4-0 out of 5 stars Great Box Lax book
It is a great book. The only thing though, it should of had some colour pictures and from what I can see the cover has a WLA (Western Lacrosse Association) goal net and there isn't that weird green flooring there is in the NLL on the cover.

Go Vancouver Ravens!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
As a fan of box (indoor) lacrosse, this book helped me to understand the rules of the game when I was still new to the sport. With the growing rate of intrest of box lax in the US and new teams poping up all over the country I think this will be a good thing for the players as well as the NLL(National Lacrosse League). Go Wings!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, if your american TOO!
The box game is growing in the US. we have teams on the west coast now. This should be called INDOOR LACROSSE for dummies.
Jim writes a good book. If you are new to box or indoor lacrosse, this is a great starter book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you're Canadian
Jim Hinkson's books are generally good. However, they are for box lacrosse - the indoor version of the game. Box lacrosse is not that popular in the US where field lacrosse is the dominant form of the game. If you're looking for something on field lacrosse look at Lacrosse: Fundamentals for Winning (Sports Illustrated Winner's Circle Books) or Lacrosse Technique and Tradition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars American Warrior.......(IF YOU CAN GET THIS BOOK ,GRAB IT)
This book {manual) was originally published in the mid to late '70s by O'hara. At that time I was stationed at Ft.Bragg, NC and had the honor of witnessing several demonstrations, as well as participating in several training courses. These were presented by Mike Echanis and Mike Sanders. The skills presented in this manual are the most effective that I believe have ever been presented to US military Specops community, before or since. The techniques are taken directly from Korean Hwa Rang Do; very close in nature to the Japanese ninjitsu. I can personally attest to the fact, that with sufficient training, the techniques in knife fighting, knife throwing, shuriken throwing and improvised projectiles, e.g. stones, is OVERWHELMING in it's effectiveness. This, by nature, is the most deadly fighting system from a military / CQB standpoint ever utilized. For my 21 years of military service, I constantly taught, utilized and perfected as many of the techniques as possible. This training that our group received was commissioned by the DoD for the the JFKSWC at Ft. Bragg and at other sites. This manual, as well as the other two (2) volumes written , in addition to our training course's dealt heavily with the mental aspects of self hypnosis and mind control; these are the corner stones of this system. For military Specops personnel, ALL 3 volumes should be studied and practised on a team/unit level on the training schedule. NOTE: Echanis and Sanders were KIA in 1979 while in Nicaragua as advisors, when their aircraft lost all structural integrity (a tango [terrorist] had planted an altimeter activated bomb on the plane). Echanis had been in the USSF in Viet Nam, being wounded in the calf. He was then seperated from the military, to return as a contract Instructor in CQB to all branches of service. He was, and still is, the only non-Korean to achieve the rank of Master in Kwa Ra Do, given by Joo Bang Lee, Grand Master. Mike Echanis was a true warrior. May he rest peacefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
This is a very interesting look at the science of knife combat as adapted for the military by a former special operations soldier and Hwarang Do expert. Very clear and concise. Most of the techniques deal with using the knife from the "reverse" or "icepick" grip.
Fortunately it's now back in print so people don't have to pay stupid prices for a copy anymore. It's only about $16.00 from Ohara publications as advertised in the latest issue of "Blackbelt" magazine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
IN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO
Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist."

Same binding as his defense book. Again, I have not read this one in over 20 years. Good fighting and throwing techniques.
This book belonged to Mario.

Please don't hesitate to check out my book that I published while in the U.S. Navy in 2003:
"Under the Rose: Poetry of Tragedy, Essence, and Romance"

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its type around
This is a superb book. I am reluctantly parting with a copy on ebay.co.uk now. This really is a unique work.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best! Only One Available!
This is STILL one of the BEST manuals available on serious blade work. I came here looking for an estimated value of the book in anticipation of selling it, but I have found NO COPIES AVAILABLE ANYWHERE!

