5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey for everyone!
Hockey for Dummies is the most comprehensive guide to the sport that I have ever read. Outstanding insight and thought by the author JD who knows the game inside and out, provides accurate and in-depth commentary about the sport. If you're just learning or want to learn about the fast and furious sport of Hockey, this book is a must. I keep mine next to the television remote during games to refer to the rules and plays section! Game ON!

2-0 out of 5 stars Truth in Advertising
Like all the "For Dummies" books, this is a good purchase if you really don't know anything about the subject. I think there's a place for these books. They're a good for absolute beginners who want to get started. They can also help you decide if you like something enough to find out more about it. It's just that they're not that cheap and I think they almost always leave you wanting more.

If you know anything about hockey, you'll probably find much of this book useless or uninteresting. There are better books on how to play hockey (like Percival's Hockey Handbook) and about the sport (like Total Hockey) out there that are worth buying. You'll probably skim this book quickly and never pick it up again.

If you're just learning, this will give you all the basics along with a few bits of interesting information. Still, I'll bet you don't read this thing more than once. There are better books to get into the various aspects of hockey as a player, parent of a player, or fan.

I'd recommend this book to someone who just wants to watch hockey and have some idea what's going on...although finding a friend who can tell you is probably better and will only cost you a beer or two. If this book were cheaper or went a bit further I'd recommend it to more people. As it is, all I can say is with the title right on the front of the book you can't say they lied to you!

PS: This review isn't meant as a slam to the authors who I think did a good job. It's just a problem with this series or format. It serves a purpose, just a very narrow one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hockey? Not for me, thank you.
I got this book as a gift. Boy, this person doesn't know me very well. I don't like hockey. And this book doesn't help matters. Not at all. Its boring, and there are no interesting characters or plotlines. These guys that wrote this book clearly tried hard to write an informative book. I guess I recommend it for people who are interested in hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good book for beginers and old fans alike
this book was suprisingly very good. I really liked that it had a work out to follow and tips on playing from the pros to get you started playing hockey. It is also imformative for new hockey fans and fans like myself who have loved the game for some years now

4-0 out of 5 stars No Longer a Dummy!
Hockey For Dummies was incredibly helpful when my son began playing the sport and we ended up getting so hooked that we started attending collegiate as well as professional hockey games. Nothing like a bunch of new hockey moms inquiring, "what is icing?" to which another replies, "it's something you put on a cake."

The book's format was very easy to follow, so no matter what you want to learn (penalties, history, etc.) you will be able to get a no-nonsense answer to your inquiry. Understanding something about the sport makes it much more enjoyable to watch. I was particularly impressed with the guidelines for watching the games in person versus the televised ones. ... Book Description

Fred Shero, the head coach of the teams forever remembered as the "Broad Street Bullies," chose the hours before Game 4 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals to inscribe this on the locker room blackboard: "Win together now and we walk together forever." Well, of course, that team went on to win not one, but two Stanley Cups. Shero could not have been more prophetic.

