3-0 out of 5 stars Conditioning for Soccer
I don't normally write book reviews, but I was very disappointed with this book and felt obligated to balance the other overly enthusiastic 5 star reviews. Some of the material, such as the chapter on "Strength Training Exercises", is really not soccer specific. Also, the chapter on "Speed Training" is largely comprised of games such as "Numbers Passing Game" and "Three Versus One in Grid", which Luxbacher had the audacity to simply excerpt from his other book "Soccer Practice Games"(a far better book with great games I have used successfully with my travel soccer team). The 4 page chapter on Plyometric training was interesting, but overall don't waste your money on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book if u love soccer and want to move faster
This book lowered my 2mile run from 16 minutes to 13.5 in hardly 1.5 months. the off season training guide is comprehensive and differs each day so as to not get bored. plyometrics add true fun. Much of the book focuses on other aspects of soccer such as quick turns and acceleration. Even a section on pregame eating for peak performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wondeful Guide to Soccer Fitness
This book contains all that is needed to know for proper soccer conditioning. The conditioning process is broken down into succint, easy to follow and perform drills. Any level of conditioning will benefit from study and use of this book. Mr. Luxbacher has made a real contribution to soccer coaching here!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Handbook
I have read this book about 4 times in the 3 months I've had it. It is brilliant to find a book that deals with the conditioning side of the game only. I have been looking for something like this for years. I am nearing the twilight years of my own playing days and have found that by adjusting the programs and levels to suit where I'm at, I have improved my game in the season I've just started. The drills, exercises and explanation of all forms of training are easy to understand and thorough. My only criticism would be of the chapter on weight training where I wonder whether if you followed what is set down you might be in danger of overtraining muscles and not allowing enough recovery time. The 16 week program was a great finish to the book putting into practise all you'd read before it. I will be looking for more books from Joe Luxbacher and thank him for producing something I will be using for my own sons if and when they decide to play Soccer. ... Read more

Book Description

Build a successful team around the strengths of your players! In Soccer Systems and Strategies, two coaches of the Danish national team provide a guide to implementing the world’s top systems, strategies, and styles of play into your game plan.

Learn the basics of the four major soccer systems and the different styles of play within each of these systems to help you select the best style for your team. Choose from attacking styles, various defensive styles, and styles that are characteristic of different international soccer powers, including the Latin, British, Norwegian, South American, and African systems. Drills and practice tips are included to help your players grasp and master the system you select.

Teams throughout the world have shown that adapting a system to match players' strengths—instead of placing every group of players within an existing system—is a key to winning. With Soccer Systems and Strategies, you have all the information you need to fit the ideal system to your team and give your team the best chance to win. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An Outline for a Book
Four systems of play are covered (4-3-3, 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 3-4-3) in a grand total of 28 pages. That's an average of 7 pages per system covered. In my opinion, that should be the length of the introduction to these systems. If you are looking for a book to guide you in your decision as to what system to use with your team...THIS IS NOT THE BOOK! No descriptions are given as to what kinds of players could fill the roles in each of the systems. No details are given on how different situations are dealt with given different player alignments. One sample training session is given for each system which would probably take up 20-30 minutes of practice time. There is no discussion on variants of each system. This book does not live up to its title!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview, neither too simple nor too technical
This book, by Danish authors, seeks to explain the major systems of play, as well as attacking strategies for different aspects of the game (set pieces such as corner kicks, throw ins, free kicks, etc.) The book covers the major systems (4-4-2, 3-5-2, 4-3-3...) and gives both a sample training session and an example of how a well-known team has played each system. This section on systems of play is probably the most valuable portion of the book, and makes it worth buying.

The rest of the book focuses on various other aspects of the game, mostly set pieces. Several different options are given, and easy to read diagrams are provided for each of them. The authors also talk briefly about the style of play of different regions of the world (South America, Europe, Africa), and make some observations about each, but this section is really very limited, as the discussion mentions only those general characteristics of each (For example, the South American style is generally characterized by players who are highly skilled with the ball, and teams who try to score as a result of possessing the ball.) and does not really compare and contrast their merits or deficits to any real extent.

