3-0 out of 5 stars Better have some background
This is an okay introduction, however some of the explanations are hard to follow - and there aren't enough, and you definately need background in algebra before tackling this one. I would probably go with one of the "cliff's notes" mathematics books over this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay for those who have some clue on the subject
This book was okay. I mean if I didn't remember what my teacher taught me I would be lost. I mean this book is to help you understand what your teacher has already taught you. I only use it as a review to refresh my memory, but if you want to learn it good luck. It doesn't cover all the material that pre-calculus needs. Basically this book covers mostly stuff from Algebra 2 and some from pre-calculus/trig. The book can be confusing for some parts, and other parts he explains pretty well. But basically if you want to better your pre-calculus skills you'll have to buy a separate book to quiz you. This book only has examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hated It!
With all of the hype presented on the cover of this book, I was looking forward to reading it. I was also hoping that this book would easily prepare me for precalc. This book was as confusing and difficult to conceptualize as some of the "teachers" who teach the subject. I wasted my money. I spent more time trying to figure out what was going on in the book that it made me forget was was going on at the begining of the chapter. Again "Hated It".

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for Calculus
This book provided an excellent review of the precalculus that is necessary to master calculus. His explanations are simple and precise. I highly recommend this book. It makes an intimidating subject matter like math easy to understand. ... Read more

Book Description

Ideal for instructors who teach a precalculus level course and wish to include a comprehensive review of algebra at the beginning, this text introduces trigonometry first with a right triangle approach and then with the unit circle. As the best-selling text in the field, Algebra and Trigonometry provides unparalleled exercises, motivating real-life applications, a supportive pedagogical design, and innovative ancillaries and resources, making it a complete solution for both students and instructors.

  • New! Model It real-life applications in nearly every text section are multi-part exercises that require students to generate and analyze mathematical models. First referenced in the Why You Should Learn It at the beginning of each section, these interesting applications illustrate why it is important to learn the concepts in each section.
  • New! Enlarged printable graphs in many exercise sets contain problems asking students to draw on the graph provided. For added convenience, in the Sixth Edition these proofs have been moved from an appendix to the end of relevant chapters.
  • New! P.S. Problem Solving, at the conclusion of each chapter, features a collection of thought-provoking and challenging exercises that further explore and expand upon the concepts of the chapter. These exercises have unique characteristics that set them apart from traditional algebra and trigonometry exercises.
  • New! A wealth of student success tools includes How to Study This Chapter, a chapter-opening study guide that includes What you should learn (section-opening objectives), Important Vocabulary, a list of Study Tools, and a list of Additional Resources to help the student prepare for the chapter; Why you should learn it, a section-opening, real-life application or a reference to other branches of mathematics, illustrating the relevance of the section's content; and What did you learn?, a concise chapter summary organized by section. These objectives are correlated to the chapter Review Exercises to help students prepare for exams.
  • Abundant, up-to-date Real-Life Applications are integrated throughout the examples and exercises and identified by a globe icon to reinforce the relevance of the concepts being learned.
  • A wide variety of Exercises, including computational, conceptual, and applied problems are carefully graded in difficulty to allow students to gain confidence as they progress. Each exercise set includes Synthesis Exercises that promote further exploration of mathematical concepts, critical-thinking skills, and writing about mathematics, and Review Exercises that reinforce previously learned skills and concepts.

Book Description

Trigonometry has always been the black sheep of mathematics. It has a reputation as a dry and difficult subject, a glorified form of geometry complicated by tedious computation. In this book, Eli Maor draws on his remarkable talents as a guide to the world of numbers to dispel that view. Rejecting the usual arid descriptions of sine, cosine, and their trigonometric relatives, he brings the subject to life in a compelling blend of history, biography, and mathematics. He presents both a survey of the main elements of trigonometry and a unique account of its vital contribution to science and social development. Woven together in a tapestry of entertaining stories, scientific curiosities, and educational insights, the book more than lives up to the title Trigonometric Delights.

Maor, whose previous books have demystified the concept of infinity and the unusual number "e," begins by examining the "proto-trigonometry" of the Egyptian pyramid builders. He shows how Greek astronomers developed the first true trigonometry. He traces the slow emergence of modern, analytical trigonometry, recounting its colorful origins in Renaissance Europe's quest for more accurate artillery, more precise clocks, and more pleasing musical instruments. Along the way, we see trigonometry at work in, for example, the struggle of the famous mapmaker Gerardus Mercator to represent the curved earth on a flat sheet of paper; we see how M. C. Escher used geometric progressions in his art; and we learn how the toy Spirograph uses epicycles and hypocycles.