Thirty years later, members of those Cup teams are still revered in the city of Philadelphia and throughout the hockey world, for that matter. In Walking Together Forever: The Broad Street Bullies Then and Now author Jim Jackson wants to bring people back to those glorious days of the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup championships through the telling of so many of the incredible anecdotes that emanated from the many memorable characters that created the glory. Walking Together Forever: The Broad Street Bullies Then and Now will follow the major principals of the Cup wins, taking readers through the remainder of those heroes’ hockey careers, into retirement, and up to the present. Many of the stories of their personal trials, travails, and successes since hoisting Lord Stanley’s Cup are as compelling as those from the championship years themselves. In the eyes of hockey fans, members of those teams have indeed "walked together forever." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I actually bought this book from the Dan Bylsma WEB site. THe book was sent autographed to my son for this past Christmas. Most of the content is directed toward kids interested in playing hockey and who have questions from how do I do a certain drill to what if my parents are embarrasing me. My 8 year old enjoyed the book very much and continues to read it again and again. I still pick it up as well. If you haven't read the first book "So Your Son Want's to Play in the NHL", another great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey With A Purpose
After receiving the book, I read it throughout the day as opportunity presented itself. I hated to put it down when I had other stuff to do. I felt like I was being forced to leave the game before it was over. I was enchanted by the book as if I'd never read it before, thrilled to play a role by helping with it and to be mentioned in this wonderful contribution to amateur hockey. As I read it, I thought about my roles as a father of a young player, as a coach, and as a coaching educator for USA Hockey. Two overwhelming thoughts came to mind as I read the printed version of the book. The truth conveyed by the material and the fact that at times I fall short of the goals conveyed by that truth from a child's perspective. Even though I speak or write about and teach many of these things quite often, I found myself addressing my mistakes in each of my roles as I read the book. But, even as I found myself addressing my mistakes, I was simultaneously using the ideas in the book to reaffirm many of my beliefs or to assimilate these ideas to address issues from a different perspective. And as stated in the book, perseverance is a key to success. Taking responsibility is a key to success. Learning from mistakes or failure is what truly makes you better. "So You Want To Play In The NHL" has given me additional impetus in my goal to constantly strive to improve as a father, a coach and a coaching educator. Thank you for taking the time to inspire even us older hockey guys with a book written for kids, because really, we are all still kids at heart! By addressing the issues from a kid's perspective for kids, I believe you have succeeded in reaching adults as well. The heart of this old kid is much better as a result of the time and effort you have taken to share your thoughts with the hockey world. This new book, "So You Want To Play In The NHL", for kids, and the existing book for adults, "So Your Son Wants To Play In The NHL", set the standards by which all of us in the sporting world should continually strive to achieve. Cordially, Terry Vayda USA Hockey Associate Coach-In-Chief (Southeast District--Florida)

5-0 out of 5 stars required reading
As a coach and someone who knows the personal dedication it takes to achieve life's goals, this book confirms everything I have done in my life and teach to the players on my team. This book is more than a book about hockey. It spells out a recipe for success in life, in and out of hockey(or any team sport for that matter). Every page has something that will inspire you and remind you what is important in life. I am making this book required reading for my team because it confirms everything I have ever said in the locker room and to parents. While this is one man's journey through life to the NHL, the story is one shared by most people in the struggle to define who they are as the grow up and to achieve the goals that they want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan Bylsma's latest literary achievement is a winner
As the father of a 9-year-old, I am delighted that my son has selected Dan Bylsma as one of his role models. Dan (Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the National Hockey League), and his dad's most recent collaborative literary achievement, "So You Want to Play in the NHL" is an honest and straight-forward discussion about Dan's uncompromised determination to become a professional hockey player, is set against a backdrop of objectivity and seemingly insurmountable odds. The book embodies a wonderful and powerful message, that hardword and determination are the cornerstones of personal, as well as professional success. I highly recommend this book to all aspiring young athletes, their coaches, and parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan Bylsma's latest book is a winner
As the father of a 9 year old son, I am proud that my child has selected Dan Bylsma as one of his role models. Dan and his father's latest collaborative literary achivement is an honest and straightforward study of the role of athletics in a young persons life. The fire and passion of competitive sports at the highest level, measured against a backdrop of incalculable odds of achieving professional success is difficult, if not seemingly impossible to reconcile. Nonetheless, Bylsma's book "So you want to play in the NHL" deserves commendation for having done just that. I strongly recommend this book to any parent or child who participates in sports and who is fortunate to have the courage to dream. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Coach's Manual
My son is the head coach of a Tier 1 girls hockey team. This manual has been invaluable for developing plays, systems and a players manual. I highly recommend this to any serious coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
Over-all this was an easy to read and understand book. The special teams aspect of the book lack 5-3's on the power plays and penality killing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning and teaching special teams and systems.
This book is laid out in a well organized easy to read format that explains and describes systems and special teams options for every zone on the ice.

I was dissappointed that 5 on 3's were not spoken of from a power play and a penalty killing perspective. These can win and lose you hockey games. Overall though, it is and will be a good referance book for coaching. ... Read more

    Book Description

The Game is acknowledged as the best hockey book ever written, and as one of the best sports books of all time. More than just a hockey book, it has become an enduring classic—a reflective and provocative look at a life in hockey and at the game itself.

