5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful workout program
With help from this workout program I gained baserunning speed and an increase in bat head speed. This program is written very clearly and easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suprised

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book has been absolutely wonderful for me, as well as the rest of my team. I'm hitting the ball further then I ever have before. The difference was evident in weeks. Truly the single best program out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very informative book
I am very pleased with my copy of this book. It has everything I was looking for with photos, tips, and detailed programs. It goes into depth about the specific muscles used throughout the swing and used when throwing. Possibly the most important thing I got from this book is improved speed and power in rotating my torso which helps with both swinging and throwing harder. My hips are also more powerful and balance has improved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for beginning coaches
I have yet to coach a girls' softball team, but I am really interested in doing it. This book has some great advice on how to handle beginner players and their parents. The thing about this book that I found great was that it told you some characteristics to look for when selecting a pitcher, something that I would not have had a clue about doing. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner or experienced coach
This is an AMAZING book! Even if you have never coached, played, or even heard of softball, it helps you out. It breaks every aspect of the game down and puts it in simple terms so you can explain it to your team. It gives you practice advice and schedules as well as drills you can use for team members to improve, or establish, softball skills. It also gives you advice on how to become the best coach, dealing with gender issues and how to handle difficult parents. This book is a MUST for EVERY coach!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coaching Book for New Coaches
I am not a parent but nonetheless, this book is excellent! This book gets right down to the heart of coaching. It tells you step by step how to teach someone how to throw, catch, pitch, hit and play every position. It also tells you what type of girl would be good for positions of pitchers and catchers which is important since most girls at this age have no experience in many positions. The drills have diagrams and there is glossary in the back to help with the terminology. There are not that many good softball coaching books (believe me I've looked), so grab this one! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Box Lax book
It is a great book. The only thing though, it should of had some colour pictures and from what I can see the cover has a WLA (Western Lacrosse Association) goal net and there isn't that weird green flooring there is in the NLL on the cover.

    Go Vancouver Ravens!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
As a fan of box (indoor) lacrosse, this book helped me to understand the rules of the game when I was still new to the sport. With the growing rate of intrest of box lax in the US and new teams poping up all over the country I think this will be a good thing for the players as well as the NLL(National Lacrosse League). Go Wings!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, if your american TOO!
The box game is growing in the US. we have teams on the west coast now. This should be called INDOOR LACROSSE for dummies.
Jim writes a good book. If you are new to box or indoor lacrosse, this is a great starter book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you're Canadian
Jim Hinkson's books are generally good. However, they are for box lacrosse - the indoor version of the game. Box lacrosse is not that popular in the US where field lacrosse is the dominant form of the game. If you're looking for something on field lacrosse look at Lacrosse: Fundamentals for Winning (Sports Illustrated Winner's Circle Books) or Lacrosse Technique and Tradition. ... Read more

    Book Description

A comprehensive history of modern lacrosse, from the appropriation of the Native American game to its ever-increasing popularity today.

North America's Indian peoples have always viewed competitive sport as something more than a pastime. The northeastern Indians' ball-and-stick game that would become lacrosse served both symbolic and practical functions—preparing young men for war, providing an arena for tribes to strengthen alliances or settle disputes, and reinforcing religious beliefs and cultural cohesion.Today a multimillion-dollar industry, lacrosse is played by colleges and high schools, amateur clubs, and two professional leagues.

In Lacrosse: A History of the Game, Donald M. Fisher traces the evolution of the sport from the pre-colonial era to the founding in 2001 of a professional outdoor league—Major League Lacrosse—told through the stories of the people behind each step in lacrosse's development: Canadian dentist George Beers, the father of the modern game; Rosabelle Sinclair, who played a large role in the 1950s reinforcing the feminine qualities of the women's game; "Father Bill" Schmeisser, the Johns Hopkins University coach who worked tirelessly to popularize lacrosse in Baltimore; Syracuse coach Laurie Cox, who was to lacrosse what Yale's Walter Camp was to football; 1960s Indian star Gaylord Powless, who endured racist taunts both on and off the field; Oren Lyons and Wes Patterson, who founded the inter-reservation Iroquois Nationals in 1983; and Gary and Paul Gait, the Canadian twins who were All-Americans at Syracuse University and have dominated the sport for the past decade.