Also briefly mentioned are topics such as player psychology, coaching philosophy and methods, and other game situations like penalty kicks. These topics are also relatively limited in scope, although the information they provide is worthwhile.

Overall this is a very good book on tactics, one that is certainly worth reading for the systems of play portion, but the other sections, while they are adequate, fail to live up to that measure of quality. An additional critique of the book is that the Danish style of long ball direct play does tend to predominate some of the discussion in each area. Notwithstanding these elements, however, I do recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about tactics and systems of play.

4-0 out of 5 stars Planning For A Successful Soccer Team Performance
An informative book for all individuals interested in learning the basics of Soccer team play and performance. The author provides information concerning the fundimentals, and development of systems of play, & styles of play. Attacking & defensive styles of play are outlined as well as providing information on how various countries have adapted a soccer style of play. Team tactics and technical training are other subjects covered in general terms. There is an interesting and informative chapter relating to Coaching, the role of the coach, methods of training, and building a team. A chapter diagramming plays when there are dead ball situations is most interesting with regard to player alignment, and the vairous steps required to execute a successful play. This book is a good start for all those who would like to get to learn the basics of Soccer team play and further pursue a more detailed knowledge of the game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fine Art of Refereeing
This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive book about officiating now in print; with apologies to Izaak Walton, it's "The Compleat Referee."

If you're just beginning as a referee, study and learn the Laws of the Game. Develop a relationship with a mentor whom you trust. And read this book.More than once. Despite the authors' significant credentials as FIFA and FA referees, the newest official will find their style enlightening and eminently readable. The book covers the entire gamut of refereeing from pre-match preparation to effectively dealing with every imaginable - and unimaginable! - situation on the pitch. Personal anecdotes from the authors' considerable experience appear throughout each chapter and help clearly illustrate each point.

For more experienced referees, this book delves repeatedly into the very personal subject of player management - the mind game. The authors will repeatedly challenge you to evaluate each match on its own and ensure you're employing the right skills to effectively 'orchestrate' it.

I had the pleasure of attending a day-long presentation by Mr. Evans and Mr. Bellion and can tell you that these gents are every bit as entertaining and informative in their book as they are in person. Their good humor and passion for the game comes through loud and clear. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a soccer or "football" referee, this book is IT
If you are a ref...this book teaches you how to really BE one and be a PART of the game..not the obstruction to it.YOU NEED this book it is the best referee book ever written.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book I should have read...
As a Grade 7 referee upgrading to a Grade 6 - State Referee I have read everything I can about Soccer Refereeing. I wish I would have found this book first instead of last. The authors bring wonderful insight to the "sport" of Soccer Refereeing. They have given me so many new and wonderful ideas that I can't wait to try them this season.

Whether you are a new referee or an experienced referee I would highly suggest this book. It covers topics that were never ever discussed in my training sessions. So much so that I actually have a new outlook on how I referee this wonderful game of soccer.

The other books are good and are worth your time but read this book first, then go to the others.

