3-0 out of 5 stars Nice try
The author does a good job of providing appropriate graphics to aid in the student's comprehension, but the text is woefully lacking. My professor, thankfully, used the book only for the exercises, which are quite extensive. Whenever I had difficulty grasping an idea and referred to the text I became completely confused, so I began recording my class and playing it back for a clear explanation. I am the type of student who can learn on my own, but that could never happen with this book. ... Read more

Book Description

The Fourth Edition of College Algebra and Trigonometry helps students see the dynamic link between concepts and applications. The authors' hallmark approach, the Aufmann Interactive Method, encourages students to interact with math by presenting an annotated example, then guiding students with a Try Exercise, and finally presenting a worked-out solution for immediate reinforcement of the concept.

  • An Instructor's Annotated Edition, unlike any other offered for this course, features reduced student text pages with special instructor resources in the margins: teaching tips, extra examples, ideas for reinforcing concepts, discussion suggestions, highlighted vocabulary and symbols, challenge problems, quizzes, suggested assignments, and references to transparencies that may be found both in the Instructor's Resource Manual and on the web site.
  • Side-by-Side Solutions to examples pair an algebraic solution and a graphical representation to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Technology-dependent modeling sections introduce the idea of mathematical modeling of data through linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and logistic regression.
  • Integrated web resources include selected Take Note boxes (identified by a special web icon) which direct students to an interactive example or a downloadable file on the web site. These special resources can be used by instructors for presentation purposes or can be assigned to students to help them 'visualize' a concept.
  • Exploring Concepts with Technology, a special end-of-chapter feature, expands on ideas introduced in the text by using technology to investigate extended mathematical applications or topics.
  • Projects at the end of each exercise set are designed to encourage students (or groups of students) to research and write about mathematics and its applications. Additional Projects are included in the Instructor's Resource Manual and on the book's web site.
  • Take Note and Math Matters (formerly called Point of Interest) margin notes alert students about interesting aspects of math history, applications, and points that require special attention.

Book Description

Updated to match the emphasis in today's courses, this clear study guide focuses entirely on plane trigonometry. It summarizes the geometry properties and theorems that prove helpful for solving trigonometry problems. Also, where solving problems requires knowledge of algebra, the algebraic processes and the basic trigonometric relations are explained carefully. Hundreds of problems solved step by step speed comprehension, make important points memorable, and teach problem-solving skills. Many additional problems with answers help reinforce learning and let students gauge their progress as they go. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly and Deplorably Horrible
This book as mentioned in the title is horrible. It is incomplete in many areas, case and point, curve graphing. In many cases the book does little more than introduce the topic and give somewhat bland math questions. This book will not help you through a normal course because it is somewhat babified.
Now back to the incompleteness. Half-way through the book trigonometric function graphs are introduced (y=sinx and so on). The book very briefly describes aspects of each periodic function in a somewhat scattered manner. All of the information that is given fits on about one 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper, somewhat terse isn't it?
This book is not for beginners and is most likely not even for people that would like to brush up on trigonometry. For a more comprehensive edition of a trigonometry tutorial you must turn elsewhere because this book will leave you asking what? huh? how? Perhaps one of the better trigonometry titles out there, and believe me I say this reluctantly because it is also deplorable, is Trigonometry the Easy Way. In conclusion if you have this book return it or if you can't use it only as a way to reinforce trigonometry ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lacking Application
This book is great for people with thick glasses with tape on them who are presidents of their computer programming clubs but for the rest of us this is not too great. This book is heavy on the theory but lacks application which MOST people need in their classes. No teacher is gonna ask you what a Apollo Axil Centripital Angle(no such thing) is. Too confusing but very organized. These people did a great job in explaining theory. I would not sugest this anyone to use this independently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of trigonometry
Trigonometry was never a good subject for me--I never "got" it. But when I was taking advanced math and science courses, I needed trig. This book helped me to "get" it, finally, and be able to solve trigonometric problems. It's very clear, up-to-date, and well-written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real easy approach.
I found the book very useful for brushing up one's knowledge of trigonometry. It gets down to the point right away without wasting any time on unnecessary theory. After all, its your problem solving ability that counts and not how well you know the theory.:)
What I like most about this book is that it treats the subject matter from a student's point of view (like it teaches you how to get the answer using a calculator STEP by STEP.....it actually tells you which buttons to push). Also, throughout the book ,the application of trigonometry in surveying, construction, astronomy and air-navigation is emphasized.
I recommend this book for anyone who's taking computer science/engineering/technology courses in college.

Book Description

"Trigonometry", a work in the collection of the "Gelfand School Outreach Program", is the result of the successful collaboration between two experienced pre-college teachers, one of whom, I.M. Gelfand, is considered the most distinguished living mathematician. Gelfand's impact on generations of young people, some now mathematicians of renown, continues to be remarkable.