Throughout, Fisher focuses on lacrosse as contested ground.Competing cultural interests, he explains, have clashed since English settlers in mid-nineteenth-century Canada first appropriated and transformed the "primitive" Mohawk game oftewaarathon, eventually turning it into a respectable "gentleman's" sport.Drawing on extensive primary research, he shows how amateurs and professionals, elite collegians and working-class athletes, field- and box-lacrosse players, Canadians and Americans, men and women, and Indians and whites have assigned multiple and often conflicting meanings to North America's first—and fastest growing— team sport. ... "The Windmill Pitcher is the most comprehensive book on fastpitch pitching that I have read. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best pitching book for fastpitch softball...period!
This book is a "must have" for all fathers who want to be involved in helping their daughters to become successful pitchers in fastpitch softball. (I also think it would be an excellent resource for most softball coaches to have in their library.)

While I own 8-10 different video training tapes on pitching, Barry Sammons book is my most often used reference. It was originally recommended to me by one of the top pitching coaches in the Pacific Northwest.

The book does an excellent job of covering pitching mechanics and how to teach them. It also describes how to correct problems, and offers several excellent drills.

Other topics include: excellent descriptions and diagrams on throwing the various pitches; sections on strategy and the mental aspects of pitching; fitness training; and how to coach the pitcher.

If I could only have one book or video to use in working with my daughter, this book would be it. Even though my daughter also has a pitching coach, Barry Sammons book has allowed me to be more helpful as an "assistant pitching coach".

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of fastpitch - First Edition
This book covers just about everything you'll need to know about fastpitch softball pitching, including mechanics, control, speed, power, physical conditioning, getting batters out, and real-time game considerations. The section on mechanics, from explaining the two types of movements (leap and drag and stepping style), to breaking down the pitching motion into its parts will prove to be, I believe, Biblical in importance for the sport of fastpitch softball. Included are appendices that provide excellent drills for each stage of the pitching motion, and excercises for power and conditioning. The diagrams were very helpful, and there are plenty of them. No photos.
Criticisms: Very wordy, and makes many cross references, especially when you are on, say, page 45 and are sent to Figure 1-18, which is on some previous, unreferenced page. You have to flip back through the book to find it.
Noteworthy: Actually treats men as qualified to pitch fastpitch, and doesn't assume this is a women's game.
Prognosis: I hope Sammons will take into account the criticisms, and produce an even better Second Edition, perhaps with photos, higher quality figures, tighter cross-referencing (just reproduce the relevant figure at the appropriate place) and more quotes from softballers.
Bottom Line: If you want to pitch fastpitch softball, and you will work at it, get this book. I did, I worked with it, and now pitch MUCH better. Had I not gotten this book, I would not be the pitcher I am today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best material I've used
I have a collection of tapes from various people. It would seem that video would be the best medium for this kind of instruction. Maybe it's because I viewed and re-viewed the tapes so often, but I honestly got more detail out of this book than anything else I've used. The discussion of each piece of the mechanics along with drills I haven't seen on any tape was very, very helpful.

I would strongly recommend this book. It's straight-up, no hype instruction. Excellent for beginning or intermediate pitchers and/or coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative
I keep this book with me all the time during softball season ! I have been coaching for 9 years and and have learned quite a few things from this book. It's nice to be able to go back to it and review. It covers the windmill pitcher from A to Z. Very Very Good !

