Award-winning author Chicki Mallan is at her finest with Moon Handbooks: Cancun. She provides the insider's edge to this top travel destination, including details on side trips, archaeological wonders, snorkeling and scuba diving, accommodations and food for all budgets, and where to shop for jewelry and Maya crafts. 1-0 out of 5 stars Title is misleading, not a good guide
The title of this book is misleading. The title suggests that the book is mostly about Cancun if not exclusively. However, this book is not really about Cancun, but Yucatan peninsula.
The author seems to have enjoyed everything about Mexico and does not offer any real criticism (even a comparative one)about anything. Therefore, it is hard to make a trade off between restaurants, archeological sites or theme parks. If you are going to stay in Cancun for a month that does not matter. However, we spent just one week and the book did not help us at all to choose between attractions.
It also does not give any information on differences between tour organizers, so when the same tour is offered with $20 difference, you don't know if it is because one is better than other, or just one of them happens to have some deal with the hotel you stay in.
I found that in Cancun most of the restuarants offer terrible food at very expensive prices. The book suggests that almost all restaurants are good at Cancun and also does not classify them neither based on price, nor location, but on cousine and stops short of giving price information.
It provides very little detail on Xcaret -one paragraph- which is one of the main attractions close to Cancun.
The maps in then book were lacking detail.
I was very disappointed with this book. The only positive thing about this book is, it tells the history of the area in enough details.
I do not recommend this book to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad!
this is a real cool book and shows lot's of wonderful pictures you just can't resist! plus, it so real I can't believe it but the pictures do look like the real thing!

1-0 out of 5 stars Of 206 pgs only 36 on Cancun - buy something else!
I love the Moon Travel series, their guide to Maui is the best of all the Maui guidebooks. So I was somewhat (very) disappointed to find that this guide wasn't even in the same league. Of 206 pages, 36 are devoted to Cancun - they should have found a better name than "Cancun Handbook". The rest of the book covers Mexican history and all the other spots along the Caribbean Coast. A much better choice is the excellent "Cancun and Cozumel Alive" (which at least warns you that it is as much about Cozumel as Cancun)which I ordered at the same time.

Local information is very cursory, almost like they were trying to conserve words. Shopping in Cancun is covered in less than one page, as opposed to the 12 pages devoted to this art in the other book I mentioned. Not even a word about converting Mexican clothing sizes to U.S. sizes.

I could go on and on about this book, but it's really not worth the effort to write it, or your effort to read it. Choose something better!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of vital and practical info!
"Cancun Handbook" offers a wide variety of practical and vital information on Cancun and its neighboring Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.

Chicki Mallan covers, to name just a handful of her multitude of listings, Government & Economy; Transportation; Planning a Wheelchair Cruise; Health & Safety; Mayan Glossary; Spanish Phrasebook; and, of course, Archaeological Zones.

Shops and accommodations are also covered, of course. But often, Mallan doesn't write about them with the depth that they warrant--especially the hotels along Cancun's renown "Zona Hotelera."

But her sections on Chichen Itza; snokeling; and flora & fauna are marvelous blends of comprehension and precision. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Trusty Travel Companion
Another hard-working Moon Handbook that gets the job done. Chris Humphrey has done an in-depth analysis of Honduran travel considerations and come up with a balanced and useful guide. He handles the basics well - his reviews and recommendations seem to be accurate and on the mark.

I particularly like his more off-the-beaten track sidetrips - my recent trip there was greatly enhanced by some of the lesser-known tourist attractions. He also gives realistic, no-nonsense advice about health and safety issues. Honduras is, after all, a third-world country with a population that often suffers from health, poverty, and crime problems. Humphreys addresses these problems with straightforward common-sense but without being an alarmist about it. He also exhibits a very welcome aura of compassion for the less-fortunate, complete with suggestions on how to entertain the local youngsters.

A fine effort.