Ken Dryden, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, is recognized as one of the greatest goalies ever to play the game. More than that, he is one of hockey’s most intelligent and insightful commentators. In The Game, Dryden captures the essence of the sport and what it means to all hockey fans.

He gives us vivid and affectionate portraits of the characters—Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard, and coach Scotty Bowman among them—that made the Canadiens of the 1970s one of the greatest hockey teams in history. But beyond that, Dryden reflects on life on the road, in the spotlight, and on the ice, offering up a rare inside look at the game of hockey, and a profoundly personal memoir.

This commemorative edition marks the 20th anniversary of The Game’s original publication, and features a new chapter from Ken Dryden, reflecting on the past two decades in hockey.

Take a journey back to the heart and soul of the game with this timeless hockey classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just hockey
I read this book expecting to read the standard sports book, what I found was a book that was not only about hockey but about life. Even those who are not hardcore hockey fans can appreciate many of the messages and opinions on life.
From the beginning to the end I was caught in the words, it made me think and feel. Reading The Game somehow enriched my life, and I recommend it to all. Ken Dryden was not your average hockey player, he was an intelligent man who will always be known as the man who wrote the greatest book about the game of hockey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dissapointing
Ken Dryden is one impressive individual. There is no doubting that. I was amazed at the quality of the writing in this book. It is literature. I have read quite a few biographies of sports legends, some have been good and some not so good. I was really looking forward to reading this book especially since all of the reviews were so positive. I welcomed the idea of a well written book by an intelligent athlete. But, I regretfully have to say that this book is less intersting than I had hoped. Dryden provides you with a perspective of hockey life that I seriously doubt that you will get from any other human being on the planet. He made me realize how little time I spend analyzing my own life, at least what I believe to be the less important aspects of it. I found myself amazed at how keenly observant he is about the little stuff. But, as much as I appreciate his intellect, I have to say that this book contains a little too much introspection and not enough details about hockey and the players in it to satisfy me. I am glad that I read it and I would recommend it to fans, but I kept waiting for a little something more and it never quite came. This man has some important things to say though about life in general and for that reason alone the book is worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this for lessons on life
Went to Barnes & Noble and read the new chapter in the 20th Anniversary edition of The Game. Ken Dryden is an outstanding writer. People might assume that since he is writing about hockey that's all that there is to this book. Lies! It is about so much more. His take on life is very refreshing. This is one of the few books that I really enjoyed reading recently.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for any tru hockey fan
Ken Dryden, one of the NHL's best goalies, writes about his last year with the 1970's Canadiens, one of the greatest teams in NHL history. He provides more than a day by day account of playing but talks about other aspects of the game. From traveling to playing in his hometown to life as a celebrity and a Canadian, Dryden shows why he should be the Commissioenr of the NHL. If you have ever spent a summer in a rink, driven to a 6AM practice or know the words to "Oh, Canada." then "The Game " is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars unafraid to tell the truth
Ken Dryden has dared to tell us a warts and all account of a career in the NHL. As a hall of fame Goalie he was well postioned to observe the play of his team mates on the ice. Granted special status as the team's goalie he was then well place to observe the team off the ice too. He has written an honest account of the impact of long seasons of play both on himself and his team mates. Most revealing are his observations on specific players including Guy LaFleur, Bobby Orr and Larry Robinson. I wonder if his friendships with these men survived these opinions? Thoroughly recommended for all sports fans even non hockey fans. ... Read more

I had actually been working with Herb Brooks for nearly a year at the time of his untimely death this past Fall on writing a series of motivational/self-help books. You see, Herbie had recently turned down an offer to come back to the Big Apple and coach the New York Rangers again, opting instead to spend more time with his family and doing more motivational speaking - which is what the books were for. So, when I head the horrible news that August 11th, I decided right then and there to turn our project into a memorial. The result is the new book, "Remembering Herbie," a tribute to my friend and mentor.