All basic topics in Trigonometry are covered with an emphasis on beautiful illustrations and examples that treat elementary trigonometry as an outgrowth of geometry, but stimulate the reader to think of all of mathematics as a unified subject. The definitions of the trigonometric functions are geometrically motivated. Geometric relationships are rewritten in trigonometric form and extended. The text then makes a transition to a study of the algebraic and analytic properties of trigonometric functions, in a way that provides a solid foundation for more advanced mathematical discussions.

Like other I.M. Gel'fand treasures in the program, Algebra, Functions and Graphs, and The Method of Coordinates, Trigonometry is written in an engaging style, and approaches the material in a unique fashion that will motivate students and teachers alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Algebra II Book
This is a decent Algebra II book. The examples are comprehensive and detailed, but sometimes I couldn't follow with the examples. The easy, medium, and hard problems are all excellent. I would recommend this book to future algebra students.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb text
As a teacher of mathematics I have used a number of different algebra texts and evaluated many others. After an extensive search for a text that would meet the needs of students preparing for college-level mathematics, I decided that this book had no equal. The exposition is both clear and rigorous, and the problems are of real mathematical depth without being too difficult for most students. One of the best aspects of the book is the extensive drill on algebra skills included in every section.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Algebra II/Trigonometry Text Available
I used this book (when it was written by Mary P. Dolciani) in 1973-74 as a junior in high school and loved it. The recent revisions continue the excellence of Dolciani and the series. The theory is sound and the examplesare easy to follow. Especially important is the numerous exercises gradedin difficulty that help the student master the material. This book actuallymakes students THINK and does not spoon feed the material.

I can't sayenough great things about this text.My school district uses this text forthe honors tract (9th/10th grades) but uses another text for the"regular" 11th grade Algebra II sequence.I feel this isunfortunate because all students can benefit from the rigors of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful, comprehensive, and lucid textbook
Faithful to the highest standards of traditional math, this rigorous and thorough tour of algebra and trigonometry is presented with meticulous clarity. It is an invaluable tool in its own right, but is especiallyworthwhile in preparation for advancing to upper level math concepts.Thesections dedicated to word problems have particularly relevant real worldapplications, addressing the "When are we ever gonna have to usethis?" issue with convincing examples. The organization isintelligent, uncluttered, and methodical. As a resource, this volumerepresents an investment of substantial educational merit, anduncompromising quality. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I've read better math books.........
I read this book in a college mathematics course called college trigonometry. In its explanations of some of the mathematical concepts, the book is way too specific in Chapter 1.The other chapters were way toovauge, and give very little real-world applications in the understanding ofthe mathematical concepts. This is just the way I saw it.The writeralso uses the letters "u" and "v" as variables.Thisis not good, because of the confusion of the letters "u" and"v" looking the same or very similar when the student writes themdown. Also greek letters used for angles, is more confusing thannecessary. The excersises at the end of the sections were ok, however, they were repetitive.By this I mean the writer has the same problems overand over again, but increasing slightly in difficulty. There needs to bemore real world applications in this book to explain mathematical ideas. Also there are only answers provided in the back of the book and in thestudent guide to the odd numbered problems.I think a student could domuch better in this course if the answers were provided to all thequestions, and they were more thouroughly explained in the solutionsmanual. It would be a good idea to revise this (The students SolutionsManual) The author solves the problems in a hurry, and does not take thetime to go through them step by step, which is very important in learningmathematics.Overall I thought the book was written using concepts thatwere really hard to understand the way they were explained. The only thingthat I found helpful about the book was the practice problems, and withsome of the issues that I mentioned about varibles, and angle variables, even the practice problems were difficult. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review from an instructor's point of view
My name is Dave Nosanchuk and I am a mathematics instructor at Oakland Community College. This was my first time teaching Trigonometry and I found Mrs. Aratari's Trigonometry - A Circular Function Approach to be a very well written math book.It provides students with very good step-by-step examples, well written exercise sets with clear and straight forward instructions, valuable chapter summaries, and chapter tests. The Student's Study Guide and Solutions Manual contain worksheets for each chapter that the instructor and students complete during class. These worksheets make teaching the class a lot easier because they indicate the important concepts to discuss and the order in which to discuss them.I was so impressed with the use of these worksheets that I have begun to adopt them into my teaching practices.Although the worksheets take a substantial amount of time to create, I feel that the benefit to my teaching and the students far outweighs the time spent. It was a pleasure to have these worksheets prepared in advance, especially now that I know how much time and efforts is spent on this preparation.

As an instructor, I found that by using the worksheets, my preparation time was reduced as much of the work has been done for you.In addition, the Instructor's Testing Manual contains multiple versions of section quizzes, chapter tests and final exams. These tests are formatted such that they are ready to be used, unlike other test banks that require the tests to be re-written before using.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book ever

It reviewed the chapters in a chapter summary, gave chapter tests, reviewed previous algebra knowlege along with clear and straight forward instrunctions, easy to understand. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good supplemental review
My two sons used this book to help them understand their pre-calculus courses. It was also a big help for them in physics and astronomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, not stodgy
This book presents trigonometry in a relatively informal and understandable way. Emphasis is on the facts, without getting sidetracked in proofs. The drawings are relevant and straightforward. The book is well-organized and proceeds logically from beginning to end. There are some question-and-answer problems in the text (although I'd like to see more) and plenty of multiple-choice test questions with answers in the appendix. The test questions are especially good, because they resemble the standardized tests schoolchildren are forced to take these days. The four-dimentional stuff is cool (but may be over the top for some readers). This book, combined with a standard school textbook, should make high-school students highly proficient in this subject, and get them ready for more advanced courses such as calculus, analysis, and topology.

