5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this one
This is a great book. It's has tons of valuable information. Not for the guy who loves pictures. Your coaches and captains should have this book. It will make you a better coach, and improve the quality of your club's play. If you want to keep losing, but have the best parties, get some other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there
Great, great book. Both for the new rugby player and the old hand. Only criticism I have is that more illustrations and diagrams would be helpful for the total newbie. However, since that wasn't the intended audience it only becomes a problem because there's nothing else comparable out there. Like the Bible, everytime you read it, you learn something new every time. Or something that you weren't ready to understand before becomes suddenly clear. A must-have for the rugby obsessed.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Rugby primer
"Total Rugby" is essential reading for players and coaches - and useful for fans. The book covers the essentials of play, from novice to advanced. "Total Rugby" plus a rulebook will take you a long way in the sport. It's not just for 'students of the game'! Leave behind the 'it's just smear the queer' and 'if I hit 'em hard enough we'll win' attitudes and learn something about your sport. You'll never win against skilled teams until you ingrain the information encompassed by "Total Rugby". If you're ready for advance tactics and strategy, check out "Think Rugby" by the same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I've been playing rugby for almost 6 years, and I wish I read this book earlier. While I think this book is a lot more useful for coaches than for players, it is still a great reference- for example, diagrams outlining the best way to drive in a scrum, explanations of drift defense- all important stuff, and he also goes into detail about what each position should do- which is great for beginners, who are often out there not understanding their roles. Being a passionate rugger, I finished this book in one day!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book for all ruggers
Mr. Greenwood has all the basics in here, and it serves as a useful reference beginners wanting to get the basics of the game down, to more experienced ruggers who want to read up on strategy and training tactics. ... Read more

Book Description

Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America's most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distill the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game.

Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included.

This is a book that will find a place on every coach and player's shelf.

Book Description

This book presents a detailed, full, and well-documented history of cricket playing in America, focusing on its period of growth in the 1840s and its periodic revivals and the social and cultural factors and circumstances of these revivals of interest. Its argument essentially is that cricket failed to take on, or resisted an American identity but that the sport had considerable appeal and recognized virtues both as a bat-and-ball sport and a "gentlemanly" sport that fostered sportsmanship, control, public manners, and decorum. Cricket found acceptance mainly in the upper leisure class but also appealed to working-class people. Melville argues that cricket resisted changes in the rules or style of play that would have made it a faster-moving sport of alternating cation (offense and defense) and that it remained a club sport that resisted professionalism and organization for profit. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Slow Pitch
Sports histories fall into two categories: fans' histories - replete with memorable games, famous players, rules changes, league standings, and team and individual records - and academics' histories, which brush aside those matters in favor of sociology, cultural analysis and politics. While Tom Melville is a cricket fan (author of a proselytizing primer, "Cricket for Americans"), he writes here as an academic, with chapter titles like, "The Retreat from Cosmopolitanism and the Fallacy of the Chadwick Thesis". The upshot is a thoroughly researched volume that concentrates almost exclusively on what Americans thought about cricket and why they did (or more often did not) take it up.

The main subject of "The Tented Field" is cricket's unsuccessful rivalry with baseball. The older sport had solid foundations in pre-Civil War America but progressively gave way to its younger cousin. Mr. Melville traces the peaks and valleys of cricket's popularity from the 1830's, when organized play first appeared, through the first decade of the 20th century, when a final upswing failed to take hold. He has much to say about who played cricket, and when and where and why. How they played and what they did scarcely enters the picture. Save for an occasional brief anecdote and several reproductions of photographs and engravings, cricket itself is all but invisible throughout the work. As a small instance, Mr. Melville has unearthed the box score (to use the baseball term) of a famous 1845 match, legendarily the first in which native Americans held their own against immigrants from England. He uses this evidence to probe the ethnic makeup of the sides but neither reprints it nor tells us what happened on the field.

The author cannot, of course, be blamed for having chosen not to write fans' history, but anyone who picks this volume up under the delusion that he will find accounts of the exploits of American cricketers should be forewarned. The academic delver into sports history will find better rewards. The research is prodigious. One quakes at the thought of how many yellowing newspapers and forgotten magazines Mr. Melville had to turn over to compile his 57 page list of American cricket clubs. On the other hand, the conclusions drawn from this mass of material are a bit confused. The summary statements in the final chapter are difficult to relate to what has gone before, and the ultimate verdict, "Cricket failed in America because it never established an American character", sounds less like an answer than a restatement of the question.