Michael Metz - USSF Grade 7 Referee - AYSO Area Referee

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book is the best book I have read so far about being a referee. This is not a book to read if you are trying to learn the rules of soccer themselves. This book is full of techniques and practical advice for use in actually officiating a soccer match. This is my first year as a referee, after several years as a coach of youth teams and playing in adult leagues. This book was of enormous help to me and made my "rookie" year so much easier.I concure with the other reviewers. Many of them, from the titles they list on the reviews, are experienced referees.Their coments about this book influenced me to get the book and I am very glad I did.If you are looking to be a better soccer referee, this is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book available on soccer refereeing...
I fully agree with the other reviewers. Simply stated this is the best book available for anyone truly interested in learning about refereeing soccer. Very readable, with many wonderful anecdotes about the game. Great use of examples... covers every aspect of refereeing soccer. Much, much more than just a synopsis of The Laws. It digs deeper to provide a true understanding of what is behind the Laws, and how one can improve performance. This book has helped me immensely in my developement as a State level soccer referee. It is absolutely required reading for any soccer referee who is truly commited to this avocation / vocation. Buy this book -- I guarantee 100% that you will not be disappointed. Read it once, and then again -each time you will learn a bit more, something a little different that you missed the first time around. This book is presently the "bible" for all soccer referees. Bob Evans and Ed Bellion are to be commended for taking the time to write this jewel for all soccer referees. Ignore this one at your own expense... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a beginning or intermediate coach
This book is a great stepping stone for a beginning coach to advance to next level. It explains soccer tactics in a succinct logical fashion and demonstrates how the coach can teach these tactics to his/her players through drills that graduate in difficulty. There are also excellent sections on soccer technique which are taught in the same fashion as tactics. This book will enhance the coach and his players' enyoyment of the sport by focusing in on what's important. Other books that I highly recommend include Coaching Soccer Successfully (this book is more advanced) and Soccer Skills and Strategies (more basic). These three books tend to complement each other very well and should make worthy additions to any soccer coach's library. ... Read more

Book Description

The essential guide to the game and the rules that govern it - with all of the newest rule changes instituted for World Cup 1998. Much more than a rules reference book, Soccer Rules Explained is an entertaining and enlightening in-depth appreciation of the world's most popular sport. Internationally recognized soccer authority Stanley Lover expertly covers each of the rules with analysis, historical notes, anecdotes, tips on play, and commentary, while stripping away the dry-as-dust legal language to reveal the energy and beauty of the game. Approximately one hundred photos and illustrations help illuminate all the rules. More important, this guide outlines all the FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) rule changes instituted for the 1998 World Cup, the most significant changes in nearly sixty years. The result is an engaging, essential primer that can be enjoyed by newcomers and seasoned players alike, and is a must for anyone who wants to better understand the game of soccer. 3-0 out of 5 stars From a coach, player and referee
I have been playing and coaching soccer for 6 years now and recently completed my referee licensing clinic. I was looking for materials that would help me learn more about the laws of the game that I knew were there but had not yet been explained to me. I found that this book did not bring to light anything I did not already know. I felt it was a book that would be very felpfull to a newcomer to the sport of soccer. This will be a great book to pass around to the parents of the next youth team I coach to help the parents learn the basics of the laws of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOCCER RULES EXPLAINED
From the Author:

I'd like to reply to the review by Michael Thomas. He is right in saying that the book is of value to readers already experienced in the game - particularly referees and coaches. It is not intended as a primer for newcomers. To help those who need an easier entry to the rules I recommend one or more of my other books;

SOCCER AND ITS RULES - 28 page pocket guide, published by Soccer Learning Systems, San Ramon,CA

SOCCER RULES ILLUSTRATED - 144 pages, 130 easy-to-follow graphics, Triumph Books, Chicago,Ill.

FAIR PLAY GUIDE - 16 page pocket guide for parents, players, coaches and other members of the soccer family - Soccer Learning Systems,CA.

Through these four publications I've tried to help all soccer people, whatever their interest and role may be, to appreciate the traditional and practical values within the rules which have made soccer such a great world sport.

Thanks for your review Michael.

3-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat tecnical look at the laws of the game
The book covers all the rules of the game in great detail but is more designed for a person / referee with quite a bit of soccer experience not a parent or beginner. There is some background on the origin of the game as well as some anecdotal information on the game which is nice to know but totally unnecessary if you just want to get up to speed on the rules. There are far too many pictures and other illustration which are of no value. This would be a book used as reference on a term paper, not as an easy aid to learning the rules of soccer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
This book mostly talked about his life off of the pitch and all the stress he went thourgh in the the World Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true soccer genius
I bought this book about a year ago. It is an inside look into Ronaldo's life, more about his personal life than his career on the pitch. Ronaldo is truly the best player on earth, despite FIFA's thoughts of Zizou. Ronaldo is up there with the Gods of the sporting world: Michael Jordan, Mohammed Ali, Pele, Johann Cruyff, Eusebio, Diego Armando Maradona, etc. If you think you know Ronaldo, read this book...