Book Description

A comprehensive history of modern lacrosse, from the appropriation of the Native American game to its ever-increasing popularity today.

North America's Indian peoples have always viewed competitive sport as something more than a pastime. The northeastern Indians' ball-and-stick game that would become lacrosse served both symbolic and practical functions—preparing young men for war, providing an arena for tribes to strengthen alliances or settle disputes, and reinforcing religious beliefs and cultural cohesion.Today a multimillion-dollar industry, lacrosse is played by colleges and high schools, amateur clubs, and two professional leagues.

In Lacrosse: A History of the Game, Donald M. Fisher traces the evolution of the sport from the pre-colonial era to the founding in 2001 of a professional outdoor league—Major League Lacrosse—told through the stories of the people behind each step in lacrosse's development: Canadian dentist George Beers, the father of the modern game; Rosabelle Sinclair, who played a large role in the 1950s reinforcing the feminine qualities of the women's game; "Father Bill" Schmeisser, the Johns Hopkins University coach who worked tirelessly to popularize lacrosse in Baltimore; Syracuse coach Laurie Cox, who was to lacrosse what Yale's Walter Camp was to football; 1960s Indian star Gaylord Powless, who endured racist taunts both on and off the field; Oren Lyons and Wes Patterson, who founded the inter-reservation Iroquois Nationals in 1983; and Gary and Paul Gait, the Canadian twins who were All-Americans at Syracuse University and have dominated the sport for the past decade.

Throughout, Fisher focuses on lacrosse as contested ground.Competing cultural interests, he explains, have clashed since English settlers in mid-nineteenth-century Canada first appropriated and transformed the "primitive" Mohawk game oftewaarathon, eventually turning it into a respectable "gentleman's" sport.Drawing on extensive primary research, he shows how amateurs and professionals, elite collegians and working-class athletes, field- and box-lacrosse players, Canadians and Americans, men and women, and Indians and whites have assigned multiple and often conflicting meanings to North America's first—and fastest growing— team sport. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for novices
This book is an excellent tool for novices of the game. It gives chapters about the positions and techniques of the game and could be very helpul if you are learning lacrosse. It is also a resourceful tool as a coach (of kids under about 14) and gives pointers on all aspects of the game. If you have been playing lacrosse for a while you may want to look to another source for information about the game, although this book would be somewhat entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, but easy-to-understand guide to Lacrosse
I coach high school Lacrosse in Missouri, and have found this book a valuable tool in teaching Lacrosse to my players and their parents. I also loan this book out to other coaches and assistant coaches. The book is very comprehensive, but it is so easy to understand, that a total novice at Lacrosse is able to understand the game and even feel like an authority. It covers rules, history and strategy. In an area where Lacrosse is relatively new, this book is a god-send ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Girls' Lacrosse into the Modern Era
This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse. Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse. Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods. Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players. Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse. I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices. A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superlative book!
I can't say enough good things about this book! I picked it up while at a book sale and immediately had to have it. It's full of photographs of American Indian teams and tells you the full story of Lacrosse/baggataway and you get so much more--it's an in-depth look at how it affected the peoples and tidbits about their daily lives. Interspersed between each chapter are short 'stories' about lacrosse events.

