I like this book a lot. In first few chapters it includes a short but enough introduction about Labview. It is easy to read and to follow.

This is not a magical book which can teach you LabView from zero level to advanced one quickly. Don't expect miracles. However, if you are intended to perform DAQ with LabView, I higly recommend you to read this book with some other LabView books. This book does not go into very detail of DAQ VI's but give you some insight which may be the best for the beginning but not enough for advanced applications.

Don't forget, it takes time and effort to perform a good job for your application.

As a long-time LabVIEW programmer, I know how easy it is to create rich, graphical user interfaces with LabVIEW. I also know how frustrating it is to have an end user sit down in front of my LabVIEW masterpiece and not have a clue of what to do. In his easy to read style, Dave explains effective user interface design and how to apply it to test and measurement.

I've been programming for about two years. Most of my training in Labview is by trial-and-error and reading the examples that came with Labview. I've written over 3 dozen programs for my present employer.

As for books, I have many of them. This book in particular, is aimed to the advanced user. Don't expect to learn how to write programs with this book. For a graphical programming language, this book has very little graphics or pictures.

What you can expect is to hone your applications so that they are easier for the end user, easier to maintain and separates 'working' VIs from 'expert' VI. Many little tricks in this book (such as setting preferences, using state machines, and yes, Active X) will make your applications run faster with less overhead.

If you're looking for a book to show you more programming techniques, with actual examples, I'd opt for Essick's "Advanced LabVIEW Labs" (an intermediate book) or Johnson's "LabVIEW Graphical Programming" (more advanced). If you're looking for ways to separate yourself from programmers that make 'working' VIs, then this book by Bitter et al. is for you.

This is an excellent intro into some of the advanced features of LV. It covers basic features, state machines (one of the best chapters), application structure, drivers, exception handling, multithreading, OOP, and unfortunately Active X (chpaters to skip). The info is excellent, and I think it is well worth the cost and time to read. It also comes with a great CD.

The only bad part is more than 20% of the book is devited to Active X. This is a huge kick in the pants to platform independence. While I am working on NT (by force, not by choice) I try to avoid any technonogy that supports ... you know, the M word.

An excellent book for LabVIEW program designers and programmers! Especially for LabVIEW users with several years experience and try to learn more new software techniques. The authors introduced many concepts and techniques in C/C++ such as ActiveX, COM, DCOM etc. The OOA, OOD and design pattern are also combined with LabVIEW programming. There are many useful examples in the book. I recommend this book to all LabVIEW users.

I didn't find this book helpful at all. It is neither for beginners nor for advanced Labview programmers. If you are somewhere in middle and want to enjoy reading a book about labview like reading a fiction, this may be the right book for you.

If you are really looking for a book which you really need to learn something about Labview, this book is not that one. Continue your search!

I didn't really find this book all that useful in learning labview, in fact national instruments free seminars/adverts were much better. The manual also seems to help more. If you are going to use the latest labview 7, a lot of this info will be superfluos due to the wizards. I am however no labview expert, but i would defintely recommend checking this out in a bookshop first, as i was disapointed.

I've purchased all three editons of Gary Johnson's LabVIEW book and haven't been disappointed yet. This is one of those rare books that lives up to its hype. The writing is clear and engaging, without condescending to the more advanced user. If you're using or learning LabVIEW, check this book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Especially for the Working Person
For those of you who do not have this book, this book is one of the top Labview books available. It goes very quickly through the basics, and focuses more on building actual applications in Labview. Many pointers on how to maximize resources are through out this book. It saved me many hours of trial and error. The book reads as if an articulate person is speaking to you. Very no nonsense.

For example, there's a comprehensive chapter on actually developing a Labview VI for use. It goes through the requirements, the development (internally and also the user interface) and the release of the VI. Further, it has a nice section on DAQ.

This book is more or less a rehash of the old book, with some upgrades, but for those who don't have the old one, read it's reviews. I wasn't terribly disappointed with the omission of Labview 6i stuff, since the content extended beyond it. You'll be making a good investment in this book.

