and to multivariable calculus at the same time. it is more intesive than ross elementary analysis but less intensive than spivak and rudins. one reading this book will not need a multivariable calculus background to study this advance topic. though it is reserve for students who lack a some what mathematical maturity, it is still an excellent book, because it makes the students understand the subject.from there a student can advance further. the only problem with this book is that the problems are a bit routine. Guzman should have put nonclassic problems i.e. challenging problems. ... Read more

This text puts together "folklore results" touching weak Asplund spaces. It presents a thorough examination of weak Asplund cases. Nonseparable Banach spaces, renorming, and differentiability are stressed throughout the text and all subclasses, including inferences and counterexamples are discussed. It also covers Stegall's classes, fragmentability, and "long sequences" of linear projections. Notes, remarks and questions end each chapter. ... Read more

Book Description

Fundamental to the study of any mathematical structure is an understanding of its symmetries. In the class of Banach spaces, this leads naturally to a study of isometries-the linear transformations that preserve distances. In his foundational treatise, Banach showed that every linear isometry on the space of continuous functions on a compact metric space must transform a continuous function x into a continuous function y satisfying y(t) = h(t)x(p(t)), where p is a homeomorphism and |h| is identically one.Isometries on Banach Spaces: Function Spaces is the first of two planned volumes that survey investigations of Banach-space isometries. This volume emphasizes the characterization of isometries and focuses on establishing the type of explicit, canonical form given above in a variety of settings. After an introductory discussion of isometries in general, four chapters are devoted to describing the isometries on classical function spaces. The final chapter explores isometries on Banach algebras. This treatment provides a clear account of historically important results, exposes the principal methods of attack, and includes some results that are more recent and some that are lesser known. Unique in its focus, this book will prove useful for experts as well as beginners in the field and for those who simply want to acquaint themselves with this area of Banach space theory. ... Book Description

This volume presents papers from the Fourth Conference onFunction Spaces. The conference brought together mathematiciansinterested in various problems within the general area offunction spaces, allowing for discussion and exchange of ideason those problems and related questions.

The lectures covered a broad range of topics, including spacesand algebras of analytic functions of one and of many variables(and operators on such spaces), $L^p$-spaces, spaces ofBanach-valued functions, isometries of function spaces, geometryof Banach spaces, and related subjects.

Included are 26 articles written by leading experts. Knownresults, open problems, and new discoveries are featured. Mostpapers are written for nonexperts, so the book can serve as agood introduction to the material presented. ... Read more

Book Description

The study of composition operators lies at the interface of analytic function theory and operator theory. Composition Operators on Spaces of Analytic Functions synthesizes the achievements of the past 25 years and brings into focus the broad outlines of the developing theory. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the linear operators of composition with a fixed function acting on a space of analytic functions. This new book both highlights the unifying ideas behind the major theorems and contrasts the differences between results for related spaces. Nine chapters introduce the main analytic techniques needed, Carleson measure and other integral estimates, linear fractional models, and kernel function techniques, and demonstrate their application to problems of boundedness, compactness, spectra, normality, and so on, of composition operators. Intended as a graduate-level textbook, the prerequisites are minimal. Numerous exercises illustrate and extend the theory. For students and non-students alike, the exercises are an integral part of the book. By including the theory for both one and several variables, historical notes, and a comprehensive bibliography, the book leaves the reader well grounded for future research on composition operators and related areas in operator or function theory. ...