Several months and nearly 100 interviews later, the book was finished, complete with both warm and fuzzy memories as well as hilarious and riveting stories from Herbie's closest friends, family members, former teammates and former players. The biography chronicles not only the accomplishments and achievements of a man who touched literally millions of lives throughout the sports world, but also a heartfelt story of an amazing person - as told through the eyes of those who knew him best.

People from all spectrums of Herbie's life were interviewed for the book, including former teammates of his from St. Paul Johnson High School, the University of Minnesota and from various U.S. Olympic & National Teams. I also spoke to former players of his from the Gophers, the 1980 & 2002 Olympic Teams, New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins. While some people opened up and poured out their emotions on what Herbie meant to them, others shared heartwarming or hilarious stories. Some laughed, some cried, but they all remembered Herbie.

I found that as I wrote the book and talked to more and more people, a picture emerged of who Herb Brooks really was. The common denominators were fascinating: the way he motivated people, his relentless determination, his honesty, his passion, his integrity, the "Brooksisms" he was so famous for saying, the way he championed the underdog, the way he was always looking to make hockey better, the way he could never make up his mind, and the way he loved his family - it's all in there.

You see, Herb Brooks never forgot where he came from - always remaining loyal to his colorful working-class neighborhood roots on St. Paul's East Side. There, he was like royalty, but if you asked him, he would say that he was just another "Joe Six Pack" from Payne Avenue. That was Herbie, modest as ever. Herbie was the ultimate team player and lived by the adage that the name on the front of the sweater was always more important than the name on the back. Looking back at the now famous last second call from the 1980 Olympic 'Miracle on Ice,' which will forever be linked to his legacy, "Do you believe in miracles?... Yes!" - one can only assume that Herb probably didn't. That's right. Sure, he was a dreamer, but there were no short-cuts or divine interventions for this guy, it was all about hard work, commitment and passion. And luckily for us his obsession was hockey, and through that medium he changed the face of American history.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the newly created "Herb Brooks Foundation," which will benefit amateur hockey throughout the United States.

    Book Description

Simply the Best delivers rare insights on success straight from the hearts and minds of Stanley Cup winning coaches Scotty Bowman, Mark Crawford, Jacques Demers, Ken Hitchcock, and Mike Keenan. The book also features NHL and Olympic coaches Clare Drake, Dave King, George Kingston, Andy Murray, Roger Neilson, Pat Quinn, and Brian Sutter. Recognized as the greatest coaches in the game, these "elite 12" openly discuss in their own words strategies that have made them successful. Coaching wisdom, as never before published, flows from the pages of this remarkable book.

Everyone is a coach—no matter if it’s raising children, coaching a youth sports team, being the project team leader at work, teaching students in a classroom, or managing employees in a corporation. Great coaches have to be able to provide direction and vision, stay on a firm path while also recognizing when change is needed, motivate, maximize the potential of their people, and deal with adversity. As seen here, the coaches’ techniques, strategies, and personalities are varied, but deep down they all have that special something that allows them to be champions while others struggle to attain a similar pinnacle.

These world-renowned hockey visionaries take readers into the players’ dressing room and onto the ice and explain what it takes to be a champion at hockey. But, as readers will see, these mastered principles of coaching success are also relevant "off-ice" so that people in all walks of life, from managers to moms, can win their own Stanley Cups. The 12 coaches in Simply the Best have spent a lifetime in the pursuit of understanding how to win. Now so will you! ... Read more

The most comprehensive guide to the art and science of goaltending

The past decade has seen a tremendous surge of interest in hockey. More colleges and universities have added programs. Hockey leagues are sprouting up in such unlikely places as Florida beach communities, New Mexico desert towns, and the Texas flatlands.

Coauthored by Jim Corsi, goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most comprehensive guide to mastering the most demanding hockey position: goalie. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience at all levels--from peewees to pros--Corsi explores all facets of goaltending. From the psychology of being a goalie to choosing and purchasing the right equipment for an individual's style and needs, to drills for improving timing, coordination, reach, and speed, Corsi covers all the bases with invaluable advice and guidance as well as tips and techniques for aspiring goalies, parents, and hockey coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endorsements
Several testimonials provided to the authors and publisher that are sure to be of interest.

