4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginers
I read the book front to back and overall was slightly impressed. A great book for new coaches or new keepers looking to understand the position.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best Overview
There's a dearth of valuable technical instruction available for most aspiring goalkeepers, both in person and in print. This book provides an excellent overview of all aspects of goalkeeper play, from the physical fundamentals (catching, footwork, etc.) to positional play and the mental game (an extremely important topic that often gets little coverage). Mastery of the skills detailed in this book will make you a very good, skilled goalkeeper. My only beef is that the nuanced information and skills that separate the "very good" from the "world class" is not covered at all. I know that's a lot to ask, but if you're looking for the knowledge to put your game over the top, this isn't really going to help. On the other hand, if you're looking for a comprehensive guide to the position, or to find a reference touchstone for the "completeness" of your (or your player's) game, this is the place. Ultimately, a necessary resource for any serious goalkeeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars good field practice and exercises guide
This book offers very effective field , footwork, and strategic techniques for Intermediate level keepers. Covers most topics well but short on phychological methods against opponents and advanced topics in teamwork. Overall very complete and technical. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Complicated Drills
I found most of the drills to be quite complicated and difficult to implement on the field. I did find some useful drills and others may become more useful in the future as I coach upper age groups, up to U-12 right now. But the time lost explaining the drills and setting them up is better spent on less complex drills with more ball touches per player. I also prefer small sided games to allow the game to teach the players.

5-0 out of 5 stars It it a lot of fun.
This book gives you a lot of ideas for you and your team to do. It really helped my soccer skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars So many good drills I can't begin to use them all!
For a coach desiring to teach skills to individuals, small groups, or team drills, this book has it all. As a newcomer to the game three years ago, but a former coach of other High School level sports, I found this book jam-packed with useful drills. It can be beneficial to everyone from a U-6 coach to the High School level. The wide variety of drills addressing so many different skills, allows me to keep my practices fun and fresh for my team. I can't comment from the viewpoint of an experienced soccer coach, but from my perspective of coaching youth teams for 3 years, it was easily the best spent money of the year for my team. Any coach wanting to teach his/her team new skills in a fun and organized way should really take a look at this one. It even prompted me to invent two or three new drills of my own that the team (U-10) loves to practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for 15 to 17 years old advanced players.
I have had this book for a year and I have found it to be extremely useful. To get most out of this book, players should have good talent level and they should have got used to long-term practicing. This book is good handbook when creating an own playing system or way to play. It is excellent handbook, when planning own practices - it gives new ideas and it may be used as the base of all coaching work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this soccer or a pattern book for needlepoint?

I don't claim to be an expert soccer coach. However, I do know that there are two schools of thought about how to coach soccer. In one school, coaches emphasize simple drills to teach and then perfect particular ball handling skills (for example, trapping or heading a high ball, or sprinting down the field and then sending a long crossing pass). These skills are then allowed to be put to use in small scrimmages, in order to allow each player to have a maximum number of ball touches to develop confidence in handling the ball under pressure, and also to allow for creativity. In the other school, coaches emphasize rigid pattern drills, which attempt to simulate particular play situations in soccer, and in this way, the players also learn to perfect their ball control skills.

Well, this book definitely belongs to the second school of thought. I don't happen to believe in this school, at least not yet.

I have to say that the title of the book made me think that there was some connection to Dutch Soccer. Visions of Johan Cruyff, Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Wiel Coerver, and all of those wonderful Dutchmen, who coach and play some of the most inventive and creative soccer in the world (oh, okay, maybe not in the whole world, just in Europe) danced through my head.

Instead, the author turns out to be really an Englishman, and the book's only connection to Dutch Soccer seems to be that these drills are borrowed from the Dutch Soccer Academy. The drills are really all about dribbling, passing, and shooting, in well-defined patterns. The pages are just filled with symbols - triangles, dots, and squiggly lines. Some of the drills are relatively straightforward and easy to do. Some of the patterns are quite complex. After trying to figure out several pages worth of these patterns, my eyes just started to glaze over. I don't know how the coaches or players memorize all of these patterns in the first place. And you would have to memorize them, otherwise the really complex drills would fall into total chaos.

I can only guess that if anybody were to use these drills, they would have to be 1) fairly advanced soccer players, probably at high school or college level or above, and 2) heavily into a structured style of soccer.

