Tired of looking through books to find the correct conversion factor to another unit?Well, so was I.Since I deal with international engineering contracts, this book saves a great deal of time.It is extremely well formatted and easy to use. This book not only has the usual units, but also Japanese, and ancient systems as well. You won't need any other book - ever. The author challenges you to find a unit not listed, and send it to him for inclusion in the next edition. That alone should give you an idea of how thorough it is!This is a must for any technical field.Well organized, and well worth the price of the book.A real bargin. Also, fun to read.It gives the approved units for various systems, and states which ones are on the phase-out.Good to know if you are doing technical writing, and need to keep your units within the standards listed. ... Book Description

A groundbreaking look at the nature of quantum mechanics

With new technologies permitting the observation and manipulation of single quantum systems, the quantum theory of measurement is fast becoming a subject of experimental investigation in laboratories worldwide. This original new work addresses open fundamental questions in quantum mechanics in light of these experimental developments.

Using a novel analytical approach developed by the authors, Quantum Measurement of a Single System provides answers to three long-standing questions that have been debated by such thinkers as Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg, and Schrodinger. It establishes the quantum theoretical limits to information obtained in the measurement of a single system on the quantum wavefunction of the system, the time evolution of the quantum observables associated with the system, and the classical potentials or forces which shape this time evolution. The technological relevance of the theory is also demonstrated through examples from atomic physics, quantum optics, and mesoscopic physics.

Suitable for professionals, students, or readers with a general interest in quantum mechanics, the book features recent formulations as well as humorous illustrations of the basic concepts of quantum measurement. Researchers in physics and engineering will find Quantum Measurement of a Single System a timely guide to one of the most stimulating fields of science today.

Book Description

"How much does it weigh?" seems a simple question. To scientists and engineers, however, the answer is far from simple, and determining the answer demands consideration of an almost overwhelming number of factors. With an intriguing blend of history, fundamentals, and technical details, the Handbook of Mass Measurement sets forth the details of achieving the highest precision in mass measurements. It covers the whole field, from the development, calibration, and maintenance of mass standards to detailed accounts of weighing designs, balances, and uncertainty. It addresses the entire measurement process and provides in-depth examinations of the various factors that introduce error.Much of the material is the authors' own work and some of it is published here for the first time. Jones and Schoonover are both highly regarded veterans of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. With this handbook, they have provided a service and resource vital to anyone involved not only in the determination of mass, but also to the entire field of precision measurement. ... Read more

Book Description

The amazing accuracy in verifying quantum effects experimentally has recently renewed interest in quantum mechanical measurement theory. In this book the authors give within the Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics a systematic exposition of the quantum theory of measurement. Their approach includes the concepts of unsharp objectification and of nonunitary transformations needed for a unifying description of various detailed investigations. The book addresses advanced students and researchers in physics and philosophy of science. In this second edition Chaps. II-IV have been substantially rewritten. In particular, an insolubility theorem for the objectification problem has been formulated in full generality, which includes unsharp object observables as well as unsharp pointers. ... Read more

Book Description

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Spin Resonance was a physics phenomenon discovered 52 years ago. Since then, the applications of this discovery to spectroscopy technology has advanced and spread into all areas of the Natural and Life sciences. Yet the techniques remain relatively new still to the Asia-Pacific regions. The Symposium of EPR/ESR (20-24 January 1997, Hong Kong) is the first of its kind to be held in Asia and aims to bring the state-of-the-art knowledge of EPR to end-users of this technology in this region, as well as knowledge on the related areas of Acoustic Paramagnetic Resonances (APR), Zero-field EPR (ZPR), Electron Nuclear Double Resonance (ENDOR), Optically Detected Magnetic Resonances (ODMR), and Electron Spin Echo Modulation (ESEM). These proceedings will contain the invited papers of over 10 international speakers as well as contributed papers. It will be a useful reference source for EPR spectroscopists, students and researchers interested in the applications of EPR, scientific officers and/or managers from relevant industries, and medical staff and health officers from hospitals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get a sense of all the measures and scales
This is a fun book to read, and must have been a fun book to write. There are two parts in the book. Part I consists of 14 interesting essays, answering the questions such as: What would Santa Claus have to do to deliver all his presents in one night? Which celestial body is equal in volume to 54,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Big Macs? How loud must a noise be to have lethal effects? How hot would Hell be and how cold would Hell have to be before it froze over? What is the amount of air pressure required to burst a condom? Part II defines and explains all sorts of common and uncommon measures and scales, with lots of tables, illustrations and interesting examples.

My favorite essay is: How many jumping Chinese does it take to start an earthquake?

This book gives the readers a new understanding of all the measures and scales, in a very witty way. That's all I have to say about this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Nanoscale Probes of the Solid--Liquid Interface deals with the use of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) and related instrumentation to examine the phenomena occurring at the interface between solid and liquid.Scanning probe microscopy (the collective term for such instruments as the STM, the atomic force microscope and related instrumentation) allows detailed, real space atomic or lattice scale insight into surface structures, information which is ideally correlated with surface reactivity. The use of SPM methods is not restricted to ultrahigh vacuum: the STM and AFM have been used on samples immersed in solution or in ambient air, thus permitting a study of environmental effects on surfaces. At the solid--liquid interface the reactivity derives precisely from the presence of the solution and, in many cases, the application of an external potential.Topics covered in the present volume include: the advantages of studying the solid--liquid interface and the obtaining of additional information from probe measurements; interrelationships between probe tip, the interface and the tunnelling process; STM measurements on semiconductor surfaces; the scanning electrochemical microscope, AFM and the solid--liquid interface; surface X-ray scattering; cluster formation on graphite electrodes; Cu deposition on Au surfaces; macroscopic events following Cu deposition; deposition of small metallic clusters on carbon; overpotential deposition of metals; underpotential deposition; STM on nanoscale ceramic superlattices; reconstruction events on Au(ijk) surfaces; Au surface reconstructions; friction force measurements on graphite steps under potential control; and the biocompatibility of materials. ... Book Description

This book explores a little-studied arena that exists between science and technology, an arena in which a singular and important variety of open-ended, multi-purpose instrumentation is developed by practitioners (neither scientist nor engineer, call them research-technologists) for use in academia, industry, state metrology and technical services, and considerably beyond. The generic instrumentation designed in this almost subterraneously institutionalized/professionalized, interstitial arena fuels both science and engineering work. This involves intermittent crossings of the boundaries that demarcate and protect the conventional cognitive and artefact cultures familiar to many historians and sociologists. Research-technologists thereby comprise a distinctive (but never distinct) transverse science and technology culture that generates a species of pragmatic universality, which in turn provides multiple and diversified audiences with a common repertory of vocabularies, notational systems, images, and perhaps even paradigms. Research-technology practitioners deliver a lingua franca that contributes to cognitive, material, and social cohesion. Research-technology is about the complementarity between boundary-crossing and the stability/maintenance of boundaries. ... Read more

This one book covers alot of ground in enought detail to keep most of us happy...I havent found a single source which covers all the main bases this well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative book - wider than title implies
This book not only covers temperature trace ability but also covers subjects like how a temperature sensor's construction will affect the long-term stability of measurements. However information about how the associated measurement equipment is constructed and how it affects the long-term temperature measurement stability is not thoroughly discussed.

Some parts of the trace ability aspect are limited, for example, how error tolerance build up affects the finial specs, which can be claimed.

Good introductory book, easy to read. ... Read more