Jim Corsi and John Hannon have written the most comprehensive goalie book I have ever seen. Jim has a great grasp of goaltender coaching and how the goaltending position has radically changed over the last decade. I, too, would encourage young goalies to study the game and learn as much as they can.

    - Dominik Hasek, Buffalo Sabres & Detroit Red Wings

The approach to goaltending that Jim and John describe in this book has helped me understand the position better. As a head coach, I need to know that our goalies are well taken care of. Jim is both well liked and well respected by all of our goalies (from prospects to all-stars). Given the rich content of this book and the authors' attention to the smallest details, it is no wonder Jim is held in such high regard.

    - Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres

In order for me to make the big jumps from major junior to the AHL and then the AHL to the NHL, it became increasingly obvious that I had to expand upon my save skill repertoire. Jim Corsi, applying the concepts he and John Hannon cover in this book, helped me improve and successfully make this transition. If you, too, seek to become a serious student of the goalie position, then read this book cover to cover. It will change your whole philosophy about goaltending and make you more and more effective.

    - Martin Biron, Buffalo Sabres

3-0 out of 5 stars Goaltending by Daccord is better
If you already have or are considering Brain Daccord's Goaltending, then leave this one alone. It's not bad but Daccord's is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me and my coach
Goalies are always looking for help so there coach can help them be better. The book has got good pictures so me and the coach can get along. The cool pictures of the pro goalies are awssome too. My coach says he likes the drills. Its a really good goalie book.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting-edge Goaltending
The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most complete and cutting-edge goaltending resource on the market today. If you're looking for information on the technical aspects of goaltending, Jim Corsi has written one of the most complete and instructive books I have read. The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most progressive and comprehensive analysis of the goaltending position that is required in today's evolution of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for young goalies & their coaches
As any goalie parent knows, most coaches have very little knowledge of what it takes to develop a young goalie. In the eight years since my son, who is now in prep school, started playing goalie, I have constantly looked for a good book that I could recommend to his coaches. This book is the answer. If he were still playing youth hockey, I would buy copies of it for all of his coaches. ... Read more

He won the Hart Trophy (League MVP) six times, the ArtRoss Trophy (most individual points) six times, and appeared in 20 All-Stargames. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Hockey, plain and simple...
I read this book back in November of 1999. The co-author Frank Condron did an excellent job with Gordie Howe in putting this historical book together. On top of the simple fact that a picture is worth 1,000 words. The whole book is a Hockey Pictoral Treasure. Mr. Condron did an excellent job of writing this book. What I mean by that is. Simply because you don't feel your reading Gordies words. Its like Mr. Howe is right next to you and he is pointing at each picture as you turn every page. Also it is quite obvious after all the press, awards and fame, Gordie Howe is still a gentleman.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUE HOCKEY MEMORBILIA!
This work represents the finest photo collection of GORDIE HOWE'S career to date. If YOU are old enough to remember the epic battles between the Montreal Canadians and the Detroit Red Wings of the 1950's-60's, YOU can relive these times in photo concepts - eg. Howe's 545 goal in the Montreal Forum eclipsing Rocket Richards's record and the 15 minute standing ovation by Montreal fans; Howe's commentary on the Montreal dynasty once Jacque Plante and Jean Bellevue arrived on the hockey scene; the skilled fis-ti-cuffs of Gordie Howe against bad boy, Lou Fontinato of the New York Rangers; and Howe's best picks of NHL players he most admired! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for non goalie coaches
This is an excellent book for goalie coaches & coaches at the rep or house league level who require assistance in establishing a training and development program for young player and can be applied to adults as well. I have written a guide for adults as we are built differently. email if u r interested and is for both men & women