This is a great book, and a wealth of information. It's about more than just lacrosse. Don't hesitate to get this!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine synthesis of native and sports history.
Vennum's work covers a neglected aspect of North American history: the role of lacrosse in native culture. By examining varieties of the game played across the continent, Vennum demonstrates that it was more than just a sport. Lacrosse provided entertainment, served as a substitute for armed conflict (and sometimes was a precursor to it), and was part of native spirituality. Particularly fascinating is Vennum's ability to weave the sporting aspects of the game with the sociological. Also important is his investigation of how the majority culture has taken this game and turned into something completely different: with standardized plastic sticks and a for-profit motive for playing. By taking the story all the way to the present, the author reveals that to native Americans the game still means much more, although many nations no longer even know they once enjoyed playing the "fastest game on two feet." My only complaint, as a Canadian, is that Vennum appears not to know geography quite well, and he consistently refers to Canadian sites incorrectly. But, overall, this a wonderful book ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning the fundamentals of box lacrosse
Lacrosse players, young and old, would find this book very useful to start playing the game or if players want to hone their skills. The book is very well detailed , from players basic stick skills, individual offense, individual defense, face-offs, to goaltending. Also, for you coaches out there, I highly recommend buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for box, indoor or canadian style lacrosse
Jim Hinkson's books (see also Lacrosse Team Strat.) are a valuble resource for the indoor lacrosse player coach or fan. While "Fundamentals" covers the individual skills each player will need to successfully play indoor lax, "Team Strat." covers understanding, developing, and coaching indoor lax plays - both offence and defense, man-up or short-handed. This 'team strategy' book may be for what the 'fan-only' is looking for a deeper understanding of the game. "Lacrosse Fundamentals" has a wonderful foreward by Chief Irving Powless, Jr. of the Onondaga Nation that describes, in the small space available, the vast importance the game of lacrosse holds for he and his people. Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for young box lacrosse players and coaches
I have coached teenage box lacrosse teams for 6 years now. I require my players to keep a team file folder into which they are to place and review things like drills, plays, strategy, etc. Several chapters from this book have also been photocopied by me and put in their files. The author has played and coached lacrosse for over 30 years and is recognized as one of the foremost box lacrosse authorities, along with Jim Bishop, his old mentor-coach, in Canada. He also has a second book out now on box lacrosse strategies, which you don't list. A must read for those wanting to know about "the fastest game on two feet"

4-0 out of 5 stars Tips for indoor (box) lacrosse players
A good book for beginning lacrosse players, written by one of the game's top instructors. This book concentrates on the indoor game, also known as box lacrosse or boxla, and focuses on techniques for individuals, rather than team strategy. Using pictures to illustrate his points, Hinkson is especially helpful for young players and adult beginners, (the chapter on indoor goaltending helped me to improve my game in an adult recreational league). Check out Hinkson's other lacrosse titles, including "the fastest game on two feet" which is difficult to find, but deals in depth with team strategy for the indoor game, and his new book, "winning lacrosse strategies," for tips on the field game. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars "Hockey Team strategies"
Although this book supplied a lot of information, it did not give the information i was looking for. For example...zone defenses are played with six players, and the game of lacrosse involves an "X" man...This book is more about hockey and basketball, and the diagrams used are that of a hockey rink! The proper terminology, atleast in Jersey and New York, is "Man-up" and not "Power-play!" The drills listed are very good, but I would not recommend this to a youth league coach who is starting a new program with little experience of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for coaches and players of box AND field lacrosse!
I can not begin to tell the sleepless nights I spent revamping and retooling our FIELD lacrosse team's offense with ideas from Hinkson's book. ALthough it is based on the box game, most of the principles apply directly (or can be modified) to the field game. Along with his fundmentals book, I highly recommend this book to any aspiring fan, coach, or player of the fastest game on 2 feet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indigenous Game of this land.
It is fortunate to finally hear about the origins of a world class game from the indigneous people who first introduced it to this country. Rarely are the origins of team sports made available to those who play them. In this case, it is revealed how the game of lacrosse is still connected to the cultural integrity of the Haudenosaunee, past, present and future. In turn, the reader also hears an Onondaga voice regarding their history--a voice usually not heard in a public school environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Juvenile - Great for Kids
Has significant information, but overall, is very child based. As a childen's book, I would give it five stars. If you're looking for any significant information on the game, don't buy this book. If you're looking for something entertaining for your children, I would highly recommend. Personally, I was looking for information for a college thesis, and this book did not really help. If you don't want to buy it new, wait a few days, until mine is offered as used. The people need to know. ... Read more