Maybe it will work for you. I didn't find the book to be very useful. The blurb in the title about "Individual Skills" is also misleading since there is virtually no information, not even one pearl of wisdom, about how to teach individual ball skills to a player. ... Read more

Based on officiating mechanics devised and endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), Officiating Soccer is the definitive guide for new and experienced high school referees. Officiating mechanics for dual, diagonal, and double-dual (three-whistle) systems are supported by 100 photos and illustrations of positioning, field movement, and signals. Real-life cases demonstrate correct rulings, point out common officiating errors and how to avoid them, and challenge you to make the right call in game situations. A glossary of key soccer terms is also included. Officiating Soccer is not a rules book¾it’s a practical resource for implementing correct mechanics as developed and approved by the NFHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best soccer book I 've seen. Nice photos and easy to follow
I went through many books and this one is the best I've found so far... Great pictures and explanations. My soccer skills are much improved from this book, I was the worst player on the team and in one year I became one of the better ones! I usually took 3 exercises and practice them for one week and then move on to the next set... The only downside to this books that it does not cover kicking techniques, bicycle kicks and heading... Great investment in your soccer skill!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for players who want to excell thru training
I got hold of this book 4 years back. It has taught me to dribble very well. I have developed myself from just a 20% player to almost 50% player.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basically the older version of Wiel Coerver's book "Score!"

This is Wiel Coerver's original book on teaching young soccer players how to do soccer dribbling "moves". I ordered this book through not knowing what it was all about, having already gotten Coerver's other book "Score!" This book covers pretty much the same material, and would be of interest only if you don't already own the other book, or if you are a serious Coerver Coaching fan. If you are a Coerver Coaching fan, this book is somewhat interesting in a historical sort of way in that the pictures are all black and white, and many show a middle-aged Wiel Coerver demonstrating the moves (in the book "Score!", he appears only in one photo at the introduction, looking like a wizened old grandfather).

It is interesting to note how organized youth soccer coaching has evolved between the two books to encompass ever younger kids. In this book, Coerver states: "The very young should not be troubled with planned training and assignments" (p.3) and later: "..begin this plan at the age of ten .." (p.5). By the time of the book "Score!" he writes: "Most of the exercises are suitable for young players..." (p.4) and "The group of exercises in the first category have been deliberately kept simple so that even beginners as young as age six can practice them" (p.6). In this book, the young soccer players all look like they are at least ten years old or over. In the book "Score!" the pictures have turned into color and the players are all much younger, with some of them actually looking like they are less than six years old.

With both books, there is still the problem of following the footwork for executing the moves using only static pictures, and so I would still recommend getting the Coerver Coaching videos to help you with the footwork (see my review for the book "Score!" on how to get these). Coerver's books are interesting mainly from the philosophical standpoint, with Coerver grieving over the loss of "goal scorers and players with innovative plays or creative abilities" because of "coaches who...prefer not to allow their players to engage in individual play for fear that they might lose possession of the ball" (p.3). He also writes in this book: "As a result, it is rare to find a training program that encourages individual attacking techniques" (this is something that Paul Gardner also bemoans, in his book, "The Simplest Game").

Do not make the mistake of limiting the potential of your players by teaching them only "kick and run" soccer. These books and videos from Coerver Coaching will show you how to teach your players the great moves of Cruyff, Rivelino, Rumennige, Matthews, etc. ... Read more

Book Description

"It wasn't a team.It was a tent revival."

So says Pat Summitt, the legendary coach whose Tennessee Lady Vols entered the 1997-98 season aiming for an almost unprecedented "three-peat" of NCAA championships.Raise the Roof takes you right inside the locker room of her amazing team, whose inspired mixture of gifted freshmen and seasoned stars produced a standard of play that would change the game of women's basketball forever.

The 1997-98 season started innocently enough. One Saturday in August, four young freshmen--Semeka Randall, Tamika Catchings, Ace Clement and Teresa Geter--arrived on the Tennessee campus to begin their college careers.Welcoming them were a number of players from the previous year, including Chamique Holdsclaw and Kellie Jolly. But that night, in a sign of things to come, a simple pickup game turned into an amazing display of basketball brilliance--freshmen against established players, and with barely a shot missed by either side.Suddenly Pat Summitt glimpsed the future: fast, aggressive and hugely talented. This might be the team she'd worked her whole career to coach.

As the season got under way, other dramas unfolded. After one emotional team meeting, Summitt realized that many on the team were playing for something more than just the glory of the game: all four freshmen, for example, came from single-parent homes, and the tough circumstances of the majority of the other players seemed to add an extra edge to their desire to win it all.Further, Chamique Holdsclaw, widely regarded as the greatest female player ever, was being dogged by questions about turning pro--and she seemed reluctant to rule it out.Meanwhile, another member of the team began to notice the unwelcome attentions of a fan, who soon turned out to be a full-fledged stalker.

All this was behind the scenes; out on the court, the win column was swelling with every game: 8-0, 15-0, 21-0.As 1997 turned into 1998, Pat Summitt began privately to admit that this team had changed her: these kids were so lovable, funny and eager to please that she simply had to let them into her heart.Along the way, the Lady Vols were redefining what women were capable of, trading in old definitions of femininity for new ones--in short, they were keeping score. And by the time they entered the NCAA Final Four tournament in Kansas City, Summitt found herself believing the impossible: despite all the distractions, the 1997-98 Lady Vols could go undefeated, and, in doing so, raise the roof off the sport of women's basketball.