I gave this book 3 stars because it's still a useful resource for those who are interested in LabVIEW. However, I wouldn't recommend buying it if you have the previous version and don't wish to pursue the creation a real time LabVIEW application on an embedded Linux platform. There really is little, if any, mention of some of the new, interesting features of LabVIEW 6 which to me was a major let down, such as control references and the like. The examples included with the book on the CD Rom aren't incredibly useful or new for that matter, but could be of some benefit to a new user. Overall, if you're new to LabVIEW and have never seen the previous version of this book I'd recommend it, but if you have the older version I wouldn't be too inclined to recommend it for anything rather than the detailed information in the latter chapters regarding LabVIEW RT and Linux. ... Analysis of repeated measurement data is commonplace in clinical trials and there is a great body of literature and books on the repeated measures analysis using linear models. The many fine texts on repeated measure linear models are often found with the term longitudinal data analysis because the repeated measurements are given over time. As Davidian and Giltinan point out htere is a need for nonlinear models in the case of pharmacokinetics trials. The theory is new and is presented here in a text for the first time. The authors provide many real applications from their experience. They present a good mix of theory and applications. Thorough references to the literature are given. Even though the development is new the authors do treat the computational aspects. Software implementation for Bayesian Hierarchical models is also mentioned. SAS macros that have been developed are also covered. The methodology is developed in the first eight chapters with applications and case studies in Chapters 9-11. Chapter 12 provides open problems to interest researchers. It contains useful information for practitioners but requires mathematical sophistication. ... Read more

This book is one of the best book covering measurement and sensors. The book cover almost any sensor you think of, describe it function (the background physics) and then explain how it work with some application in software. This book must have for any one working with sensor (engineers, physicist...). the book start explaining it material assuming no prior knowledge for the reader which make it much easier and easy to follow up, start from simple point to explain and then get more complicated with mathematics applied for that particular sensor. I have a degree on physics and I believe this book is a good reference even in physics and I enjoy this book so much. It is a lot fun to read for professional or even for any reader. Any time I was searching for more information about specific sensor this book never turn me down. I had read all of the manuals that came with LabVIEW, but still needed something more to get me over the initial learning curve; something to answer the "Why should I do it that way?" questions .vs. the "Here's how to do it." The latter part of "LabVIEW for Everyone" did just that, in addition to providing more detail in how to perform basic operations.

I've been programming data acquisition systems for a long time and was daunted by the scope of learning yet another programming language. LabView product literature seemed difficult to understand. But, with the help of LabView for Everyone, I got into the project quickly and get results immediately. The book is easy to read, sometimes cutsey, but filled with good examples that work! They point out pitfalls, problem areas, and provide examples of how-to for many situations (for example, why the wires are different colors and sizes; common errors that result from broken wires, and so forth). Their examples were invaluable for getting my project done in a reasonable amount of time. I'd strongly recommend this book for people faced with getting going with LabView. I developed my project typing with one hand and leafing through this book with the other. I guess it saved me 4 weeks of work. That alone makes it worth the price, several-fold. ... Read more

I read this book to get ready to take my Texas Irrigation License exam. It explained how to properly install a professional quality sprinkler system in an easy to read and understand format. This book goes into detail about how to layout the sprinkler heads, how to pipe it all together, and how all the parts work together. I have read many irrigation books...This was the best book to get a good understanding of sprinkler systems without becoming an expert in the field of irrigation. Perfect for the do it yourself homeowner or individual wanting to get into the irrigation industry. I now have my license and highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn to install a good sprinkler system without having to read an irrigation reference manual.

Ray Carroll and David Ruppert are well known research statisticians who have published many joint articles on regression, weighted regression and transformation and they have also written an excellent book together on this research topic. Stefanski has recently published several papers on measurement error models with Carroll. Here they have teamed up to write a statistics text on a unique topic. Measurement error models are common and practical when dealing with covariates that have measurement error. Least squares estimation in linear regression is based on the assumption that the predictor variables are measured without error. There are many articles and an excellent text by Fuller "Measurement Error Models", published by Wiley in 1988 that deals with the linear case. Also look at a section in Chapter 5 of Miller's "Beyond ANOVA, Basics of Applied Statistics" that refers to the problem as the error in variables problem. For the nonlinear case this is the first treatment. Well written and well documented, this text provides an up-to-date account of the theory and methods and provides real applications (e.g. the Framingham Heart Study). This is a great reference as are many of the other monographs in this series by Chapman and Hall/CRC Press. Includes bootstrap approaches in the chapter on fitting methods and models. ... Read more

This is a very readable text that essentially parallels and expands upon the LabView Users Manuals. If you have read through all or most of those manuals you may find yourself rapidly skimming through Bishop's book as nothing more than a refresher. Newbies will appreciate the simplistic step-by-step approach but anyone beyond the basics will likely be disappointed. BTW, you can download the related files from the LabView site to get an idea of the content.

