5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of drills for players at all levels.
I've used Sue Gozanky's book as part of the drill library for our high school program for over 5 years, and I heartily recommend it to all coaches, at any level of play.

There are drills covering every skill, for individuals and for teams, with lots of diagrams to help players improve whatever phase of the game they need to work on.

Sue's book is easy to understand and implement, and it's been one of my most-thumbed books ever since I first acquired it. I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars The ideal book for beginning and veteran coaches
I am in my 3rd year of coaching at the Jr. High level and use this book for planning my drills and strategies for the year. Some of the terms varied from those I had heard, but the explanations and illustrations make understanding the game excellent. ... Read more

Book Description

As France's oldest team sport, rugby football has throughout its 125-year history reflected major changes in French society. This book analyzes for the first time the complex variety of motives that have led the French to adopt and remake this rather unlikely British sport in their own image.A major site for the construction of masculine, class-based regional and national identities, France's tradition of 'Champagne rugby' continues to be as subject to dramatic upheavals as the society that produced it. The game's precocious professionalism and endemic violence have not infrequently caused the French to be cast as international pariahs. Such isolation, exacerbated by internal politics, has led the French not only to encourage the extension of the sport beyond its British imperial base (into Italy and Romania, for instance), but also to engage in some uncomfortable tactical alliances, most obviously with apartheid South Africa.

Taking his analysis both on and off the field, the author tackles these issues and much more: the relationship of sport and the state (including particularly the Vichy period and the period under de Gaulle); professionalization; the persistence of colonial and postcolonial structures (including the role of ethnic minorities); and gender issues - especially masculine identities. At the same time he links the evolution of the sport to the broader context of French socio-economic, political and cultural history.

This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the cultural analysis of sport or French popular culture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychology of Coaching
This book is a great book to discuss the pshycological aspect of coaching. The book discussed what it means to be a coach and how to deal with parents. It did have a few drills at the end of the book that were somewhat helpful but overall this book didn't have a lot of useful information for myself. If you want a great book for coaching, buy "The baffled Parents Guide To Coaching Youth Softball".

2-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Youth Softball
A more appropriate title would have been "The Psychological Aspects of Coaching Youth Softball". This book's strength is in that area. However, I was very disapointed in it's minimal discussion of specific drills (batting, defense, base running etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Play ball!
As a first time league softball coach, I was looking for some pointers on teaching basic skills, drills, and organizing practices. Boy, does this book deliver. In simple prose, and with helpful diagrams, this book lays out a thoughtful approach to teaching every aspect of the game, and making it fun. I am beginning my first season with more confidence having read this book. Play ball! ... Read more

Book Description

MadCat Campione is the best twelve-year-old
catcher in New Hampshire..

And this year her fastpitch softball team, the Norwich Sting, is going National. They'll be shooting to make the National Fastpitch Softball World Series, playing against the best teams from around the country. MadCat is thrilled.

But going National isn't quite what MadCat expected. Almost half the girls from the Sting -- girls who have played together for years -- have been cut to make room for hotshots from nearby towns. Their coach tells them the most important thing is to play to win. MadCat's best friend, Jess, isn't fun anymore: all she can think about is beating the competition, both inside and outside the team. Things are getting tenser and tenser.

The Sting's winning all their games; they're sure to make it to the big time. They know nothing can stop them, not when their motto is Eating Dirt Is Better Than Losing. But is winning really more important than anything? Or will all their victories just add up to nothing?

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, did this book jazz our 10 year old softball player!
I purchased this book based on Amazon's recommended readings and readers' book reviews. I didn't expect it to be such a hit, but our 10 year old daughter couldn't stop reading it, talking about it, and reading parts to me. Like Molly, she's lived in the shadow of her siblings attletic prowess, and is only now coming into her own. There are far too few engaging books about girls and athletics out there, but this one is certainly at the top of the list. At my daughter's urging, I read it, and (like her) couldn't put it down. This book deals with all the issues in kids sports -- overpowering parental interest, the effects of a star athlete on the rest of the family, the emotions of competition, and--most importantly--how kids just want to play sports for fun and have fun playing. Highly recommended by two generations in out family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story with a message about true victory
My two daughters, age 10 and 11, and I read this book together during our own softball season. We couldn't wait for the next chapter to tell us what happened to Allie and Molly and their respective softball teams. The message about what it takes to be the best-at softball, at being a sister, at being a friend, at being Dad and coach-were excellent. We highly recommend this book and have given it to friends. A must-read for young female athletes!!!Lori ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars India 1, British Raj 0
When the Bollywood legend Aamir Khan decided to make a film about a cricket match in India during the British Raj, a match in which the down-trodden Indians vanquish the English imperialists, he went to London to recruit British actors who could (at least in theory) play the game. Hence Chris England and colleagues are taken to the remote town ofBhuj in Gujerat, uncomfortably close to the border with Pakistan.

This book is an account of the shooting of the film ("Lagaan"), the trials and tribulations of being a bit-part actor and of surviving the ravages of provincial India (everything from the difficulty of getting news from home to being followed by crowds on a beach when trying to find a private place to find relief from diarrhoea). There is real poignancy at the end of the book, as Gujerat was hit by a massive earthquake shortly after filming ceased - essentially Chris England's description of the Bhuj is of a town that was destroyed.

Inevitably with such a book, you get more out of it if you have some knowledge of cricket, but "Lagaan" was such a world-wide hit (my Indian friends virtually demanded that I watch it) that this book might appeal despite that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have rule book.
I hadn't played the game of croquet since I was a child. When I purchased a set, I decided that the small pamphlet that came with the set, did not answer all my questions on the sport. I wanted one book with good court set-up diagrams, rules for various games one can play in croquet,a glossary of terms, and perhaps some tips on techniques. I found all of this and more in Mr. Boga's book. In typical instruction books, I usually skip the "history of" chapter and get right to the "meat" of the book. I read, and finished, this chapter before realizing it. It offered some interesting tidbits that I now regal my family with in-between wacks of my mallet. This is a wonderful book for a returning croquet player like me who had forgotten just about every aspect of the game, except for the thrill of sending an opponent's ball off. For those who already have a good grap of the basics, it has additional chapters on strategy, winning the mental game, and getting better. One last bonus of this book is it's small size. It is quite easy to whip out and reference when there is a disagreement on the official rules of the game. ... Read more