Maor also sketches the lives of some of the intriguing figures who have shaped four thousand years of trigonometric history. We meet, for instance, the Renaissance scholar Regiomontanus, who is rumored to have been poisoned for insulting a colleague, and Maria Agnesi, an eighteenth-century Italian genius who gave up mathematics to work with the poor--but not before she investigated a special curve that, due to mistranslation, bears the unfortunate name "the witch of Agnesi." The book is richly illustrated, including rare prints from the author's own collection. Trigonometric Delights will change forever our view of a once dreaded subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars generous
This book is really interesting primarily for its information about the history of trigonometry. There's some interesting stuff about the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and Greeks; and a lot of great stuff about early European mathematics; stopping around Euler's time.

I hadn't studied trig in about 8 years, and I thought this would be a good review. Boy, was I wrong! I needed to do the review and then study this book!

Anyway, if you're a fairly gifted high school trig student, this book will certainly liven up the subject for you. If you're a college math major, it will be easy reading, and certainly interesting. If you're a teacher, you might find something interesting to entertain your students. Otherwise, unless you really like math or are really good at it, this book will probably be really difficult for you.

When I was feeling lazy I kind of breezed through the dense equations and looked for the conclusions, but when I was diligent I could usually make sense of them. You can do as I did and you won't miss much. Really, the highlights of the book are the historical information, not the equations. But if you can appreciate the equations as well, then you'll probably really enjoy the book.

Of course this isn't a life-changing or eye-opening book, but I gave it 5 stars just so no one thinks there's anything wrong with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Delightful
What do sines, pyramids, music, and Fourier series all have in common? Eli Maor did an excellent job in explaining these dry and seemingly irrelevant terminologies to his readers. From Ahmes the Scribe to Fourier, Maor traced the development of trigonometry by juxtaposing different trig concepts with people and anecdotes. An inspiratoinal book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Adventure
Trigonometry and geometry are important parts for understand or handle what happend with the thigs in our world. Usually you can use these for study a force like a vector in the space, or you will need verify how are related forces several in parts of a complex structure, or you want to discover by yourself how was verified earth shape and who made it first.

Maybe you under siege for an incredible account of information of strange scientifics developments in the past, finally you need understand what is a amazing science, is part of our knowledge. Maybe you think that is too much cold, bored and so useless, but when you read this historical adventure you would say it's incredible, I don't have idea!.

With this kind of book that we can understand our complex knowledge legacy and get more value for it, because this is science not magic, it should be a very usefull tool for teachers and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
If you think that trigonometry is boring and trivial, then read this book! He shows how central trig has been to many fields of math and science. A truly inspirational book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story of intellectual devellopment.
Trigonometry is a flower of the intellect which has roots in the very earliest civilisations. References occur in some of the most ancient known texts. Maor unfolds the concepts and applications as they develloped through history. An inspirational book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done Text
This text is perhaps the best I've used on Algebra and Trigonometry. After taking algebra in high school, obtaining this text for college helped me understand the concepts that I had missed. Bittinger does an extraordinary job of describing the processes and applications of algebra and trigonometry. His use of technology makes the process fun also.

So I give this text 5 stars, and recommend it to anyone interested in mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious Text for an Ambitious Student!
First, this book is probably the most beautiful Math Book you will ever see. The text explains mathematical concepts with colorful pictures and modern calculator-generated graphs that definitely encourage students to make more use of their graphing calculators.

Second, I believe this book bridges (somewhat) the gap between the traditional lecture/proofs format and new trend of interactive CPM (Collage Prep. Math.) Programs--where students "investigate" with one another to figure out mathematical puzzles and concepts. In this sense, this book is very ambitious. It presents both graphical, heuristic arguements as well as rigorous proofs (when helpful). (For more info. on the issue, look for Prof. Wu's article in Berkeley Math Dept. Web Site)

Problems and exercises in the text also encourage this "investigation" and Proving process. I believe this to be one of the greatest strengths of the text. There are the classical "warm-ups" (easy repetitive problems), then medium to challenging problems that engage students in heavy and insightful calculations. Following are some review problems...then come the "synthesis" problems where students are pushed to think about some underlying structures in Algebra. For instance, the question of if there is always an irrational number between two rational; or when a n-th root of an rational number is also a rational number, etc.