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of windmill pitching
Mr. Sammons uses his practical knowledge of pitching to educate the coach and player about the mechanics of pitching and most importantly the mental aspects of pitching in an easy to read format. He personally illustrated the book to show the proper grips and forms to assist the reader. I rate it a classic. By the way, at the age of "50 something" Mr. Sammons pitched a perfect game in the competitive Milwaukee WI mens fastpitch league. So much for them that can't play.........teach........he does both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars American Warrior.......(IF YOU CAN GET THIS BOOK ,GRAB IT)
This book {manual) was originally published in the mid to late '70s by O'hara. At that time I was stationed at Ft.Bragg, NC and had the honor of witnessing several demonstrations, as well as participating in several training courses. These were presented by Mike Echanis and Mike Sanders. The skills presented in this manual are the most effective that I believe have ever been presented to US military Specops community, before or since. The techniques are taken directly from Korean Hwa Rang Do; very close in nature to the Japanese ninjitsu. I can personally attest to the fact, that with sufficient training, the techniques in knife fighting, knife throwing, shuriken throwing and improvised projectiles, e.g. stones, is OVERWHELMING in it's effectiveness. This, by nature, is the most deadly fighting system from a military / CQB standpoint ever utilized. For my 21 years of military service, I constantly taught, utilized and perfected as many of the techniques as possible. This training that our group received was commissioned by the DoD for the the JFKSWC at Ft. Bragg and at other sites. This manual, as well as the other two (2) volumes written , in addition to our training course's dealt heavily with the mental aspects of self hypnosis and mind control; these are the corner stones of this system. For military Specops personnel, ALL 3 volumes should be studied and practised on a team/unit level on the training schedule. NOTE: Echanis and Sanders were KIA in 1979 while in Nicaragua as advisors, when their aircraft lost all structural integrity (a tango [terrorist] had planted an altimeter activated bomb on the plane). Echanis had been in the USSF in Viet Nam, being wounded in the calf. He was then seperated from the military, to return as a contract Instructor in CQB to all branches of service. He was, and still is, the only non-Korean to achieve the rank of Master in Kwa Ra Do, given by Joo Bang Lee, Grand Master. Mike Echanis was a true warrior. May he rest peacefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
This is a very interesting look at the science of knife combat as adapted for the military by a former special operations soldier and Hwarang Do expert. Very clear and concise. Most of the techniques deal with using the knife from the "reverse" or "icepick" grip.
Fortunately it's now back in print so people don't have to pay stupid prices for a copy anymore. It's only about $16.00 from Ohara publications as advertised in the latest issue of "Blackbelt" magazine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
    IN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO
Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist."

Same binding as his defense book. Again, I have not read this one in over 20 years. Good fighting and throwing techniques.
    This book belonged to Mario.

Please don't hesitate to check out my book that I published while in the U.S. Navy in 2003:
"Under the Rose: Poetry of Tragedy, Essence, and Romance"

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its type around
This is a superb book. I am reluctantly parting with a copy on ebay.co.uk now. This really is a unique work.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best! Only One Available!
This is STILL one of the BEST manuals available on serious blade work. I came here looking for an estimated value of the book in anticipation of selling it, but I have found NO COPIES AVAILABLE ANYWHERE!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
Very good book on general weight lifting. It's like a good manual for a college weight lifting class. The routines really are a more general/basic rugby workout w/o the split between tight 5, forwards, etc. Since you're in different positions, you'll need a very different workout.
Still, it's a good book when it comes to understanding form and switching one exercise for another. For the best rugby routine, ask your teams trainer and supplement it with this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugby
I never really thought I would write a review, but I thought this was the least I could do. This book definately helped me form a plan of action, something that I lack often. And after a very short time I started to notice improvements in my preformance. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Very well written book and it has great workout routines. I gave it to my son, and soon after I was following the weight programs in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars just what i was looking for
i was looking for a book that would tell me exactly what to do, how to do it, and when to do it and this book has all of that. my key areas of concern were strength and power and the programs in this book were broken down into those categories exactly. its perfect for any rugby player. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Drills, drills, and more drills
Coach Martin is a hoot. I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers. She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball. She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever.

The problem is that it is really difficult to translate all that she embodies into a book. Don't get me wrong, the drills are awesome and they are presented nicely, but that is what you would expect from a drill book. But, the sense of fun, the way she conveys the knowledge, that is kind of lost in the translation. The main thing I like about this is that the skill level progresses with each drill. So if you are dying for some new drills, here is a bunch, but make sure that they suit your needs. Another good point is that these drills are easily adaptable, so it is easy for coaches to change them to fit their own needs.

I just wish they could package Coach Martin's dynamic personality and enthousiasm into a book. Oh well....

4-0 out of 5 stars You can never have enough drills!
Peggy Martin's book has been a valuable addition to my arsenal of drills, because I believe a coach can never have access to too many drills. It's important for players to get a feel for a skill by attacking it in a number of different ways, and using several drills in sequence allows players to continue working on the skill without getting bored, which is important to the learning process.