This is a really great book! However, there is also a package of CD and book which I do not see offered here. The CD includes LabVIEW Student Edition. The referenced .vi's (virtual instruments) are available for download but, not the complete CD. I have been unable to locate the CD individually, only in bundled packages.

After reading all pages of this book and practicing all programs and exercises inside it within a few weeks, I become a proficient in Labview and I can develop any project easily. The only thing missing of this book is its CD which has all of its examples, but one can download it from its official website without any problem. Overall this book is great for any one who is new in labview and also for any one who doesnot have any programming skills and going to use it within his/her job.

This book is a fantastic hands-on introduction to LabView, probably the best book on this topic a beginner can find. It is extremely clearly written, very well edited (i.e., there are practically no mistakes), and it has excellent illustrations for each step in the process of building VIs.

The book was developed by the author as a student manual for the class he taught. However, it is written so well that I do not understand why a student who has such a book needs an instructor at all. It consists of 12 chapters, all very practical. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the LabView interface and its editing tools and introduces very simple VIs illustrating the while loop and the waveform chart. Chapters 2 through 8 teach increasingly complicated VIs which utilize the waveforem graph, XY graph, For loop, Formula node, operations with data files and character strings, shift registers, and case and sequence structures. The reader learns how to create arrays of data, perform mathematical operations on them, save them in files and read from files, and how to plot them. There are many practical tips how to navigate the LabView interface quickly and efficiently. Chapters 8 and 9 introduce the advance analysis VIs (included only in the "full" but not in the "base" labview package) and demonstrate how to program nonlinear least squares fitting and Fast Fourier Transform. Finally, the last 3 chapters teach programming of data acquisition boards - analog to digital conversion (digitizing oscilloscope), digital to analog conversion (PID temperature control), and GPIB control of instruments. While the book covers only the essentials of labview, the topics covered and the examples presented are extremely useful, and they all a must to know to program in LabView.

The book comes without a CD, but it is not necessary as the book describes the process of building of each VI so accurately and in so detailed way that it is very easy to follow the guidelines.

The book came out in 1999 and most likely was written using LabView 4. Three more versions of LabView came out since that time. It turned out that using it with newer versions of LabView is quite straightforward. The small changes that were introduced after the version 4 sometimes make it necessary to change the VIs slightly, but it is easy to figure out what changes are required using the error messages and LabView help. For instance, newer versions of LabView require that the conditional terminal in the While loop be wired; Replace Array Element is now called Replace Array Subset; there is no need to construct Global Variables using a while loops' shift registers (although it is interesting to learn how this can be done), etc. I counted only 10 small changes which had to be done to the programs on the first 220 pages of the book - and no errors or typos whatsoever!

To run the programs in Chapters 1-7 any LabView version will do; to run the programs in Ch. 8 and 9 one needs "Full" package (the "base" one does not contain the advanced analysis VIs); and finally, for the last 3 chapters one needs a computer with DAQ and GPIB boards. However, the book is so well written that you can read the text,look through the VI diagrams, and learn from this even if you do not have the proper software or hardware.

The book is very detailed, but at the same time everything that is in there is necessary; there are no off-topic discussions or jokes - almost 400 pages of straight-to-the-topic presentation.

The bottom line is that it is a fantastic introduction to LabView for beginners, which I can highly recommend. Well deserved five stars - and an example for the other authors how such books should be written!

I needed a new software platform for data acquisition following the demise of an older platform. All of my friends at various national laboratories were using LabVIEW so it was a natural choice. I then started looking for a "directed tutorial" that would get me up to speed for data acquisition without first mastering the vast multitude of LabVIEW features (until I really needed them). I found Essick's book to be head and shoulders above the other novice-level books I tried (which were helpful but were taking too long). My undergraduate research students now first encounter LabVIEW with the guidance of this clear, concise, and well-written book. It would also be my first choice as a textbook for a class on LabVIEW (or on data acquisition techniques in general). I recommend this book very highly.

I bought the book last week and since then I can't stop reading it and going through the well presented Labs. I find the book very interesting, well written ,to the point and clear. It will get you up to speed with Labview quickly. I own other Labview books but this is the only one that I didn't find boring or confusing. This is definitely a book I would recommend to all the students who want to learn Labview in a short period of time and also to the instructors; it can be a great teaching tool !