Sounds over-whelming, huh?...over 100 problems for each sections (not chapters)!

Each Chapters are packed with information...one Chapter in this book is equivalent to Three Chapters in any other (like Hosteller's, Miller's, or Dolciani's Texts).

Only topic left out is Three-Dimensional (R-3) plots--usually mentioned (in brief) in Second year Algebra or Junior Class Math-Analysis. It's not a big problem, however, since it can be stated quickly and easily explained with skills learned from this text.

This book is for Honor Students or students who are ambitious in learning mathematics. Not only that, for ambitious teachers who expect the best and want to give the best for his or her students.

Personally, I was a bit hesitant about using this text, but in taking the risk I found that students really learned and stayed sharp throughout the course of their studies. Even for those student that weren't too excited about math found this text as a great resource.

However, I must stress this point again: This text is very ambitious...and it takes an ambitious student to truly reap from it's richness and also an ambitous--truly courageous teacher to teach from it.

In summary this text is excellent, fast-paced, and has lots of great real-life problems. I love this text...but I must admit it's not for everyone.

For more slower paced book, I recommend Hosteller's Intermediate Algebra. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, highly-focused and useful review for calculus
I'd taken Calculus ten years ago and needed to retake it. After working through 'Forgotten Algebra', this book was a godsend. It's B.S.-free and highly focused on what you need BEFORE Calculus. If you buy the first edition used (as I did), then it's cheap.

These guys are geniuses for presetnting complex information in a digestable, direct, witty, and accurate manner. Great for remembering forgotten trig and algebra. Awesome calc primer.

I salute a rare erudite math professor who can actually teach. Where can we find more? My school is full of passive aggressive math professors who know their stuff but cant teach.

thank you for the help

5-0 out of 5 stars If Jesus and Buddha collaborated on a calculus text...
this is what you'd get. This book is great. It's based on the theory that most of the problems that students have with calculus is not the calculus itself but the aspects of algebra and trig involved in performing calculus problems. One of the greatest features of this text is that it is not written in "mathnese." The author's, two math professors from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, explain concepts in plain English. All the rules and proceedures one needs to know are clearly explained and then followed by a series of exercises that are actually relevant. (A first!) I cannot express how impressed am I with this book any more. If you don't like the book, send it to me; I'll eat it. ... Read more