3-0 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks Honduras
I should have looked more closely at the publishing date rather then the glowing reviews by other readers because most of the information is from 1999 (published in 2000) and is fairly out of date. Though I love the format and the amounts of information in the book I found myself using The Open Road Honduras Guide (2002) for my hotel, bus and pricing information. If you're going to Honduras this year I'd recommend the Open Road Guide - especially for E-mail and Web Site info as that tends to change very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Model Guidebook! Will be hard to beat this one
This is what a guidebook should be like. I have traveled extensively around the world using many different guidebooks, but none have surpassed this one. Chris Humphrey has done a great job. He really understands the country and its people, and is a very good writer. This guidebook thoroughly covers the Honduran culture, customs, society, economy and history. It contains lots of interesting nuggets of information that will help you get more out of your trip. It also makes getting around and finding a place to stay and things to do very easy since the information is very accurate and up-to-date. Overall, this Honduras guide is hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
(From Planeta Journal) - This second edition by Humphrey revises the nuts-and-bolts information about traveling in Honduras and provides an entertaining read for anyone heading to this Central American country. This guidebook has great details about Celaque National Park, the petroglyphs of El Sauce and even an analysis of the country's maquiladoras. Honduras seems to have it all -- Caribbean beaches, coral reefs, ancient Maya ruins, colonial villages, and virgin forests -- but it takes a good guidebook to get you there. Independent travelers will relish this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great even for a Guatemalan Expat!
Although I have not lived continuously in Guate since '87, I travel back home once a year so for the holiday season (my parents still live back there). You would think that I know all the ins and out of my country, but things keep changing...even some of my old pals and relatives can't keep up. In addition, I now have the monumental task of showing off my country to my American husband. I found this guide to be extremely comprehensive, well structured, well informed, up to date and beautifully presented. There are a lot of guides that don't do justice on the beauty and spectacular color of Guatemala and this one pulls it off! 5-0 out of 5 stars What a guidebook should be!
I took this guidebook and my friend took the one from Lonely Planet and we found we used this one time and time again to find the best places to stay, where to eat, and especially what to do. It helped us choose the best adventure travel, especially whitewater rafting on the Pacuare, and a little bohemian seaside village on the Pacific. I used the Adventure Guide to The Yucatan when we went to Mexico and this series really delivers. It's what a guidebook should be!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fabulous book!
I am here in Costa Rica in an internet cafe and had to take the time to tell everyone what a good book this is. It really gave us everything we needed to plan our trip and now that we are here, we use it to find just about everything. If you have not visited Costa Rica yet, get a copy of this book and come on down -- it is fabulous. PURA VIDA!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a new edition!
I was disappointed to find that this book is not really a new edition of the guidebook. We used the previous edition (by Harry S. Pariser, now author of Explore Costa Rica), and we thought it much better in terms of travel information and background content. This book is clunky and hard to carry around, the maps aren't too great (compared to other guidebooks), and the color photos are decidedly mediocre! We also think that this should be labeled "first edition" for accuracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidebook for Adventure
My husband and I just spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica and believe it or not, found this Adventure Guide to be the best resource for exciting things to do and see. It was also accurate for finding hotels that had that little bit of extra ambiance we wanted for romance. We had used Lonely Planet guidebooks on other trips but found this guidebook to be much better. It's easy to use, has lovely photographs, and for rainy nights it made good armchair reading. I heartily recommend the Adventure Guide for a wonderful vacation in Costa Rica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guide for Eco Adventures
This book was everything we needed in a guidebook, with more then we knew we needed! Honest reviews of hotels and insider tips for restaurants, we used this guide mostly to steer us to some of the most interesting eco adventures in the country. We saved much time and plenty of money with this guide. Wonderful photos too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
This book provides a great overview of retired life in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, covering a wide range of topics of interest to a retiree or traveler. It gives the reader good side-by-side comparison of everything from rental costs to pets, while being easy to read and entertaining.

As has been pointed out in other reviews, there are other books which provide more in-depth detailed information for any of these countries. I found this book valuable in helping me decide where to focus my attention. In fact, I have since bought books dealing specifically with three of the four countries dealt with here, based on what I learned in this one.