Adding Peggy Martin's "101 Volleyball Drills" to my library has helped keep my high school players on task without putting their minds to sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book helped me out a lot. I play goalie and defense and this book has very helpful sections on both postitions. My firends and I brought this to our team practice and our coach read it and said that he will use all of the drills given to help us out. This is a very good buy and i reccomend it to every beginning and advanced player out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for novices
This book is an excellent tool for novices of the game. It gives chapters about the positions and techniques of the game and could be very helpul if you are learning lacrosse. It is also a resourceful tool as a coach (of kids under about 14) and gives pointers on all aspects of the game. If you have been playing lacrosse for a while you may want to look to another source for information about the game, although this book would be somewhat entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, but easy-to-understand guide to Lacrosse
I coach high school Lacrosse in Missouri, and have found this book a valuable tool in teaching Lacrosse to my players and their parents. I also loan this book out to other coaches and assistant coaches. The book is very comprehensive, but it is so easy to understand, that a total novice at Lacrosse is able to understand the game and even feel like an authority. It covers rules, history and strategy. In an area where Lacrosse is relatively new, this book is a god-send ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Softball Pitchers
Before adhering to the techniques offered in this book, my sister was a sufficient recreation softball pitcher who utilized the "slingshot" delivery. After switching to the windmill delivery, diligently practicing the methods taught in this book, and adopting Coach Ford's philosophy, she was able to secure a full-ride scholarship to the University of Nebraska as a starting pitcher. This book provides straight-forward descriptions of the tools and techniques necessary to become a successful competitive softball pitcher, and I would recommend it to any pitcher, parent or coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing the basics will teach you how, why and when.
Along with hard practice, the guidance of this book helped my daughter and myself understand the basics of the pitches she now throws. Why should you throw a pitch, what the pitch should do and how the ball spins should be known before it's thrown. Mr. Ford's book tells of every aspect of the basic pitches to be a competitive pitcher and pitching coach. Very easy to comprehend and to the point gives a no nonsense approach to the basics. The small paper back is easy to carry and a quick reference when on the practice field. This is great for the coach who can not remember every aspect all the time (Dennis did that for us). I have owned three books and will buy another, because everone that borrows it from me likes it and still uses it till this day. Thank you Dennis for making my daughter a 1996 Pony National Champion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced Pamplet, How to throw five pitches on (50) pages?
I have been playing, coaching girls softball for over 25 years. I purchased this book with the intent to help girls pitch softball, hoping to get ideas on drills, practice etc. I guess, I was expecting more when I received less. In my opinion, it could of took less time to write than to read, (within the hour). If you're wealthy and wanting to spend a lot of money on terms, than this pamplet may be for you, If your looking for specifics and details, and a good buy. Search elsewhere.....

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if you want to be the best in the circle.
My daughter, Lindsey Kontra, has been exclusively using Dennis Ford's pitching technique for 6 years. At age 16, she has come in first in ASA national championships 3 times, and finished in second and fourth as well. Her dedication to this style of pitching has brought her great success and a promising future. His book easily details the techniques needed to throw 5 pitches and a wealth of information on practices, expectations, and correcting problems. I consider this book required reading for any girl wanting to be the best in the circle.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will do little to advance beginners
This is an over priced pamplet that will do little to "teach" someone to begin to pitch. I have been involved in ASA softball for 8 years and, my daughter has been pitching for 2 years now. I bought this book to try to teach her different pitches. The book lacks a glossery to define some of her terms. In addition sequential drawings or photos would be very helpful to show what is trying to be explained. The book frequently references you to other chapters to try to explain what the current chapter is trying to explain. (example when attempting to understand what is being explained in "The Change Up" the sub heading "Feet" says "you should have the same feet positions as in other pitches" Say what????, which other pitches, why not type another two or three lines to explain it in this chapter. This happens repeatedly throughout this book (Pamplet)Save your money and invest in a trainer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Girls' Lacrosse into the Modern Era
This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse. Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse. Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods. Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players. Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse. I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices. A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide for a New Coach
Thank You. I'm a father of two daughters (5 and 7) who has never coached before. Although I've played on a softball team at work, and am somewhat familiar with the game, I never actually played little league when I was a kid. With so few coaches however, one of my neighbors asked me to help her coach.