Here's a complete, easy-to-grasp course in trigonometry that takes the form of a fantasy novel. The King of Carmorra and his subjects have many practical problems to solve, and their answers can be found by applying principles of trigonometry. Readers follow along and learn to solve many different problems that can be reduced to triangular diagrams. They learn the laws of sine and cosine, trigonometric functions and inverse functions, waves, conic sections, polynomial approximation, and much more. The book is filled with instructive exercises and their solutions, plus illustrative drawings, graphs, and diagrams. This new edition contains updated coverage on using graphing calculators and computer spreadsheets for solving trigonometric problems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Decent Book
I think Trigonometry the Easy Way is a fairly good book. I read it, it made sense to me, and the storyline was rather interesting. It does have some problems: The exercises at the end of each chapter are much harder than what was covered in the main part of the chapter, there are relatively few examples, and the principles of trigonometry are introduced in an unclear way. An example of this is, "Will you get sick to the subject!" Recordis cried. You always go off on tangents!" "Very well," the king declared. "We will call the other ratio the tangent ratio." Overall it was pretty good book for people wanting to learn trigonometry in a fun way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trigonometry The Easy Way
This book is terrific! My friend, a lifelong math-phobe, was making a last-ditch effort to pass Trigonometry -- the final class she needed in order to graduate with her Bachelor of Science degree. She was trying again for the third time (both her previous attempts had ended in WPs) when she found Trigonometry The Easy Way. The biggest problem she was having was this: while the college textbook gave the formulas, it didn't give her the "why" that she needed in order to understand when the formulas needed to be applied. Memorizing formulas is one thing; understanding when to use them is quite another. She and I (a reknowned math-moron) formed a study group, using Trig The Easy Way. We found that it filled the gaps, allowing both of us to gain a basic understanding of the reasons behind trig. It's written in a simple, fun, storybook-style, and it explains the practical reasons behind the formulas, not just the dry calculations. By using Trig The Easy Way in conjunction with her textbook, my friend passed her class. She made a B, in what had previously been an impossible subject. I can't recommend this book highly enough for people needing a simple way to understand a difficult subject. And in fact, now that she's studying for her doctorate in psychology, she's planning on buying a copy of Statistics The Easy Way, too. You can't argue with success.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't you dare buy this book!
This is by far the worst workbook I have ever encountered. I would give this piece of crapp "negative infinity stars" just to express my anger, if it were possible. I have spent a month and a half of my summer studying for trig using this book which ended up as a waste of effort and, most importantly, time. The summer is the only time where can I boost my brain and get ahead of everybody, and even sometimes become smarter than the teachers (hee!hee!).
The thing that annoys me the most was the blasted organization of this book. The stupid fairy tale was the entire gist than learning trig. Each chapter was focused on a dilemma faced by the king and his servants, and hardly anything about trig. It took me 3-4 days just to interpret each chapter due to these: the lack of examples, the lack of practice following the lesson before the new stuffs are taught (I call it "try it"), the tone is for a 8 year old (hey, wow! a 8 year is learning trig), and learning the materials can be a toil since the informations are, rather than stated directly like most workbooks, implied in the story, meaning you will waste time rereading the stupidstory again and again trying to comprehend it. Another thing, you have to understand the story in order to actually learn trig in T.E.W (who said that!).
Mr. Douglas A. Downing has written a pain in the head. Why does he have to teach us trig by the usage of a gay fairy tale. He could have taken an easier turn by just teaching trig directly to us instead of deriving ways to make the story relevant to trig, then we are more into the story (a reason why I didn't purchase Calculus the Easy Way). You have to give him credit for being creative but all his works just turned out to be B.S. Maybe he was on crack. One thing is for certain, I will never purchase anything with the name Douglas A. Downing on it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Trigonometry the easy way
This book was not that helpful to me. I have had trigonometry before and purchased this book as a refresher. There are very few examples throughout the text, which makes it very difficult to solve the exercises at the end of each chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Story Line is Distracting
The story line is the distracting part of the book. If I wanted to read a fantasy book, I would have bought one. When I want to learn trig, I don't want a book that tries to amuse you with a sideshow, I just want the bare facts laid out in an easy to follow format, which this book does not have. I got bored with dumb story and quit reading the book altogether. ... Read more

I was a math/stat student in college.I bought this book to review for the CSET test (prerequisite for teaching math in California). It was an excellent review of most subjects covered on the test. The examples were excellent and the problems were excellent. It even taught me how to use a Ti-82 calculator. It may not be as good for someone who has never had precalculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, methodical approach for the self-taught
I teach myself a lot from books. Some books provide little, some a lot. With this book you walk away with a usable knowledge of trigonometry AND invaluable knowledge of how your calculator performs mathematical operations.
I've tok trig in high school, but the subject wasn't presented in such an organized and methodical approach. The overview in Chapter 1 provided insights that eluded me in high school. Chapter 2 provided detailed knowledge of my pocket computer and knowledge of it's use to solve trig problems that I never realized before. The examples and solutions provide feedback that the lessons were learned and owned. The subsequent chapters methodically build consistent, solid, usable knowledge. Mr. Abbot continually enables you to compare table-based calculations with your calculator calculations, building your confidence in your ability to do both. IF you've wrestled with other approaches to learning trig, this is THE book to get you through it.
I have read Mr. Abbott's Calculus book and find his approach conducive to my learning.