I found it to be a good starter for those with a desire to learn more about moving south of the border, but without much detailed knowledge about living in that environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Hi, I am working at ILISA Spanish Language Institute and I just want to let you know that this book is perfect for the retired that want to lay back in Central america and learn Spanish.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good General Knowledge But Needs More Information
I just read this guidebook for the second time. It provides a good overview of living in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Ecuador. However, I think anyone seriously considering living in Costa Rica or Mexico would profit more by reading one of the other travel guidebooks about residing in these countries. The other guides deal specifically with these countries and provide much more complete information.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading.
A good book in that it allows you to compare Mexico with other countries. The only negative I can think of is that in the Mexico section the author refers to Mexico City throughout. Not many retirees want to settle in Mexico City. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Guide
Happy Sails is a gold mine of information and ideas about how to get the most out of your next cruise vacation. Even experienced cruisers will find Pam Kane's unique perspective refreshing and helpful. Have you ever thought about a systematic way to pack for a cruise, accounting for the limited space of ship cabins and the times you won't have access to all your luggage? Pam Kane has, and she describes her system in the book. Do you want to take a disabled loved-one on a cruise, but don't know whether its possible or how to address special needs? Pam Kane tells you what to expect and how to handle the issues that arise.

For first-timers - and cruise-curious people who aren't sure if cruising is for them - this book is indispensable. Pam Kane addresses all the issues people worry about: choosing cabins, traveling with children, onboard activities, shore excursions, shopping, handling the copious food and drink offerings without over indulging, money and tipping and medical / health issues. She does it all with a sharp wit that makes this a fun read as well as a valuable reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aptly Named. . .
I've always felt that too many people spend too much time worrying about their upcoming cruise--first timers and veterans alike. Sometimes, between worrying about tipping, dress codes, packing, sightseeing, air connections, changing money and all the rest, many folks forget that cruising is supposed to be about fun. . .

Or as Pam Kane says, "Happy Sails."

Keeping the focus on enjoying yourself rather than on "rules" is what makes this book a standout. It's a fast, dishy and informative read that should have even the most uncertain first-time cruiser boldy facing the good times ahead. And those with many cruises in their logbooks will find a steamer trunk full of new tips worth trying.

All travel books should be so straightforward and reassuring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cruise into a delightful read
Packed with great information, Happy Sails is also a hilarious read--I frequently found myself laughing out loud at some of Pam Kane's quips. This is not your super-serious-counting-coup-by-traveling-every-single-ocean-liner guide book; it's written by a woman who's been there, done that and would like to save you some of the learning curve.

She's right, no one on a cruise ship really cares what you're wearing, but any woman will obsess about it anyway--and overpack for it, too. She tells you how to pack, WHAT to pack and when to wear it (what the heck DO you wear for "informal night" anyway?).

If you're going on a cheapie cruise, a windjammer or private ship, nope, this book isn't for you. But if you're going on any of the cruise lines you see advertised on TV, get this book before you buy your tickets!

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't float my boat
Perhaps if the author hadn't strayed from answering questions and imparting information about cruise travel, this would be a more useful book. Unfortunately, about a third of the 150 or so pages are set aside in little boxes for chatty personal observations and experiences. Some are mildly informative, but most are devoted to bashing fellow passengers or elevating the author's status to Most Important VIP on the ship. The reader can imagine her casting withering glances at lesser passengers. Perhaps that is the author's method of proving her been-there-done-that and I'm-bored-to-death credentials.

One personal experience in particular was highly distasteful. Describing a cruise with a female friend as roommate, the author made it a point to note that there were only two other pairs of women sharing accommodations. Then she relates: "Toward the end of the cruise, a gentleman who was never without his official Navy cap came lurching over to me in the lounge (he had obviously having a high-level conversation with Captain Jack Daniels) and inquired, 'You and blondie? Are you some sort of them lee-bee-sians?' I still wish I had answered, 'No, we are gracefully aging hookers working the upscale cruise market.'"

Nice--she manages to insult a Navy veteran, lesbians, alcoholics, and the world's oldest profession all in one paragraph. Equally disturbing is the detailed description of a couple engaged in sex with their curtains open. Of course, our author saved the day by letting them know they were being observed by passengers on the deck outside their window. Did we really want to know that? That is, if it really happened. After all, it's a 'joke' told by many cruise directors during a typical cruise ship welcome aboard show.

In my opinion, the author's style exhibits an unpleasant holier-than-thou attitude and is simply unfunny. Really makes the reader want to go on a cruise if they are going to encounter that ilk, doesn't it? I was left with the impression that the author doesn't really like cruises and the people who take them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Happy Sails A Bit Too Cheeky
While Pam Kane's Happy Sails contains a good amount of advice, at times the book contains many irrelevant anecdotes. These little sidebars sometimes insult one's intelligence. For example, on page 136, she relates a story where a lady fell and broke one leg and two arms. According to Ms. Kane, the poor woman's husband wanted to know if they both could fly home "now". She ends this tale of woe with "Then he wanted to know why the cruise line couldn't fly her home so he could continue his cruise? And how much would it cost? Nice guy. Nice try." Honestly, what a bunch of tripe. Why does the reader need to know these wacky stories?