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is not onely about star its about brazil
i got this book for my birth day a i read it. i thought that itall talk a bout soccer, but it didn't. i taked abot how he grow up inbrazil and how the enverment was so diffecult in there. how he escaped from all bad things like gaging and drug and alcholes. his father was not so lucky. he smoked and he had alot of alckholes and drug. he was very unkind to his wife and his son. there fore, his wife decided to built up her self and her son.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book explains Ronaldo`s life on and off the pitch
This book is GREAT! It explains Ronaldo`s footballing life and his personal, and public life, and many secrets only a few on the earth know.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly gripping story of the Football God of the 90's!
Ever since the final whistle of the World Cup final I have had a big unanswered question. Why did the world's best player in the world's best team play so badly in the one game, the most important game, of his life so far, giving one of the world's worst performances in front of the world's biggest ever event audience of 2 billion. Months before the world cup the papers were full of Ronaldo. How Ronaldo would score more goals than ever seen before. How this would be his world cup like Pele's 1970, Kempes' 1978, Rossi's 1982, Maradona's 1986, and Romario's 1994. TV Programmes showed endless clips of his sublime skills, his genius. Months after the tragedy that was France '98. No credible explanation has appeared until now!! Clarkson's book to answer the question of what happened on that fateful day in Paris. He gives a complete picture of what makes up the man - Ronaldo. Clarkson delves into Ronaldo's childhood, giving an account of the early flashes of brilliance, his love of the game, his disappointments, the influence of his family and even his lack of confidence with girls. Then he takes us through Ronaldo's early career in a lowly 2nd division Brazillian League team. Then the breakthrough and subsequent move to Europe followed by stardom and megabucks. Then we are told of the trials and tribulations of his life in Europe. The immense build up to the World cup and the account of what actually happened to Ronaldo's Brazil. I must confess I did not let the book go until i had read in from cover to cover. Clarkson has a lovely smooth flowingly style of writing which captures the essence of the story. After reading the book I felt i had understood one of the most intriguing mysteries of footballing history. ... Read more

Book Description

FIFA, the International Football Federation, celebrates 100 years of soccer with a beautiful gift book that every fan will cherish--the first official publication on the sport's history, and the most comprehensive and wide-ranging. It's filled with rare and breathtaking images, interviews with soccer's top personalities, and other material from FIFA's extensive archives.

FIFA has spared no expense in creating this lavish volume, which celebrates a century of soccer--and the care shows on every page. It's the fullest, most fabulous history ever of this global sport, beginning with the ancient ball games that were soccer's direct ancestors, moving on to the establishment of official rules (in a London pub in 1863), and continuing right to the present day. All the richness and diversity of this extraordinary sport come through in an examination of different styles of play, various stadiums throughout the world, the international media coverage, and the growing importance of women's teams. Money, politics, personalities, fan mania, the youthful players who are soccer's future--they're all here. Above all, there are the amazing pictures, which not only capture the excitement of the game (with players caught flying in midair, and even upside down) but also feature posters, images from magazines and newspapers, and paintings by soccer-loving artists. Like the sport itself, it's simply magnificent.

Avenging their last place finish in 1998, the Americans stunned the world by advancing to the Final Eight, shocking one of the favorites, Portugal, and eliminating their archrivals, Mexico, along the way.