Packed with the excitement of a season on the brink of perfection and filled with the comedy and tragedy of one year in the life of a basketball team, Raise the Roof will have readers cheering from the bench for a team of all-conquering players and their astonishing coach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Peek Inside Greatness
I never really followed women's basketball until I saw a news interview on TV after Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols had lost to UConn. I decided to look up this coach on the internet and discovered that she was a legend in her on right. I was embarrassed because I knew absolutely nothing about her.

The book is easy reading and entertaining. It made me laugh, as somethings were just down right funny. I like the outline of the book as it gives short interviews of various players after most chapters. I enjoyed Pat's concise summary of her players character and her dealing with the various issues and problems they faced. She gives a vivid picture of the going on inside a basketball team. She shows an uncanny ability to mold and shape women into winners and all the while, she was willing to make adjustment in herself. Greatness may start with one person, but it can never remain great until it has a supporting cast. Pat her coaches and her players gave us a peek inside greatness and most of all a real life story that got them there.

5-0 out of 5 stars It was just like being there, courtside.
I loved this book!! I lived in Knoxville for many years and am a big fan of the Lady Vols. Reading this book made me feel like I was right there in the middle of the action. I could feel the intensity of the games, the frustration of the players and coaches and I could feel my heart race as she described the games. I had been to many of the games she talked about but now I was able to see them in a whole new light.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Coach Summitt while I worked at the Univerity of Tennessee. You can see her intensity in her eyes and she was able to shift that intensity to the page. You also get to see a more compasionate side of Coach Summitt as well. This team became more than a group of young women playing basketball, they became family to her.

If you are not a fan of women's basketball, you will be after reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Raise the roof
This book gives you all the inside details of the lady vols 1997-1998 season.A must for any lady vol fan!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Raise the Roof
I am a high school basketball player and I really enjoy this book. I have read this book more than once and it's good everytime. I love all the inside stories on the Tennessee team and I love the feeling of being there as I read. It is so realistic and I can really relate to what goes on in women's basketball and the experience in it. Pat Summitt did a great job on this book and I only wish I could have really been there as a part of the team and face what they faced during that undefeated season.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Harkes: A True American Success Story
What can I say about this book? Well, I can tell you that it is an inspiring story about an American-born soccer player who with soccer in his blood, goes out and accomplishes his dream. He tells about how he grew up playing in the soccer crazed town of Kearny, New Jersey to honing his craft at the University of Virginia to taking his talents to the professional level in England and later back to his home country of the U.S.A. He tells about his triumphs and disappointments at all levels of his career. It's a great read for those who are soccer fans. When reading this book, I felt like I was actually there with Harkes as he tells the excitement of World Cup '94 and the disappointment when he was dropped from the U.S. National Team and did not make it to France in '98. I encourage fans of "the greatest sport in the world" to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Magnificant
I received the book and on that same day was half-way throught it. This is the book to read if you're an American Soccer fan. John takes you behind the scenes of his career in and out of the states. From his hometown of Kearny, NJ to the Premier League and now to the MLS. He talks in great detail of his early proffessional struggles and enormous successes. He tell you what kept him out of France 98 and what he plans for the future. I grew up looking up at John Harkes as a soccer player. This book showed me more than just a great soccer player but a great person. A must read if your a soccer fan or one who is curious about the game!

5-0 out of 5 stars Justice
A fresh look into the purposeful misleading and lies of Steve Sampson and his mishandling of the US Men's National Team at France '98. For me, the background was good, but the reading on the France '98 team is essential to anybody who cares about US Soccer. John Harkes is owed an apology by Steve Sampson and the powers that be at US Soccer for the way he was treated after giving it all up for the glory of the game in the USA. Sampson may dispute the facts put down by Harkes, but the book got published, Harkes never got sued, Harkes is still playing and Sampson is coaching kids soccer (right where he belongs.) Attitude? Dang right. Too many people, like John Harkes, Marcelo Balboa, Alexi Lalas poured their lives in elevating the game to an unheard of level in the states, only to be lied to, whispered about, and then ultimately begged by the boss, himself, Judas Sampson, to "take it easy on him, he's only a human being." Calling himself a human being is a slap in the face to the genus as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars The phatest book ever
"Captain for Life" is the greatest book ever to be publisheds. It gives the most interesting, deep insight of one of the greatest Americans√∑ to ever play the game of soccert. Everywhere John Harkes goes, the most fanatics from the best soccer countries adores and loves the Harskey. "Captain for Life" is definitely the top autiobiography out right now. Once you start reading this book, you will not be able to put it down. Take my advice. This is coming from a person that doesn't read often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forever an Owl
John Harkes - a great player, a great guy and now a great author. John made a great impact upon the british game, and is remembered with great affection among Sheffield Wednesday fans for he reminds us of the great times we had whilst John was with us. The book is a great insight into John's career, from his teenage days in Kearny to his time in England and as a founder player of the relatively recent MLS league. I found it an enthralling read and was loathed to put it down!! I particularly enjoyed reading John's explanation for his leaving the Owls, as we all felt John Had been unfairly treated. If you enjoy soccer, you'll love this book. It highlights the highs and low's of John's career, and provides personal insights into John Harkes the man. John you're gone (from England) but not forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for U8 to U10
This is the best book I've found for coaching the U8-U10 age groups. McCarthy writes well, and explains the basics in simple, easy-to-understand language. For coaching my U9 team, I found his explanations of skills, positions, rules, and strategy especially helpful. This book should be supplemented with a good book of soccer drills. What it covers, it covers well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book and great manager
having worked with sir alex i can say hes the best there is. players love working for him. he tells it how it is and is always fair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fergie's book
A distinctly average book, by a very average man. Nothing special here at all. Go for something worthwhile like David Beckham's book. Or the Tweenies....