1-0 out of 5 stars This guy blows at writing books
This guy stinks at writing books. The first ten pages of his book are annoyingly vocabulary intensive. Rather than spending a little time familiarizing you with the terminology, the author immediately begins using every possible word in his vocabulary forcing you to have to glance at your notes. He's probably a great math geek, but can't teach if his life depended on it. Don't bother with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
I am a math dummy. I bought this book at a local store because it looked like I could maybe understand it. I do. For the first time I feel like I know something about trigonometry. Too many math books are just professors showing each other how smart they are. This book taught me something without making me feel stupid. It's the only trig book I have ever seen like this.

1-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Learn Trigonometry, Find a Different Book!!!
First off, I'm not afraid of math--I had a 100% in my college algebra class last semester, and I bought this book to get a quick overview of trigonometry to give myself an edge before taking a formal class. I bought this book because I had been very satisfied with Algebra: Demystified, and had assumed that all books in the Demystified series would be of a comparably high quality, but I was sadly mistaken. This book is terrible--it will not teach you trigonometry. Mr. Gibilisco wastes lots of space giving you no brainer advice like a whole paragraph on why you should use your calculator if needed or reviewing simple things like the Order of Operations. On the other hand, he gives a formula for circular motion in the first chapter and doesn't even bother to explain the variables or provide an example of it. The second chapter, appropriately titled, "A Flurry of Facts" is an endless series of formulas, most of which don't come with examples. Furthermore, the book doesn't have sufficient exercises. There are only 10 multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter, and they don't have solutions, not to mention that examples of similar problems within the chapter were strangely absent. Although I was able to score 100% on both of the first 2 chapter tests, I gave up in the middle of the third chapter because I realized that if I really wanted to learn trigonometry, I should go elsewhere. Once I have found a better text, I'll edit this review to refer you to it. ... Read more

I used this book for a Algebra II class I took over the summer at a college. Though I'm a high school student, I understood this book. The authors gave good examples for each type of problem for each section. There are 100 plus review questions for each section. The answers to every single odd numbered question in the back of the book.
Diagrams included are extremely helpful. Definitions and important theorems stand out because they are placed in blue boxes. My only complaints are that some examples don't exactly walk through the entire problem and that the wording of some definitions are verbose. ... Read more

This classic in the series of highly respected Swokowski/Cole mathematics texts retains the elements that have made it so popular with instructors and students alike: it is clearly written, the time-tested exercise sets feature a variety of applications, its exposition is clear, its uncluttered layout is appealing, and the difficulty level of problems is appropriate and consistent. Now this Ninth Edition of Fundamentals of Algebra and Trigonometry has been improved in three important ways.First, discussions have been rewritten to enable students to more easily understand the mathematical concepts presented.Second, exercises have been added that require students to estimate, approximate, interpret a result, write a summary, create a model, explore, or find a generalization.Third, graphing calculators have been incorporated to a greater extent through the addition of examples and exercises as well as the inclusion of a cross-referenced appendix on the use of the TI-82/83.All of this has been accomplished without compromising the mathematical integrity that is the hallmark of this text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone has to start some where.
I do not know about you. But I can study math a lot better if the book has a hard cover. This first chapter assumes you are coming from ground zero and is good to read just to brush up or see if there is anything new, that you missed originally. There is a smooth transition and a gradual complexity as you go from the fundamentals through the subject. Now some people will complain that it is not all practical or applied. This was not designed as a course for practical or applied. However it sure helps when reading other books tat can only explain tings in at least rudimentary math. Even the fundamentals of trig are needed to follow The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski ISBN: 0316109339. Now I call that practical. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars TI must have cut Mr. Hornsby a big check
I'm taking a precalc class that uses this text as a refresher before beginning an undergraduate degree in Physics. In the early 90' I'd taken Algebra, Statistics, Precalc, and even a few Calculus classes (over 10 math classes in all). Out of all the math texts I've used, this is by far the worst. The examples are so poorly explained, I ALWAYS end up having to refer to one of my old texts. The book was written to be used with TI calculators, only problem is, no key stokes on how to perform a particular operation are included. Normally this should be the realm of your trusty owners manual, but if a math text is geared for a particular brand of calculator and the faculty at your college are forcing that brand of calculator down the students throats, then the book should offer some instruction on the calculator. I'm actually thinking about finishing my math at another college that does NOT use this text. If you're just looking for a reference book for precalc, look elsewhere. ... Read more