Part-time journalist and full-time fan, Andy Gustafson, was there for it all! In 23 Days in Korea, he brings the reader along for the very wild ride. Cheer with Sam's Army from the cheap seats as the US shocks opponent after opponent. Revel at the outrageous victory parties. Hear the songs and taste the kim'chi. Meet fans from around the world and travel to exotic cities, stadiums and restaurants. The descriptions are so vivid, the readers will be able to experience all the action, both on and off the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book for the American Soccer Fan
I met Andy over in Korea and he perfectly captured what it means to be an American Soccer fan. For many of us who attended the world cup, it has been difficult to share that experience with others because few words can adequately describe the passion that was shared amongst the Yanks in Korea. This is a great read for anyone who has fallen in love with the beautiful game and is a must read for anyone who was in Korea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
If you're thinking of traveling to Europe to catch any games, you must get this book. Not only will it help get about town to the match but inspire you to go catch a match, even if it's a lower division club like FC Paris. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer to European Football
Covers every major club in every European city. Trophies, players, great moments all covered in very readable style. Excellent tips on transportation, lodging and dining. Perhaps the most interesting section is the "Ultra Culture", detailing the hooligan aspects of the respective teams and cities. In other words, where not to go. Fantastic reading. Can't wait for the next edition

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic introduction to the world of European football
I was interested in trying to bone up on my soccer so I could converse intelligently with my relatives in Italy, and this book fit the bill perfectly. Written most directly for use by English-speaking fans who might actually travel to see the powerhouse teams covered, the book is still a fantastic primer on the history of the clubs, and the current gossip as of time of publication (1998.) If you're new to soccer and looking for a little insight into the world of Europe's beautiful game, or just want to read a comprehensive overview of the field that's not afraid to voice a strong opinion or two, this book will not disappoint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, one-of-a-kind book, could stand more detail
The irreplacable book for the travelling football fan. I would like to see some more detail (getting tickets can still be a bit confusing even with the directions in the book), and stadia maps would be helpful for deciding where to sit. Perhaps these problems have been corrected in the 2nd edition.

But still an excellent book, and besides, where else are you going to go for this information? There's nothing else like it. Well worth the money even if you only use it once or twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a great read, whether planning to travel or not.
This book gives great insight into the history of the sport in Europe and also into each countries fans. One of its best charicteristics is that it both serves as a good travel reference and as an interesting read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for serious soccer coaches
Bill Beswick, one of the world's premier sports psychologists (currently employed by England and Manchester United) and an accomplished coach in his own right, has written a book that is destined to take a place on the priority reading list of all aspiring soccer coaches. In it, he describes the mental, emotional, psychological, and lifestyle aspects of a complete player. The book is full of tables, checklists, and charts for self and team assessment, and the book has been beautifully tailored so as to be applicable for both coaches and players. The main strength of this book, though, is its practical recommendations for every topic it addresses (visualization, self-control, team cohesion, confidence, and mental toughness to name a handful). For example, Beswick gives the example of a striker who is not scoring goals in the chapter on confidence. How does the coach, in cooperation with the player, address the situation to help him regain confidence? Beswick asserts that other components of his job description should be brought to his attention (by asking the player), and that he should be encouraged to self-evaluate his performance based on how well he completed all of the aspects of his job description, not just scoring goals. This may sound like a "feel good" tactic at first glance, but Beswick also provides case studies of specific players at the highest levels who were positively affected by this approach (In this case, Dean Sturridge of Derby County). The book encourages a holistic approach to both coaching and playing, and discusses the benefits and potential pitfalls along the way to creating that holistic balance within a team and its players. Indeed, this is the kind of coaching and type of player that must prevail in the future if soccer is to continue to grow and develop, and Bill Beswick has done the sport of soccer and those who love it a distinct service by writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Bill Beswick is the world's leading sports psychologist for soccer. He works with leading European clubs. In this book, he not only tells you what you need to know, he shows you how to put it to work! He shares real-world examples from his work with the European clubs to show you how it works. I was at the NSCAA Convention this year and last year and his sessions were standing-room-only. ... Read more