I was a little nervous about giving these girls any bad information. At this level you should just be reviewing the basics, but since I was never actually formally taught what the basics are, I didn't want to miss anything. I also didn't want to teach them something that might have the potential of hurting them by accident. After reading this book however I feel much better. It covered a lot of the things I might have overlooked, and gave me the confidence I'll need to get in front of these kids and parents and not embarrass myself.

The book was straightforward and easy to read (I got through it in about two days which was good for me.) I'd highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide For Coaching Youth Softball
Kathy Strahan's book is one of the most recent, well-constructed guides for coaching softball to young girls. The book provides a detailed compilation of drills, skills, strategies, and other information designed to assist the coach through the process of developing the players' social, psychological, emotional, and physical abilities. It is categorized in a systematic progression which explores the characteristics of an effective leader, responsibilities of a youth coach, important issues within the sport, and how to plan and teach the basic fundamentals of the game. Some of the topics addressed within these categories include information regarding safety, liability, decision making, communication, teaching methods, motivation, dealing with parents, sportsmanship, and much more! Major points of information are synthesized into creative and insightful coaching tips, which can be easily referenced throughout the text. The author also provides sample practice plans, line-up sheets, game strategies, evaluation worksheets, and goal setting plans. Ultimately, this book will guide you toward becoming the coach that every community, league, school, and parent wants for their children!

    Book Description

Cricket Explained offers the sports enthusiast a user-friendly introduction to baseball's British cousin, a game that shares with America's national pastime the common ancestor "rounders".

This is the definitive beginner's guide to the game of cricket, written by a world authority on the sport, the co-inventor of the Coopers & Lybrand World Cricket Ratings System. Cricket Explained takes the reader from the game's fundamentals -- basic rules, terminology, equipment -- to the finer points of strategy, individual playing styles, and cricket lore.

The book includes a combined glossary/index for easy reference and is illustrated throughout with the lighthearted drawings of British cartoonist Mark Stevens. So even if you don't know "short leg" from "silly mid off" or a bowler from a batsman, you'll come away from Cricket Explained with an understanding for this truly international sport which, like baseball, is loved both for its elegant simplicity and its vexing complexity.

Among the topics covered in Cricket Explained's concise, user-friendly entries are:
    -- Cricket's history
-- Making sense of the action on the field
-- Batsmen and the batting order
    -- Fielders and fielding positions
    -- Fielding and batting tactics
    -- Scoring and statistics
    -- Bowling strategy
-- How many players are required
-- How runs are scored, outs are made, and a game is won

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide for the recently initiated
I had the pleasure of catching two of the five days of an England test match against South Africa at the Oval during a recent holiday in London. As an American and an avid baseball fan, all I had ever heard of cricket was "boring", "incomprehensible" and, yet again, "boring". I found my two days at the Oval fascinating and was fortunate enough to not only have the patience to pay attention to the game during those two days, but also to stumble upon this great book at a bookstore on Fulham. I was even more fortunate to find the book between the two days I attended, read it from cover to cover, and have become a bit of a pest now to my American nonbelieving friends. Cricket is a great sport and if you want the quick and dirty, well here it is. From Googly to Howzhat, it's all here. Now I know enough to pester my Indian neighbors during the next test match. I wish I had this book last year during the World Cup. Great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and amusing at the same time
This book is best suited to somebody who has witnessed some cricket without having a clue what was going on. The book is filled with answers to questions typical of the ones a novice might ask (why do they all wear white? don't they all get bored? who's WINNING???). Fun cartoons throughout. I understand that the UK edition of this book is called 'what is a googly?'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your pennies
Cricket the grand old English game, the gentlemens game. More research should have explained the games heritage and how it was introduced to the countries that were under English rule, thus giving a greater understanding of how the game came to dominate in the former English colonies. I think that this emphasis would have made for not only a deeper understanding of why Cricket has failed to establish itself as a serious sport in many countries that were not part of the English commowealth but also why the game is steaped in English tradition.