Probably the most cheeky moment of the book is her advice to gay couples. I give her credit for being supportive but it is somewhat condescending. For example, on page 72, she writes " (Question) Is there anything we should or should not do?... (Answer)Other than have a great cruise? About the only thing that might cause some negativity is going overboard in the Public Display of Affection (PDA) area. Don't put your relationship into other people's faces...." Frankly, gays and lesbians do not need the author giving them advice on how to behave on a cruiseship. We manage to figure that out everyday in life.

She later relates another anecdote where she and her sister where "adopted" by a "significant gay population" aboard the ship. While playing games and whatnot, they chose team names such as "Fruits Afloat" and "Queens of the Ocean" as retribution for some overheard remarks from some other passengers. While I do not question the veracity of this story, Ms. Kane acts as though she marched with Harvey Milk. I do, however, give her points for trying.

Incidentally, Ms. Kane fails to mention that there are charters by Atlantis, RSVP and Olivia, which cater to the gay and lesbian market if a couple were to feel uncomfortable with the other passengers.

Other than these annoying features, the books does manage to dispense some practical advice. Just remember, apparently she wrote it thinking her readers were a pack of Love Boat misfits. ... Read more

Costa Rica is a small country with enormous bio-diversity. From its pristine beaches, which border both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, to its still-active volcanoes and thriving tropical rain forests, Costa Rica is a nature lover's dream destination; and Costa Rica: A Natural Destination is an ideal guidebook. The fully revised fourth edition provides plenty of information about national parks, biological reserves, wildlife refuges, and privately-owned nature reserves. There's also a section that covers the country's history and culture and offers practical tips on preparing for a trip to Costa Rica. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Hi, My name is Leonie and I am working at ILISA Language Institute in Costa Rica, San Jose and I just want to say that this book helps our students a lot by giving them helpful tips and their way around in CostaRica. Thanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good information to supplement "The New Key"
There is a lot of good information here, if you are willing to search itout--since information about one destination might be found in severalsections ("What to See," "National Parks,""Private Nature Reserves," etc.)Ree Strange Sheck has a lot ofknowledge to share, and I feel she only writes about what she haspersonally researched and experienced.I found many interesting lodgingdescriptions in various price ranges, where travelers can experiencenatural areas on their own.The author also mentions local guides, naturepreserves, drivers and Costa Rican tour companies which provide servicessimilar to the large foreign tour companies as well as the opportunity tomeet Costa Ricans, generally at lower cost and with more benefit to localpeople. My first choice in Costa Rica guidebooks would be The New Key toCosta Rica, but this book is a nice supplement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well intended, but confusing
The author clearly loves this country and the book shows it. However, she does not do a good job of organizing this information in an easy-to-read way. The text is continuous and does not have any headings. I also got the feeling that she did a lot o promotion of her local friends who own restaurants, hotels and nature preserves. Overall, the book does not give a professional impression. I do not recommend it. ... Read more

A classic work on the natural history of Nicaragua by the British geologist who superintended the Chontales Gold Mining Company from 1868 to 1872. Belt was especially influenced by Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection and his book contains a great deal of evidence to support it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful site guide; not a birding field manual.
This is not a birding field guide, but a helpful guide to quite a few Costa Rica birding sites. Very good descriptions of sites included (including some information not available elsewhere) but many other places were not covered. The author's assessments are useful. Supplements other guides.

1-0 out of 5 stars For serious birdwatchers. No color photos
Lots of tables and descriptions of where to go to see birds. 99% Costa Rica. A few black and white drawing of birds, plants, maps. Not good if you want color photos of birds you might see. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide available on Belize diving
The Aquaquest guides are the best-written dive guides I've seen, and the Belize guide by Ned Middleton is no exception. It's well written, well-organized, and beautifully illustrated with photographs. It also includes a chapter on places to stay and eat that I found to be more useful than some stand alone travel guides. Middleton clearly knows his dive sites, and his descriptions and recommendations proved to be reliable. ... Read more