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of a deserving soccer legend
There can be no doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson will go down in history as one of soccer's truly great figures from the late 20th Century. His treble winning season with United in 1998/99 was possibily the pinnacle of a long career in the game, both as a player and coach, but in his insightful autobiography he devotes more pages to the early days of his career - as a strapping young Scottish lad trying to overcome the burden of near-poverty and become a professional footballer.

Ferguson writes as he played and coaches - with overwhelming passion and dedication to all aspects of the task at hand. He paints the grim picture of his early days, and introduces the reader to some of the colourful characters he's met over the years both on and off the pitch. It is both entertaining and confrontational - he writes honestly and occasionally attacks the FA and certain individuals in the game, and although he may be blatant at times he cannot be criticised for his truthful and forthright manner.

'Managing My Life' is a remarkable autobiography in that it reveals a great deal of his character and motivation, and unlocks the door to the mind of the world game's truly brilliant managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Book about a truly great coach
Being an avid supporter of Manchester United I have always been very keen to have an insight into the life and times of one of the club's greatest ever manager.

The book clearly portrays the great mans early days and his tough upbringing by the Clyde in Glasgow. Uniquely, in a city which had major religous differences Alex's parents were from a mixed marriage. We get a great insight into Alex's early footballing life and the tough times that his family endured in surviving.
A fascinating discussion about Alex Fergusans time as a player were amongst other clubs represented Glasgow Rangers. Even as a player we could to realise that he had a volatile temperment which would continue to serve him as a natural football leader.

From success at the unfashionable Aberdeen football Club to the pressures of managing one of the biggest sports clubs in the world Alex remains how much his childhood upbringing continues to be a major backbone of his life.

A truly great read into the one of soccers most respected characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for the young high school player
This is fantastic book for the young soccer player. The book is written to the level of a high school player and details the passion and discipline it takes to make it to the next level. The tips and drills to perform with friends and on your own,are with out a doubt, excellent and should be done on a daily basis. I highly recommend this to all youth soccer players and coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative book
When I first began reading the book by Paul Caligiuri, I could not put it down...I found my self reading the first paragraph of each chapter until I got to the end. Then over the next week, I read the book thru again twice. I have re-read it well over 5 times and pick up something new each time. I defy any serious soccerite to read this book only once!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better for motivation than as a "how-to" guide.
This is a great book for young players who want to take their game to highest level in high school and prepare for soccer at the college or even professional level. It teaches some advanced moves, but its real strength is helping young players understand the discipline and love for the game it takes to play at the highest levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the serious soccer player or coach.
High Performance Soccer gave me great insight into the world of upper level soccer. All players that aspire to bigger and better things can learn a great deal from Paul Caligiuri. The information in these pages can apply to all age groups of competitive soccer. I can't wait to get on the field and teach these new found skills. I read it from cover to cover and then went back and hilighted all of the items that I believe to be useful. The inside of the book is now flouresant yellow! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If football is about enjoyment, the FA got it wrong!
If you never believed that 90's football was about enjoyment of the masses and had a sneeking suspecion that it had more to do with business then this is the book for you! It neatly dismisses all those long forgotten myths that football is for the fans and replaces it with the notion that football is about the business ethos. It takes a look at power, control and the men in grey suites who are determined to take the game away from the true fans and place it in the hands of the only people who can afford the ticket prices! It also serves the excellent perpous of confirming the fans view of their identity and where it comes from. This will make all football fans realise that you don't have to be a Nick Hornby to care . . . but it helps! If you are one of the few who still care and want to know a bit more about how they are dirtying the beautiful game, get a copy now! ... Read more