5-0 out of 5 stars A great teaching tool for the coach
I've been a hockey goalie during 18 years. Now it's time for me to get involved in a different way... as a coach. The young goaler has a lot to learn and a coach can do a lot of damage if he doesn't communicate properly the techniques. The book is a very good tool for the coach. It describes clearly the basic techniques and there are a lot of pictures that illustrate them. I coach 9 yo kids, and I've been able to use many of the drills described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Head coaches/kids/parents.
This is a very good book for non goalies (parents, coaches & kids starting out to play goal. It provides a good plan for developing skills over a three to four year plan. It is geared for the serious coach (rep) & young goalie, but not for adult beginners. After teaching goaltending for 15 years , I developed a guide for adult beginners men &n women and you can contact me at the email below for other info. The Allaire book is an excellent technical starting point and have used it myself, HOWEVER ADULT BEGINNERS ARE DIFFERENT

5-0 out of 5 stars A-1! I've taught it for 10 years, learned so much !!
Goaltenders seem to be loners on a team, however the position is very simple...One needs to build a strong foundation of skills that are developed in a structured and logical manner. Francois addresses these areas, and provides an A-1 training and development guide to be applied on a season long and year long basis. He also addresses the mental aspects that are so critical to a person playing goal. The one area he does not address adequately is females, ie., different physological builds and some the protective equipment is different. He tends to cater the text to the rep and travel level of team and does not cover the parent/coach/goalie relationship to any degree, however it is a very good book !!. I have read about 10 other books on goaltending, I am writing one for adult beginners as I teach adults 18 to 55 how to play is a treat!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book
The goaltender is the most neglected position on the hockey team. The rationale may be coaches not knowing where to start. Patrick Roys' former mentor Francois Allaire offers a structured program that takes away the guess work involved. The coach follows the program in progression with a purpose instead of just keeping the goalies busy or having them face a barrage of unproductive shots. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I and any other hockey player needed
I had an idea of what I thought nutrition and being in shape was as a hockey player.....until I read this book. I bought this book looking to improve my game and that is exactly what has happened. Peter Twist takes his experience as a National Hockey League conditioning coach and gives us the same advice that he gives the pros. I strongly recommend this book to coaches and all players serious about taking their game to a higher level

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't found a better source for ice hockey conditioning
Peter Twist covers all aspects of conditioning to play hockey regardless of the level of play. He dedicates a significant amount of text to youth hockey players. This book is an essential read for youth hockey coaches, although it can be best applied to high school and above. Athletes that can adopt his methods, including nutritional guidance will have the edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Ice Hockey
This book is fantastic. The book is very complete, from beginning to end on the training and conditioning aspect. Not only did it include the fitness portion, but also nutrition, which I was surprised to see.

My only complaint is that each and every exersize should have photos. Most do, but not all of them. There are some exersizes that are not 100% clear on the proper technique.

    Other than that it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Myriad of Exercises
Peter Twist says it right in the beginning, there is nothing quite like hockey. That makes it really tough to get in shape to play. Even if you're already in great shape, you're game could improve dramatically if you got into hockey shape. That is exactly what Twist tries to do.

The book is organized in such a way that the later chapters build upon the previous chapters. He begins by talking about energy and how we burn fuels different ways when playing hockey. Then he goes into stretching and strength training. If you have ever spent any time around a gym, you'll already know how to perform these movements. The payoff for this book is the plyometric. These are techniques used to help improve your agility and explosive movements. Let's face it, the team that can consistently get to the puck first usually wins. These exercises will provide you with a quick jump giving you an extra step over your opponent and the puck.

Twist writes simply, and his instructions are easy to follow. He uses photos generously when trying to explain complex movements. Both on-ice and off-ice exercises are provided so you don't have to be at the rink or have precious ice time to get into shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book and very thorough
This is a great book. It helped immediately just by reading it, let alone all the drills it includes. Did I mention the drills in the book? There are LOTS of them. Each is explained from a coaches standpoint and a players standpoint. This makes it obvious that this book is good for both the player and the coach. A definate must read if you're learning roller hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner to Expert
Short and sweet, this book is excellent for the beginner as well as the advanced roller hockey player. It clearly presents each and every aspect of the game in a way that everyone can appreciate. I like to touch and feel books when deciding on buying them, but take my word for it, this is an excellent book on Roller Hockey. It is like having a coach available 24 hours a day. It shows skills the beginner can use and drills for advanced players to enhance their play as well. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best roller hockey book for players and coaches
Winning on wheels is the most complete book for drill, strategies from every aspect of the game (Offensive ,defensive, power play ,breakouts etc.). He illustrates very well and is easy to understand. I coach high school teams (J.V. and Varsity). Our team has improved vastly with these book strategies. I also coached a team of 14 year olds to a 3rd place in the NHL Breakout world championships in Tampa florida in Jan. 1999 (Roller Gators). As a coach this book has made me a very good student of the game of roller hockey. Looking forward to buying the next book from Greg

