5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant
I was unsure of what to expect from this book. Most sports autobiographies are ghost written, but this book has no ghost writing credit and was actually Neil Back's own work.

The only other books of this nature I had to compare to "Size Doesn't Matter" is Mick Foley's pro wrestling autobiography "Have a Nice Day" and it's followup "Foley is Good." (Neither of these were ghost written either.. a fact he spends about 2 chapters discussing in his second book.) Other than that, I've never read a sports autobiography of any kind.

Now, Rugby and Pro Wrestling are sports that are miles apart. Some argue Pro Wrestling isn't a sport, but I won't even get into that here. Foley's two books are genius, no doubt. Neil Back is at that level as well.

The book starts out at his birth, as is most logical. For the first 2 or 3 chapters, he jumps between time periods quite quickly, and that is a bit disconcerting. He's talkign about when he was 5 and participating in his first Rugby match and then is suddenly talking about a British Lions tour, and is then back to when he was 5. This settles down quickly, though, and the temporal flow becomes much better.

You need to know a bit about Rugby to truly appreciate this book, as he doesn't explain many terms at all, and doesn't really explain the importance of positions. But it doesn't matter that much.. it makes it a little bit less confusing if you know the difference between a Flanker, Winger and Hooker, though.

He progresses through his life to right up after the disappointing British Lions tour of Australia in 2001. Well written the whole way. The only gripe I have is that Neil uses too much British jargon. He gives everyone nicknames.. Jonno, Lol, Robbo, Hilly, Catty, Backy (referring to himself), Deanno and so on. Honestly, by the end of the book, I had forgotten who "Deanno" was and had to go back thru the earlier parts of the book in an attempt to find out. He also makes references to british celebrities, which totally goes over my head... but I can't really dock him for that, as this book was more intended for a British audience, I think.

Overall, if you're a Rugby fan.. even if you don't like English Rugby.. this book is definately one to get. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Americans to get started in Cricket
G'day , I found Coaching Youth Cricket by Australian Cricket Board very useful in launching an inschool program in Kansas and across the USA teaching PE Teachers about the game of cricket and also educate parents new to the game , what it was all about. I highly reccomend it. to find out more about jr cricket in the usa i also recomend checking out HotShotCricket.com and USJuniorcricket.org
if you are interested in learning about Cricket this book will help.
Edward.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for cricket coaches!
I coach youth cricket in Colorado (USA) with programs in both the community and at the elementary school level. I have found this book a wonderful resource for interesting drills. I have also expanded and modified their drills for American children to create additional drills for my program.

I believe this book is a MUST for anyone serious about mainstreaming cricket in the US, and more specifically teaching children (who live anywhere!) cricket.

The ACB has approved this; remember they have created the worlds best cricket side, arguably, best ever. Why not learn from the best, using their tools and resources? This is one affordable vehicle one should consider for your children and adult cricket program!

For more information on our implementation, visit us at ColoradoJuniorCricket.Org.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for a Novice American!
I am currently researching sports not regularly played in the USA and how they are played by both children and adults. Cricket is the first on my list. Considering the fact that my "world of sports" has only included baseball, basketball, American football, and hockey, I find this book quite helpful. It speaks in terms the total novice can understand and it seems to adequately describe children's involvement in the game.

1-0 out of 5 stars Contains useless information and boring
I have read this book and I found the information contained within it to be so useless that it was actually quite boring to read with nothing new or informative to learn. I believe I would have better spent my money on other cricket coaching books which are much cheaper and in my view contain quality information regarding the coaching of cricket for all ages, youths included. I guess I forgot the golden rule "never judge a book by its cover". ... Read more

Book Description

In the twelve years that he has been in the public eye, Sachin Tendulkar has been explosive on the cricket field and just as reticent off it. He was barely fifteen years old when he first wrote his name into the record books with a stupendous 664-run partnership with his childhood friend Vinod Kambli. Two year later, he struck his first century in first-class cricket. At eighteen, he became the second youngest man to make a hundred in international cricket, and after that there was no looking back. Records tumbled by the wayside as he captivated audiences first in his home city of Mumbai, then in the rest of India and all over the cricket-playing world. Today, Sachin is widely accepted as the world's finest batsman, with impeccable technique, an incredible array of strokes, and maturity far beyond his years. His teammates and friends swear by him, his fans worship him and there are few, if any, critics of his game or his temperament.

In this biography of the hero of Indian cricket, sports writer Gulu Ezekiel mines interviews, press reports and conversations over the last decade to create an accurate and sympathetic account of the man and his first passion: cricket. He tracks Sachin from his childhood when he first caught the bug of cricket, through his early performances in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments, and follows him on his meteoric rise to international stardom. With unfailing attention to detail, he reconstructs the crucial matches and events that marked Sachin's career and unravels for us the magic of the charismatic cricketer whom Wisden once dubbed 'bigger than Jesus'.

Sachin: The Story of the World's Greatest Batsman, the first, serious exhaustive biography of the Tendulkar career so far, brings back, like a warm autumn breeze does, the memory of the wunderkind's early exhilarating summers in international cricket...The book is akin to a documentary in prose...the book's big virtue is that it is laboriously researched and cross-referenced. For any quizzer on Mastermind India opting for "The Life and Times of Sachin Tendulkar" as their specialist subject there's good news. You just got yourself the ready reckoner that covers 1973-2002.

4-0 out of 5 stars Number one: The World's Best Batsmen and Bowlers
Sure to be used as a reference for the perennial arguments of " who was the best ", Cricket correspondent with the Sunday Times, Simon Wilde seeks to identify the 50 Best cricketers over the history of the game, starting in the 18th century and moving to the present day. Wilde uses as a reference point the overall records of the individuals, coupled with their specific records against the top players of their time, and the assistance of the PriceWaterhouse Coopers rating system. Each of the preferred players merits an individual resume of their career by the author and these range in length from 1 page for Edward " Lumpy ' Stevens to over 6 pages for Sir Donald Bradman and Sir Garfield Sobers. This book is very interesting reading in providing a thumbnail sketch of the careers, techniques and records of the great players in the games history, however readers are unlikely to be experts on the subjects after this reading. Its real value is the sighting overview of these top players and how they have contributed to the game's best performances. ... Read more
