This volume deals both with the finite-dimensional and the compact theorems about triangularization. It is designed to appeal to two different audiences. The first four chapters should be of interest to linear-algebraists and other algebraists (e.g. people interested in finite-dimensional representations) who use algebras or semigroups of matrices. These chapters include new appraoches to some results that are widely used, as well as recent developments and extensions. The remaining chapters concerned with the structures of linear operators on Banach spaces will attract operator theorists. The most satisfactory results are obtained for algebras and semigroups of compact operators. These theorems, based on the funamental work of Lomonsov and Ringrose of twenty-five years ago, are all quite recent. I cannot believe how much I paid for this book!
Sullivan's "College Algebra" is a mish-mash of material, very little of which has any relevance to the questions at the end of each section. I am extremely upset that my university changed to this text, as it is vastly inferior to our previous book. There are no examples of key points that are needed to complete homework. What explanations that are available are hard to decipher, much less understand. This text should not be allowed to be used in any classroom, college or high school.

A good start...
This book covers algebra very well. It is a simple, easy to understand text that most students seem to be able to grasp. It's main attribute is that it treats college algebra simply and does not scare students away. This book is also a good place to start if you are attempting to self teach.

College Algebra
I have a mathematics degree and have taught high school math. Recently, I tutored a college student. I was disappointed with this text. The examples were too few and not specific enough for the problems assigned.