1-0 out of 5 stars reader from texas
The book would ahve been good except before you even get into the material very good there are problems with wrong answers or very confusing explantions. If this much is wrong at the beginning what about later in the book when you get into the stuff you don't know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clear discussion but book marred by lots of typos
This book is very well written and a lot of thought was given by the authors as to the presentation of the material and how much background to assume the reader has. I would give the book five stars based on the writing. However, the writers were not well served by the editor, as there are many typos, maybe as many as one every other page. It appears that the proof reading was done by someone without a math background, as many of the errors are obvious, such as an equal sign being omitted, turning an equality into a product. Or the length of the sides of a right triangle being given so that the hypotenuse is not the longest side. Sometimes the answers to questions are messed up, which is very frustrating. Hopefully when the book is republished, it will be given the care it deserves. ... Read more

Book Description

In Hecht's groundbreaking book, you'll find real-life applications, an unparalleled art and photography program, a presentation that anticipates students' questions, and an approach that emphasizes contemporary physics while interweaving historical perspectives. Hecht's coverage of classical physics is clear and insightful. He shows students how 21st-century physics illuminates the classical topics of each chapter, adding excitement to the subject matter. Over 1,300 illustrations make it possible for students to visualize a diversity of physical phenomena. Many of these are multi-frame, sequential drawings allowing students to comprehend the temporal unfolding of complex events. A selection of sketch art teaches students how to create problem-solving diagrams. This new edition of the text was designed to aggressively address the issue of problem solving for students (guided by contemporary physics education research). To this end Hecht has provided not only his approach to the five-step problem-solving framework but also a wide range of new problems and solutions specifically designed to build student capability and confidence. ... THis is an excellent book...but you really have to be committed to learn anything (esp. Physics). You can't expect to just read through once and understand everything. This book makes the reader think deeply about physical concepts, but again, you have to be committed to grasp them throughly. It is a very interesting book.Excellent resource for to-be-researchers.In fact, it introduces the reader to very interesting facts about different researcher.I used to read it like a story book (some chapters took about a day to read) but i enjoyed it.If you want to learn physics and want to learn it with an open mind, this is the best book.I have taken an engineering physics course also and their book was very boring and confusing compared to this one.so..enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Students Beware!!!!
I bought this book for a class and was hoping it would help me through it, since my teacher was not the best.It just made it more confusing. The book is littered with information, just too much for a person taking algebra based physics. Most people taking Algebra based physics need a step-by-step approach at learning the subject matter. This book does a poor job at doing so.The concepts are not clear and concise, and fails when attempting to outline major equations. The problems in the back have answers for the odd problems, but how do we access answers to the even problems?Where's the student solution manual? It adds much difficulty to the learning process.Wouldn't recommend it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars precalc-demana etal
The topics in this text have enough breadth to cover
Functions (algebraic, transcendentals, etc) and their Graphs.

One typical feature that is extremely disturbing is the fact that the authors decided to throw in mathematical terms without
defining them first. For instance, as early as Chapter 1.2,
the term "lim f(x) as x approaches ***" is introduced so that
the graphical concept "continuity" can be taught.
There is much more to
limits than just "plotting the graph, seeing where the curve goes". The purpose of PreCalc as suggested by its name is to prepare the students to take Calculus. And if we do not want to
cover some concepts correctly (algebraically and graphically - the motto of this text!) but only to do it in a touchy-feely sense, then please do NOT cover it in PreCalc. Do it in Calculus!

The only reason I ever used this is because someone else chose it for our multiple sections course! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader from Paradise, Texas
I personally have tried the formulas for square roots and higher roots and have been successful at obtaining accurate answers. Although these formulas are difficult and mistakes can easily be made, they are accurate if one is careful and pays attention to detail. Although the dot used in the formula is a separator and not a decimal. This may be the cause of inaccurate answers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Faulty
Disappointing! At first glance this book does have lots potential in terms of simplifying concepts and formulas, but it is loaded with mistakes - not only in the answer sections, but also regarding some of the methods. I applied their "Method for Finding Square Roots" to numbers other than the given examples, and it did not work. This is not a good buy - even if one merely needs a refresher in math.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics made simple
This is a helpful math book,it covers a lot of subjects from basic math to some pretty difficult topics. My only problem with it is that there are a bunch of wrong answers in the "answer" section, but it just made me hunt and work that much harder to find the correct answers.I hope they do a revision of this book because I would like to give it as a gift, but not at this time with all the mistakes in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great review - lousy math
Nice review of basic math principles, but there are an incredible number of mistakes in the answer section in the back of the book. Really confusing.

3-0 out of 5 stars It would be good, if it weren't for the wrong answers
Overall, the book seems to be a good, quick overview of math. Great if you've been out of school for a while. But it's tarnished by the unbelievable number of wrong answers in the back of the book. Math is an absolute, either right or wrong. How can these errors be allowed in a MATH book? ... Read more