    Book Description

Hockey is booming in the minor pro leagues south of the Mason-Dixon line, with the epicenter being the Texas Sunbelt, home to more pro hockey teams than any other province or state including Ontario and Michigan. Zamboni Rodeo follows the fortunes of the Austin Ice Bats as they wander across Texas, living on junk food and beer, practicing in deserted malls, and navigating slushy ice in too-warm arenas. Writer Jason Cohen joined the team in the locker room between periods, suffered through every lurching bus ride and fog-delayed game, and even spent a night in the penalty box in his quest — hilariously documented here — to know heartland hockey in all its sorry glory. Photographs add to this lively, irreverent ride through the heady world of bush-league hockey. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great title. Very good book.
I enjoyed it, but then I have three sons playing youth hockey.

It's another depiction of the stark truth for anyone dreaming of fame and fortune through athletics. Each of the players portrayed in this true story was outstanding as a kid, but here they are in small towns, far from their homes in the frozen North, playing in front of enthusiastic but mostly oblivious audiences, and worse yet are soon to be retired by minor league hockey's equivalent of term limits. But they're having fun with each other and getting paid. Problem is their fame is fleeting and spread narrow, and their fortune is short-lived and small.

The book is also a good introduction to life on the road for anyone willing to try it for a time, hopefully after laying a solid foundation for the future (college degree or whatever fits the particular kid). The "where are they now" appendix should be sobering for anyone who is college-bound but instead chooses minor league hockey.

There are plenty of funny anecdotes, but it's not a joke book. I couldn't keep the characters straight, maybe since I read it in bits and snatches over a period of weeks, or maybe because they aren't that well drawn, given so many players doing the same basic job in this relatively short book.

The book could also entertain someone who just likes sports in general or who is interested in this region of the country (New Mexico to Louisiana), but no character or theme is fully developed. Not that the author intended to or must do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
For anyone who loves hockey, this is a GREAT book! Especially for minor league hockey fans. You feel like you are on the bus, in the locker room, etc. I can't say enough how much I love the book. Great job Jason!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puts you in the game
If you want to find out what "life in the minors" is really like, pick up this book. Sometimes the most entertaining events take place OFF the ice! Zamboni Rodeo is a good read for anyone who is a hockey fan, no matter what team you follow. Most of these guys aren't "household names" unless you follow the AA minors -- but by the time the book ends you'll feel like you know them and you'll be rooting for them like they were your team.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Day In The Life of Minor League Hockey
A year in the life of the Austin Ice Bats. Very gritty, realistic and fascinating. Any hockey fan will enjoy this book -it follows the games, the behind the scenes drama, the long and boring bus rides. Minor league hockey is a million miles away from the NHL, but after reading this book you might be inclined to think that these boys in this bush league might just have it right - they seem to have the time of their life, playing for low wages, and just for the sake of playing the game before they go on with the rest of their lives. Mr. Cohen brings it all to life, and obviously knows the game very well, and also had the trust of the entire Ice Bats organization. I would love to see a sequel, or another volume on minor league hockey.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good look at life in the lowest of the low minors
I picked up this book after reading Ken Baker's brilliant "They Don't Play Hockey in heaven". That book introduced me to the world of minor league hockey in nontraditional markets, like Texas and California. Cohen's book gives a good viewpoint into the lives and dashed dreams of minor league hockey players not good enough for "The Show", but not willing to hang up the skates just yet. I appreciate the game even more now, as both a fan and a player. If you like hockey and want a look into the lives of players you'll probably never see on NHL2Nite, pick this up. ... Read more