"The Tented Field" contains abundant raw materials for a history of cricket in the United States, but that history, from the point of view of either fan or academic, has yet to be written.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This is a superb book, one of the best, if not the best, historical treatments of cricket ever written. Anyone trying to promote cricket in America had better read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A ground breaking history book.
This is an excellent book. Not a rah-rah, scores and biography history, but an attempt to explain why cricket failed as an American sport. Readers will be amazed to learn how extensively cricket once was played in the United States (the author includes a state by state, city by city listing of 19th century American cricket clubs from around the country). This book isn't light reading, but worthwhile for anyone who wants to know how America's sporting culture developed

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to cricket currently available.
This is the best book available explaining criket to readers unfamiliar with the game. The work not only explains the basic rules of the game, but also provides chapters on basic game strategy, terminology and world organization. It even has a chapter on how to teach cricket to Americans. Best of all, the author does this by drawing comparisons to baseball throughout the work. Can't see how anyone could do a better job covering this topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Coaches Dream!
Without a doubt, Go Girl is the best motivational book for young women athletes that I've ever read. It takes the reader on a practical, methodical and inspirational journey of self discovery that culminates, in the case of author, Natalie Cook, with an olympic gold medal. From Chapter 1, 'It all starts with a dream' to the end, 'Golden Dawn', Cook writes about her 4-year 'journey to gold' in a way that's not just interesting, but causes the reader to almost subconsciously become the character in the story. You can't help but apply Cook's experiences and observations of self discovery to your own life. As a high school girls volleyball coach I am always looking for ways to inspire and motivate my players and I knew they had to read this book. We made it mandatory summer reading and told them that there would be a test when school started in the fall. In the weeks follwing the test, one player had to stand before the team each day before practice and give a chapter review that included how the content of the chapter might be applied to our team as a whole or to the player as an individual. Everything about Go Girl, from the subject material to the lay-out and design of the book, is done in a way that teenagers can relate to. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
This is the first book I have found that captures the essence of mental toughness in sport. It presents the complex nature of how to control your thoughts, so having complete control over what you do. Having a female role model for my junior girls was a real bonus. It has helped me as a coach and those players that have read it are reaping the rewards. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh no, not another drill book! Well, kind of...
One problem with being a beginning coach is the constant and nagging suspicion that there is one absolute and definitive drill that will magically solve all of your problems for you. Well, no. It takes a systematic design of the practice and a good understanding to coach the sport. But what is a beginning coach to do?

This book is a good source for drills, but Coach Wise presents the drills in a format that encourages people to think about the skill first and then go into the drills. This is a drill book but it is a little more than that. Each chapter breaks down the essntials of the theme of the chapter and THEN goes into the drills. For those desperate for more drills, that does not prove to be enough of a side track to force them to think about what they are teaching, but for those who do stop and reflect on the technique and skills required to perform the drills, it is a nice touch that proves to be very beneficial. Because of the scattered nature of the book, a name college coach wrote each of the chapters, this is a compendium of knowledge which is quite uneven in terms of writing. But is serves its purpose well.

I would recommend Arie Selinger's book and Mike Hebert's book for more advanced coaches and Bill Neville's book for beginning coaches who actually wants to coach and not just throw the kids into a maze of drills.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD PLACE TO START.
This book has a lot of good basic drill for the technical game of volleyball. I must say, for the coach that does not have a lot of drill tucked away in his/her head, this book is a definite asset. It has a lot of good solid drills that would help any coach. I would have like to have seen some more technical drill, but on the other hand, if your team can handle all of the drills provided, your doing alright.. Well worth the money.. Thanks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool For Young Players
As a volunteer softball coach, I was impressed by this book and I found it to be a helpful and concise guide to the rules of softball for young players. Unlike other such books which are written for a high school or college level, this book is written for elementary school children (e.g., K to 2nd grade) who are beginning to learn the game. The softball rules are explained clearly and simply. This is helpful because softball rules can seem pretty hypertechnical to young children. Topics include equipment, positions, pitching, batting and strike zone, fair/foul territory, running, umpire signals, types of outs, vocabulary, etc. The illustrations also help explain proper stances and positions. Don't expect a tome, however -- the book is only 32 pages long. And this book won't provide much help for those who've played softball for more than several years. I think that this book is perfect for its purpose. ... Read more
